Can't help but feel bad for Mary after learning what she endured during her younger years. All in all she can be seen as both a victim and a villain. Mary started out as a victim, but became a villain due to the actions of her vile father. For the majority of her life while Henry VIII was alive, she sought constantly to earn his respect, approval and unconditional love that any normal parent would give their child, but never received any of that from him. It was right at 1:02:00 where she asks "Have I pleased you?" that one can clearly get the idea she wasn't speaking with God but her father.

She also rejected her husband in a way. She loved him, but she didn't let him overrule her in the matters of the kingdom. Philip tried to manipulate her and have things his way, but even though he was a king in title, Mary made sure he had the role of a consort and her of a monarch. She also passed an act to ensure that future queen regnants have more power than their male consorts. This was one of the main reasons Philip rejected her.
And she was much more loved by her people than we are led to believe. Protestant propaganda led people to believe otherwise, but even upon her death she was still popular with a good amount of the english people. Just not as popular as before

she was both. The only surviving child of Queen Catherine whom many believed was poisoned as she refused to step aside. i always felt it was cruel keeping mpther and daughter separated. Declared a bastard by her father who did finally welcome her back to court once she agreed to accept him as supreme head of the church only to be declared a bastard again y her brother.
She became a villian when she became queen though she hadnt wanted to cut off Jane Greys head. A disasterous marriage phantom pregnancies and the constant campaign to turn england Catholic again Ive always believed drove her mad and hastened her death at 42

Don't forget also that the Plantagenet Countess of Salisbury, Margaret de la Pole (the daughter of Edward IV's brother George, the one who was reputedly 'drowned in a butt of Malmsey') was like a second mother to Mary. Henry VIII, with the traditional Tudor paranoia, had her executed when she was in her sixties, a good age for the time. It is said that even the men who witnessed this, brutal as those times were, were shocked at the spectacle as the Countess refused to lay her head on the block, citing her innocence and the executioner had to hack her to death whilst chasing her. Another tragic loss for Mary.

Actually, she was not a monster. She was a saint compared to Henry viii, Elizabeth i and Edward vi.
Mary killed 300 people over 5 years. That is about 60 people a year.
Elizabeth killed thousands of people, including 450 in ONE day in 1569, more than Mary killed in 5 years.
Edward had a few thousand people executed in his 6 year reign, and Henry killed tens of thousands of people.
These are all statistical facts. You could say that Mary burned people alive, but Elizabeth and Henry often had them hung, drawn and quartered, which is 3x more brutal.

I have been very unsure of what to think of Mary as a whole, if I should follow the legend of the villainous queen, or be completely sympathetic to the wronged princess. Although Mary had a very tragic childhood after her parents divorced, she became a monster and she turned into the bloody legend that she is remembered as. As a princess Mary was so sweet and beautiful. By the time Mary became Queen of England, she had become a tyrant and became so cruel that she was hated and feared. While I do feel very sorry for Mary, I am sure that killing others for being protestant, being cruel and brutal, and taking your rage anger and frustration as well as wish for revenge was not the answer. I honestly see Mary as a victim and a villain, A victim as a princess and a villain as a queen.

Dragon Princess The Bible was written in Latin, which she knew. She read and understood it, the commoners however, didn't until it was translated. She believed that by burning the protestants alive, she was burning away their sins and purifying them for an afterlife in Heaven. With the exception of Cranmer, she wasn't killing them out of revenge, she truly believed she was saving their souls . She wasn't ignorant and uneducated, she was a fanatic and didn't think that her subjects should be able to make up their own minds and read the Bible themselves. Mary had one of the saddest stories. Torn from her mother and allowed only to meet once in 5 years to see each other. Was nearly killed by his own father for her supreme faith in GOD. Declared illegitimate by his own father the king Henry VIII. She was only welcome back the moment she compromises her own faith and conscience to save her court and so she professes that the king is the supreme ruler above all? and robbed of her own last will and wishes to be buried next to her own mother. Not given many accolades by the history of course from the Church of England, But highly acknowledge by the history and the universal church. Bloody Mary is an overkill since most of the Tudor family killed and burned people more than Mary did.

Victim most definitely, Mary is one of the most tragic, unfairly treated figures in history. The so called "Bloody Mary" title was essentially a conjured up myth of Protestant propaganda to make her out as some bloodthirsty monster, while completely ignoring the tragic life she was forced to endure before she even became Queen.
You could write a freaking book detailing all the horrible things this poor woman endured and struggled with throughout her life. From the way her Father treated her, how he abandoned her mother, being cast out from the line of succession, having to live in fear of being killed by that homewrecker Anne Boleyn, being forced to care for her half sister Elizabeth (humiliation is an understatement) The almost countless times she was denied happiness, as well as all the efforts made to deny her the right to practice her own religion, which was the only thing that helped her endure all of what she went through, she not only suffered psychological trauma but physical illness much of her life as well. It's very likely that she suffered with some form of PTSD.
Concerning the Protestants she burned roughly 300, by the way it was the Protestants who did everything in their power to prevent Mary from becoming Queen by manipulating her younger brother Edward to remove her from the succession thus violating the 3rd succession act, passed by Parliament in 1543 and decreed in his father Henry VIII's own will. Then when Mary finally did become Queen she immediately had to deal with at least 2 protestant rebellions even after she initially declared that she would not force anyone to follow the Catholic faith, so she burned those who she believed were heretics.
Henry VIII killed almost 60,000 Catholics and Protestants
Elizabeth I also executed tens of thousands of Catholics and Protestants
Mary killed 300, a fraction of those body counts and yet she's the monster?
Again Prodestant propaganda did its job well and proved that history Is written by the winners.
Mary was no saint, and I don't condone her actions nor anyone else who kills out of vanity. But seriously history failed to be objective and fair in Mary Tudor's case as it's done so frequently.
One more thing, I'm sick of hearing how the Reformation was such a great thing, I don't think the 30 years war that killed around 8 million people was a good thing. And for what? Two corrupt religious factions engaging in who's god had a bigger D!#k . The English reformation in particular(Dissolution of the Monasteries) was similar to the Viking raids of the 8th century, only diffrence was the Vikings when they burned and sacked monasteries and churches they came by ship.

