  • 15 different depictions of Queen Mary I of England on screen in historical movies and tv shows. Sometimes the villain in Elizabeth I's or Jane Grey's story, sometimes the victim of her father Henry VIII. Some critically acclaimed, some forgetable. Documentary, fantasy, and comedy (like Horrible Histories) are not included.

I love how ‘Becoming Elizabeth’ is one of so little projects that actually showed Mary and Edward’s conflict with religion which historically happened. Fantastic acting.

I love Romola Garai's Mary in Becoming Elizabeth. I actually find myself rooting for her in it more than Elizabeth's character. The portrayal seems more historically accurate and she has a sense of a tragic figure, which I believe in part she was. (History portrays her terribly) Also the hair coloring being closer to Elizabeth's red hair is the most accurate I've seen.

Janet Lapotaire's acting is always magnificent, no matter her role. But Romola Garai is a *fantastic* actress, and I feel like they perfectly depicted Mary with her! Her costuming, her hair, her motivations and acting choices... it all felt real and genuine to the historical figure, treating her like a real person (good and bad) rather than a caricature of Bloody Mary as she's so often depicted. I feel like it's the most fleshed out and honest depiction of her yet.

At that time she probably was. The mass burnings, the humiliation of a non pregnancy, her husband leaving, not to mention her stressful childhood all contributed to her poor mental health by this time. She knew she was dying and all the things she desperately wanted never came to fruition: a husband who loved her, an heir and a Catholic England.

@@rayarena879 I recently listened to a podcast (video) on RUclips called "The medical Humanities: The Queen's quickening.." It's only a little over 12 min. long and it speaks about this very subject. I went to the webpage and there are a lot of sources quoted but I have not looked all of them up yet. Mary's court I'm sure was very dignified at first. She had a great education and the backing of the counsel and the people. But once she thought she was pregnant, she seems to have mentally deteriorated. There were some theatrics during her confinement and when Phillip left. Now are all of the sources quoted by historians or by amateur opinions, I don't know. I am curious to see how many of the references are accurate. If you have time, give it a listen, it's quite interesting.

22:49 Are we supposed to be rooting for Anne in this scene? I feel like they tried to portray Mary as menacing, but I just cant see it. Is Mary supposed to be head over heals for the woman who bullied and replaced her mother?
Also, the existence of Mary makes the whole "Anne as a feminist" angle so stupid. Henry divorced Catherine to marry Anne because he believed Mary couldn't rule. Anne became queen because Henry didnt believe a girl could rule. Then you have shows like this where Anne is angry that Henry doesn't want Elizabeth to succeed him.
Honey, if he believed a woman could make an effective monarch, he wouldn't have married you

I liked the lady in Elizabeth R, Daphne Slater, bc the portrayal showed her devotion to her mother and the Catholic religion, her obsession with Phillip of Spain, how terrible and pitiful it became when she was convinced she was pregnant, but had uterine cancer, her terror that the 'child' was dead in her womb. It also delved into the dichotomy of her love/hate relationship with Elizabeth, whom she equated with Elizabeth's despised mother, Anne Boleyn.
Mary considered Anne a witch who used sorcery to kill Mary's beloved mother, Queen Catherine of Aragon and to capture the affection (lust) of their father, Henry Tudor.
Phillip of Spain's attraction to young Elizabeth and his influence over Mary in saving Elizabeth from execution are also included.
Mary has been described as having reddish hair, pale skin, clear blue eyes, a hoarse voice, and being small in stature (short).
It's amazing how much Ms. Slater looks like the descriptions and how well she captured Mary's personality and the conflicts which influenced her life and her decisions.
Unlike her sister, Mary ruled by emotion rather than intellect, intelligent as she was. Her heart ruled her head.
She became a bitter woman and died a terrible death.
I didn't like her, but I felt pity for her.
