Parts of the video were off camera, which made it hard to follow what you were doing. This is the kind of stuff that most people need to see a step-by-step guide. If you don't want to speak what you're doing while changing the motherboards, perhaps, you can add text on each step. The video doesn't need to be so fast, especially when doing a delicate and complex "transplant surgery'. Anyway, thank you for sharing and posting.
This has more to do with data recovery than repair. Most ppl give up or pay a heavy price for data recovery. Problem is that even WD itself has many models and chips and power sources often won't align
hello, great video but sadly it didn't work for me to exchange the chipboard/controller taken from another identical WD passport ultra. once I exchanged the controller and plugged the hard drive in my computer, it started ticking loudly. I was really concerned as I feared that I had irreversibly damaged and lost the data from the other drive from which I borrowed the controller!! I then found other videos on youtube saying that an exchange of controller/chipboard use to work on older hard drives but that recently hard drives even with very close serial numbers or from the same factory can be slightly different and therefore cannot be exchanged. indeed, I noticed tiny differences on the chipboard... different country of manufacture to start with, and lots of tiny other things when one looks really very closely. I'm not saying one can't do it, if you could do it, maybe you were lucky that the controller was the exact same, so pobably worth trying. sadly, it wasn't my case, even though I bought those 2 WD passport HDs at the same time. what else can be done now? how would a data recovery professional deal with my drive if exchanging the controller doesn't work? can the same controller be bought online? thanks for your response :-)
A professional would probably recover your data a different way. He would remove your disks from the system and hard-copy them, retrieving every file that isn't entirely corrupted/broken. Basically, he wouldn't need any circuit, but I would send everything to the company, as they have so many options and tools, you never know if they will need it.
HELPPPP!! my WD passport for mac had a password set for my mine and not when I plug it in it brings up the unlocked which I then have to double click and it prompts me to enter my password then it unlocks But it won't open to let me enter my password what can I do? And it has alot of my important staff
could i use the board from an old laptop 150gb HD, swap it with the 3tb my passport drive's board to give me the sata connection instead of just usb, then use the my passport as an internal. this videos makes it looks like the boards are interchangeable
Hard to believed, I am recomended; not to follow this instruction, otherwise both of your HDD will stuck and getting worse. Each board of HDD have data saved regarding MBR, boot sector and many mechanism data that each HDD have different data. You just only replaced the board , since power up new mechanism data will saved and mismatch, guarantee both HDD will not work.
you're right, I did this mistake, I swapped the circuit boards that didn't work then I reversed the procedure, whoa!! I can't access data from my donor drive also.
@@hexnos swap the board is normal in DR, I did successful in many years , follow these steps: 1. Make sure board problem NOT drive problem. 2. Get donor hdd, donor must = pattient in : brand, model, date of mfg (similar), most important is donor f/w = pattient f/w. 3. Swap pattient EEPROM IC to donor pattient. This soldering work, do it properly. 4. Now the board ready to swap, after board swapped copy/clone your pattient hdd data to good hdd ASAP. Pattient hdd can broken anytime and no more chance to recover your data. Ignore one of above = failed
hi good day can i ask a question my wd 1tb my passport just cannot be detected anymore.. i did almost everything trying to fix it but no luck.. just want to ask.. in your video u said 2.5" wd standard.. can i buy a new wd blue 1tb and replace its board (using the board of my wd 1tb) and making it my new working portable hdd?
It's electromagnetic shielding to prevent errors during the high speeds that USB 3 can achieve. Without it, or if it's compromised, then the drive may need to slow down the data transfer during corrections and transfer re-requests.
I thought this was going to be a repair video...not you swapping a new hard drive into the external casing...this wont help anyone looking to recover their data
It looks pretty much straight forward. A repair tech at Bestbuy told me i'd have to send it out to get fixed, costing around $600.00. The part is only $50.00. I'm not gonna pay some Putz $550.00 to do something that only takes a few minutes to do. I can easily do this fix myself. Just one question. Do those extra connector pins serve any purpose?
pc my wd had a clicking nosie then beeping wont spin i was dropped a couple times it light up but dont show up in my laptop would this bring my folders back i have a lot of music please help
Power issue could come from the circuit board, so it might not work, this only works if your drive is physically damaged and no data will be recovered.
nicely done my friend, I'm having the click of death sound on this almost same type of HDD, if I replace it with a new one exactly as u did, will I still have my data on there???
My HDD was working fine, and then suddenly one day it just wouldnt read in my system and its having a small clicking sound, some say its due to the needle thread needs to be reset back in place.
pls help me, I replaced the circut board with another board just like u did, but when I go to disk management it shows offline and it wont go online, I tried everything but my hdd is not showing or functioning properly, pls help, i just want my data off.
I have the same problem - won't read on my laptop and annoying clicking sound. I want to keep the data for sure. Please share if anyone knows how to fix this. Thanks in advance
Hi, I have WD ELEMENTS SE 1TB drive, its usb adapter in motherboard is broken, can i swap another motherboard from new WD ELEMENTS SE 1TB drive ? even if its same model will the motherboard work ? are there any encryption stuff like that ?
+PC.com one last question. is the manufacturer firmware stored on the "green part" one of my diagnosis said I had a firmware corruption so I want to know by replacing this PCB will it the read on my computer then. If you dont know its fine. :-) youve already been great help
+PC.com okay, thanks! I was just trying to make sure I wouldn't loose any of my data/files if I was going to replace the green part in order to get my hard drive to read. I'm a hands-on female but not good with exploring electronics.... :-)
+PC.com probably i have not explain myself well. how you detect wich tipe of problem makes the hard disk not to work properly. si son las agujas, la placa trasera, si los discos internos estan mal, etc... (write in spanish cuz i don't know de right words to say it).
is there a problem if i replace the broken hard drive with a bigger capacity one? for example my WD My Passport is 500gb. Can i replace it with a 1ΤΒ WD 2.5" drive?
PC.com that's fucking AWESOME! my dude, you just saved me a butt-load of money. Can you believe BestBuy wanted me to pay over 1500 for data recovery?? thank you so much bro
HI, I dropped an external hard drive WD elements 500gb, and now the laptop doesn't doesn't read it, my question is can i just change the disc to a new hard drive? thanks
I have the same hard drive and I dropped it but it's still spinning and the white light is on, but it's not connecting to my computer would this fix myProblem
Yeah I just ordered the 2.5 hdd same as you so I'm gonna see what happens I've had the drive for years and it would make sense to replace the hdd right, after I dropped it the fan just sounds s little different, but I should still have all my data right?

