There have been a few comments about trans women in prison so I’ll expand on my thoughts here: Many of you have mentioned Demi Minor, a trans woman who was housed in a women prison who impregnated two women in the facility. Different states have different laws when it comes to this, but there are some things about this case that should be understood. These pregnancies aren’t a result of rape, but of a consensual sexual relationships she had with these women. However, all instances of intimacy between inmates is seen as violative by law. Obviously plenty of inmates have relationships so they only really end up weaponizing this when they need to. Additionally, they rolled back rulings that would allow trans women to be placed in women’s prison because of this case and even before then, it was not common for trans women to be placed in women’s prisons and it’s certainly not something that has ever happened because a man decided, right after judgement, that he identified as a woman. Demi Minor was transferred to a men’s prison where she would later attempt to mutilate herself as a way of decreasing the harassment from the men she was now housed with. This article has a pretty comprehensive look at it: theappeal.org/new-jersey-transgender-prisoner-policy-demi-minor/ My point still stands, cis men don’t go to women’s prison because they say they’re women. The very rare times trans women are sent to women’s prison has occurred when they are already well into their transition.
So a biological man inserts his biological male member into biological female inmates and it's assumed it's consensual and also that it's okay even if it is? People aren't supposed to be having children in prison like this. For years pretty much everyone but prison-fetishists were on the same page about this. What makes this okay now?
Hi, I'm just now watching your video and was about to comment about this. I truly love and appreciate you as a smart insightful cultural commentator but I don't think your point "still stands" ... up to scrutiny. Your point in the video claims the joke lands for people based on a false base of knowledge. The reality that there are people aware that women have gotten pregnant by trans women in jail is not a false basis of knowledge for that particular joke. The debate that can never be settled is this: Are some jokes offensive bc they're unfunny or are they unfunny bc they're offensive? The greatest Dave Chappelle joke is probably the one that ends with a baby selling w**d to support his children. In order for that joke to really land, there's so many offensive stereotypes about the black community one would have as a basis of knowledge. Offense and humor are subjective, but I'm left unsure why the mention of certain groups trigger such a collective reaction. Thanks.
Omg did you seriously try to justify a trans woman impregnating two women in PRISON because it was consensual (which I don’t believe for a second you can actually verify) tf is wrong with you?
@@100Percent_Zeero If I am to just butt in I think it depends who is saying it. Because if you make an offensive joke about yourself, then that becomes self depreciation humor. You more likely know the limits of a joke and an actual understanding of stereotypes and how they aren't true or understanding how they develop. The problem is that sometimes a joke in the cultural climate is too far. Okay imagine an actual trans person repeating dave chapelles joke. "at least if i go to prison i get to be with women". Like see how creepy that is and how it is confirming the prejudice that these "offensive comedians" are pushing. Thats not to say there arent funny trans jokes, there are plenty and you kind of actually need a trans or trans supportive person to actually present them since its not coming from a place of full malicious intent. Just because dave chapelle can make jokes about black people doesen't mean every joke is open for him to use, he isn't going to be taking jokes straight from 1920s or 1860s race propaganda unless used incredibly ironically. At the end of the day it really just depends if your jokes have malicious intent or not and to what degree. Because malicious intent can be avoided in offensive comedy by either acknowledging the conditions that creates stereotypes/negative aspects or by self deprecation. And of course it still needs to be written and preformed well.
@@josjos-x5s I'm glad you did "butt in" bc this is perhaps the first time I've learned and grown from a reply. I still maintain my position on the matter but I think it's better to view this as: supportive vs unsupportive, rather than Ally vs Anti. This overlaps with a broader issue I perceive: as a Gen-X, I believe Millennials have collectively rejected empathy for all persons regardless of beliefs. It wasn't intentional- it is the result of mass adoption of the internet. We mistake communication for character. Ultimately, I presume neutrality on the part of the artist (and people in general). I don't see Chappelle as supportive or unsupportive. My base of knowledge is neither incorrect or unsupportive. But if one were to bring that baggage or interpret one's art as an indication of their character, then that is precisely the mode of thought these comedians are battling. And in that, I agree.
"Grow thicker skin" say the rich men (and JK Rowling) who change their entire personalities to be transphobic the second they get the slightest bit of criticism.
I don't understand why people feel the necessity to police around what is deemed funny. If it's not for you, move on. It's called subjective comedy for a reason.