She made abhorrent choices as queen, but it’s understandable how she became that person. Henry set this whole mess in motion. Factor the religious conflicts of her day, beliefs of the time ... a disaster. Sadly, she genuinely believed she was doing right.

I have always felt sorry for both Mary and Elizabeth. Henry discarded Catherine (Mary's mother) and had Anne (Elizabeth's mother)
executed. Both girls were declared illegitimate when their brother Edward was born (in 1553-- later to be Edward VI)
I also think that BOTH Henry and Cathrine were remiss in not marrying off Mary to a foreign king when she was young. So that one
of her children might have been able to come back to England to be king. She married Philip II of Spain (in 1554) when she was 38
That was too late to reasonably start a family. They should have married her off during the 10+ years before he found Anne Boleyn.
During one of Catherine's pregnancies (her last one), Henry impregnated Bessie Blount. Henry and Bessie's child, Henry (1519-1536)
was legitimized as Henry FitzRoy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset. He did not grow up with Mary and Elizabeth. He had already
died by the time Henry VIII 's and his wife Jane Seymour's son was born (1537 - 1553) Henry's and Jane's son was later known as
Edward VI (his rule began in 1547. He ruled for 6 years, coming to the throne when he was 10 years old).
Catherine of Aragon (1485 - 1536) Married: Arthur, Prince of Wales (m. 1501--1502) Married Henry VIII (m.1509, annulled 1533)
Catherine and Henry married seven (7) years after Arthur's death.
*Catherine of Aragon's children with Henry VIII*
Daughter: ... 31 January 1510 (Miscarried at about six months gestation
Henry: ........ (1 January 1511-- 22 February 1511 (Died suddenly reason not known)
Son: ............ c. 17 September 1513 (Either miscarried or stillborn or lived a few hours)
    Son: ............ November/December 1514 (Stillborn)
[Cardinal] Wolsey wrote in a letter on 15 November that Catherine was "to lie in shortly." -- Wikipedia
Two letters in December mention Catherine lost a child. -- Wikipedia
    *Mary:* ...... 18 February 1516 *Became Queen Mary I of England (July 1553-1558)* Died: 17 November 1558
    Daughter: ... 10 November 1518 (Stillborn)
[Henrry's legitimized son, Henry, Duke of Richmond/Somerset was born 15 June 1519. His mother was Bessie Blount. See above]
[ *Henry married Anne Boleyn in 1533* Fifteen (15) years after Catherine's last child died, Seventeen (17) years after the future
Mary I had been born. Fourteen (14) years before Henry Fitzroy had been born and three (3) years before Henry Fitzroy (d. 1536)
died. Elizabeth (who became Elizabeth I) was born on 7 September 1533 (1533 - 1603) Elizabeth had no known children.]

She was a victim! Just because Henry VIII was headstrong about having a boy heir to his throne! And he unloaded his rage towards Queen Catherine of Aragon, and his own daughter who could’ve been herself a great Queen Of England, but to The King she was just a girl. Mary I carried her warrior blood through her veins through her mother and grandma Isabel I of Castile. Henry VIII’s father was known as the pre tender because it was said he was a bastard of mother lady Margaret Beaufort. She wasn’t able to conceive any children with his “father” Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond. Also, it was said According to history since the War of the Roses during Henry VII reign, him and his wife Elizabeth of York, were cursed to never having a male heir due to Henry VII executing the real king to the throne Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York. He, Henry VIII was cursed. And so on the curse followed.

Mary Tudor was definitely a victim. She truly loved her mother Katherine of Aragon and was forbidden see her. Katherine of Aragon died isolated, sad, and the cause was heart cancer. History tells the story about Mary Tudor being scolded for being against her father and growing into a bitter old sickly woman. Didn’t Mary Tudor have boyfriends as a young adult? Any friends? If her her parents divorce was her only focus...then she was a victim and was groomed to be a despot.

  • @smithamy1982

I don't understand why labels are always so black and white- good or bad, villain or victim. I've never met anyone who fits the mold of good or bad; people are more complex and have good and bad traits. The enemy may be the villain to you but they are the hero in the eyes of those who support them and vice versa. Mary was a villain in the eyes of the Protestants but the heroine in the eyes of the Catholics. She was a victim of Henry VIII's and Anne Boleyn's love story and a mass murderer of the Protestants. She wasn't born evil and to a certain degree she was made evil by the circumstances she grew up in. However, the abuse she endured in her formative years doesn't excuse the actions and choices she made as an adult; it does explain why she became such a vengeful and cruel monarch.

The whole history is just ridiculous!
Mary is Both a Victim and a Villain, however she has been affected because of her father the King wanting a son and casting her out until he had a son. Then the counsel who had the power to control a young naive king to order Mary of changing her belief (because they see it as a threat to the religion they are part of and the 'power' they have). Therefore, a lot that affected her was constant pressure from others and her not allowing to have the course of change around her and in the end she's been hated by the people, because she wasn't following change of laws. In addition, they found a new better queen even though she eventually has a terrible fate a well. Overall, their history is depressing.
