I forgot to comment. I really enjoy Anna Knitter vlogmas. She posts a video every Sunday of Advent. She is from Germany and not only does she talk about knitting she talks about German Christmas traditions.
Nice to see you again Amber. Honestly I would not worry about editing or if the images are shown backwards. We like your company and you sharing your knits and experience and we have all of that each time you talk to us. I am also a Drop yarn knitter as it is easier to find in Greece however you can also buy it directly from Drops UK and from what I know the prices are exactly the same from wherever you buy within Europe. I hope will see you again 2021. Have a lovely December from Athens, Greece.
Hello! Thanks for your encouragement! So kind! I ended up tackling my intimidation of editing and have been doing vlogmas! 😆 It's been fun to learn some new things. All the writing is still backwards though! 😆 🤣 😂 Have a wonderful Christmas season!
Thank you for the gift ideas. I like to watch This Wonderful Life, Suburban Stitcher, Nina B, Sew Ray Me, Tales From Cuckooland, The Cozy Knitter, The Gentle Knitter, The Wee Sew n Sew
Hello Amber loved watching your podcast. The jumper you have on is lovely. The fingerless gloves are so nice and the charcoal and white jumper is so beautiful
I love the your hat , the 2 by 2 and I have been knitting a ton for a food pantry and as a donation to this church me a free Thanksgiving dinner. Oh mittens too. Now I have some that I have made for the bus drivers and some for the girls at a medical center that have been so caring. Take care
Always happy when I see you have uploaded. I did take your suggestion when I went to Bar Harbor back in July about the yarn shop. It was super cute and we even bought some candies we had never tried. So thank you for the suggestion 🙂
hi, amber - thanks for showing us your afghan. i didn't remember you showing it before, but i just found that episode, so i'll watch it again, too :). i love your colors! i made the same afghan years ago, but my color choices were absolutely awful. now i can make a pretty one, so thanks! oh, and your christmas yarn - oo ah, so pretty! happy almost christmas! 🎄❄️
Amber, I'm pleased to have found your Vlogmas today. I was a bit startled when you came on the screen because you so closely resemble my cousin who is on the faculty at the University of Georgia in Athens. Amazing. I look forward to enjoying your daily videos during Advent.
Hi Vivian! That is so funny that I look so similar to your cousin! They say that everyone has at least one look alike! Thanks for watching and saying hello!
Hi Arianne! I talked about it in the prior podcast to this one, I think. It's a dollhouse I bought used off of Facebook marketplace, and I'm renovating the inside of it! I've always wanted a dollhouse! :)
Karista is great!! I love her yarns. I may be her #1 fan in Cody...lol I found out about your podcast through her. You are very enjoyable to listen too as is she.
Hi Amber. So glad to watch your podcast. You mentioned issues with contact lenses. My eye doctor gave me a prescription for lenses where the right eye is for distance, the left eye for reading. I don't have double vision, so I don't know if that would work for you. Your brain adjusts to the 2 different strengths of lenses and it works very well. I have had this for many years. My glasses are invisible bifocals and work well with the contacts when I change from one to the other. Thanks for sharing your knitting.
Hi Carol! Yes, he had mentioned something about that, but the bifocal contacts are what he gave me to try and they worked well for near and far sight, just not the double vision. When they ordered my contacts, they didn't order the bifocal ones which is why I've been struggling to see! They called me yesterday that the bifocal ones were in, so I picked them up today after work. Yay! Also, thanks so much for watching!
Are we twins, Amber?!?! Everything you said about crochet, the wonky edges and botched triangular first project as a child, that's me too! And you hit me in the feels about Thanksgiving and why it's your favorite. Exact same for me. Hugs and warm wishes from Kentucky.
Heehee. Maybe that's why I like you so much! 😆 And, yes, I have so many fabulous memories of Thanksgiving dinners on my grandparents' farm. I'm so thankful that I was blessed with that time.
Thanks for another great podcast. I saw some 2 x 2 tubular bind off videos on RUclips. Vlogmas podcasts.. By the lakeside is great. Crazy sock lady, cozy Knitter. I watch lots. Thanks for the ideas for presents. I've made 2 Capucine hats I've got another to make. Pretty quick since it's bulky yarn.
Hi Amber! Love the color of you Felix! I just bought some lettlopi and am going to try to combine the Felix with Bmandarines Tulip cardigan 🧶 We shall see! The Drops air knit up gorgeous in your colorwork! Wow! It looks and sounds very similar to Knit Picks Wonderfluff which I have been trying. Your sweater is going to be so warm and snuggly!
Hey Ellie! I can't wait to see your hybrid sweater!!! I have the Tulip saved in my faves; that would make a great partner to mix with the Felix. I would keep the pretty eyelet in the raglan and then use the Tulip bottom. That would be so pretty. Great idea! And, yes, I think the Wonderfluff is probably very similar although I've never used it.