Love the fact that they wanted to make a real documentary, couldn't even pay someone to commit to transitioning, but didn't see how this tanks their argument that people are willing to transition to win a sport.
Yeah it’s one of the weaker arguments, but women’s sports still need to be their own thing. Trans women competing with cis women isn’t fair to cis women. 🤷🏼♀️
@@lesauberginesIf you cared about women’s sports, you’d be more concerned about them being paid equally compared to the men’s teams… that affects them SO much more than trans women in sports lmao. Bet you don’t even watch them.
A well-groomed man stands before you and says he doesn't feel he can truly relate to a slain underprivileged person, but instead makes jokes about Queer culture that he relates to easily... I wonder what he's trying to tell you?
And comedians like Chappelle and Gervais somehow delude themselves into believing that trans people are in power. Their logic seems to be "they are able to criticize me, therefore they must be powerful." Because, as everyone knows, only the super powerful are capable of making a fuzz on twitter.
Honestly, I don't think that comedians even think these politicized jokes are funny. I think they know that they can write them in 5 minutes, then a group of people that agree politically will go out and buy the merchandise and defend the comedian from criticism. Low effort, lots of publicity, guaranteed profit, and social protection.... and the cost of the "jokes" isn't paid by the comedian, but the community that the "jokes" are aimed at. For the comedian, it's a win all around.
That's a huge part of underground scumbag comedy going on right now. People like Dave Smith, Shane Gillis, Andrew Schulz, even Louis CK are basically appealing to that audience because you can turn that kind of offensive comedy into a reliable career. Not Chappelle sized obviously, but I think some of them like being in that underground fringe. (And yes, I know they can still be funny)

The thing I find most annoying about this discourse is how folks who are all about Chapelle and Gervais think the primary issue that marginalized people have with them is that their jokes are "offensive" nah, marginalized people often tell offensive jokes all the time. I've always believed he's a grifter but I hope that little slip was enough to make at least one person in his audience recognise that too.

I gotta love how the people telling others to grow a thick skin are the same who at the first sign of criticism jump in the hipersensitive bandwagon and claim to be persecuted, while still making money and being broadcasted.
These people are also not realizing that what’s actually happening is a trans person is existing in their vicinity and they are triggered by that to the point where it becomes one of their main talking points. It’s the height of fragility and sensitivity. They think the joke is offensive but our presence is what offends them, really.
Right? Cishet w. men have the thinnest skin ever in my experience and when they say "grow thicker skin", it's bec. they feel entitled to us meekly accepting, that they are at the "top" and expect to be allowed to "punch us" forever.
I'm a straight white cis male from Tennessee and I absolutely love this video. I have a Trans male friend whom I knew before he began transitioning. Back then, he was very sad and insecure. Now he's vibrant, happily married and a very happy person. I'm not Trans, so I don't really understand it, but I don't have to. All I know is I love seeing my friend happy.
@@notheory14 Because that's what I am. I can describe myself any way i see fit. And if you were from Tennessee you would know what it has to do with it.
As a white person I did appreciate the jokes old Dave made about white people because a lot of them were based in fact and didn't come off as derogatory, exaggerated for comedic effect certainly, but not derogatory; or he was poking fun at things that deserve to be made fun of such as racism and prejudice. New Dave's jokes, specifically those about transgender people, are blatantly derogatory and obviously based on personal prejudice. I find this particularly disappointing because I know he's capable of better and has no real reason to result to such disgusting behavior.
It’s hilarious because the same reason you claim to like “white people” jokes applies here to his transgender jokes it’s based on fact (that’s you are either born a man or woman) and making fun of the concept of claiming to be the opposite 😂 nothing has changed in his style of comedy. Piss off
Alot of black comedians reuse the same white people jokes again and again. Even when Dave did them they didn't feel fresh. Richard Prior did that many years ago. Goofy white dude voice movements are so reused, it's beyond beating a dead horse.
It's maddening/saddening to me as a cis woman, that just listening to you is worth a "thank you." It's extremely generous of you to see it that way. You have every right to expect way more than the minimum from us. Treating trans people with the same respect given to cis people is just basic decency; we're all people.
As a cis man, I agree. I don't deserve jack. I'm just doing the bare minimum required as a functioning human being with a soul. Why does this world have to be so bleak?
Dude dug his own grave for me when he called himself "the goat" the instant you say those words out loud it ceases to be true if it ever was now he's just the king of the cornfield
A similar phenomenon happens to certain authors after a time. If they've already written several bestsellers, the publisher and editors tend to back off and give them free rein, out of an unwillingness to interfere with a formula for success. This is when the authors assume they can do no wrong, therefore they get lazy and all their bad habits come out. Their books become lengthy and tedious, their prose becomes more bloated, their characters devolve into types, and their messages and themes become bastardized. You know they know better, because their later work doesn't live up to the standard of their earlier works when they were still trying to prove themselves. This is precisely how they end up jumping the shark.
I'm Swedish, and when I was little, for some reason, a lot of kids shows would have an episode where someone from "Sweden" would visit. And these epsodes would be extremely unfunny because the "Swedish" characters were wearing lederhosen and speaking with heavy german accents beacause I guess the creators got Sweden mixed up with Switzerland. That's how these comedy specials feel to me
Ahhhhh hej hej I'm from Sweden and live currently in Denver CO in the US and I get the exact same thing! Many Americans confuse our countries 😂 my own girlfriend asks me about our chocolate sometimes, and I have to remind her I'm not Swiss 😂
It might’ve not been similar to some of my school experiences, but as soon as kids found out that I lived in Germany for a few years, it would walk around doing Hitler impersonations around me, it was not good.
Wow! That was actually a really useful piece of information -- I'm Brazilian and this happens--though less often than it used to--a lot in international media depicting Brazil. Mostly American media, lol, so pretty much all media. But I remember feeling like Brazil itself was being targeted/neglected, since I thought all other countries' depictions were always spot-on. The problem is, that neglect bothered me a lot back then, because it made me fear misrepresentation of my country, with all its cultural and environmental richness; I was, however, not questioning whether the representation of other countries was accurate. Huh.
My problem with "offensive" comedy is just that it's far too easy. People who make "offensive comedy" make it seem like "this is gonna be so offensive! Nobody else is being offensive, but I'm going to say the things that everyone else is afraid to, because I'm the only person tough enough to make these jokes!" But making a joke at someone's expense is actually literally the first joke a kid comes up with. Like "you look funny" isn't intelligent, it isn't funny, it's the lowest hanging fruit imaginable. It's much harder to make a funny joke about someone that doesn't offend them. Like it's not some kind of badge or a skill or talent to laugh at someone, but it IS significantly harder to make that person laugh with you. Anyone can be offensive; it's immature child humor, but to tell an actually funny joke about someone that doesn't offend them is impressive. And don't even get me started on Roseanne's special.... It was like watching someone's creepy grandma trying to tell someone else's jokes, and then fumbling every set up, every punchline, and then pausing for cheering, NOT LAUGHTER, cheering and clapping. It was very bleak

