In 1992 First Call released a pair of videos on vocal styles. One of those videos contained this jazzed-up version of "O Sifuni Mungu." It's simply amazing!
It's May 17 2023 and I find this song as refreshing as it was when I first heard it way back in 1988. We had little singing groups in school that would try to out do each other on who performed it best. It's a call to praise God. Was drawn to it in my daily devotions. By the way, as a native Kiswahili speaker I must say the group does a good job on the pronunciation, much better than some of my fellow country folk! Their diction is good.
What's up with all the racial comments here? This is a Christian song meant to praise God. There is no race, gender, creed or any other petty difference between brothers and sisters in Christ. Lets raise the bar a little and see each other through the red blood of Jesus. We all look the same that way. . .
Hi, sorry for bothering you. Would you like to translate the lyrics? It will be nice to know from the speaker directly, I had tried Google translate but there were some I couldn't understand. Viumbe vyote vya Mungu wetu na Mfal me wetu O sifuni Mungu Pazeni sauti Ilinas iwimbwe Watu wote, vyumbe vyote, awaye yote, sifu Mungu Thank you in advance!
@@elladohana9699I used to have this song on a cassette tape back in the day. Many of the lyics are song in English by the group, but as I recall, there was a translation inside the cassette. May I suggest Google searching lyrics for O Tsifuni Mungo by First Call. Be blessed!!!
I woke up this morning, April 11 2023, hearing the word Imbeni in my Spirit. I remembered that years ago, I used to listen to a song with that lyric in it, but I could not remember more than a couple words from it, and did not know what Imbeni meant. Turns out it is the Swahili word meaning "SING", and after much searching I finally found the song by the group First Call. It's Called "O TSIFUNI MUNGO"!
We are singing this in choir. And so far this my favortie song that we have done :) At first my choir didnt wanna do the song cuz it looked really hard, but now we love it :)
I did this song back in 7th grade choir and I had the opening solo. On the night of the concert I was terrified of singing in front of all the people and I kept praying that I wouldn't have to do it. Just as the concert was about to start the sirens started going off. There was a tornado in the area. There was no damage or injuries. And I never got to sing that solo but 10 yrs later I still think it's funny that I knew it would take an act of god to keep me from singing and that's what happened.
they sang this song in a concert with my school district and it caught my attention cuz it praises God, and i didnt expect that cuz its a public skool... and then they played it at our church during the slide show of a missions trip 2 africa!!! i like this song a lot!!!!!!!!
I remember singing this in choir! It was one of the funnest songs I've ever done!I couldn't help but sing along and bop my head with the words, though I can't say pronunciation was as good as theirs. c:
To the person who was wondering about the piano part, First Call released a music book of many of their popular songs. It is not for the faint of heart! This song has the trio's parts, a four-part background singer part, and the piano part. It is an amazing book, and I wish I could find my copy!
@jchard6 - Thanks for commenting! The man you see in the video co-wrote this song with a friend of his who spoke Swahili. I imagine that friend coached these three so that they could pronounce it all correctly! :)
On this same VHS, Bonnie (the blonde) talks about recording in the studio, and that they've often been told they look like "they're landing airplanes" when singing. She explained that in the studio the most important thing is the sound, NOT body language. However, in concert the sound and body language work together. So watch some of the vids of them in concert and see if you notice a difference!
First of all, thank you algorithm for putting this before me since I looked it up a little while ago (not this version, but we sang this in youth choir and I wanted my kids to hear it). This is pretty good, but it's lacking that bass line that made this song great (for me).
@missourigal82 - LOL @ your comment. In interviews the girls have said they were accused of trying to "land airplanes" in the studio! Bonnie (the blonde) commented that in the studio your entire focus is on the sound, and you will move your body and your face in ways that you wouldn't normally in concert, because in concert it's about the whole experience (sound + movement + crowd, etc.). If you watch them in concert you won't see the exaggerated movements you see here. :)
Thanks for posting this sound file. I also love the song "O Sifuni Mungu". Thanks to Marty McCall and others for composing this song & its tune as an adaptation of St. Francis Assisi's hymn "All Creatures Of Our God & King".. I added this video to a post about this song on my cultural blog. Google Pancocojams O Sifuni Mungu (Information, Videos, & Lyrics). I'm trying to identify the exact year of First Call's original recording of "O Sifuni Mungo". Does anyone know that date?
The cougar clip from 00:14-00:16 sounds like the old Washington State University Cougar snarl we've heard for so many years at games. Is that where you got it? Are you a Coug too? Thanks so much for posting these!
Awesome song, this is really energetic, and they're all fantastic singers! The movements are a little scary, and they're a little OVER enthusiastic! haha!
@missourigal82 LOLOL! It's true! But speaking as a person with session studio experience, I guess it just helps you concentrate while you're focusing on your pitch and your timing., LOL. I'm actually attending a recording of this song in the future and now I'm going to be thinking about your comment & trying not to laugh out loud during the session!!!
I love the song, and I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but.. These.. three people are the most obnoxious people to WATCH sing. They sound wonderful, but... I donno.

However, the correct spelling is "O Sifuni Mungu". 🙂
I love the way the 2 women really get into it. They have the beat down, they really act like they're enjoying this song
I love this group. I'd dearly love to hear "The Future" by them. That was one of my all time favorite christian songs.
We are singing this in choir. And so far this my favortie song that we have done :) At first my choir didnt wanna do the song cuz it looked really hard, but now we love it :)

@JalousYet - Well, the guy you see in the video actually co-wrote the song! He wrote it with the help of a friend who is fluent in Swahili.
am Kenyan & I think you guys have done a great job with this song! great pronunciation
my choir won all region for this song we did it in 2006 for the jazz madrigal regional festival
Very good with the pronunciations. Great song

All creatures (Viumbe vyote)
Everybody (Awaye yote)
Praise the Lord (Sifu mungu)
Saudades.
First Call não conheci ainda nenhum trio tão afinado como vcs.
Abraços dos irmãos brasileiros
Some of the singers are a little enthuastic...but I LOVE this version of this song. I though the origional was great, but this just blows me away =]
Amo ouvir todas as músicas dos Firts Call. Eu os ouço há muitos anos!
We sing this in my choir. Im addicted to this song. I love it
Oh, 90's. Sometimes I find I don't miss you as much as I thought.

It's good, but I like the song better when sung in a choir, because that's what the song was originally meant for, to praise God as a crowd.
hello there. My choir is going to perform this song. great song.
This song rocks! I'm glad we didn't have to move like that when we sang it in chorus though.
Were singing this in chior.
XD
Tis an awesome song!
i got the second one at my school. its so exciting.

"landing planes" Hee.
@arowgoesrawr me too =D
where's the bass part?
SAT just doesn't quite sound right
please, in sapanish?
Love this group and this song, but they kept screwing up the lyrics...and showing their reactions to doing so...
The blonde chick needs to keep her hands down.
seriously...they look like they are trying to do the robot and failing miserably
i have no idea what is wrong with the lady in the yellow. can't keep her hands STILL!!!!!!!!!!
If you sing this in a really deep voice and without the rhythm, it turns into a satanic chant to summon the dead. Trust me, I've done it.
@JalousYet And you should stop overfeeding your kid TOO MUCH CHEESE. HAHAHAHHAHAHA.
I love the song, and I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but.. These.. three people are the most obnoxious people to WATCH sing. They sound wonderful, but... I donno.
Sounds like the Lion King!