Hey Amber, Lovely podcast as usual. Thank you for the suggestions for Christmas gifts, I've added a few to my ravelry favorites list. I think you would like the Podcast Stop drop and Knit. She's a natura dyer and is also doing Vlogmas
Ooooh that bird is so cute!! My daughters both have bird names, I think I'm going to knit them their name birds, a raven and a dove, for the Christmas tree
I love all the gift ideas! You've mentioned those Simple House Slippers before, and that's definitely going to make it on my needles sometime. I think my sister would love them. That Norwegian Star hat is just perfect. I've been wanting to do a colorwork hat and it fits the bill. (I just looked through the project pages on rav and your colors are the cutest!) I love making mitts so always appreciate good patterns in that regard. It's fun realizing that I already have made several items that I've learned about from you. I remember several years ago when you made many bluebirds of happiness as ornaments. Now, it seems like every year I go through a phase of making a bunch myself. Such a great little pattern! And I did the Birds and Ships cowl after you showed yours, though I also don't wear mine. I was hoping it would be like a hatdana and wearable in that way, but it just isn't. I'm going to rip it out and reclaim the yarn sometime. Thank you for influencing my fiber life, Amber! Merry Christmas to you in Pennsylvania and Happy Solstice from me in Utah!
yes! You must make those slippers! I want to cast on another pair in some fun, brighter colors. (I always feel the urge to knit with more colorful yarns in the grey days of winter.) Also, I think the Norwegian Star hat is a great colorwork hat! I enjoyed making it! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video, and I appreciate you taking the time to say hello! Enjoy the Solstice!
I am late watching you because of that back surgery of mine…which is over, I am home, am quite miserable, but healing fine so far, and was delighted to finish watching this video. I’m not even sure when I started it, but had several minutes left to go. I got to see your ideas for gifts. It’s hard for me to concentrate on anything right now, but will try out the house slippers and hats at a later time. I’m thrilled that you decided to do a vlogmas! My favorites are not fancy, not edited, but a nice visit from a video friend sharing the day a recipe, a story, or just a chat. Nothing has to be frilly or “fake” , just you…for you..whom I’ve come to enjoy watching. So on I go to a Vlogmas and hope to be able to get Day 1 finished at least. I will be sure to comment. ❤️Cindi
Hi Cindi! Prayers for your healing from your surgery. How long is it supposed to take to recover from it? Also, thank you so much for watching! I am enjoying participating in vlogmas this year!
@@alovelyyarn 12 weeks for the first round of recuperation then 6 months for the second bout. Today is day 10. Thank goodness for pain meds, that’s all I have to say.
I love the colours of your granny square blanket/shawl, it’s beautiful. Laughed when you said you loved the colours after I said it out loud. So beautiful ❤️
Haha. Yeah that cowl is not good for that kind of weather for sure. It is nice to make small knits from time to time because of the satisfaction of finishing something quickly!
Hi Amber, The way you've described your sense of excitement for Ellie's wonderful videos is exactly how I feel about each of your episodes! I've watched them all since you've first begun podcasting several years ago and I just really enjoy seeing all of the beautiful things you're up to
I first saw the bluebird of happiness on your podcast a couple years or 3? ago and loved it. I’ve made so many in different sizes. They are so adorable. Thank you. Love your videos!
An advent swap sounds so nice! I wish I knew someone to do that with. Totally understand not being able to make the purchase after putting it in your basket. Had the same feeling, but it does kinda feel like your missing out without an advent. Mostly because watching vlogmas everyone else does seem to have one (or even more) advents.
Hello! Yes, it does feel that way! LOL. Are you on Instagram? I just put a call out on instagram and asked if anyone would want to do one with me. You could try that next year!
Hi Amber thankyou for your podcast I love watching knitting podcasts with my first cup of coffee. I love your colourwork cowl and had an idea, you could put the looser cast off edge on the bottom when you wear it and the tighter neater edge on the top and voila perfect!
Hi Amanda! Thank you so much, and that's exactly what I was planning on doing. So it's actually good that one side is looser. I just don't like looking at it and seeing it so loose. 😅
Another lovely podcast, Amber! Yes, I’ve knitted the slippers and Norwegian Star hat when you recommended on your previous podcasts! Your Dreama Sweater motivates me but I not good at sweater knitting. Did you have to carry the floats? So far my failed sweater attempts left me two balls of tangled mess I have yet to deal with because I held two fingering double. By the Lakeside and Jaclyn Salem have done vlogmases in years passed. I don’t know if they are doing it this year. Girl Meets Yarn, Marilisa is doing Vlogmas this year. She’s great. She’s a talented knitter, sewer, baker, gardener, etc. Thanks for sharing all those lovely gift ideas! Hope you and your family have an awesome, memorable, and joyous Christmas! ❤️❤️
Hi May! I'm glad you knitted those patterns! They're both great ones! Yes, you do have to carry floats in colorwork knitting. It's easiest for me to manipulate one color with my left hand and one with my right hand because then I can keep the yarn skeins separated - one on my left side and one on my right. When I've worked colorwork with more than two yarns, it does get a bit trickier to keep everything from tangling. Thanks for the suggestions! I've never even heard of Girl Meets Yarn. I'll look her up!
