Was designed to putting my interest in falconry on the back burner , but have made the decision to start. Currently re watching your ( and other vids) reading books and ordering more, have plans for my mews.but taking it slow to get these things done first and accumulate the necessary kit , hopefully be looking to get my first hawk in about a year .
Just wanted to thank you ( and others online like Dave Sharp etc for their time and resources) you are never too old to learn ( even from those younger than yourself)..
    Well done and thank you.

Dan, thank you so very much for your insights, candor and mature attitude towards falconry. I have taken on the charge of training a 2.5 yer old tiercel who is coming along famously. As the president of the Black Hills Raptor Center here in Rapid City, South Dakota USA we are a group dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured and sick raptors, education and research. I am currently at a point where Ike (our tiercel) will fly to the lure on creance and return to his perch consistently and predictably. The thought of free flight weighs heavy on my mind. We have just acquired a telemetry unit that I am working with off bird for the time being. It would be interesting for me (and I suppose others) just how you make the transition from creance to free flight and, with regard to the telemetry, where do you prefer to place the transmitter - tail, leg or harness? Greetings from across the pond in Rapid City, South Dakota. By the way, I am an avid follower and am a subscriber to your channel. Cheers.

Hi, that’s awesome, keep up the good work, I’ll have to have a look for you guys on social media if you have it. I guess you have to just accept when it’s time to go free that there are risks involved, it’s always tricky the first time and I guess I could make a video about it, my main advice at the moment is that make sure you have a routine and the first time you fly him free do not change a thing, just carry on with exactly what you had already been doing for the first few flights until you are more comfortable yourself and you won’t put him off with your own nerves.
And personally I prefer tail mounts but if you can get a backpack on him that will do just as well. Please let me know how you get on with the training!

Great to listen and watch the videos, even though I'd love to own a bird and join the falconry world - I know it's a huge commitment and realistically not something I can fit into life right now. Sooooooo I'll keep watching and reading a book or 2, not the same but keep it up your videos are always a treat!

Great video Dan I’m hoping to get a sponsor and trap my first bird next year (From the USA) in the meantime I’m going to volunteer at 3 different nature center, one of with has otters coyotes and a snowy owl and barn owls another has many different species of hawks and owls and the last one has a little bit of everything (birds mammals reptiles etc.) over the winter I plan to go out several different falconers who fly different birds birds to see how different species are flown. This video gave me some food for thought and I’ll check out those animal training books you mentioned.

But are you a falconer or do you just fly bop at shows

    • @MercerFalconry

You have a choice here, you can either keep questioning me, which I really don’t mind because the more comments I get on videos the more RUclips pushes my videos to people meaning I actually earn more money the more you comment, or you can stop questioning what I do with my private personal life that I don’t show on RUclips, maybe I go out every weekend of the open season to hunt and just don’t show it on RUclips, am I allowed to have some private life that’s not questioned every 5 minutes by you?

@@MercerFalconry you are so right in what you say but I am interested as to the fact that you call yourself mercer falconry that's all well and good if you practice the art but not if you just do displays and so called hawk walks with yout birds
