Still have a few hundred. Just bought a new laptop and even though my old one still worked great it had Win 7 pro on it, so it wasn't really secure online in my opinion and couldn't get any security updates. Anyway thanks for the video. I used to work on old tower computers, easy peasy but had never opened a laptop. Just pulled my hard drive and the dvd drive. Thanks. Got the hard drive case in the mail and waiting on the dvd case. I didn't trust the ridiculous short videos I had seen until I saw yours. Really I can't say thank you enough. So my next act is try and install my old MS Office 2007. Wish me luck.
Update: Thanks again. The old dvd player works great in it's new external case, and was able to load my MS Office 7. My old hard drive also awesome as external storage.
If the DVD case costs as much or even more then external DVD drive I don't see the point to buy it and reuse the old DVD drive. But it's nice to know that it's possible.
Usually on side dvd drive is found. If you follow midfle of drive to middle of laptop. Only one screw holds drive in. Use paper clip open drive . Use it to open and pull drive out. That is all you need to tear down.. I fix pc's for living.
actually you dont even have to go through all that trouble or expense. Remove the CD/DVD/ W/RW and get a mini SATA to USB 3 adapter and you are good to go. No need to remove the face plate, no need to spend up for a fancy case. I mean afterall how often does anyone use the device these days - on the rare occasion that I cant find a digital download of a movie or music i might have to buy a CD/DVD to rip and convert....
Thanks, I'd just bought an external DVD drive on Amazon but I realized I've got so many old laptops sitting around that there must be a way to reuse one of their drives for cheaper! I think instead of buying an enclosure I'll just get a USB cord that'll plug into that weird looking SATA(?) connection and then I'll find a way to mount the drive inside of a laptop stand I'm 3D printing.
I recycle lap tops as a side hustle and I’m 13 so I’m still a kid and this is a good way for me to make a few bucks thanks Because IT room down take your order as motherboard screens ram etc.
You may also need to get an enclosure with a twin usb cable setup. Sometimes the single cable does not supply enough power to the drive for it to work properly.

I’m having trouble with my laptop disc drive reading a particular cd. I have a CD copy of “The Very Best Of Christopher Cross” (a recent reissue, as the original was on Warner Brothers/Rhino, the new one is Rhino/Warner Records), and it’ll just sit there and attempt to read the disc, but never does. (No mention of being Copy Protected, as it’s a US release.) Any idea why it’s only this cd that happens with?
Most new full tower PC cases are ditching 5 inch bays. Dont toss your old optical bay drives. Use them as an external drive with sata to sata1 direct connection to the motherboard. Ugly, but effective direct sata to sata1 connection
There are many other DVD cases on Amazon (and elsewhere) for about six dollars and up. There are always sales on them, too. Just make sure to get the size that fits your drive.
Can this method be used on a desktop 9mm optical drive whereby I put a 2.5 HDD inside the caddy then back into the desktop? Good content! New subscriber.
My Super Combo drive does not seem to work any more due to moments where I banged the iMac monitor for stuck CDs or discs. I thought of uding this trick but why not just buy a new unit. I cannot play no discs. The unit justs ejects everything. Your thoughts. Thank you.
I thought it was gonna be easy, so just looked it up to see if someone made a better way to do this and yes, it was as easy as it seemed xD your process was close to one I had planned, except some small differences like you using a paper clip (While I was using a phone pick for sim cards) and the only major one being you buying a pre made frame while I'm planning to 3D print mine (itll look like a larger floppy disc :3) and hook it up to a transicion cable

Since I made this video, prices have come down. You can get an entire drive for under $30. They used to be far more expensive. I'd just buy an external DVD drive.

Sure--as long as yours is a CD-RW and not a CD-ROM! That is why I salvaged my old drive from an obsolete laptop. I want to record music, lots of it! Also cheaper than buying an external drive since you already have one.
I bought the exact same generic enclosure you show on the vid under the brand Deepfox. Mine lasted less than 6 months and I only got to use it twice ¦[
It might be possible to splice the usb port adapter and switch it over to a USB micro or USB-C depending on your model, but I cannot say for sure if it would work. Haven't done it myself so I can't say for certain, but if it works I would totally do it for myself too
"Take out every screw you find" isn't necessarily that easy. OTOH, there will be a specific video somewhere on RUclips showing you exactly how to disassemble your laptop.

Just plug & play! You may need to find a driver, but my computer just recognized it.

So all you need is SATA to USB cable.
The housing comes with a usb cable. The housing has an interface of some type, minor electronics, but spears to be bore that just a transition cable