@@alovelyyarn Linda of For the Fun of Knit! Podcast is doing Vlogmas too. I discovered her podcast the spring of this year. I like her podcast too. The Crazy Sock Lady is doing Vlogmas this year!
Always happy to see your podcasts!! All of your knits are so nice. I am grateful for all of your sharing of your knowledge. I love the vlogmas , I am looking forward to them. Have a wonderful month and Merry Christmas to you .
I'm new here and I just have to say I love the jumper you are wearing! I can't stop looking at it. It is beautiful! Thank you for providing me with a new knitting podcast, now I've got to catch up on all your videos! Happy holidays xxx
That was so enjoyable ,Amber!!!!wow,,,,Lots of favorites have been added to my ravelry page!!! Love the colors in UR blanket too,,,,, and all UR makes!! You mentioned you made coaster from UR homespun,,,and I seem to remember them,,,Did u have a pattern? I think I may knit a few from some handspun I was gifted,,,, Thanks so much,,,elaine🏡🏡🏡
Hi Elaine! Thank you so much. I'm glad you found some new patterns to add to your faves. I did not use a pattern. And actually I think the handspun ones were crocheted. Lol. It's been so long since I made them. I may have shared them on one of my first episodes.
@@alovelyyarn thanks for that Amber! I will go back and look,,, Love vlogmas es,,,,and seem to watch alot of British ones,,,back to blighty,,,she just uploaded a pretty vlogmas,,,,Also this wonderful little life,,,ollie and Bella,,,crafty cleggs,,,Knitting on the farm,,,from Ireland,, Sandy by the lakeside,,,in canada,,, Take care,,,See u soon,,Amber,, Ps,love UR socks, too,,,So pretty,,
Hi Amber, some of the vlogmas' I have found are: Girl Meets Yarn, Helen Ketteridge, Crafty Clegg's Creations, & This Little Wonderful Life. Love all your knits and your crochet blanket. I have one like it in a bunch of Noro Silk Garden scraps. I need to try that cowl, love it and all the quick project ideas you mentioned. Thanks and Happy Holidays! 😊💚🎄
Happy holidays! That color by yarn cafe creations is pretty. The references you made were spot on! Huge fan of Charlie Brown! Last Christmas I got the Charlie Brown Christmas jigsaw puzzle! Speaking of advents, when they went past $150, which is costly, I stopped. It's not about the labor, or the art of the dyer....it's about the amount I wish to spend!
Good point about the price of advents. We are mostly a one income family. I work as a barista two days a week, but it's not enough that I feel comfortable with splurging on an advent calendar. I have never seen a Charlie Brown jigsaw puzzle! How fun! We enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles in the winter.
Lovely episode, Amber! I love the bluebird of happiness pattern, too. Your colorwork cowl is really beautiful. I really enjoy colorwork, too. I find it so addictive! Take care, Erika
Amber, we love getting your podcasts. Please don't worry about editing - you are excellent without all that editing. Just be you! We love you the way you are. Without music, fancy photography shots etc. Thanksgiving is also my favorite holiday because of the way my Grandmother and Great Grandmother made it so special and the whole family gathering around to be together, play board games, eat, laugh, etc. There few of us left anymore, but those who remain gather together at my cousin's home and it is a precious time. I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful this year with your family. Now, as far as vlogmas recommendations: last year, I really enjoyed Hawthorne Cottage, Kate, who is from Ireland. But she hasn't been podcasting for about 7 months, so I doubt she will be back at it this year. I am enjoying Martyn, Knitting 365, who is in Cardiff, Wales. I know he is doing it this year, and he is both a knitter and crocheter. I'm also watching on vlogmas "For the Fun of Knit" with Linda in Canada ruclips.net/video/wuRjMHB9ukA/видео.html
My favorite vlogmas is Camijoknit, Camilla lives in Denmark and last year I found her traditions fascinating to watch, very different from my family. I just find her interesting in general, plus she has a beautiful dog Teddy (he's my favorite part). She is a knitwear designer and she has recently started dyeing yarn. I agree with you about doing a Vlogmas, I cannot imagine the amount of effort it takes and all during the holidays. take care
Hi Melanie! Yes! I really enjoy Camilla's youtube channel and actually watched her first vlogmas post this morning. I decided to jump in and try it. I just uploaded day one onto my channel. We'll see how it goes!
