Big difference between this and the 35xx H and 35xx SP is that they actually didn't put the processor on top of the battery. ON both the RG35xx variants this can cause the battery to explode or wear much faster. They solved this issue on the 40xx H
This handheld is absolutely fine for emulating Dreamcast, N64, PSP it won't play the entire library but if you know what your doing you will probably be able to play 85% of the library with no issues .
I just got this and have a few thoughts. First, for me, it was 54 dollars free shipped. 59 after tax. Like thats crazy value. from aliexpress, but it still took literally only a week to reach me. So, start there. That's just crazy cheap. I already had a RP2+ from a couple years ago. Not the 2s. That was 115 at the time, so prices have come down a lot. My main issue with it is the display seems kinda poor. It's acceptable but just doesnt pop, say even as much as this RG 40 XX H I figured the RG 40 XX H was right up my alley for a few reasons: I'm mainly into SNES era emulation, Neo Geo etc. I dont really care about early 3D games. So this thing's power level was fine for me. By the same token, the 4" display and 4:3 ratio were strong selling points. Another thing I've really loved was, RG 40 XX H is basically plug and play out of the box. Maybe because it was my first one, but I really struggled with setting the 2+ up. And even now, it'll sit for a few months and I forget all my hotkeys when I got back to it, with no easy way to look them up. This one, you can use the menu key in play of all the hotkey functions, and it's set up right out of the box! I'm sure it's not the ideal setup but it's great for me. I can just start playing. It doesnt have the mario games preloaded (Nintendo lawyers), but I was able to easily add literally 5 SNES Mario roms and now it has everything I could want. This is even honestly decently kid friendly out of the box, which is fantastic. Compared to the 2+ which I had to struggle along for hours trying to set everything up by watching YT videos, and I still never got completely happy with it. And on top of that theres still the "I always forget the hotkeys" problem that will never go away. I could write them down somewhere, but I'll just lose that slip of paper. The quality of the RG 40 XX H is mostly great with one caveat I'll get too. Blows away my 2+. Almost feels like an Apple product or something out of the box. Nice display quality too. The LED's, I guess they're cool but I see myself leaving them turned off. The one big caveat: I noticed the bottom part of the screen on mine sticks up from the plastic just a little. Very noticeable when you run your finger the bottom edge of the display. Whereas the top edge of the screen is flush. I'm 99.9% certain this is a build quality issue (hard to observe but your unit's display for example seems flush at the bottom in the video, and I cant see why this would be done intentionally). It doesnt really affect anything, but I'm kind of OCD and it will bug me. At the end of the day, it does show a symptom of being $50 even if most of the rest of the build quality belies the price point. and finally, yes the stick are kind of in the way of the d-pad and it's kind of annoying. hard to say how much of a deal breaker this will be long term. I seemed to get used to it pretty fast. There's also the option of using the stick instead of the d-pad to play the games I suppose, to some extent. For ~$60 it's definitely not worth returning over the issues.
Thank you for answering my question! You are right, I will wait for a sale as I love my RG35xxH so much already and the upgrade is tempting but minimal. All of your content is amazing and I look forward to getting your input on the next 60 handhelds that Anbernic releases this year, lol.
I just got mine today, got it for $59 from Anbernic directly. The dpad and face button rubber membranes are stiff, takes a lot of effort to press. You are right about docking and using bluetooth controllers. It doesn't bother me that much though because i use them as a handheld not console, that ability is just a bonus. Would be nice though if it was streamlined and automatic. I might dedicate one of my anbernic as a console in the future. Right when i ordered my H, got an email from Anbernic about the NEW V model. I shoulda waited and got both. I like pocketability over comfort because you can just get 3d printed grips. I carry my hand helds in my fanny bag, so pocketability is a big thing for me. I want a portable device not a couch device. There are people who are noobs that want to buy a device based on what games it has or that is already configured. I believe you can make Retroarch save the controller to player 1 as default by opening it WITHOUT running a game and changing the setting. Once you've done this make sure Retroarch is set to save on exit in the settings and then exit. Every game going forward should now be set to player 1. I'm not sure if this has to be done with just the one controller or if you have to do this for each new controller you connect.
