My grandfather invented and built the first Onion Harvester. He never patented it, it's a shame. However, his machine you didn't need to cut off the tops as the machine did it, it also sorted the sizing of the onions and you didn't need people on the machine. A local farmer bought it a few decades ago off my grandfather when he retired. The farmer stated it works better than the modern machines today. He is going to donate it to the museum when he is finished with it.

He invented it as he was the biggest onion grower in Australia and employed a lot of women mainly to pick the onions. So he design the machine and drew up plans and got a factory to build it but they didn't do it right, so my grandfather and dad went to the factory at night and built it correctly. Not bad for an Italian immigrant who didnt have much education and came to Australia with nothing. He worked for others for a while. He was locked up during the war because he was an Italian. He made him a little bitter because he had to hard labour. After a little while after the war he started in a new area and started his life over. He was a tough man, but highly respected man. I found a lot of things about him from other people over the years. He died in the 1980s.

Your video is a great reminder of the value of patience and perseverance. It takes a lot of time and effort to grow and harvest melons and oranges, but the end result is so worth it. And the fact that you're able to make a living by selling them at the market is even more impressive. Keep up the great work! And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

I remember when we were young (I started at 12) we cut the tops off the onions manually. You walked up and down those rows grabbing several onions at a time and cut off the tops at once..all while walking bent over. It was back breaking work and your hands smelled like onions for weeks. Sometimes the farmers wanted them put in gunny sacks. We had luttle metal baskets we filled then poured into the sacks as we walked and worked and dragged the sack with us until full. I still have the scars on my hands from cutting myself accidentally while working or sharpening my knife. So much new technology now.