I was so glad to see a new Podcast from you! I always enjoy your makes and the thoughtful things you have to say. I have a couple Vlogmas suggestions you might like. One new to me podcaster I recently came across who is doing vlogmas is Back to Blighty. She lives in such a beautiful area of the UK. Also, Nicky Winterton at the Sheep and Cheerful podcast is a fellow believer. She is also a weaver (I'm not sure if she spins). She is also doing Vlogmas. Others I watch have already been mentioned in the other comments. I'm glad you showed the cute Bluebird of Happiness again. I remember when you showed it several years ago and it brought it to mind again so I downloaded the pattern. That would make darling ornaments! Blessings to you and your family this Christmas season! ❤️
Hi Becki! Thanks for the vlogmas recommendations! I'll check them out! And, yes, that little bird pattern is great for ornaments. And they're so adorable! One of my favorite little knits to make. Thank you so much for watching and for your kindness.
I'm so happy that Ashley started dying yarn again! I ended up getting a skein but was too late in grabbing A Merry Little Christmas. There are too many vlogmases to name but I did see Nicole from The Gentle Knitter upload a video and I really hope she continues to vlog throughout December!
I love the Austin sock pattern design! I am going to have to make a pair now. :) I Love Charlie Brown! I have that exact fabric. I bought it hoping to make a project bag. I did vlogmas last year and it about killed me! haha! I'm going to try it again this year. Heres to hoping I make it! lol The hardest part for me is trying to come up with things to film.
So did you find the editing challenging? I don't know why it intimidates me so much! LOL. Most things don't intimidate me as far as trying things out. Maybe it's because I feel pressed for time anymore so I don't want to take the time to learn more things about the editing process.
@@alovelyyarn The editing was fun for the most part (especially adding the music), but it definitely was overwhelming. I forget so easily, so I had to re-learn things over and over again. There were nights were I was up till 2am trying to get it done. There might have been some occasional tears. haha What I wish I did for my first time last year was to do a weekly vlogmas. That would have been a bit easier to do one video a week. :)
So good to see you again! I love your projects. About the bind off of that cowl, i'm to lazy to learn the tubular one, so i always do a regular bind off bit with 2 extra sizes bigger needles. That gives enough stretch and doesn't flares out. It looks actually the same as the cast on. Maybe an easy sollition? Have a great holliday season! Sandra
Loved this vlog, so many great pattern recommendations. And I neeed to get varifocal glasses too. The colourwork cowl looks like the perfect size. Love the colours in your colourwork jumper.
Happy Thanksgiving to you! Thank you for the gift knitting ideas! I really want to knit the bird in blue. A friend collects the glass Blue Bird of Happiness figurines and I think she would love a knitted one.
So glad to see you, Amber!! Did you find a place in the US to buy your Drops yarn from? I love the sweater you're making. You just answered my question and said Wool Warehouse in the UK. I wish the US had it somewhere. I loved seeing all of your makes! I make my own advent yarn calendar...I buy my 20gr minis on sale throughout the year. Have you ever watched Ruth Loves to Knit, Knitting on the Farm, Giddy Knits, Little Drops of Wonderful... to name a few that I love.
Hi Debbie! No, I haven't found a consistent Drops Air US supplier. Sometimes you can find it on Etsy but it's usually a destash or very limited in colors. I love the idea of making my own advent calendar. That would be so much fun, and you probably forget about what a lot of the minis look like by the time you get to advent. I may do that next year, although I have to say that it was really fun to put together a package for Karista. Thank you for the podcast recommendations. The only one that I have watched is Little Drops of Wonderful, and I really enjoy her videos! I think she does vlogmas each year. I'll look up the other ones you mentioned as well.
I highly recommend the This Little Wonderful Life Vlogmas. Ali does an amazing job of editing and I love the glimpses into Christmas in the UK. She also has a regular podcast called Little Drops of Wonderful, full of great knitting and crocheting info. An Advent swap with a friend is a wonderful idea 💕
Love your cowl! Re the stretchy bind off, I do the yo’s as per Jenny’s bind off on the knits & then cast off the purls as normal as you would ‘in pattern’. This gives about half of the usual stretch & the edge isn’t wavy - just level & neat. Hope this helps!
I’m just now watching this so it may be moot. When I want a semi stretchy bind off, I knit the knit stitch then knit the next one and slip them back to the left needle and knit together. Then I purl and Bo the purls without the knitting together. I hope this makes sense. It helps not to get the flair you got. Blessings!
Hi Amber! Happy Thanksgiving!🦃It is so nice to see you, looking so well. You make the sweetest, small knits like the bird, and it inspires me to try new things, as I'm a newish knitter (crocheter all the time.) The pumpkins you showed last month got me to make THREE pumpkins, and I plan to add buttons to 2 of them so they can stack like a tree, but that's quirky me. I love your vlogs! :)
Thank you so much, Kay! I'm so glad you tried the pumpkins. I think staking them is a great idea! That would be a cute idea for the future. I could make them three different sizes and stack them from biggest to smallest. Thanks for the idea!
