Hi Kevin, Honesty you must be known as one of the politest, friendliest and most skilled skipper's on the deep blue sea! I don't think many could do what you do as you wave and nod hello to everyone ☺️👍

Short tacking into harbors, that's why I put my staysail on a boom. I know it's a tradeoff, but one I'm willing to live with. Nice play by play on the maneuvers.

Kevin your commitment to sailing is inspiring. I’m no expert, but I feel like so many sailors would just turn on the engines in many of the situations throughout your video. Also your boat is a thing of beauty. Love the aesthetic and the color of your sails. Best of luck to ya man
I would indeed, I had a boat sans engine (C&C 25) and now a Catalina 30, and I have truly come to love my little old reliable M-30, shifting anchorages "hoist" the iron genny, slog to windward, "hoist" it again. Docking, anchoring,
Great video buddy. It’s nice you show the bad days and not just the easy stuff about the cruising life. People think it’s all boobies and beers. Life can get pretty hard out there. This is why you are my favorite sailing channel. Real Stuff...
Tip of the hat to your seamanship; nothing more than a slightly open head port to show for that challenging day. I call that a resounding success. Most others would have a turtled dinghy to tend with on a day like that. Well done! Trying not to complain that your guitar was interrupted..... I do enjoy it. Fair winds to you and Ruth Avery!
Nice boat handling with those shot-tacks. I used to practice that sort of thing in the center of the main channel of Marina Del Rey aboard my Flicka. Comes in handy when the chips are down. Something I like to do when faced with tacking upwind in lighter air with a contrary swell (and it's always contrary isn't it lol...) is to backwind the jib a bit as I come through the wind. This pushes the bow down to leeward so I don't get caught in irons. It requires perfect timing and line / tiller handling, but it works as long as you're able to release the windward sheet and haul in the leward sheet quickly enough, while heading back up. I feel your pain (a little bit - I now have a boat with a diesel inboard and electric windlass lol) on having to bail out of that anchorage. Last week I was anchored out in Paradise Cove in Malibu. I use Predict wind for forecasting, and pay for the 1km resolution models which I've found to be dead accurate 90% of the time. It's that other 10% that's the problem. Had a perfect forecast for light offshore air turn into a not so perfect 20 knot forecast of onshore wind with a 20 mile fetch across the bay, starting of course at 1:00am and blowing 'till 4:00. Now I have 250' of chain, and a Rockna anchor that's 50% bigger than recomended for 50 knots of breeze, so safety was'nt really an issue. But comfort sure as hell was! So you know the drill...weigh anchor in the dark, and in my case, motor the 25nm back to port on a cold moonless night. ....and people think cruising is just one long vacation filled with umbrella drinks and scantily clad females under palm trees on white sand beaches. Probably because showing me cursing while weaving through a minefield of unlit lobster pots in pitch black darkness and 40 degree weather on the cover won't sell any magazines. But that's a big part of the lifestyle - especially trying to avoid it! ;-)
True! But boats have gotten flimsier in response, and seamanship like yours is a dying artform as well. I fear we are a dying breed, but then I watch a new generation of young adventurous people on RUclips buying, fixing and sailing old boats over the horizon and I take heart. Perhaps sailing, like guitar driven rock and roll will never die! Cheers!
there’s the plan, and what happens! had to work for it this day for sure. but you kept the keel free from the bottom, and pushed thru. it is starting to be the time for change as well, pretty soon time to be heading north. cheers!

I really enjoyed you showing us the close tacking and squall ramifications. Those that don't sail may miss the significance, but being engineless puts you into situations you MUST sail out of.... a skill every sailor should have, but sadly, many turn on their motor and rely so heavily on it, some lose their boats when the inevitable happens and the motor quits. That would be fine and good as long as the loss of their boat was all there was to it... but it isn't... ever increasing fees and restrictions on everyone else is the ultimate result. Great video. I’m still learning and was wondering, you said you doused the stays’l, so then continued to carry a full main in gusts of 40? I guess a heavy gaffer can do that?
Hi Old 25. If you are referring to the 9 minute mark you will see that there is a reef in the main. In fact I think it has a reef in in most of the vid. As he was about to enter the channel there was no room / time to do anything with the main, but to commit and run with it. Years of experience sailing and particularly with Ruth on show there. Kevin's skills are such that he makes things look easier than reality.
The main had one reef, and I was fisherman's reefing (just easing the sheet and nosing up to spill the wind out), but it was not easy being in the narrow channel.
