This simply isn't true. South Africa's hunting industry is hugely hugely successful. People can dislike it, and have valid criticisms against some of the strange dynamics that have arisen from it (like genetic variants, etc.), but it certainly doesn't promote poverty or reduce game numbers - quiet the contrary.

It's one of the less pleasant elements of the discussion that often - particularly internationally - the narrative tends to be that Africa (always a singular unit in the international imagination!) is some Rousseauian 'other', a wild canvass on which to project the romantic dreams of Western urban audiences. It's not of course - much of 'wild Africa' has the same population density as northern Scotland. Hunting licences have certainly been abused as you say - notoriously in recent years in Zim by a cartel of South African PHs and Vietnamese rhino horn smugglers. But it's worth pointing out that this is not the norm. Hunting will be emotive for many, but in most cases in remote areas it is one of the few economic impetuses behind retaining 'wild' areas and their species. Until we come up with something better - or indeed, those who oppose hunting start funding their own conservancies - it makes little sense blindly to oppose the trophy model. Because what's happening on the ground is simply far more complicated than this simple 'solution' would imply, however emotionally satisfying people may find it.
@Anthony Poaching (in its widest sense, including ivory/horn smuggling, bushmeat, and killing by farmers) is of course the biggest enemy here. Few cats for example can cross farmland, and when the latter is increasing rapidly, the available habitat and corridors are shrinking also. The moral amongst farmers is 'shoot, shovel, shut up': kill the leopard, bury it, and trust no one asks any questions. I don't blame the farmers - any of us would do the same as they with our backs to the wall, particularly with some of droughts recently (where we are in Zambia, the situation is dire). Nor indeed do I blame other kinds of poachers, who are given crazily huge incentives by mediaeval medicinal practitioners in Asia, and their unscrupulous middlemen. But people should know quite how challenging it is on the ground to make space for animals - it's not good enough flying in on a helicopter every so often with good intentions, fine words, and politically acceptable bribes: there have to be self-sustaining businesses on the ground giving real value to animals and their habitat (as indeed the huge ecosystem services that they provide should merit).
@Anthony I wasn't cherry picking - just as you say, it's quite difficult to write a massive long reply to every point. It's a complex area, and both 'sides' here have valid points to make. It's a wicked problem, and we must all bury the emotional hatchet and embrace that dissonance and complexity. Because there's a real problem here, and unless we do tackle it head on, the habitat and wildlife it supports will continue to disappear and degrade month after month, year after year. Soon there won't be any argument to have.

Actually spear hunting is quite a popular sport, and a good spear hunter knows how to drop an animal very quickly so they dont suffer. As for weather the lions know they are "playing", they are wild animals that kill weak helpless creatures of other species regularly. If your child happened to be near and easy enough to run by and scoop up you can bet some lions will try. And I doubt your child is willing to "play" as it were. The lions understand to a degree that shit will kill you, just about every creature on the planet knows this. Every species that was on the near endangered list, that is also a trophy animal, has increased in population over the few last decades. That's why they didn't report about diminishing numbers in the video, because there's no way they could twist that lie into something believable. Some people can't tolerate the meat substitutes. Everybody has different dietary needs, and some require more meat than others. @Leroy Brown I think it's the EPA, but it's some gov agency. The government only gives out a certain amount of "tags" for each kind of animal and depends on location. Like in Florida only 300 bear tags can be hunted for a limited amount of time and only in certain areas. After the time is up the tag expires even if you did not kill a bear. They do it based on the population and can change the amount of tags given out each year depending.

They then come up with a number of whatever kind of animal needs to be harvested in any given year based on the last few decades of population data to try and keep the herd at a size that's healthy for them and us.

Trophy hunting isnt poaching if the local government is giving them tags to kill them. Many places, especially in Africa, document and track certain individual animals to kill. If they can find a white guy from America to pay to do it for them, the local government is happy. Doesnt make it fair though. Poaching is still a ridiculous problem though. If the government has time and resources to track an animal thats been killing babies from its own pack, they should have time and resources to track poachers imo.