I really enjoy these podcasts they're so cozy and genuine. Beautiful projects as always! I use glasses as well and I've found that if you put your mask higher up on your nose and kind of put your glasses on top of it they don't fog up. You want to make sure they´re no holes where the air you breathe comes out from the top part of the mask. Maybe it's worth giving it a try (:
Hi Amber! I'm making the Arctic Starflower slippers for my mom this year, I love making slippers for people. These have a beautiful colorwork design on them as well. I hear you on advents-they're so expensive! Probably worth it, but still a lot of money. I've had the same issues with Jenny's Bindoff, the best one is the tubular but it's hard to predict how much yarn you will need! I had to do a quick spit splice halfway through a hem once lol. I hope you are enjoying the holiday season so far! I'm excited to see you decided to do vlogmas!!
Hi Samantha! You have me really intrigued about the arctic starflower slippers. I love colorwork! I'm going to look that pattern up! Thanks for watching!
I’m learning to knit socks and am deciding on what brand and size circular needles to use. What are your circulars? Thanks so much. I really enjoy your channel. Linda
@@alovelyyarn thank you so much. I was looking at those kind online last evening and just wasn’t sure. I have some Chao Goo larger size and enjoy them but so many options I couldn’t decide. You’re so helpful, I very much appreciate you taking the time to help. Linda
Oh, I just found you when this video showed on my recommendations sidebar. So lovely to watch! I also love Ina Knits podcast. Her Vlogmas is nice, and she does the month of Hygge. I love to watch Norwegian podcasts. I've watched Gabby at Plies and Hellhounds (was Once Upon a Corgi) do vlogmas. Usually just following her around dyeing, cooking, playing with the dogs, etc. I had watched Jaclyn Salem vlogmas every year. Very well done, nice edit and music, it's a very New York City Christmas. I haven't been watching her lately as she has gone to mostly sewing, but will see if she's doing vlogmas this year. I do the Bakery Bears 'advent calendar' as I'm a Patron of theirs. (Totally worth the money for theirs, most Patreons I don't find that to be true) By the way, I LOVE the Felix pullover too. Knit one in Barrett Wool Co and immediately started another, a little longer. (I'm like your twin!) Now, I'm off to binge watch your prior episodes....
Hi Jeanne! Yes, I used to watch Jaclyn too and then stopped when she switched over to sewing since I don't really sew! Lol. But I always enjoyed her vlogmas and will watch it this year if she does it because it seems so magical and festive in NYC at Christmas! Thank you so much for watching!
Jeanne, if you enjoy RUclips podcasts from Norway you would love the podcasts by Arne & Carlos here. Perhaps you've heard of them already. Their content centers around knitting, but they also share many other aspects of their life in Norway, including travelogues whenever they venture out. During the summer of 2020, they took us along on their vacation to the Lofoten Islands above the Arctic Circle. They also design patterns for the Rowan yarn company.
You're inspiring me to figure out some last-minute gift knits this year! I wanted to recommend a video by Irina Revo Knitting & Crochet for a tubular bind off in 2x2 rib. She makes it really straight-forward, and I have used it for several sweaters!
Amber I will donate to pay one of your children to edit your vlogmas 😂 I love seeing new episodes from you! I usually just spit splice back to the skein if I run out while doing a tubular bind off, I spent my whole weekend doing nothing but that bind off it feels like! I’m not doing a yarn advent this year either, I just told my husband I’d rather buy a sweaters quantity of yarn and work on that 😉 Leslie from a friend to knit with knit up these scrubbies and I love them and I plan on doing those for gift knits, I also have a dishcloth bag that is full. I hope you and your family have a wonderful advent season, and good on you for being a gracious, laid back mother in law! I have a letter somewhere that I wrote to myself to remind myself to be just that when my time comes because I definitely did not experience that when I first got married 😬
Hey there! Your donation comment is a huge confidence booster for me! Heehee! The tubular bind off does take so long, doesn't it? And I always think about that when I'm about to bind off and then I get tempted to do a different bind off. But I always love how finished the tubular bind off looks. I am curious about the scrubbies. I'll have to look for those. My mother in law asked me to knit or crochet her some dish scrubbies, so I need to find a pattern or a general idea of how to do those. Dishcloths are also a great idea, I totally agree! Actually, my sister has requested some of those! Lol.
Mama Knitter, I decided not to purchase any advent yarn collections, when I saw that I could buy enough Linen Quill yarn by Purl Soho to make a Half+Half Triangles Wrap for less than what most of the advents are costing.
The cowl is very lovely . Under the chin and neck area is the most sensitive and a test spot for any reaction. So the best choice of yarn is a wool under the "itch factor" which is 21 microns. There are over 1000 breeds of sheep and only a few that meet this criterion-- mostly fine Merino and derivatives of Merino like Rambouillet, Cormo and Polworth. So these are the best types of breeds for a yarn next to the skin and especially under the chin. It is also fine enough that it won't be too thick for the 2 color cowl. There are a few others that might work as well like CVM (California Varigated Mutant ) and the undercoat or single coat of Shetland . So it is not the brand but the breed of wool that is important to consider for this kind of project. But try and get a non superwash Merino . Superwash might be easy care because it goes into the washing machine but it is coated in plastic so is basically an expensive synthetic, and does not have the benefits and properties of wool. Of course there are other fine fibers like cashmere, angora, alpaca and kid mohair that will also work as well especially if it can be handspun for this project. But what a great project .
