These early show in 96 remind me of Metallica 83 when they had to prove something again.. I love these shows
yeah, everyone was disappointed with the new album, however, whatever your opinion of the album, you should admit that the guys had a blast at the concerts
Fade to Black during this era was absolutely incredible. On Cunning Stunts (1997) this song is my favorite performance of the set.
The tempo, the tone, everything was amazing
RIP Lars left leg, 1985-2000
+TheM0nsterLives Relived in 2010
Yeah I wish he would go back to controlling the hi hat instead of letting it rip wide open all the time.
Give him a break he’s getting older
one of the best versions of this song... maybe even the best! Long life Jaymz! Metallica 4Ever
\m/
wow this comment is 13 years old
My god man, I still totally love the silver sparkle drumkit after all these years.
one of the best fade to blacks
two things determine whether this song sounds great live - the speed that they play it in - sometimes lars rush this song way too much. Another is how motivated James is at singing it, rather than just yelling and screaming which he has the tendency of doing
totally agree bro. The comment and the other 2 things.
this is a good ass version
1985 is best
Absolutely agree
This is my fav fade to black era, which is on the load tour...cunning stunts version is amazing!!
James' voice at 2:08 is chilling it's that good.
I've been searching for almost 20 years for this. As others have said, this was on PBS's On Tour years ago. The joy and nostalgia I'm experiencing right now!
Yep, ditto. One of the first live videos that really stuck with me, and now I know why. This was a really solid performance, and the audio mix was on point.
Oddly enough, on the same broadcast, Ozzy played a song and Robert Trujillo was playing bass.
james voice is so awesome in 1996, really awesome shows~
James vocals worn out in mid 1992 and in that era he had struggling already in his voice
@@reysonhingada4366 yes it faded away in but he used it again in 96 very well but he didnt use more after (just a bit in some live in 2003)
at the 80's and 90's james sweared a lot, screamed a lot of times, kirk ran the whole stage, lars joke around a lot of times, do drums solos, now it's way more simpler, but it's still good
This and the vh1 awards 2000 are the best performances of Fade there are.
Insane that they picked back up after their worn-out stage between 1993 and 1995. A mere 2 years before sounding once amazing again
Simply nothing more to giveeeaaah
I like that sound
Hammet is a beast on the guitar !
This live version of fade sounds better than the studio one...!
Agree with ya
No honestly Kirk's performance makes it just decent
Jeremy huh
Laying into the wah like that flattens the top end and ruins it for me.
@@TacticsTechniquesandProcedures True, I was focusing on the rythmic part.
I miss Newsted so much. Metallica isn't the same without him.
Jason newsted was the best bring back jason
Love Jason
Rob Trujillo is aswome
No shit
God bless you
Yes, I sooo Agree 👍 He was such a golden asset they had with him, & I just hope They have or will realize it, but too late, They lost him, & it was all just ego issues between Hetfield, & Lars, But Jason said in one of his recent interview that he would jam with Lars alone, he don't want no part of James anymore, Can't & Don't Blame Jason 4 Leaving, That was Eft up how he treated him, Now I can see why I've seen pics of Young James with a Black Eye!!! 😆 🤣 Sometimes some folks won't tolerate his don't give a shit mentality, I'm glad St least Lars & Jason are buddy's now, 👌
Middle solo ends with one of the best improvisation of kirk hammett.
Very great voice he had back then
I hope they release a load/reload box deluxe and play more songs of that era live!
I was there. My god.... what a show
Can't believe I've never seen this version. Love the tempo. Some live versions they play it too fast.
Best live of Fade to Black
@Fred Tedason sad but true is heavier when its slower imo
Now a days they are doing it alot better these days, your comment was 3 years ago so I don’t know about th at era but rn kirk with that green lespaul sheesh I’m hoping you agree with me
Wow james voice was amazing in this era, the way he played around with notes...interesting !
so much passion.................
DUDE! I've searched for this for years! I saw this on PBS back when I was a kid and it was the first time I EVER saw Metallica play. I had it on a shitty VHS tape and watched it over and over for forever but I lost it. This performance of "Fade" is just incredible. Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Captain jack sparrow on lead guitar ladies and gentlemen
Wow, this is an awesome version. James' voice is amazing.
What an era
ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF ALL TIME
...But it's Sheamus from WWE
This is the last year where James used any kind of grit or rasp in live performances until the Hardwired tour. He didn't lose it after 1996, he just became lazy and started yodeling instead.
Ever heard of 1999?
@@GuitarBoi Yeah, and that's the year where he uses rasp or grit the least, including 2000. What's your point?
@@MikaelLV 1999 is one of his best years.
@@jackbauer1818 I'm talking about a certain vocal technique, not how well he sang.
Yeah 96 had his last punch raspy vocals (in king nothing january 97 he used the last) about february 97 he stopped using this, 2003 he used in St Anger Songs, and then in september 2018 he started using again, you can see in the 2019 lives and his 2018 lives where he is with the badass moustache
My favorite version
Yeah! i used to have this performance on VHS, great to see it again finally!
