There have been a few comments about trans women in prison so I’ll expand on my thoughts here:
Many of you have mentioned Demi Minor, a trans woman who was housed in a women prison who impregnated two women in the facility. Different states have different laws when it comes to this, but there are some things about this case that should be understood.
These pregnancies aren’t a result of rape, but of a consensual sexual relationships she had with these women. However, all instances of intimacy between inmates is seen as violative by law. Obviously plenty of inmates have relationships so they only really end up weaponizing this when they need to.
Additionally, they rolled back rulings that would allow trans women to be placed in women’s prison because of this case and even before then, it was not common for trans women to be placed in women’s prisons and it’s certainly not something that has ever happened because a man decided, right after judgement, that he identified as a woman. Demi Minor was transferred to a men’s prison where she would later attempt to mutilate herself as a way of decreasing the harassment from the men she was now housed with.
This article has a pretty comprehensive look at it: theappeal.org/new-jersey-transgender-prisoner-policy-demi-minor/
My point still stands, cis men don’t go to women’s prison because they say they’re women. The very rare times trans women are sent to women’s prison has occurred when they are already well into their transition.

So a biological man inserts his biological male member into biological female inmates and it's assumed it's consensual and also that it's okay even if it is? People aren't supposed to be having children in prison like this. For years pretty much everyone but prison-fetishists were on the same page about this. What makes this okay now?

Hi, I'm just now watching your video and was about to comment about this.
I truly love and appreciate you as a smart insightful cultural commentator but I don't think your point "still stands" ... up to scrutiny.
Your point in the video claims the joke lands for people based on a false base of knowledge.
The reality that there are people aware that women have gotten pregnant by trans women in jail is not a false basis of knowledge for that particular joke.
The debate that can never be settled is this: Are some jokes offensive bc they're unfunny or are they unfunny bc they're offensive?
The greatest Dave Chappelle joke is probably the one that ends with a baby selling w**d to support his children.
In order for that joke to really land, there's so many offensive stereotypes about the black community one would have as a basis of knowledge.
Offense and humor are subjective, but I'm left unsure why the mention of certain groups trigger such a collective reaction.
      Thanks.

@@100Percent_Zeero If I am to just butt in I think it depends who is saying it. Because if you make an offensive joke about yourself, then that becomes self depreciation humor. You more likely know the limits of a joke and an actual understanding of stereotypes and how they aren't true or understanding how they develop.
The problem is that sometimes a joke in the cultural climate is too far.
Okay imagine an actual trans person repeating dave chapelles joke.
"at least if i go to prison i get to be with women".
Like see how creepy that is and how it is confirming the prejudice that these "offensive comedians" are pushing.
Thats not to say there arent funny trans jokes, there are plenty and you kind of actually need a trans or trans supportive person to actually present them since its not coming from a place of full malicious intent. Just because dave chapelle can make jokes about black people doesen't mean every joke is open for him to use, he isn't going to be taking jokes straight from 1920s or 1860s race propaganda unless used incredibly ironically.
At the end of the day it really just depends if your jokes have malicious intent or not and to what degree. Because malicious intent can be avoided in offensive comedy by either acknowledging the conditions that creates stereotypes/negative aspects or by self deprecation. And of course it still needs to be written and preformed well.

@@josjos-x5s I'm glad you did "butt in" bc this is perhaps the first time I've learned and grown from a reply.
I still maintain my position on the matter but I think it's better to view this as: supportive vs unsupportive, rather than Ally vs Anti.
This overlaps with a broader issue I perceive: as a Gen-X, I believe Millennials have collectively rejected empathy for all persons regardless of beliefs.
It wasn't intentional- it is the result of mass adoption of the internet.
      We mistake communication for character.
Ultimately, I presume neutrality on the part of the artist (and people in general).
I don't see Chappelle as supportive or unsupportive. My base of knowledge is neither incorrect or unsupportive. But if one were to bring that baggage or interpret one's art as an indication of their character, then that is precisely the mode of thought these comedians are battling.
      And in that, I agree.

A similar phenomenon happens to certain authors after a time. If they've already written several bestsellers, the publisher and editors tend to back off and give them free rein, out of an unwillingness to interfere with a formula for success. This is when the authors assume they can do no wrong, therefore they get lazy and all their bad habits come out. Their books become lengthy and tedious, their prose becomes more bloated, their characters devolve into types, and their messages and themes become bastardized. You know they know better, because their later work doesn't live up to the standard of their earlier works when they were still trying to prove themselves. This is precisely how they end up jumping the shark.