Wow! You really know your stuff, Dianne! :) And this is a great project. The Paton's is a great non superwash yarn that is very economical. The scratchiness of it feels minimal to me, but I think it would be more scratchy to others.
I knit one sock with the yarn in my right hand, and then I knit another sock continental style. The second sock was noticeably bigger than the first sock. So, when I knit socks, I use one style or the other for the pair. When I knit a sweater, I use the continental style, because it is faster. So, I have to adjust my stitch gage accordingly.
Yes, that is what I will do next time. I do like that continental is so much faster. That's really nice when you're knitting round after round of stockinette on a sweater!
For next time: knit a swatch continental to know you gauge so you can knit fast and choose the right size. At least, that would be what I would do... because continental really is so much faster!! (I do knit colorwork with both hands too btw)
I have a little story to share regarding the tubular bind off which might be helpful for some situations like the one with your cowl. Then again, it might not be, but who knows, so here goes. Being a newbie knitter (kind of) and having never knitted a garment, I wanted to see if I could make armhole and neck shaping, and also picking up of stitches, so I was making a simple vest that I made up in some really cheap yarn that I got. While I was working on this I stumbled upon somebody talking about the tubular bind off. I was knitting the front and back of my vest bottom up, so this meant that I was going to have to bind off for the ribbing of the armhole openings and the neckline. I decided, since I'm making this project to learn stuff and this sounds like a nice thing to learn and use, why not try. So I did. The thing is, my ribbing was a 5-stitch repeat that went like (k2, p, k, p) for the round after which I was going to bind off. I watched a video showing the tubular bind off and I cannot say with certainty what I did, but I think that I reached the conclusion than each stitch is worked twice, and for a knit stitch it goes X and Y, and for a purl stitch it goes Y and X - I don't remember exactly but my reasoning was along these lines. And I bound off, working each stitch the way I had decided was appropriate according to the instructions. And it looks nice. The ribbing just ends, no lines, no weird turns. There is some yarn crossing between the two knit stitches that are next to each other, I think, but it isn't something that I find displeasing when I look at it and it certainly doesn't show from a distance. Later, when I had heard somebody else speak about "binding off in pattern", I decided to search for using tubular bind off to bind off in pattern just to see how close I was to what was actually being done. All I could find was "make one row/round of 1 by 1 rib and then..." So, I don't know. I don't know whether what I did is actually a thing. But it looks good to me and in a particular situation like the one you describe, with the yarn already cut, maybe something like my inspired by ignorance approach is worth considering. I must say, I just found your podcast and I really enjoy the way you present your content. Thank you for doing this.
Hahaha. I love your tubular bind off story! That's awesome that it worked out. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to say hello. I really do appreciate it!
So far it hasn't, but my daughter doesn't wear her sweater near as much as I will wear mine. I wear sweaters everyday. I will have a better idea of how it holds up after I finish mine and start wearing it. :)
Thank you for another lovely podcast, Amber! I just started a podcast a few months ago and would love any feedback, if you check it out ☺️ I'm planning on doing vlogmas twice a week 🤞🏻
Thank you for your podcast. I enjoy how grounded and no nonsense you are. For me it's very calming.
Oh thank you so much for that, Dana!
I highly recommend Brooklyn Knitfolks’ vlogmas 😊. I look forward to it every year 🤗.
Oh yes! I've watched hers in the past. She always NYC all jazzed up for Christmas. I love that.
I forgot to comment. I really enjoy Anna Knitter vlogmas. She posts a video every Sunday of Advent. She is from Germany and not only does she talk about knitting she talks about German Christmas traditions.
You aren't the first person to recommend Anna Knitter, so I really need to look her up! Thank you so much!
Wow! Lots of suggestions! Thank you, Cathy!
Hello Amber loved watching your podcast. The jumper you have on is lovely. The fingerless gloves are so nice and the charcoal and white jumper is so beautiful
Thanks so much, Rosemary!
I have double vision as well 🙃 I’m glad you found a solution for your eyes that will help knitting be more enjoyable.
Love your podcast! ❤️
Thank you!
I love the your hat , the 2 by 2 and I have been knitting a ton for a food pantry and as a donation to this church me a free Thanksgiving dinner. Oh mittens too. Now I have some that I have made for the bus drivers and some for the girls at a medical center that have been so caring. Take care
Wow! That is wonderful, Judy!
LOVE, LOVE your Charlie Brown project bag!!!!!
Isn't that cute! I love Charlie Brown!
Very nice podcast. My favorite vlogmas and podcasts are Knitty Natty and Girl meets Yarn .
Thank you so much!
I was so happy to see a new episode from you pop up! 🙏🏼💗
Thank you so much, Sherrie! That's how I feel when I see a new one from you!