James Bday! 33 years!
3:55 OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow I never knew Het could sing like this! Fucking beautiful 😍
Awesome!!!
Great version of this song...to me 3 songs that define Metallica , fade to black, creeping death, four horsemen..like I said, in my humble opinion...
Play this at my funeral ⚰️
Absolutely love this this song
2019 ?
Metallica ..........❤
The song I want played at my funeral
So much RAW POWER on stage!!!! I LOVE IT!!
Incredible performance! 🤟
STILL KICKS MAJOR FUCKIN' ASS TODAY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!!! METALLICA FOREVER!!!
I was at this show.
The Lolapalooza' shows were nasty, heavy as f... and furious!
5:16 James \,,/
James's birthday
this video is 14 years old with only 385 subscribers. i learned how to play this song from this video
woow my favourite song!!
Yeah saw this on PBS's "On Tour" years ago and only recorded half of it. Nice to see it up here, a great play of this song even if the video is a little desynced lol
JAMES'İN( TEK AŞKIM, SEVGİLİM ), METALLİCA TARİHİNDE "" ZEUS-CHİMERA "" GİBİ GÖRÜNDÜĞÜ YILLAR 😍😍😘😘
3:56 Yeah!
just..THE BALLAD
The last time lars played this tune awesome
Jason's Bass tone was great when he started to use sadowsky basses. You could hear him in the mix.
best version of Fade to Black!!!
Best fade to black live
Oh my God! it sounds just like seattle!
3:56 YEAAEAEAAEEAAAH
WOW! this vid should have more views...
Still so young at the time!
they were 33 except Kirk he was 34
@@thedancingguy828 its crazy how kirk is the oldest but looks the youngest
@@RandomPerson-ui3xv yes, i think it is the filipino blood
Hetfields vocals vocals are boss on this version
metallica the best!!!
METALLICA!!!!
James birthday, 33 years that year
AMAIZINGGG
metallica have rule allways
though sound is not clear it is fantastic.
2022
Super grupa
This was JUST BEFORE James started yodeling (which came in 1997). THIS should have been Cunning Stunts. Not the weak country version we got the following year. You can see that James was slowly transitioning from the old James (pre-1996) to the new (toned down) James from after.
Danimal300zx i wonder if the yodeling thing was a part in saving his voice. cus he still used the grit but not as often.
yodeling?
James sounds almost like in best part of Black Album era
4:13 wild basist appears
@tuffywallace You got a meet and greet! Bet that was awesome!
Are metallica usiing a 3rd guitarist here by any chance? :O
@tuffywallace You're in for one hell of an awesome night man
i agree with you in a way, but come on dude they were way younger, and actually i saw em back on december and they fucking ROCKED!!!
Супер!
Is this james vocal peak?
this and 1999
No, his vocal peak was 1989. Lots of screaming without trying, real boss back then
@@lucasgugli6698 screaming is easier than singing lol
@@RaaZVan99 Don't get my comment wrong. He wasn't screaming like a mad man, beautiful singing with harder notes when necessary. In the Load era he cracked too much while singing.
@@lucasgugli6698 I don't think it was cracking, I actually think he developed some weird vibrato, I actually loved it
yeah man, that is what I was saying to the other dude, but he got it the wrong way.
@jebbbuz i agree %1000000
was there a fade to black where james jumped in the fya???
Suicide is not my type...
but this riffs...
@BUbbaBIscut
YES! hot!
Wish I had lived 20 years earlier...
Well, Master of Puppet's solo isn't as long. And I've seen him do a little bit of improvising on One. This solo however on Fade to Black is quite long so there's more room to add things in.
Jason looks like the mask from the scream movies with his mouth open, Hetfield and Ulrick looks cool without the long hair, but not really Hammett or Newsted. It'd be cool if they still had long hair but what can ya do.
If they played it the same way every time, it would get boring. For both us and for Kirk. So he tries to make it sound a little different for both of our sakes.
Improvising.
After 4 minutes of video, the fucking camera man turns to Jason Newsted!
Fade to Black = Les Paul Tone
35-36 hows that possible kirk plays the note without hittin the string!!!
Hammer on
Fodaaaaastico
That's bass tho
James had no tattoo
Awesome but the timing is way off
what u mean?
Is this in D tunning?
I think at this point they've been tuning a half step down.
I played along with it at half step down. Its a whole step down..
+Virgil G Nope. It's half step down
keep in mind the album version from the 80s would be tuned higher than a mid 90s performance provably. 80s metal wasn't D or C# or anything
Eb tuning
james still swears at shows.
Aq çok iyi çalıyorlar
I dont know what uve been saying to the other guy buy i just cant stand when they dont swear..im not a fan of just swearing..but metallica needs it--especially in the sad songs
This is the real metallica
Not the shit on this days
?