Hi. I have a HDD (my passport) but i can't do anything with it ( format, see space, open it) nothing is working when I plug it to my PC all that happen is my PC will not respond
only problem with this video, you did not show that it worked. and i dont think it did. you have to swap pcb boards from wd to sata with a compatible board number. which you did not show or even talk about...
My My Passport failed (Input/Output error), and I couldn't do anything about it such as either reuse the hard drive itself (if the controller is faulty) or put in a new 2.5" drive inside (if the controller is good but the drive itself is bad). Lesson learned - NEVER buy another WD My Passport!!!
If repaired external hard drive, can with Wondershare Data Recovery to deep scan your external hard drive try to retrieve your data back. em... I am serious.
Obviously, it's not working. I can't tell what you're doing half the time and other commenters below mine asked the same question. Silent movies went out of vogue 100 years ago when we learned how to record sound and speech.

awesome, you repaired the hard drive by replacing it with another complete hard drive. Next time my car need repair, I will just replace it :)

he didn't switch the hard drive. He switched the controller!

no. it wasn't

Question. Is the Tin Foil necessary? I ripped it off the "good" drive without thinking it was necessary.
it's bette with... but
It's electromagnetic shielding to prevent errors during the high speeds that USB 3 can achieve. Without it, or if it's compromised, then the drive may need to slow down the data transfer during corrections and transfer re-requests.
Mine didn't even come with the foil.
1 question, what screwdriver u use to open the Harddrive PCB?

спасибо за видео, так и думал, что будет проблематично поставить в ноутбук
Can you recommend a 2tb WD hard drive to replace the 2tb one in my WD passport? I want to make sure I get one that will work.
it must be a same one

should solve
hope so, i dont mind buying another external