@@robi6317 Growing up in my area I'd hunt 2 different types of deers, pheasants, and boar. We have so much deer on our 700sq/mi island we just blast them. The deers and the boars were both brought over by white people and they used to be a pretty bad problem. The deer would destroy commercial areas like golf courses and the boars destroy basically anything they touch. Once the boars took over the pigs that were originally here it was basically just game on. Much of the smaller forests were destroyed by boars (and from developers knocking down forests for houses and buildings). The guy in this video was a poacher and should face the consequences, but there are a lot of people that get tags from the country they are travelling to to kill an either old/dying animal or an animal that is killing other endangered animals. Like how giraffes sometimes trample baby giraffes just because they dont like them.

People can dislike it, and have valid criticisms against some of the strange dynamics that have arisen from it (like genetic variants, etc.), but it certainly doesn't promote poverty or reduce game numbers - quiet the contrary.

Hunting will be emotive for many, but in most cases in remote areas it is one of the few economic impetuses behind retaining 'wild' areas and their species. Until we come up with something better - or indeed, those who oppose hunting start funding their own conservancies - it makes little sense blindly to oppose the trophy model. Because what's happening on the ground is simply far more complicated than this simple 'solution' would imply, however emotionally satisfying people may find it.
@Anthony Poaching (in its widest sense, including ivory/horn smuggling, bushmeat, and killing by farmers) is of course the biggest enemy here. Few cats for example can cross farmland, and when the latter is increasing rapidly, the available habitat and corridors are shrinking also. The moral amongst farmers is 'shoot, shovel, shut up': kill the leopard, bury it, and trust no one asks any questions. I don't blame the farmers - any of us would do the same as they with our backs to the wall, particularly with some of droughts recently (where we are in Zambia, the situation is dire). Nor indeed do I blame other kinds of poachers, who are given crazily huge incentives by mediaeval medicinal practitioners in Asia, and their unscrupulous middlemen. But people should know quite how challenging it is on the ground to make space for animals - it's not good enough flying in on a helicopter every so often with good intentions, fine words, and politically acceptable bribes: there have to be self-sustaining businesses on the ground giving real value to animals and their habitat (as indeed the huge ecosystem services that they provide should merit).
@Anthony I wasn't cherry picking - just as you say, it's quite difficult to write a massive long reply to every point. It's a complex area, and both 'sides' here have valid points to make. It's a wicked problem, and we must all bury the emotional hatchet and embrace that dissonance and complexity. Because there's a real problem here, and unless we do tackle it head on, the habitat and wildlife it supports will continue to disappear and degrade month after month, year after year. Soon there won't be any argument to have.

Actually spear hunting is quite a popular sport, and a good spear hunter knows how to drop an animal very quickly so they dont suffer. As for weather the lions know they are "playing", they are wild animals that kill weak helpless creatures of other species regularly. If your child happened to be near and easy enough to run by and scoop up you can bet some lions will try. And I doubt your child is willing to "play" as it were. The lions understand to a degree that shit will kill you, just about every creature on the planet knows this. It's the whole reason we have a nervous system, so your physical form can decide "hey I dont like that".

Every species that was on the near endangered list, that is also a trophy animal, has increased in population over the few last decades. That's why they didn't report about diminishing numbers in the video, because there's no way they could twist that lie into something believable. Like in Florida only 300 bear tags can be hunted for a limited amount of time and only in certain areas. After the time is up the tag expires even if you did not kill a bear. They do it based on the population and can change the amount of tags given out each year depending.

If the government has time and resources to track an animal thats been killing babies from its own pack, they should have time and resources to track poachers imo.

@@robi6317 Growing up in my area I'd hunt 2 different types of deers, pheasants, and boar. We have so much deer on our 700sq/mi island we just blast them. The deers and the boars were both brought over by white people and they used to be a pretty bad problem. The deer would destroy commercial areas like golf courses and the boars destroy basically anything they touch. Once the boars took over the pigs that were originally here it was basically just game on. Much of the smaller forests were destroyed by boars (and from developers knocking down forests for houses and buildings). The guy in this video was a poacher and should face the consequences, but there are a lot of people that get tags from the country they are travelling to to kill an either old/dying animal or an animal that is killing other endangered animals. Like how giraffes sometimes trample baby giraffes just because they dont like them.
The meat from these kills goes to local villages and feed them for a while
