06:07 with all due respect to Doris Kearns Goodwin, the failure to prosecute the Confederate leadership after the war (Andrew Johnsons fault, not Lincolns tbc), was a mistake imo that helped bolster the Jim Crow era that came afterward, and still hangs over America to this day with all the "Lost Cause"/ defense of Confederate Statues BS.
I am not sure that prosecuting the leaders of the Confederacy would have made any difference in the Jim Crow era. Most of the leaders of the confederacy were out of power or dead when Jim Crow started building statues and promoting hate crimes.

Doris is brilliant and all, but I wish she didn’t frame the situation as that there is a normal Republican Party operating in todays political environment and expecting both sides to come meet in the middle to hold hands. The last 8 plus years have shown us one political party operating in reality and the other operating at the behest of a wannabe autocrat. The only solution to our collective problem is at the ballot box. She frames the statistic of people only wanting to date/marry others with similar political viewpoints as being potentially problematic. Is it really odd to not want to date someone who supports you losing autonomy over your own body?

Her thoughts and words on this area, on this particular political situation we are in, carry the weight of history and should be heeded and repeated by those who would work to bring the country together. It behooves the President's speech writers to take note and infuse his coming rhetorical opportunities with these warnings to wake up the complacent.

Someone had better inform Trump and the GOP that he is a convict in the legal custody of the state of New York. His rights as a convict are seriously curtailed, even if under confinement at his residence. He will not be free to receive "guests", have interviews, pronouncements, internet access, etc. . The judge in charge of the Trump case will now become the official "gatekeeper".

Yes, you have to feel aggrieved about something that happened in the past, but, after all, Trump was not put on trial for something he is going to do in the future, but something he did in 2016. Those of us who believe that presidential candidates should not be able to break the law in order to get elected applaud the verdict based on evidence that came from the past. It's not like CRT doesn't look at the past 405 years and ask us to learn from it. The question is whether or not we want to learn from the past or go back to it, relive it, treat it like the happy golden days of yore, and make the same mistakes again.
