  • This is a short a video detailing the way I keep my trained kestrels in the house. They stay like this year round, except when weathering on a screened porch after feeding, or when sleeping at night in their carry box (which they prefer).
    There are any number of ways to keep a small falcon indoors, but this way has worked well for me for decades. I have described this and similar systems in my books.

    Hi Matt, we met in January at the Texas Hawking Association’s field meet (I’m the one who gets carsick while car hawking!). I’m replicating this setup as best I can for my own future kestrel. If I may ask, where did you get the leash/swivel? Did you make it yourself? I’m having trouble finding one like it, and I want to make sure I’m using the same kind. Thanks so much!

      I make it myself. But you can get most of the components or a alternative but suitable set up at Mountain State Falconry Supply

    Hello Matt, Thank you for your amazing insights. Would you be open to a phone call from a falconer who is planning to start working with American Kestrels?

    Matt, I noticed you blocked the view out of the window. I assume this is recommended to prevent bating. In general do you always prevent an outside view or is it more dependent on the particular birds behavior.
    Thanks.

      Great question. Probably all birds don’t need that, and even this one likes to look outside when she’s fed and relaxing. But as we get close to hunting time she gets anxious to get out and an open window is an obvious enticement; so the shade is handy.

      I honestly don’t know. You’ll have to check the regs and maybe ask someone in the club. We made sure in Louisiana that indoor housing is kosher

    Can I keep it in my house like this as a “cage” legally?

    • @matthewmullenix3120
      @matthewmullenix3120  11 месяцев назад

      If you mean as a mews or weathering yard, it will depend on your state falconry regs. In Louisiana, tethered birds are allowed indoors, provided it’s a secure location and has all the other requirements for hawk housing.

      @matthewmullenix3120 In in LA . We have a fairly large high ceiling s shed with a clear fiberglass ceiling and wall. The backyard is a sort of bird sanctuary where wild birds come feed with the chickens. If we get a baby falcon will it stay in the yard or fly way off? There are crows in the area.

    Actually, it is an insult as well as a misnomer to call this pretty little falcon a"sparrow hawk ". Actually the true sparrow hawk is an European species that closely resembles the American Sharp shunned hawk in color and markings. 😊

      Thanks for your comment Michael, but I don’t think I refer to her as a sparrowhawk here?