I remember my old workplace had a sensitivity seminar regarding indigenous people and someone kept arguing how jokes against indigenous people shouldn’t be taken seriously and “we should be able to laugh at ourselves” while also taking personal offence to how statues of colonizers and slave owners were being taken down in America. We can take a joke when you’re actually clever and not just “haha indigenous people are tribal, trans people are creepy, women are sexual objects”. Dave Chapelle isn’t being rewarded for “being funny” because the trans jokes weren’t that good, he’s being rewarded for reinvigorating transphobia.
Hell, all humans are tribal. Talk to any football fan. Indigenous tribes say “We’re actually related” while casual tribes say “You and I both live within a hundred miles of where this particular sports team regularly plays.” The former makes perfect sense. The latter not so much.
The worst thing about being an older millenial comedy fan has been me coming to terms with the fact that my favourite comedians didn’t become a George Carlin, who was infuriated by the status quo and spoke truth to power, punched up, and was, more than anything, *funny* . I've had to come to terms with the fact that my faves have just revealed themselves to be over-sensitive, insensitive, entitled, marginally funny conservatives with an energy that equals that of a grandpa yelling from his porch, angry that he can no longer freely use the n-word at will
I'm an AFAB non-binary person, and I've always found Chappelle's comedy pretty derogatory toward women. It's just that for some reason, as a society, we expect women to laugh at and go along with misogyny in a way we don't expect from other groups. We falsely ascribe so much biological, determinative reality to gender. We're primed to think that when someone makes a misogynistic joke, it reflects some reality about women and you're just being a bad sport if you don't laugh. So, it wasn't surprising at all when Chapelle turned out to be a transphobe, because bigotry is usually not isolated to one group. People who hate women are going to hate trans people too. It's just part of the mindset. At least people are acknowledging the problem now.
That’s a very nuanced way of explaining it. Another thing to add, is a lot of right-wingers tend to only care about an issue if it’s personal to them. For example: if they have a close relationship to their lesbian sister, they might be more sympathetic towards lesbians. But simultaneously, might be really bigoted towards queer men and trans people. I’ve known a lot of people who only cared about an issue if it impacts them or someone they love. At the end of the day, this is why empathy and solidarity is important. Just because an issue doesn’t impact you, doesn’t mean you should leave the people it does impact to the wolves. Because in the end, when the wolves come for you, nobody will be left to help you fight them off.
No it’s more about the fact leftists hate themselves and work out their frustrated need to feel powerful out on other people. The reason you identify with oppressed people is because you feel comfortable and identify with people you think are already inferior
(Disclaimer I am saying this as an cis womxn) I definitely agree with your premise that under a patriarchy womxn & AFAB people are excepted to go along with misogynistic jokes. I can’t even remember what Chappelle’s joke about Bobby Brown was (and I don’t care about him to check) I just remember that’s why I didn’t find him funny. Because at the time it felt he was contributing to the pile on that was happening to Whitney Houston. And that to me is the crux of it- under a Eurocentric patriarchy if you’re making jokes about marginalised groups you’ll get away with it. Especially if those groups sit at intersections of oppression like black womxn, Asian Americans, working class BIPOC communities, fat queer people etc… Given that Netflix is paying him millions of dollars to do these specials I’m convinced that loads of people are actively engaging with his transphobia. They only continue to hire him because he’s getting views. His content also becomes a vehicle for other transmisogynists to write reactive pieces about him being ‘cancelled’ where they make transmisogynistic bad faith arguments in an attempt to further marginalise transwomxn. And he’s not even as funny as he used to be. I love stand up. I watch a lot of it. There are certain comedians whose outlook I don’t agree with but I watch because they putting in the work required to be funny and entertain the audience.
it's exactly for this reason that Hannah Gadsby became a target of "institutional" comedy. it wasn't until Dave used one of his show-turned-rallies to stoke a beef (which she didn't even start) that the form and content of her specials became the object of scorn from those who hate anything outside the bracket of Dave, Diceman or Blue Collar.
That... makes no sense. Someone's footing isn't the problem nor responsibility of the one offending. The one offending just so happens to be offending someone of lesser footing.
My father refuses to pay for netflix because 'everything is gay now and I don't like having this stuff shoved down my throat"'. But you bet he immediately signed up for netflix again once he found out Dave Chapelle and Ricky Gervais had new specials that were "triggering the libs"
"Most People seem more interested in hearing what a person who is not transgender has to say about being transgender, then they do hearing from a transgender person speaking about their own life and experience." I agree! That's why I'm here! Keep up the great work!
I really believe that a lot of cos people are afraid of hearing out that experience and the idea of trans people even existing blows their minds so they just can't process it. I feel like the default is always to make fun of things they don't understand. While it's ok not to be able to understand, it's not ok to belittle people you don't understand.
It seems like this is the mindset from a lot of people who aren't a part of the specific minority in discussion. I'm autistic, people love to hear about what parents of autistic kids and people have to say, but when what we as autistic people say something that challenges their biases or even makes them consider something different than the stereotypes they believe, things get nasty quick.
Thank you for saying this. I'm so tired of people telling me I'm wrong about my own lived experience as a black trans woman. I don't need your protection, fake allyship, or anything else. Just listen and believe me when I tell you when things are okay and when they are not okay.
The fact that Ben Shapiro said “an actual man” when saying that the men for his documentary didn’t want to pose as trans women, it shows that deep down he knows the fact that trans women are not MEN
I stopped listening to Dave …not because his jokes offended me (they didn’t), but because he suddenly embraced the identity of a self righteous victim.

