‘BoJack Horseman’ Oral History Part 1: Creating and Casting Bojack Plus Season 1’s Surprise Turn

  • Netflix’s groundbreaking adult animated series is coming to an end, with the second half of ‘BoJack Horseman’ season 6 - the final season - now available on the streaming service. For the past six years, the show has been lauded by critics for its dizzyingly surreal laughs - most of which come via some ingenious animal puns - as well as its fearless tackling of life’s lows: depression, addiction, and death are all regular beats in the tale of the ageing onetime sitcom star, BoJack Horseman. Ahead of the release of the final episodes, Rotten Tomatoes sat down with creator and showrunner Raphael Bob-Waksberg to talk about the origins of the series, how he got it sold, and how he came up with the idea of casting funnyman Will Arnett in the title role. Plus, Bob-Waksberg reflects on reactions to the show’s first season, which ranged from mind-blown to mind-melted among those who didn’t quite know what to think of this show about talking animals that was like nothing they’d seen on TV before.

@anonymous I'm glad they didn't. That would have undermined her entire storyline and the impact on both Bojack and the viewers. I'm sad it's ending, but simultaneously I'm glad it's ending on top, rather that fizzling out over several season before slowly dying out, like so many other popular series does.

This show was the first time I had ever seen Asexual representation in media. I didn't think I need any kind of representation nor did I care about it, but the fact that I instantly happy cried for so long at that scene seems to suggest otherwise. I don't think I had ever happy cried before that. The fact that Todd said he think he might be "nothing" before he found out he was asexual hit me so hard because "nothing" was what I identified as for years before I found out asexuality was a thing. I'm very grateful to the creators.

If I wasn't in a depressed state of just catatonically watching Netflix, I don't think I'd have gotten through the first season. I remember texting friends during it. Me: "Hey, I'm watching that Bojack show."/Friend: "Is it good?" Me: "Eh, it's alright." I liked it just enough to keep going, but it wasn't blowing me away.
I don't remember when that changed, but I think it was after "Live Fast, Diane Nguyen" I was suddenly hooked on Bojack and pushing it on everyone, trying to convince my friends to just keep watching to the point where all the seeds of the early episodes come together into something amazing. A couple of my friends got onboard, and Bojack was our buzz show for 5 years. Everyone else just doesn't understand when I would say things like "I'm about to watch the new season of Bojack, so if I'm horribly depressed for the next week, you know why."

Friends of mine who don't like Family Guy write those first few Bojack episodes off as more of the same, and friends of mine who do like Family Guy don't have room for another show that seems like it's doing the same thing, so those first episodes are a hard sell.

Today I consider it the best show of the 2010s. Not one of the best, not best in animation - the best. Hands down. Full stop.

Whenever I watch these kind of interviews with directors, there’s a lot of stuff where I think "oh... they meant it like THAT" or "I didn’t really feel this way" or something like that. But with this interview, the only thing I’m thinking is "that guy knows exactly what he’s doing". Really amazing the kind of insight and feeling he has for how his decisions are going to impact the viewer.

I started watching this show because I had nothing else to watch. Little did I know this would turn out to be one of my favorite shows ever. It's so well written and the voice actors are amazing. Some episodes are truly gut punches and makes you think about life challenges and takes you into places that are uncomfortable to think about but absolutely real.

I was one of those who thought the show wasn‘t for me because of the silly beginning😂 a look over my brother‘s shoulder while he was watching season 5 made me try it again, and this time I stuck with it. Have watched the entire show twice, in the process or rewatching a third time with my boyfriend❤️ loving the show!!

7:13 Yeah, I got tricked alright, I just like to put cartoons on to let it play in the background as I go to sleep, but Bojack was too good to be background noise and in the end I was hooked and when I noticed I was tricked it was too late and I was in too deep.

I came across bojack after a terrible break up and a year of emotional turmoil breaking the cycle of abuse.... I was looking for a fun show to distract me. It took me months to finish the first season because I wasn't hooked. I saved the days I watched on Tuesday. Then a coworker who I became friends with wanted to watch it so we binged the first season together. We would meet after work and watch 3 episodes. This lasted a week. Then I told my therapist how I started watching a show to get back into claiming my enjoyment for my hobbies again. She said you might like the show more if you get past the first season. That made me question her why. She said another client of hers said it helped them under trauma better. I was like what no it's a show about a horse. Then curiosity hit me. I started the second season and was immediately hooked. I started realizing that I was struggling the same way bojack was. I have unstable relationships and self harm and suicidal thoughts. I had to keep taking breaks from watching because someone the abuse lined up so much with mine. At times it did trigger me but it helped me process emotions that I bottled up for years. Any abuse that my family did to me was always pushed under a rug or I was told I remember wrong or lied. My grandmother also got dimenta recently so times arrow helped me understand the illness better. I honestly feel so empty with the show being canceled. I just wanna know if bojack lives or if he really is dead. This revelation of being quiet for years about most of my abuse made me start writing. I am writing my memoir of my life so someone else out there can relate to it and heal from thier trauma knowing they are not alone. I really hope bojack comes back....

I’m not a huge fan of watching movies or shows but this show truly was something else and I don’t think we’ll ever have anything like this again. Bojack Horseman is such a beautiful, realistically depressing, funny, and terrifying allegory for life and the central themes of overcoming, having hope, and dealing with life’s bullshit and still trucking through it because all you can do is keep going is beautiful. It forces you to look at the big picture and really think about the things that matter. This show changed me and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to see this masterpiece.

Thank you to the animators, you Bob, the voice actors just everyone really. Truly one of the best animated shows out there. I know the first season gets quite a bit of flack I really enjoyed it though tbh. With all the episodes it says a lot when not one of them really was bad. Sure it repeated a few story beats towards the end but still. Granted was a little let down with the last episode but I didn't feel cheated though. Didn't feel screwed over which with how some shows end is a hell of a feat. Here's to another awesome show Bob and one of the best tv shows out there.
