Naked chassis in a box! Tubes missing. No CRT. FEW people anywhere in the world could make a color TV out of this pile. That's the sort of drama I love.

Yep, I was also playing with running B/W tube TVs since I was 10, maybe even at 8. Hot chassis, no isolation transformer. And I somehow survived. I only recall a few bigger shocks. Fortunately the models I had all used the same chassis with a single Si diode as half wave rectifier, so the chassis was tied to one pole of the mains, and not to the negative side of the full wave rectified mains. This way if I pugged in the plug the right way, the chassis was on neutral potential. I always done that, and wore well insulated shoes.

Ah Zenith color set. My first girl friends family had one, it was my first time viewing a color set, she invited me over on a Sunday for Sunday dinner with her mom and sister (Dad was in Vietnam) then watching the Wonderful World of Color by Disney. I still get a twitch in that spot where such things activate when thinking of the beautiful little blond girl with an ever so tantalizing body. (No, we never did the dance with 2 backs, but I did it with her older sister a few months later) Man that color, it was amazing, I will never forget the fireworks on the opening...

in vert. Set was vert blinking like yours. Went nuts, I wanted to fix as it was almost NIB. Turned
out when I put the cathode cap in 6" from the can was the reason. Got an OEM can & fixed it.

Years ago, dad ran an electronics lab at one of our local universities and he built a high voltage RF generator for a physics experiment. When demonstrating it, he pointed out where the dangerous part of the circuit was, just then an arc punched a hole in the nail on his index finger and burnt the skin underneath. It comes as no surprise that in his EE course, one of the lecturers had the name R.F. Burns and looked like he was suffering from some.

I loved this video! It's like everything that really happens and more! I remember reading all the service stories in radio TV magazine and this is a thousand times better. I'm impressed at how a flyback and other components dry out while in service. When I worked for the power company we used to pull a vacuum on a transformer to get the moisture out. I wonder if a flyback or other components could be placed in a light vacuum and slightly heated if that might dry them more!

We had a Zenith roundie as our first color set. An uncle died and we ended up with it because we were the closest relative. My dad hated it because it needed a lot of service calls compared to the Zenith B/W set. It would look pretty good for a couple of months until it got so bad you had to get the tech back to adjust/repair something.

CB linear amplifiers didn't run the tubes as sharp-cutoff pentodes; they ran them as cathode-fed, grounded-grid triodes. I was in that business for awhile decades ago. There is a lot I could tell you about it if you want to take the time to talk about it. To answer your question, it's not hard to find old amateur radio literature with grounded-grid sweep tube amp designs where the harmonics were 30 dB below the fundamental prior to output filtering being added. On a scope that's a perfect sine wave. By the middle 70's the larger CB radio amp manufacturers were buying large lots of tubes designed specifically for them directly from GE. The ones I'm familiar with are the 8950 and M-2057. A quick search for "8950 tube" and "M-2057" tube will lead you to data sheets. The dates on those data sheets are 1975 and 1976. By then the CB linear amplifier market was driving power pentode tube production more than television. I'd argue that if there was ever any significant sweep tube surplus it was created by bad orders made by dying CB linear amplifier manufacturers.

We used to break open the TV's from dumpsters and used to pull all the vacuum tubes and dumb friends and I used to throw them at each other. We were aiming for the feet though. Not that that makes much of a difference. We must have busted hundreds and hundreds of vacuum tubes. Ah! Stupid old days.

I haven't watched network television in at least a year and haven't missed it at all. All the shows are reality crap or talking head fake news anymore. Investigative journalism died with the Obama administration when he allowed propaganda back on TV. Can't have the legitimacy of one's citizenship and eligibility for office questioned by the media. What we have now is "make it up as you go along" journalism. Make up fake stories about your political rivals on Monday, milk the headlines all week, then quietly redact the story Friday evening and by Monday everyone has moved on but only remember the headlines from the previous week.

Sharp cutoff actually means the tube is linear. As opposed to remote cutoff which has the control grid wound with varying pitch so the cutoff is less sharp, which allows for gain control, but makes the tube more non-linear.

I wonder if dipping tube pins in a wax / grease prior to storage, would halt corrosion or oxidation of the pins, and preventing leaked and going to air ? Just a thought.

25:40 "If these wires touch any of your test..." for a moment I thought he was gonna say testicles. I bet you could kiss them goodbye too when that happens.

Dang, I would have imagined you’d have a large collection of germanium diodes, likely Russian. Because of you I ordered a large collection of Russian germanium diodes and transistors, about 500 diodes in total and a 1000 transistors in total, of course a huge array of different devices.

Sounds like the bad fluorescent tube starter audio effect in 1982 Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (and many other worse movies). Brass decreases induction (aluminum cores are also used for the same purpose in old HF trasmitters), and ferrite increases it. Many of the people repairing/restoring radios use a self-made tuning tool consisting of a plastic tube, often from an emptied ball pen or versatile pencils with a brass core stuck in one end and a ferrite core in the other end (ex. soviets in particular while retuning old OIRT FM to the western CCIR standard band).