But I remember feeling like Brazil itself was being targeted/neglected, since I thought all other countries' depictions were always spot-on. The problem is, that neglect bothered me a lot back then, because it made me fear misrepresentation of my country, with all its cultural and environmental richness; I was, however, not questioning whether the representation of other countries was accurate. My problem with "offensive" comedy is just that it's far too easy. People who make "offensive comedy" make it seem like "this is gonna be so offensive! Nobody else is being offensive, but I'm going to say the things that everyone else is afraid to, because I'm the only person tough enough to make these jokes!" But making a joke at someone's expense is actually literally the first joke a kid comes up with. Like "you look funny" isn't intelligent, it isn't funny, it's the lowest hanging fruit imaginable. It's much harder to make a funny joke about someone that doesn't offend them. Like it's not some kind of badge or a skill or talent to laugh at someone, but it IS significantly harder to make that person laugh with you. Anyone can be offensive; it's immature child humor, but to tell an actually funny joke about someone that doesn't offend them is impressive. And don't even get me started on Roseanne's special.... It was like watching someone's creepy grandma trying to tell someone else's jokes, and then fumbling every set up, every punchline, and then pausing for cheering, NOT LAUGHTER, cheering and clapping. It was very bleak

I remember my old workplace had a sensitivity seminar regarding indigenous people and someone kept arguing how jokes against indigenous people shouldn’t be taken seriously and “we should be able to laugh at ourselves” while also taking personal offence to how statues of colonizers and slave owners were being taken down in America. We can take a joke when you’re actually clever and not just “haha indigenous people are tribal, trans people are creepy, women are sexual objects”. Dave Chapelle isn’t being rewarded for “being funny” because the trans jokes weren’t that good, he’s being rewarded for reinvigorating transphobia.

I'm an AFAB non-binary person, and I've always found Chappelle's comedy pretty derogatory toward women. It's just that for some reason, as a society, we expect women to laugh at and go along with misogyny in a way we don't expect from other groups. We falsely ascribe so much biological, determinative reality to gender. We're primed to think that when someone makes a misogynistic joke, it reflects some reality about women and you're just being a bad sport if you don't laugh.
So, it wasn't surprising at all when Chapelle turned out to be a transphobe, because bigotry is usually not isolated to one group. People who hate women are going to hate trans people too. It's just part of the mindset. At least people are acknowledging the problem now.

    • @Reed5016
      @Reed5016 Год назад +153

That’s a very nuanced way of explaining it. Another thing to add, is a lot of right-wingers tend to only care about an issue if it’s personal to them. For example: if they have a close relationship to their lesbian sister, they might be more sympathetic towards lesbians. But simultaneously, might be really bigoted towards queer men and trans people. I’ve known a lot of people who only cared about an issue if it impacts them or someone they love.
At the end of the day, this is why empathy and solidarity is important. Just because an issue doesn’t impact you, doesn’t mean you should leave the people it does impact to the wolves. Because in the end, when the wolves come for you, nobody will be left to help you fight them off.

(Disclaimer I am saying this as an cis womxn) I definitely agree with your premise that under a patriarchy womxn & AFAB people are excepted to go along with misogynistic jokes. I can’t even remember what Chappelle’s joke about Bobby Brown was (and I don’t care about him to check) I just remember that’s why I didn’t find him funny. Because at the time it felt he was contributing to the pile on that was happening to Whitney Houston.
And that to me is the crux of it- under a Eurocentric patriarchy if you’re making jokes about marginalised groups you’ll get away with it. Especially if those groups sit at intersections of oppression like black womxn, Asian Americans, working class BIPOC communities, fat queer people etc…
Given that Netflix is paying him millions of dollars to do these specials I’m convinced that loads of people are actively engaging with his transphobia. They only continue to hire him because he’s getting views. His content also becomes a vehicle for other transmisogynists to write reactive pieces about him being ‘cancelled’ where they make transmisogynistic bad faith arguments in an attempt to further marginalise transwomxn.
And he’s not even as funny as he used to be. I love stand up. I watch a lot of it. There are certain comedians whose outlook I don’t agree with but I watch because they putting in the work required to be funny and entertain the audience.

In the UK in the 60s and 70s especially, what would be considered 'anti-woke' comedy now but back then was just racist, misogynistic and homophobic comedy was very mainstream.
People got so sick of it being absolutely everywhere that there was a major movement that challenged it called alternative comedy. It got a huge backlash from the mainstream media and politicians initially, but it also resonated with people more and ended up overtaking the mainstream eventually as capitalists realised you could get more viewing figures by not exclusively pandering to bigots.
Now the mainstream media is in a stranglehold from Conservatives and the far-right and they are trying to re-write the narrative by claiming 'anti-woke' comedy is made up of these poor victimised comedians who have been unfairly derided by the 'overly sensitive elites' AKA the vast majority of people. Personally I think we should stick it to these right-wing elites and encourage real comedy, not lazy bigotry.