Thank you so much for the suggestions!
Little drops of wonderful and crazy sock lady have good vlogmases
Thank you, Patsy! I have watched Little Drops of Wonderful in past years.
I’m really enjoying your podcast, you come across as a friend I’d like to knit with. Merry Christmas!🎁
Well thank you so much for those kind words!
I was so happy to see your video notification pop up. I too love Paton’s Kroy sock yarn. I’d say one of my favorite.
Awww thanks! Yeah, Paton's Kroy is so nice and sturdy. So hardwearing and longlasting.
Always happy when I see you have uploaded.
I did take your suggestion when I went to Bar Harbor back in July about the yarn shop. It was super cute and we even bought some candies we had never tried. So thank you for the suggestion 🙂
So cool! Did you enjoy Bar Harbor? We love it there and hope to get back there next year.
@@alovelyyarn I loved it. Maine is so beautiful. We plan on going back in a year or two. I’d love to see it in the fall.
@@Brinalea1031 It is stunning! We usually go the end of August or beginning of September.
hi, amber - thanks for showing us your afghan. i didn't remember you showing it before, but i just found that episode, so i'll watch it again, too :). i love your colors! i made the same afghan years ago, but my color choices were absolutely awful. now i can make a pretty one, so thanks! oh, and your christmas yarn - oo ah, so pretty! happy almost christmas! 🎄❄️
Hi Jane! Thank you so much! And this is the perfect time of year to make another afghan!
Amber. Really enjoy you podcast. Lovely projects.
Thank you so much, Susan!
Enjoyed what I looked at it….couldn’t stay long .
Thanks Becky!
Английский не знаю.Но работы ваши замечательные .Успехов в вязании и с приближающимся Рождеством !
Thanks for the ornament link, looks like a wonderful gift
You're welcome!
Love your Cowl and you cute gift ideas!!! The sweater you are wearing is beautiful!!! Happy holidays!!
Thank you so much!
Loved this! I want to hear the story behind that awesome dollhouse in the background!
Hi Arianne! I talked about it in the prior podcast to this one, I think. It's a dollhouse I bought used off of Facebook marketplace, and I'm renovating the inside of it! I've always wanted a dollhouse! :)
Love those austin socks. That yarn is amazing.
Isn't it beautiful???
Karista is great!! I love her yarns. I may be her #1 fan in Cody...lol I found out about your podcast through her. You are very enjoyable to listen too as is she.
Yes her yarn is great!!!! So you live in the same area that she does?
Thank you so much for watching!
I love watching Chelsea Luxe vlogmas
Thanks for the recommendation!
Nicky Winterton, Sheep and Cheerful is a great blog. Also Mrs. D, Paula has a good vlog. I’ve never had an advent calendar either.
Thank you for the vlogmas suggestions, Cassandra!
And, yes, I have so many fabulous memories of Thanksgiving dinners on my grandparents' farm.
Thank you, Teresa! I looked that hat pattern up and it looks so cozy and warm!
Amber, I feel that same podcast excitement when yours pop up! Thank you for your time
Thank you so much, Holly. 🤗
You are welcome! Glad you found some you like! Thank you for thr podcast suggestion. I haven't heard of that one!
Thanks for some great gift knit ideas. I am also here in western Pa 👍
Oh hi Sady! Nice to meet another Western PA'er! :)
Ooooh that bird is so cute!! My daughters both have bird names, I think I'm going to knit them their name birds, a raven and a dove, for the Christmas tree
That would be a great idea!
When I saw that you had posted another podcast, I smiled. I truly enjoy all you share. Thank you 😊💓
Awww. So glad to have made you smile! Thank you so much for your encouraging words!
A granny stripe blanket with color changing yarn…why didn’t I think of that, it’s brilliant
Hahaha.
Thank goodness for pain meds, that’s all I have to say.
nice screen with birds in the background! could we see it in full some day? thanks for sharing your updates.
Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching, Diane!
Anna Knitter is doing a weekly vlogmas. Thanks for the gift knitting suggestions. The Christmas yarn you bought is beautiful!
I have never heard of Anna Knitter! I'll look her up!
I shout “yes!” When I see you have posted a podcast! I will check out the others you mentioned as well. Blessed Advent season 💚❤️🤍
Wow Lana! You are a huge confidence booster! Thank you! :)
Love your projects. I am inspired to knit a couple. New subscriber here. 😊
Thank you so much! I'm glad you feel inspired! Have a great day, Shannon!
I love the colours of your granny square blanket/shawl, it’s beautiful. Laughed when you said you loved the colours after I said it out loud. So beautiful ❤️
Haha. Yes, that blanket has all of my fave colors in it!
You got so much done!!
I need to start making small things..
Love the cowl, but it just won't work here in central California, it was 71° today!!!😟
Haha. Yeah that cowl is not good for that kind of weather for sure.
