Laying hems, meat chickens, hogs, and a cow or 2. Greenhouse, hydroponics ways to grow vegs year round. Generally enough for 3 families. On 12 acres with flowing river on property+ great well water. Good luck all stay safe all.

I agree in theory about the hotwire, however we were doing this back in the 70's. Not so much to be all natural free range because it's the craze, but because it was just the way it was done on smaller farms with 50 head or less. The key to it working past the first jolt and go is to make sure the first jolt has a little bit of jewel behind it. Most of you out here use smaller kits, The problem with that is you dont take into consideration pigs are smarter than you think, curious, precocious and cantankerous. They get bigger an can handle a lot more bump...so start with the max bump....make it really hurt. Next is the maintenance, keep the grass cover from touching. Gonna have to own a gas weed whacker or have a seriously long cord. Anyway, just 2 cents worth from someone who has done all this long before you were born. Great vid and good advice and I can see your learning quickly as you go. Welcome to the few, the proud and the fed.

I have been here 9 years now and it is a little slow going trying to get everything set up ! I have 2 horses and 2 dogs . I had some chickens but I had ended up in the hospital and no one was able to get out to my farm to let the chickens out of the coop . It was early that I went by ambulance to the hospital . It was about 10:30pm that someone got out there . All of my chickens and 1 duck was dead because that day it got 113 degrees in the shade . They was locked up in the coop . Now I have trying get everything set up better ! Everyone please take care and stay safe out there !

When I was in FFA and raising hogs as a project... I had a Duroc x Hampshire sow. She'd raise all kinds of hell come feeding time (I lived in town kept her on the school farm). Everyone including my FFA advisor was scared of her, but I could let her out of her pen and she'd follow me around like Abe follows you.

brtidwell55 I don't know the different types of pigs bc I raised (150 ct) broilers with (12) brown and Rhode Island whites as egg laying hens and (75) turkeys when I was 12 and 13. I won 1st at Falls County in TX 1980. So as adult, I helped my Ex start a 4H club in another small town in TX. He's put our boys to 4H which kinda started FFA class at the High school too. Our boys showed Yorkshires I think was the type.
The other day I watched another video where the hosts studied Durok, Berkshire and Kuni Kuni. They gave the math of giving (2) pigs 2andhalf pounds of feed per day for 10 months will put these pigs at about 250 to 350# each at the slaughter house. I've thought I'd get 4 pigs to start so I will have enough food to feed my extended family. Quite a few relatives are disabled, and I don't want to see them going into state care. It's not a lot more work for 4 pigs as much as 2 are, if I can get a boar too? Even better! I'd rather have too much food, than not enough. My question is where do I access the info on types of pigs?

I recently received 3 little pot bellied pigs, from a lady at the feed store. Got them home and they were so scared of me, they would cower in the corner. I put a marshmallow on the end of a twig and held it in front of them. After the first one ate it, they all wanted a marshmallow.
It was amazing. 1 tiny marshmallow each and I am their best buddy. Thanks for the tip. They are sooo cute.

    Nice setup.
I use the two wire setup for my pigs running through the woods. Fiberglass posts and white poly string with a number of stainless steel wires in it. First time I set that up I had a GOS piglet get out in a low spot where it was able to get under the wire. Fortunate we were able to get it contained quickly with a feed bucket, but that pig was fast. Easily could have gone in just a few moments. Since then, we upgraded the fence charger to a much higher power unit, and run the bottom wire closer to ground. No more issues with the pigs escaping. But I would feel much less worried if we had a perimeter fence in case they did get out of the electric again.

    • @nicknitro9170
      @nicknitro9170 2 года назад +1

Almost the same here, 3 wire setup never had an escaped pig after using the 3th line. But if i have to make it again i will go for a permanent fence and just 1 wire to stop rubbing.. just for the peace of mind ..

I enjoy your pigs, they have been very friendly and seem to have good dispositions. My dad raised pigs (and beef cattle), most of the time our pigs were just as gentle as yours appear, just don't forget they are pigs by nature. When they are pregnant or have piglets they will protect those babies from even you and the family. As they age their dispositions could change too. Be sure to caution your girls (and you may have already) so they know. I fell into the mother pigs pen (several mothers and lots of babies) when I was probably Hadley's age and one of those mothers was seriously coming for me when my dad stepped in to the pen and scooped me up. She was very serious about not wanting me there.

I’ve been raising pigs on pasture/woodland for years, I have had hundreds of pigs circulate thru 3 different 3 acre plots over the years on 2 strand fencing and the only thing that ever got out was little piglets that could walk under the bottom wire. They eventually got to big and got a shock or two and they never breached it again. Easy to set up, fairly cheap and easy to make repairs. I’ll never use anything but this set up, great results

I can't imagine using only two strands. I used three and a low encroaching strand (a stand-off of 6"). They not only can, they will get out. Pigs are very intelligent. Whether you know it or not, they are constantly testing the wire.
Grown up grass, dew, and certainly a rain or snow, will ground the fence. And they will be way ahead of you.
I remember like it was last week, coming home from work and seeing 20 hogs running around eating the fresh spring greens, OUTSIDE the pen! Rounding up pigs that are happy where they are is really a pain.
Really enjoyed the video. I have to say it was a hoot.

I just rotate my pigs in the 1 acre goat yards. With, before, or behind my goats. Works really good. I do like your self watering tote idea, I will steal that idea for sure. I also like Kune Kunes, because they do sweet; but I also try and make sure they have plenty of shade and water also. Thanx for the information! Our yards are similar. I try to make my yards one style fits all/most. The fouls have their own yards, but I do put unruly geese in with the goats.
That being said; I'm having to start over, so right now I have only cats... lol

I keep babies and mothers in a penn with walls behind 4 Electric wires. This way the pigglets are stopped while they learn about Electric wires. You can try this teaching metod to see if you are more successfull. Pigs are more intelligent then dogs. Mine love eggs so if the electricity is out for some reason, eggs will bring mine back. I have one acre fences , 5 of them, for my 6 pigs. Then I can rotate and grow veggies in those fences that are not used. I agree shade is important! Mine like to sunbathe though. Very Smart. Try this also. I use to raise pigs. Tap-tap-tap on your feed bucket. That trains them, the sound. Some yell. That way when they get out they will come and follow you . They are great animals. rotate your area. Fertilizer.

I really like the way you teach and interact with your girls. The way you speak to them and thank them for doing chores is awesome. I’m not a fan of pigs at all but you think through how you raise them and seem to do well with them. I’ve lived in town for many years now so I don’t and can’t raise animals. I do live in a rural area though and I buy most of my meat from our local locker.

We had a batch ones , there was no keeping this one in. He wanted to be a dog. He would walk the dirt road with the Collie and get up on the porch with the dogs on a hot summer day lol. The rest stayed in but this one stayed out and got the name " Wilbur"!
That is a nice way of doing it Dutch all's right with the pig raising!
    Good helping Hopey!

I had 1 strand on a wooden fence on 2 sides & field fencing, they didn't like being zapped at all. The boar bulldozed the grass up the fence line, they still knew where it was & wouldn't touch it. 3 pig's in your set up is perfect. For my 400-600 pound pig's that'd be good for them, to root up.

Your daughter guessed the correct answer for the number of eggs (7). Funny you both switched answers once she collected them. My daughters are teenagers. I miss them helping me like yours does. Great parenting!