I don’t see how people use Bluetooth controllers with these devices hooked up to the TV. Every single handheld emulation device I’ve ever owned that I try to use a Bluetooth controller on, the latency is so bad I just can’t enjoy it. This was a great way to do a review. I really liked these questions. Also thank you for saying this thing can’t emulate above PS1. What I am finding is that some of these reviewers are using certain N64 and Dreamcast games that would happily run on a potato and passing that of as these devices will run those systems with some fleeting comment about it does not work for all games. This is quite disingenuous as it makes all the other reviewers look bad who do go out of their way to make it known these devices are not the greatest for those systems.
I find it strange that so many of these come out with ergonomics like no one actually play tested them. The analog positions look cery awkward for a smaller grip device. Fully agree on the horrid Switch type sticks too. Is there anyone out there that would rather pocketability over comfort?

Are there games where you want analog triggers but not analog sticks? I can't think of any... Seemed a bit odd to me to first state the analog sticks should go, followed by the digital triggers being a bad thing. Actually I would think the triggers could probably go away along with the sticks. If you do have analog sticks though, then yeah the triggers should be analog as well. It is a bit weird making this device bulkier by including triggers but then only going halfway on functionality. Cool video though :)
Yeah, I didn't really think the triggers comment through, I was talking off the top of my head. In fact today when recording the podcast I specifically said I'd be fine without the triggers at all.
I dont get the arguement about grip either wouldnt be hard to stick a little gel pad out of ya cheap garden gloves or something on the back then bang comfort grip simples
The firmware continues to hold these devices back. There are custom firmware options but none of them are that good and are missing some critical features. I kept hoping somebody would make a proper one for the 35XX H but it never happened. I'll be skipping this one, that's for sure.
Hey Bill. I'm sure you've heard something like this before but every time RUclips recommends me one of your videos, from the thumbnail, I think you're Tom Segura.
The perks of this handheld for me are a 4” screen which is actually not that common. And then the other thing is charging whilst docked due to HDMI out not being the USB-C port. Whereas any of the USB-C port dock options can’t dock and charge simultaneously… my only gripe of the RG556 is that.
This thing is a piece of garbage, I’ve had it for 2 days, I turn it on today and the gba emulator and all the roms that came with it have just disappeared lol

@@NerdNest sorry, when you were comparing screen sizes between 4-5 devices, you have the same Castlevania 2 on each screen. All the other devices had similar coloring for the game except the Cube was way different. Thanks for your time, Bill! 🍻🔥🤘🏼
Good catch Tony, I never noticed this. Very odd.
Stuck on Loading Screen RG40xx h
I would feel so bad if there were a RG40XX SP 😂😂😂
Comfort
Two things can you download mobile games onto it and doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi
Im only interested in playing re4 GameCube on this . Can someone tell me if it runs smooth ? That all I need 🙋♂️
If I didn't buy Rg35xxsp I would buy this RG40xx bigger screen jrpg text
Do you want Anbernic to create a 40xx or 35xx H with no or only 1 analog stick?
Perhaps a 50XX
Comfort for me.
FFG's SWRPG dice in the thumbnail?
Yep. Love that game
No one asked about Bluetooth headphones connection. 😢
See you at my show in San Antonio
is not better an RG Arc?
I don’t have the arc
question is... since they are all the same pretty much.... why buy this over any other of the sameness.
An old guy/gal has and enjoys the 35xx H but their eyes aren't what they used to be and they just wished their almost perfect 35xx H was perfect.
Ill stay rad, you stay bald Bill!
@@BigJonahJ big john, you need to copy your sd to a branded sd card, sandisk, samsung. 0 issues after that
meh if you don't like joysticks, get another model. Joysticks are really necessary for a lot of console emulation...
