I've bought the pricey special wig shampoo, and I've just sloshed a wig around in the sink with some dishwashing liquid; and honestly haven't noticed much of a difference between the two. That Bambu Silicone conditioner, though - now, THAT stuff really makes a difference! It's a pain, because you have to smear it all over the wig and then let it soak in a Ziploc bag for hours: definitely time consuming. But it makes it really soft!

I know this is an old video but it’s still a great one. I had trepidation about washing a wig I know needs it, so I started watching videos. Your video gave me the confidence to do it! Thank you so much.
Excellent! Fake Hair Mama uses Dr. Bronner castile soap and since I have it on hand that’s what I’ve been using with a spritz or two of my Jon Renau detangle spray instead of conditioner. So far so good and since I’m ultra sensitive to products and fragrances I use the unscented castile soap. Thanks for doing such an amazing job on this series. Your hard work is recognized and appreciated!
Thanks for another great video. I do have one more suggestion. Be mindful of your water source. I have a well and I just don't trust the integrity of my water where my wigs are concerned. We use a Berkey filter for our drinking water but I prefer to use bottled water, maybe even distilled to wash my wigs. I grew up with hard water in the house and we all had an orange tint to our hair, I don't know what might happen if you use a water softener either. So, be careful there.
Another great video, Denise :-) I, too, buy the large size Belle Madame - their shipping charge to New Zealand is, surprisingly, very good. Instead of a towel, I use a top quality extra large synthetic chamois (mine is made in Germany). Removes more water, so faster drying. Have also used a sports style micofibre towel, but the chamois is my first choice. Just make sure you hide it from any car fanatics ;-)
@@heywigsister My chamois does double duty - I use it as a mat when I hang the wig to dry; the chamois is still sufficiently absorbent enough to soak up the drips as the wig dries without soaking the floor :-)
Great video! Thank you Denise. After having my 2 wigs for 15+ years (haven’t worn them for years) and I just found out I had to wash them! Hahaha I washed them both and they went back to the same style as when I bought them. I’m going to try some trimming, thinning, and experiment a little with them. They’re just not my style or color anymore, but they can still help me! Love your videos-I’m a visual learner and I like the step-by-step you use. You da’ best!!! 😊
This was a lot of good information! Nicely done. I've been wearing and rehabing wigs for 36 years, and I've always used woolite, or coolove, a product like woolite that I can't find anymore. I live in the desert, where the wind can be ferocious, so aquanet is my best friend, however it takes a good soaking to loosen that stuff up. I have found fabric softener to be either useless, or sticky, so I just rinse very well. I've had wigs last for 20 years, not fancy wigs that cost a fortune, just modacrylic fiber... Having a steamer is a must, just practice on an old wig, and you may find the old wig comes back to life. This video is detailed, with great information.

This may sound like a stupid question (I’m still waiting for my 1st wig to arrive), once the wig is fully dried do you comb it with a wide tooth comb, finger comb it, or something else? Is it the same for curly, wavy, and straight synthetic wigs? Thank you.
Hi Denise 🙂I just came to see your washing a wig video. My question is once dry what do you do to finish it? A lot of videos I watch never go to this next step. I think that could be helpful for newer wearers or for people that just want to see how others do the styling part. Have a blessed day and thanks for reading my comment.
With synthetic wigs you don't have to do anything... the style just springs back. No styling, no product needed. That is probably why no one shows anything, because there isn't anything to show.

Yes, water is fine.... that is how I keep my wigs looking good between washing, especially curly ones. I haven't noticed an odor from wearing wigs... is it any wig or just certain ones?

@@Maleezza so I know people will use Bobby pins to secure their wig, but I never had much success with that. My hair was simply too fine and slippery. I have found that a good wig grips is ALL I need... prior to finding a wig grip that worked for me (they are NOT all created equal) I used to use It Stays and just secure the front and that worked great for all day wear. @@heywigsister yes, when something is bathing in liquid fabric softener (added to water) whether it is fabric, wigs, they turn more flammable! When the fabric is synthetic outch! My cousin caught on fire while cooking! She died a couple of days after! The coroner’s report stated that fabric softener was found in the clothes she was wearing and it was an accelerant!
Yes, you definitely can.... just remember that Human Hair wigs do not benefit from the scalp oils that hair on our head does, so try to stay away from products that have a lot of alcohol or drying ingredients. The less chemicals in it the better.

I don't think that is horrible, not if it worked for you! I am a fan of wearing my wigs absolutely as long as I can before washing... if they don't stink then they must be good, lol.... as for how you washed them, it could be the shampoo although I have had a least 2 wig sisters tell me they use baby shampoo and love it. Fabric softener turns the wigs more flammable! Read the Caution on the bottle!
Really? Wow! Does it do that to clothes and sheets as well?
@@heywigsister yes, when something is bathing in liquid fabric softener (added to water) whether it is fabric, wigs, they turn more flammable! When the fabric is synthetic outch! My cousin caught on fire while cooking! She died a couple of days after! The coroner’s report stated that fabric softener was found in the clothes she was wearing and it was an accelerant!
A huge help to a wig newby. Thank you
Can you provide a link to the large size of Belle Madam conditioner?
Here you go: continentalwigs.co.uk/belle-madame-accessories/1061-44310-balm-belle-madame-synthetic-hair.html#/2259-size-1000ml
Thanks, Denise. Do you still have a code for reduced shipping?
...or was that for an order over $100? sorry...brain fog!
@anitacrosby9256 It was for orders over $100. But unfortunately, they have discontinued the free shipping codes... at least for now.

What about human hair wigs? Can you use conventional hair products?
Yes, you definitely can.... just remember that Human Hair wigs do not benefit from the scalp oils that hair on our head does, so try to stay away from products that have a lot of alcohol or drying ingredients. The less chemicals in it the better.
@@heywigsister Oh, thanks so much Denise, you are a gem.
Thank u
Hier sind Super Perücken und sehr gut ist alles etklärt
Do you wash human hair wigs differently than synthetic wigs?
Yes.... I don't soak them in the water. I pretty much follow the process in this video: ruclips.net/video/TdhreKRTWRY/видео.html
@@heywigsister thank you!
Thank you for this. I have been wearing wigs for at least 10 years and I washed my wigs at first and they always looked awful when I was done so now…..I wear them for months and then just get a new one. Isn’t that horrible??!!! I always used watered down baby shampoo. Maybe that was the problem….
Did you use any sort of conditioner after? If you didn't that could have been the issue.... I honestly have never had a wig look awful after washing with the products I showed in this video.
@@heywigsister first thank you for your response. You don’t always get one on here.
I did use a small amount of conditioner.
After I watched your video I went and smelled my wigs and they don’t stink. Lol. Thank God!
It costs money for u to see these videos. She buys items ( wigs, rinses, etc.). If u choose to stop watching her videos, that is ur choice. Bye-bye.
PS. Everybody who records & posts videos on a regular schedule asks for donations.
I don't need a reason to want a new wig. Lol
Lol, you and me both, sister!!