I have definitely noticed that Chapelle’s fans/defenders have been showing a lot less energy in trying to excuse/defend Dave’s latest special - I think it’s becoming clear to a lot of people that this is clearly a personal fixation for Dave, and you can only repeat the same joke for so long before people realise that it’s just kinda weird 🤷🏼♂️

I was just curious and didn’t like that I didn’t fully understand all this gender stuff. But others seem to bond through their ignorance and the fact that they don’t want to find out, even tho they have at least some level of intrigue. Being cis we’ll never truly understand how uncomfortable gender dysmorphia is to live with, but whats to stop us from at least trying to learn? I love how many trans folks with experience/passion for comedy have been like "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed." Which is just so true, it's too hack to be offensive.
The habit of comedians to fall back into offensive "jokes" when they run out of material or nothing catches I think exposes what they personally find funny and the things they personally enjoy saying the most. I think it must be telling for the kind of jokes they must be telling in private.
I'm definitely using these talking points when this comes up in my life. You can't be a "truthteller" if you don't know what the hell you're talking about

In the UK in the 60s and 70s especially, what would be considered 'anti-woke' comedy now but back then was just racist, misogynistic and homophobic comedy was very mainstream. People got so sick of it being absolutely everywhere that there was a major movement that challenged it called alternative comedy. It got a huge backlash from the mainstream media and politicians initially, but it also resonated with people more and ended up overtaking the mainstream eventually as capitalists realised you could get more viewing figures by not exclusively pandering to bigots. Now the mainstream media is in a stranglehold from Conservatives and the far-right and they are trying to re-write the narrative by claiming 'anti-woke' comedy is made up of these poor victimised comedians who have been unfairly derided by the 'overly sensitive elites' AKA the vast majority of people. Personally I think we should stick it to these right-wing elites and encourage real comedy, not lazy bigotry.
@@chalkandcheese1868 I mean actual comedy with jokes, structure, timing, something well written not just someone saying 'I think this about this minority' and the audience claps along like a bunch of seals because they forgot they paid to see a comedy show and not the live version of an opinion column from a newspaper. Comedy is an art form, it's not just a series of opinions laid out on stage independent of form or narrative structure. Comedy is clever juxtapositions, it's wit, it's experience moulded into an elaborate skit. It is not 'I think this about black people snort chuckle'. If all that makes you laugh is someone's negative opinion of a group of people then that's probably less to do with an appreciation of comedy and much more to do with being so insecure you need to hear someone mock other people less fortunate than you so you can feel better about your situation. It's the pits
@@lloroshastar6347You have no right to tell people what “real comedy” is. It’s always subjective until it touches on a topic that you don’t like. If there are a bunch of minorities that can laugh at jokes directed towards minorities, then the issue is not the comedy, it’s the people who have an issue with the comedy.
@@GOJIGANG So if someone laughs at another person being tortured is that 'real comedy'? If someone laughs at the suffering of others is that 'real comedy'? I have every right to dismiss bullying and harassment from the definition of 'comedy'. Just because someone laughs at it doesn't make it comedy, it makes the person laughing a sadist.
@@GOJIGANG Nobody ever engages with the actual comment. You're not acknowledging the fact that people made racism, homophobia and misogyny effectively extinct on the comedy circuit in the UK because most people didn't find it remotely funny and people were genuinely being harmed as a result. It didn't do anything other than embolden bigots, that's why it was pushed off the comedy scene and replaced with jokes with actual structure, jokes that give people something to laugh at. That's what happened, they said for years that women weren't funny, then women were given a platform and shock horror people did find women funny. They said the same about black people, disabled people, gay people, anyone who wasn't a white cis-het middle aged man they said wasn't funny, and reality proved them wrong. It was because of the kind of on stage bullying that led to that oppressive environment. I don't care about the 'freedom' for the oppressors to oppress, to normalise bigotry and hatred, regardless of whether or not someone finds it funny, it alienates more people that it amuses. So yes, I absolutely will say that isn't comedy, 100%, I'm not going to lie to you to protect your feelings and pretend that being hateful and bigoted is real comedy, because it never was.

How can you agree with any argument that makes no attempt to understand the opposite side?? Thank you for your empathy.
Part of what gets to me about Chappelle, aside from everything you said here, is that I feel like he is smarter and more talented than his material lately. It's frustrating AF to hear any intelligent person say such stupid things, and to know they are only saying those things to appeal to an ignorant audience. At the end of the day, IMO, insult comedy is just the most watered down, pointless, laziest comedy, and I think Chappelle is better than that. It's like he decided to stop trying. It's very sad to see.
The problem with trans jokes is that 1. Its the same 5 jokes over and over again. 2. Its a safe group to make fun of cause they don't posess any actual power to ruin a persons career/life. 3. To paraphrase george carlin on andrew dice clay, " maybe he should understand that many of those who hate trans people probably have black people also on that list"
Edgy comedy prides itself on saying what people won’t say because it’s controversial or feared, but because conservatism literally means the preservation of older systems and ideas, you can’t really turn a conservative stance into an edgy joke because it isn’t novel. It’s not on the edge of anything.
"I'm looking forward to reading the comments on this video." That is one courageous woman right there. I'm scared to read these comments and I'm not even in the video!
Transphobia, like other interconnected forms of bigotry, is just brain rot. Choosing to "go there" in comedy also seems to be creative brain rot. I really liked what you said about how we're treated as "unfaithful narrators". It's so prevalent. It's like what the entire modern anti-trans shit is all about, though it's so prevalent as a general micro aggression across the board, and one that's acutely dangerous.
As someone who worked in men and women's prisons, those who are nonbinary or trans are under their sex assigned at birth. There is a trans woman inmate in Massachusetts who has been getting the state to treat her gender dysphoria and to be transfered to a female prison. The system right now is deeply unequal and downright dangerous for these inmates. However, too many people will not care because they're "bad" people and dishonest campaigning from the TERs who want to hide their bigotry under "concern" for cis women prisoners. Talking about trans people and actually listening to trans people are like night and day and it's high time the latter starts happening more.
What chaps my whole ass on these conversations is that these same transphobes don't even care, one bit, about the actual conditions of prisons. The crumbling buildings, the too hot or cold, the issues during Covid, the rape and impregnation of cis women prisoners plus rapes in general, the wrongfully convicted, etc., etc., etc. And on top of that, the joke from Dave seemed to be "ha ha ha, women's prisons are easier so I wanna find some way to go there..." I think prison jokes for me fall flat due to the fact that we have decided to not humanize prisoners and to not pay adequate attention to the issues that continue to plague prisons. Like, a joke here and there can be funny, sure, but eventually using prisoners as a punchline shows no real creativity.
I'm someone here who is trying to understand allyuh's viewpoints and to expand my horizons. What exactly do you guys want the state to do about those that are trans in prisons? I do not want to say that they do not deserve healthcare, all innmates should get it because often times its deteriorating health that leads them down a certain path in the first place, but what do you think should be the solution or certain course of action that should be taken?
@@MorenaDeRenaI mean you said it, they like all inmates should have healthcare. They should receive the appropriate medications (in this case HRT for gender dysphoria). I’m not sure what you’re asking beyond that

