  • John and Steve discuss the loss of Allman Brothers’ guitar great Dickey Betts. Betts died at his home near Sarasota, Fla., of cancer and Chronic Obatructive Pulmonary Disease, a respiratory disorder. Betts was one of the founding members of The Allman Brothers Band, who were known for the twin-guitar interplay between Betts and Duane Allman. They were one of the biggest live acts of the 1970s. Betts was 80. #vinylcommunity

Thank you for your remembrances of Dickey Betts. The Allman Brothers for me is the ultimate comfort. Nothing soothes my soul like Dickey and/or Greg Allman's voices. I am truly saddened to know he's left the earth. I did get to hear the Allman Betts Band last summer, featuring Duane Betts and Devon Allman. Roy Orbison's son played on one of the two drum kits. I'd love to hear Derek Trucks join them on one or two tracks. What a joy to know this generation is carrying on their dads' music. Duane Betts learned the iconic guitar style of his dad. Like I said, a real joy! RIP Dickey Betts.

I think Dickey wrote the best rock instrumentals of all time! Elizabeth Reed, Les Bres, Jessica, Duanes Tune...Oh my God such beautiful melodies. Plus the other tracks he wrote, too numerous to mention...Plus the fact he played guitar like no one else...not even Duane. RIP Dickey...love ya man!

I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. You touched on it but I'll add to what you said. After the death of Duane and Barry the band was crumbling. Everyone was an emotional wreck. The personalities were such that stepping up to a leadership role was foreign to Gregg, Butch, Jamo and it was Dickie that took the bull by the horns and refused to allow the band to die. He willed them to carry on and create what I consider their masterpiece, Brothers and Sisters. And even though that strong will ruffled feathers and would lead to a parting of ways in later years, the band would never have gone on 40+ years had that not happened. May he rest in peace.

I started listening to ABB again about 3-4 years ago. The first time I heard Revival after decades, it sounded corny to me, but now, in the light of Dickey's passing and the era when it was written, it seemed to me that its a perfect match for the flower power, free love hippie era. Iconic in its say. (As for Ramblin' Man, I heard he envisioned that for Johnny Cash). ABB was an awesome sextet and viewing some youtube performance, I think Dickey stacks up with any top tier Les Paul player, even if he isnt' widely recognized with players like Jimmy Page or Paul Kossoff, etc. And his songwriting again is amongst the best ever
