Struggling 1st Year 1st baseman, trying to replace a Yankee Hero in Tino, huge Grand Slam! Giving up 3 runs in the Top of the 14th, just to score 4 in the Bottom of the 14th!
In 1996, Tino was trying to replace a Yankee Legend in Mattingly & was seriously struggling until his huge HR in Baltimore early in the season! It’s a 1st Base Thing!

This was Bernie's last Bernie like season. Drove in 102 Runs and hit .333. From 2003 and on he dealt with injuries and obviously age started to effect him as well.

I was out with my girlfriend (now my wife) and friends celebrating my Masters. Saw this at a bar. The place went nuts. I don't remember anything after that 🤪🍺

Ill never forget watching baseball tonight and seeing this update. I was with my godfather and went nuts when I saw him hit the grand slam to the point I would reenact it often. I miss old yankee stadium. Also the Yes network tune has been the same for years now lol

The forgotten team. Sucker punched by the Angels. Joe Torre butchered that ALDS.

@@Surfer041 I don't care who was managing, the Angels were the better team, they hit all our pitchers except for Mariano who only pitched 1 inning that series. The Yankees were lucky they didn't get swept. They barely won game 1

@@suleimanp Torre should have sent Mariano for a 6-out save in game 2 when the Yankees had a one run lead, or gotten El Duque out of the game for another reliever when the 8th inning started. El Duque was great in game 2 when he came in in the fourth inning after Pettite got smacked and only pitched three innings.

2002 Yankees is really a "forgotten" team, even with them winning 100+ games that season.
Its like after the Yankees lost in the WS in 2001 after all the support they had due to 9/11, its like the fanbase and the media wanted a break from the Yankees, especially after all the success they have had since like 1994.
Its like the 2002 regular season is forgotten and the 2002 Division Series loss to the Angels was just a whatever moment.
Another reason is that 2002 was a new era of Yankees, where many who were with the Yankees during their success run that won the heart of the fanbase were now gone, either to new teams or retired: Tino, Oneill, Brosius, Knoublack, Cone.
Ill say this: The best thing the happened to the Yankees and their fanbase to wake them up was losing in the Division Series, so they can get a breather and be re-energized for 2003.
But from 2003-2009, the fanbase was back.
To conclude, the 2002 Yankees were going through what the Atlanta fanbase was already going through: Too much winning and postseason success made them boring.

In the middle of the 2000 season, something started to go wrong with the siren and it Continued trough 2002. It worked on and off through the first half of the 2003 season and they didn’t have it again till 07/08 air raid siren.