I'm reminded of Bill Hicks who in his later comedy routines would sometimes go on long spaced out kinda druggy diatribes...and then would notice he was losing the audience and poke fun at himself or the subject. To the point where he had a bit where he became increasingly intense about crappy white Christian music until he was howling, growling and snarling into the mic...and finished with "...I am available for children's parties, by the way..."
I think he was self medicating for his cancer by that point. :/ Hicks was up there with having philosophical comedy but kept it entertwined (from "The door is a jar" to "[sic] take all of your music and burn it") much like how Carlin could with political and social commentary (railing about the destruction of the planet via consumerism then talking about how "dogs have eyebrows"). Robin Williams could do the same, but many don't remember his stand-up these days which is a shame. (His impressions maybe, but not actual sets.) Thanks for mentioning Hicks. It seems like (with the exception of Carlin - and that's mostly because of the weird attempt of the right to "claim" him) no one really mentions comedians who haven't released or tweeted something in the past five minutes.

I'm not a comedian so I'm not trying to explain what is funny or why, but I agree, it doesn't seem like Dave's humor is about breaking things down anymore. Going beneath the surface and exposing the absurdity at the heart of different subjects. If someone is trying to joke about a subject they don't know or understand, I guess the humor is always going to be limited to their ignorance.

I am more intentionally trying to have fun with the content I produce on this channel. If I can’t do a silly intro, I don’t wanna do it. That’s kinda how I’m moving forward. Thanks for noticing ❤️
Ladyballers seems to be a less funny version of the Special Olympics episode of South Park. The comedy comes from Cartman assuming as someone without a disability he'd have an obvious advantage, forgetting that he's not an athlete and out of shape, and his competitors actually trained for their sports.
I'm a trans woman, I went to a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class after being invited. I had mentioned that I feel nervous because I don't know how cis women feel playing sports against me So she went and asked if they would be okay for me coming free for one class and after some convincing I went. I didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell, not only were the women I sparred against infinitely more skilled than me, I genuinely didn't have the mass they did. Even in the sports that I used to play, I don't compare as a casual athlete who is trans against a serious athlete who's cis. I know my experience isn't indicative of everyone's, I am not every trans woman, but the idea that I am a threat to the woman who used one hand to grab me by the wrist and throw me over her shoulder is an absolute joke.
"Conservative comedy is just getting on a stage, stating your political views in a silly voice, and expecting applause." Holy shit. That is the most succinct way I've ever heard it put and it's *so accurate.* Well-said, Kat.
The fact that Ben wanted to prove how easily men can be in the women's league by making a documentary about it but found out they can't just do that easily, and that they have to take hormones for years in order to qualify literally destroys their entire logic. An offensive joke can be funny but conservative comedy is just garbage.

I live somewhere that is considered pretty good in terms of gender affirming care (Ontario, Canada). I still had to wait almost a whole year to see an endocrinologist for HRT.
That’s crazy. I am not trans, but I too am from Ontario (GTA specifically) and I have adrenal hyperplasia, and had to wait a long time to see an endocrinologist as an adult as well. I can only imagine it takes even longer for trans people to get referrals.
My wrong-o-meter has buzzed on Dave for decades. His show was always a little too funny to white frat boys in the 00’s for my comfort. He reduced Rick James, one of our best and brightest, into a punchline. After the Jan. 6th insurrection, he hosted SNL, and a friend of mine said, “Ohmigod. Chappelle’s gonna let Trump have it.” And I thought for a second and said, “Mmm. No he won’t. Watch.” And I wanted to be wrong, but lo and behold, he tried a joke about respecting the audacity, was met with silence, then quickly changed the subject. He never actually speaks real truth to real power. Even the Lewinsky joke you showed talked about lowering taxes. He got boo’d for bringing Elon Musk on stage. He went to hang with Kanye West, well after the White Lives Matter shirts and Trump meetings. He ran to be Bill Maher’s “black friend” after Maher’d dropped the N-bomb on his show, ostensibly in the name of free speech. His Jussie Smollett jokes were too vicious. And now he’s a TERF. Now? A review of his show, in the 00’s had a headline that read, “You don’t have to be a racist to love The Chappelle Show… but it helps.” Everything he says I’ve weighed against the thought, “Is this going to make anyone rich, powerful, white, and male comfortable or uncomfortable?” And the answer’s always “no cages have been rattled”. He may have quit to break his contract and ostensibly look inward, but there’s a thread running through all his work before and after that grand gesture. I wish he’d just come out and be Candace Owens, and maybe I’d trust him - but he’s doing it with jokes and whistles and secret handshakes. I don’t trust him.
Thank you for this comment. Definitely thought-provoking for me. I liked his comedy before this era of weird anti-trans jokes. But I think what you're saying rings so true. I liked his comedy before, but I remember being disturbed about his joke that women who dress as hos, should expect to get treated as hos (like if he was dressed as a cop, then he was going to expect to get treated as a cop). And now, that I read through those incidents you cite in your comment, I realize, oh, he's always been a dick. But at least before, he was funny. Kat is right, now, he's just a hack.
I think I could sum up your beautiful comment in a single sentence: Dave Chappelle was, is, and always will be a snake in the grass, and more people need to wake up to that fact before more people get hurt.