It is nice to make small knits from time to time because of the satisfaction of finishing something quickly!
Hi Amber,
The way you've described your sense of excitement for Ellie's wonderful videos is exactly how I feel about each of your episodes!
I've watched them all since you've first begun podcasting several years ago and I just really enjoy seeing all of the beautiful things you're up to
Awww. Thank you so much, River. That means so much to me, friend.
I first saw the bluebird of happiness on your podcast a couple years or 3? ago and loved it. I’ve made so many in different sizes. They are so adorable. Thank you. Love your videos!
Isn't it a great little project, Kathy? And they are so adorable! Thank you so much!

I'm new here and I just have to say I love the jumper you are wearing! I can't stop looking at it. It is beautiful! Thank you for providing me with a new knitting podcast, now I've got to catch up on all your videos! Happy holidays xxx

I knit dishcloths for my neighbor friends every Christmas, and they love them. Enjoyed seeing your quick knit ideas - may knit some birds. Thank you!
That's such a wonderful act of kindness!
Thank you so much for all of the vlogmas suggestions! I'll have fun looking them all up!
Colorwork is addictive! And thank you so much for watching, Erika!
Exactly so with crocheting…😂 I just wish we could exchange some fabric, I love the Charlie Brown Christmas project bag! 😍
Isn't that bag cute! I actually didn't make it but ordered it from Etsy. I also ordered a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving bag.
Thank you so much, Chelle, for your kind words and encouragement!
Thank you also for the vlogmas recommendations!
I know! I'm also super excited she is dying again! Oh, I didn't know that Nicole does vlogmas. I'll have to keep my eye out for that!
@@bekahjanthevintagedreamer see, that's exactly what I don't want to happen! Being up until really late! Lol. This girl needs her sleep.
@@alovelyyarn Thankfully I'm a night owl! lol But ya, it got pretty grueling. I lost a lot of sleep.
Good to “see” you, Amber! Love the cowl and all the fun gift knitting ideas. Hope you have a great December
Thank you so much, Karista!
Sandra
Oh Sandra! That sounds like a great solution! I am definitely going to give that a try! Thank you so much for the tip!
Loved this vlog, so many great pattern recommendations. And I neeed to get varifocal glasses too. The colourwork cowl looks like the perfect size. Love the colours in your colourwork jumper.
Hi Jenni! Thank you so much for watching and your kind words!
Happy Thanksgiving to you! Thank you for the gift knitting ideas! I really want to knit the bird in blue. A friend collects the glass Blue Bird of Happiness figurines and I think she would love a knitted one.
Thank you! And the little knitted bird would be a great gift for your friend!
Ah yes! I have enjoyed Ali's vlogmas videos in the past years. Thank you!
Oh thanks for that suggestion!
Thank you for this episode! ❤️
There is actually cleaning solution for glasses with anti fog effect! Look it up, if you can, it's life-changing!
Oh thank you!
Hi Julia! Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words. And thanks for the mask tip. I'll have to give it a try.
When you said the slippers knit up really fast, what do you call "really fast"? Any idea of how long it takes to knit them? Thanks Amber.
Haha. I never really keep track of how long things take, but you use a worsted weight yarn and it's not a big project as far as size.
Linda
Hi Linda! I only use ChiaoGoo 9 inch circulars for socks. And then, of course, I use dpns to close up the toe. I typically knit with a US size 1.
@@alovelyyarn thank you so much. I was looking at those kind online last evening and just wasn’t sure. I have some Chao Goo larger size and enjoy them but so many options I couldn’t decide. You’re so helpful, I very much appreciate you taking the time to help. Linda
I knit continental and have to go down 2 needle sizes. And then I go up 1 from recommended needle size for colorwork.
That's what I'm going to have to start doing if I want to knit continental. Thank you!
Stitched by Mrs. D, This Little Wonderful Life, Green Lambkins…
Thank you, Vicki!
(Totally worth the money for theirs, most Patreons I don't find that to be true)
By the way, I LOVE the Felix pullover too. Knit one in Barrett Wool Co and immediately started another, a little longer. (I'm like your twin!)
Now, I'm off to binge watch your prior episodes....
I wanted to recommend a video by
Irina Revo Knitting & Crochet for a tubular bind off in 2x2 rib. She makes it really straight-forward, and I have used it for several sweaters!
Oh thank you for the video suggestion! I will definitely look that one up!
Lol.
Me too!

Yep! That's what I'm going to do. It would make the plain stockinette section of a sweater so much faster!
All I could find was "make one row/round of 1 by 1 rib and then..."
So, I don't know.
Could you please tell me if the "Air" tends to pilling a lot? Thank you very much.
So far it hasn't, but my daughter doesn't wear her sweater near as much as I will wear mine. I wear sweaters everyday. I will have a better idea of how it holds up after I finish mine and start wearing it. :)
@@alovelyyarn Let´s wait then. I hope your sweater gives you just pleasures. Thank you and have a nice weekend with your lovely family
