Spectacular podcast
As a kid I remember some film where the old mafia Don ran a council of gangsters and anyone who walked in with 10million got a seat at the table. He didn't need to know anymore than you were a good enough gangster to have 10million to hand over. In 25 years working in disaster zones and the world's most excluded and at risk populations incl hunter gatherer tribes.. I learned we have lots of fancy theories for people who's lives were much more practical than we imagine. I've always combined the two and imagined early megalithic sites were where some early authority held court or practiced religion and how did they know who local tribal leaders were in that world? Anyone who turns up with a stone gets a seat at the council table. It means you control a significant number of people, you can organise them to complete an arduous task and have enough material position that you can spare the labour at home. It's your buy in! Each stone is a different group that, for whatever reason, proved their significance by bringing that stone and earning their seat. I've seen many similar egs in the many corners of the Earth I've worked in... Although admittedly mostly it's a certain number of animals that denotes the same position/significance but that's just regional cultural detail I believe.
Anyone ever heard of something similar for megalithic construction? It's still a common practice amongst some populations today, and the populations who live the most remote and least developed lives.
They would have sailed all the way around to Southampton using animal skins as floats. imo.