There have been a few comments about trans women in prison so I’ll expand on my thoughts here:
Many of you have mentioned Demi Minor, a trans woman who was housed in a women prison who impregnated two women in the facility.
This article has a pretty comprehensive look at it: theappeal.org/new-jersey-transgender-prisoner-policy-demi-minor/
My point still stands, cis men don’t go to women’s prison because they say they’re women.
And in that, I agree.
it's so interesting to me how often "grow thicker skin" translates to "let me bully you, stop fighting back or making me feel bad about it".

Did he? I thought he was given the title.
The same argument could apply to music too, especially for Drake and Madonna...
This is why i love Terry Pratchett, if anything his takes got better as he wrote.

That's how these comedy specials feel to me
Sweeden is overwhelmingly white and islamaphobic AF.
Huh.
Same with mexican depiction on movies and tv shows
My problem with "offensive" comedy is just that it's far too easy.

It's always ironic when people like that don't seem to realize that they're part of why sensitivity seminars are needed.
Hell, all humans are tribal. Talk to any football fan. Indigenous tribes say “We’re actually related” while casual tribes say “You and I both live within a hundred miles of where this particular sports team regularly plays.” The former makes perfect sense. The latter not so much.

Especially if those groups sit at intersections of oppression like black womxn, Asian Americans, working class BIPOC communities, fat queer people etc…
Given that Netflix is paying him millions of dollars to do these specials I’m convinced that loads of people are actively engaging with his transphobia.
The Venn diagram of transphobia and misogyny is just a circle.
"They offend everyone equally" is one of those bullshit points that first assumes everyone starts on equal footing.
Yeah. They playfully roast themselves, then repeat bigoted talking points about a minority and pretend it's a joke.
You nailed it
Do you have evidence for your statement?
That... makes no sense.

