Teaching Webcam Music Lessons with Skype and MusicReader

- Webcams are great tools for teaching music lessons over the internet, but most teachers and students have been limited to what they can see through the camera itself. Pianist Hugh Sung shows how easy it is to add views and annotations of sheet music into the webcam video stream using Skype and MusicReader.
Hugh gives an overview of hardware and software requirements for webcam lessons, then goes over adjusting Skype's audio and video settings, and using its "screen sharing" feature to show views of digital sheet music from MusicReader.

This is such incredible new technology!!
In all seriousness, skype had only had video capability for about a year at this point, so this video was impressively on it
Excellent. I'm considering moving to online lessons after 25 years of in person teaching. Thanks for breaking it down.
I'm about to start teaching guitar online after 10 years of teaching locally. Excited for the next step! Hardest thing was trying to setup multiple audio inputs on my end but I've managed to get it so that the student can hear my guitar, my voice and any other audio such as Spotify and I can mix all this in my DAW before it gets to Skype. Should make the lessons much better for the student.
Thanks for this. Just what I was looking for. Clear and concise. I'm subscribing!
Our school is just starting to do internet lessons, thank you for this video it has been very helpfull.
Dear Hugh, thank you very much for this amazing tutorial, it is the wave of the future as technology gets better and cheaper. Your contributions (in all respects) are always appreciated.
Best Regards,
Ary

very good info, thanks
Hugh
Thank you so much for this demonstration. I have done a few Skype lessons. When there was a prediction for a pandemic I thought be able to use Skype for lessons would be a good idea.
I have a Mac computer, I have Skype, and I have a very good Logitech web cam.
I did not know about MusicReader but I will check that out.
Again thank you for sharing - it was VERY helpful.
watching this now because of coronavirus
@@mobongo4246 me too, but having problems because of noise cancellation in Skype, can't figure out how to remove it.
@@rerausquin91 Have you tried Zoom instead of Skype? - works well for online lessons and easy to adjust the mic settings.
@@peternewman9214 yes i finally did! It's much better, and I'm already giving my classes with it. Thank you very much for the support! :)
Great vid. Thanks for posting!
great stuff.
Wow, this is an OLD video, hahaha! Glad to see that it's still relevant and helpful!
thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this! Are there updates now, 10 years later? There must be newer programs now.
We learned alot from your video and really appreciate the effort. However, now Skype has changed and there isn't even a tool section anymore. Do you have an updated version for the new revised Skype? Any tips?
Hugh, great video!. I have a question, how do you manage to have to webcams working at the same time on Skype?. Perhaps I missed something. Thanks a lot.
Sounds great! What webcam possibilities do you recommend for your online teaching setup? Thanks!
Hi Hugh, there is no tool drop down menu in the current Skype program and I can't see where to uncheck the automatic audio and speaker settings in preferences of the new version. Do you know? We've learned alot from your video so thank you.
I use Power Music
Skype has builtin noise cancellation for any mic its setup, it cut off the music when I played, how to disable noise cancellation on mic? I tried but there is no way I can do it, checked online , many users has the same problem on audio , please help.
Change to Zoom instead of Skype...
good stuff : )
Great video!
Do you're student's have to pay for music reader? Do you pay or use a free version? Can the student also make notes on the music pdfs that you then see in real time? It is worth it when there are other white boarding websites out there that are free?
Thanks! Fred Hallas
I'm curious about this question as well!
does MusicReader also have tab?
reminds me of extra terra's video: ruclips.net/video/lMj-iyAoh30/видео.html
the problem is that you can't see the student's finger's motion.
Due to coronavirus??
Hahaha, I must be able to predict the future ;) This was recorded over 10 years ago!!
boy can sharing music be any more impersonal ? ... binary world for dollars ..