Comedy is an art form, it's not just a series of opinions laid out on stage independent of form or narrative structure. Comedy is clever juxtapositions, it's wit, it's experience moulded into an elaborate skit. It is not 'I think this about black people snort chuckle'.
If all that makes you laugh is someone's negative opinion of a group of people then that's probably less to do with an appreciation of comedy and much more to do with being so insecure you need to hear someone mock other people less fortunate than you so you can feel better about your situation. You're not acknowledging the fact that people made racism, homophobia and misogyny effectively extinct on the comedy circuit in the UK because most people didn't find it remotely funny and people were genuinely being harmed as a result. It didn't do anything other than embolden bigots, that's why it was pushed off the comedy scene and replaced with jokes with actual structure, jokes that give people something to laugh at. That's what happened, they said for years that women weren't funny, then women were given a platform and shock horror people did find women funny. They said the same about black people, disabled people, gay people, anyone who wasn't a white cis-het middle aged man they said wasn't funny, and reality proved them wrong. It was because of the kind of on stage bullying that led to that oppressive environment. I don't care about the 'freedom' for the oppressors to oppress, to normalise bigotry and hatred, regardless of whether or not someone finds it funny, it alienates more people that it amuses. So yes, I absolutely will say that isn't comedy, 100%, I'm not going to lie to you to protect your feelings and pretend that being hateful and bigoted is real comedy, because it never was.

The system right now is deeply unequal and downright dangerous for these inmates. However, too many people will not care because they're "bad" people and dishonest campaigning from the TERs who want to hide their bigotry under "concern" for cis women prisoners. I think prison jokes for me fall flat due to the fact that we have decided to not humanize prisoners and to not pay adequate attention to the issues that continue to plague prisons. My wrong-o-meter has buzzed on Dave for decades. His show was always a little too funny to white frat boys in the 00’s for my comfort. He reduced Rick James, one of our best and brightest, into a punchline. After the Jan. 6th insurrection, he hosted SNL, and a friend of mine said, “Ohmigod. Chappelle’s gonna let Trump have it.” And I thought for a second and said, “Mmm. No he won’t. Watch.” And I wanted to be wrong, but lo and behold, he tried a joke about respecting the audacity, was met with silence, then quickly changed the subject. He never actually speaks real truth to real power. Even the Lewinsky joke you showed talked about lowering taxes. He got boo’d for bringing Elon Musk on stage. He went to hang with Kanye West, well after the White Lives Matter shirts and Trump meetings. He ran to be Bill Maher’s “black friend” after Maher’d dropped the N-bomb on his show, ostensibly in the name of free speech. His Jussie Smollett jokes were too vicious. And now he’s a TERF. Now?
A review of his show, in the 00’s had a headline that read, “You don’t have to be a racist to love The Chappelle Show… but it helps.” Everything he says I’ve weighed against the thought, “Is this going to make anyone rich, powerful, white, and male comfortable or uncomfortable?” And the answer’s always “no cages have been rattled”. He may have quit to break his contract and ostensibly look inward, but there’s a thread running through all his work before and after that grand gesture. I wish he’d just come out and be Candace Owens, and maybe I’d trust him - but he’s doing it with jokes and whistles and secret handshakes. I don’t trust him.

And now, that I read through those incidents you cite in your comment, I realize, oh, he's always been a dick. But at least before, he was funny. Kat is right, now, he's just a hack.

I think I could sum up your beautiful comment in a single sentence: Dave Chappelle was, is, and always will be a snake in the grass, and more people need to wake up to that fact before more people get hurt.

Thank you Kat for another great video ❤ and as a long time (and disappointed) Chappelle fan, Killing them softly is def his best one imo

Wait, Dave thinks trans people are privileged? Damn, I didn't realize he was that out of touch with reality.

I recently watched "The Rules Of Comedy: What Can't Comedians Say?" by James Woodall and it's honestly one of the best video essays I've seen on comedy and offense. I fully recommend it.

For me, it’s not that Dave Chappelle’s jokes aren’t what they used to be, it’s that he’s not even cancelled. You can’t claim to be a victim of cancel culture when you’re in the middle of winning a grammy

I always enjoyed his standup but couldn’t keep up with his show. I haven’t seen the most recent special but one or two ago I felt “oh no… I think he’s been rich for too long.” His facial impression of his wife was cringe inducing and stuck in my craw.