Part of what gets to me about Chappelle, aside from everything you said here, is that I feel like he is smarter and more talented than his material lately. It's frustrating AF to hear any intelligent person say such stupid things, and to know they are only saying those things to appeal to an ignorant audience.
I’m sure being an animator and artist has also helped give you a thick skin too
Haha this is true
@@MorenaDeRena To treat them as human. That's what we want.
@@lordtette well i was asking about a more systematic approach. The expectation or want for individuals to be treated humanely in theory is a given.
@@MorenaDeRenaI mean you said it, they like all inmates should have healthcare. They should receive the appropriate medications (in this case HRT for gender dysphoria). I’m not sure what you’re asking beyond that
as a stage manager, i would love to tell dave to wrap it up
"I could not survive in this world without having thick skin." This is the truth. It's a damn shame that spending a lifetime being a black man in America doesn't translate to empathy for Dave. Seems like a waste of a lot of potential.
The Dreamer is so self-aggrandizing, and he acts and walks like he is a literal god and it’s just not inviting.
I am one of those people who want to learn about everyone and their differences. I appreciate you sharing your opinions and feelings it helps put things in perspective and I appreciate that!!!
Thanks for always doing such great videos!
Bill Hicks, the Noam Chomsky with dick jokes. Man, talk about about a comedian who could speak truth to power. R.I.P.
I think he was self medicating for his cancer by that point. :/
Hicks was up there with having philosophical comedy but kept it entertwined (from "The door is a jar" to "[sic] take all of your music and burn it") much like how Carlin could with political and social commentary (railing about the destruction of the planet via consumerism then talking about how "dogs have eyebrows").
Robin Williams could do the same, but many don't remember his stand-up these days which is a shame. (His impressions maybe, but not actual sets.)
Thanks for mentioning Hicks. It seems like (with the exception of Carlin - and that's mostly because of the weird attempt of the right to "claim" him) no one really mentions comedians who haven't released or tweeted something in the past five minutes.
Later shows? He was dead at 33.
@@jamespohl-md2eq Yes, later. If something is scheduled for 3:00, but doesn't occur until 4:00 - that would be later, yes?
Or, as another example a performer adds something to their routine after they have been doing it a different way for quite a while. That would mean that version is being performed after the beginning of their career - they added it *later.*
Also - he was 32. Try having even *one* part of your comment be accurate before trying to "correct" people; it just makes you look ridiculous.
(Also, a touch of compassion for the man wouldn't have hurt either. It wasn't an easy death.)
@@searchingfororion32 or 33. It’s a distinction without difference.
The best part is you pretending that you were watching his career and can differentiate. Jfc.
Omg Kat x gianmarco the crossover I didn’t know I needed
I'm not a comedian so I'm not trying to explain what is funny or why, but I agree, it doesn't seem like Dave's humor is about breaking things down anymore. Going beneath the surface and exposing the absurdity at the heart of different subjects. If someone is trying to joke about a subject they don't know or understand, I guess the humor is always going to be limited to their ignorance.
Good trans jokes should be able to make trans people laugh too.
Great point
I'm glad I was able to be there for my cousin when he started his transition in middle school. No one should feel completely alone through the hardest parts of their lives. He's the greatest man I've ever known and has helped me see just how important social transition is for transgender youth. Great video Kat!
I think it was pretty clear he just lost touch with non-hollywood people when he brought Elon musk on stage and expected his audience not to boo
Big bad white man
This reminds me of why I think "don't get high on your own supply" is a general life lesson.
i’ve been following you for so long and it’s so nice to see this spark you have in this video
i can’t explain it tho, it just feels like you had fun
"Conservative comedy is just getting on a stage, stating your political views in a silly voice, and expecting applause."
Holy shit. That is the most succinct way I've ever heard it put and it's *so accurate.* Well-said, Kat.
Hearing commentary from another black trans person is refreshing. Thank you for being alive
The fact that Ben wanted to prove how easily men can be in the women's league by making a documentary about it but found out they can't just do that easily, and that they have to take hormones for years in order to qualify literally destroys their entire logic. An offensive joke can be funny but conservative comedy is just garbage.
The fact he's made a point of repeating and leaning into the anti-trans rhetoric definitely makes it seem like he's lacking new material. Him simping for Elon Musk just made it worse; can't watch him anymore 😔
Him becoming an Elon simp is baffling to me lol
@@KatBlaque From what I had read, Dave platforming Elon Musk at that SF show was supposedly done so that Dave could get his longtime pal Talib Kweli unbanned off Twitter. And Kweli was originally banned for harassing women.
I genuinely feel sorry for the struggle you’ve gone through to get to the point you’re at now but I’m happy you have. You’re a bright light in this world and for the people that actually care about others you’re a star. Speaking for myself I appreciate you and your thoughtful commentary on everything, I hope that your upwards wave continues 1,000,000 fold
This video deserves so much credit and I appreciate you for making it. Unrelated to Dave Chapelle, I’m just sick of people saying offensive things and calling it comedy.
Once a comedian starts to punch down instead of up it’s time to retire, your best days are over.
Once somebody gets offended by a stand-up comedian it's over, and you probably never had any best days.
@@chalkandcheese1868damn, maybe watch the videos critiquing him instead of being a mouthpiece for a man who doesn’t care about you or know you exist.
I do actually think the "white guy" voice he does in that special is one of the funniest and most memorable things about it for me, as a white person
Can I just say, your candle layout in the background is so satisfying. Love the color palette going on 😍
Oh thank you!
I got your back Kat 🤙🏻. I had to recognize that the Onus is on me to acquire the knowledge and understanding of Trans people that is needed.
I live in NY City, and what I lack in my ability to meet Trans people out in public.
I have awesome people like Jessie Gender, Dead Domain and yourself, etc, to provide that much needed perspective.
The worst hacks of the last decade have all fallen into the "wah the woke mob won't let me call you a f***** anymore, I'm being cancelled while simultaneously making money hand over fist on major platforms. Also I have no jokes "
I had to screenshot this comment. Too good!
Thank you Kat for another great video ❤ and as a long time (and disappointed) Chappelle fan, Killing them softly is def his best one imo
Wait, Dave thinks trans people are privileged? Damn, I didn't realize he was that out of touch with reality.
What’s the only group you can’t question or joke about without being labeled a trans phobic
@@notamurderer6226Trans people are more likely to be victims of violence and bullying, but I’m sure the fact that they are defended by twitter people totally makes up for that.

I recently watched "The Rules Of Comedy: What Can't Comedians Say?" by James Woodall and it's honestly one of the best video essays I've seen on comedy and offense. I fully recommend it.
Ooh sounds neat! Thanks I'm adding it to my list 👍
For me, it’s not that Dave Chappelle’s jokes aren’t what they used to be, it’s that he’s not even cancelled. You can’t claim to be a victim of cancel culture when you’re in the middle of winning a grammy
Damn, this video is powerful AF. Thank you so much, not only for the breakdown, but also for sharing your story and perspective on this ongoing conversation.
The Kay Blaque x Downside crossover was unexpected but definitely welcomed! 😂 Love both of y'all!
I always enjoyed his standup but couldn’t keep up with his show. I haven’t seen the most recent special but one or two ago I felt “oh no… I think he’s been rich for too long.” His facial impression of his wife was cringe inducing and stuck in my craw.
Great analysis. This is the first video I have seen by you, but with this kind of fair and honest analysis, I am looking forward to seeing more.
hahahah not the white ally, that was funny !! 💀
