  • Is living Off-Grid WORTH IT??? We have been living Off-Grid for over 4 years now. First when traveling in our camper van and over the last year on our Tennessee homestead. Off-grid living while it has become quite trendy, comes with a ton of inconveniences. Today we talk through our systems, alternatives to these systems and if we think living Off-Grid is worth it.

In Hamblen County, they’re cracking down on people living in RVs.
Now, in Jefferson County, they’ve stopped issuing septic permits for RVs.
They pretty much hate tiny homes.
All they’re doing is adding to the housing crisis.
When people start living in tents, they’ll stop that too.
It’s just nuts. We are losing allowable uses of our own property because people who move in here complain about everything.

there's lots of reasons why ppl want to live off grid, like the housing crisis. like the cost of housing. or the cost of housing, and the cost of housing.

I am sooo jealous. You two are doing exactly what I always wanted. But my ex didn't. I was 40 when I remarried, we built our own home in Ohio, heat with wood, and we're looking into solar when he passed. I am now 69 years not-so-young and can't really keep up with off-grid. God bless you two in all your plans and growth.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dilemma with the state of Tennessee about the cabin! Matt and Cass did you all contact the Builder to see if they could help. The Amish are very fine people and will help if they can. I see that you've moved on but contact them to see if they would come down disassemble it to a point and then reassemble it. I would think if the roof and walls were removed from the platform then putting it back together it would be considered a built on site then later you can still use it as a rental I believe this would only take a few days to do. Best of luck I hope this helps!

Love waking up on Sunday morning and having my coffee with some news about your place. You might consider piping your septic from the trailer to the ground inlet with ABS plastic piping. You're not moving the trailer and those hoses are only meant for temporary use. It will be getting pretty nasty and eventually clog and the UV rays from the sun will slowly eat it up. So hard pipe would be permanent and no cleaning involved. And you can wrap it for winter or even bury it all the way to the inlet. Have the connection right under the trailer where you can keep it from freezing.

    • @RunawayMattCass
      @RunawayMattCass  Месяц назад

Ah appreciate that! Happy to hear that we get to be part of your Sunday morning routine! Hard piping is definitely something that we have/are considering doing. In the meantime, we just make sure we do frequent flush outs. Luckily the pipe is in shade for basically the entire day with the exception of a spot here or there. Hard piping is something we may consider come fall. Hope all is well with you - cheers, friend!

Of course it's not for everyone, but I would think it's definitely worth it. I suspect it's a lot closer to really living when not exposed to the constant manipulation. And working hard gives you appreciation for the small things in life. Contentment. It's where you want to be. Next to God.

I did 100% off grid and found it very difficult and expensive. For us to live comfortably we needed a lot of solar and generators. Thats a TON of money.
I finally gave in and trenched in under ground power to my second property. My electric bill runs about $100.00 a month to run my paid for cabin with all the comforts . I now have a small solar system at that property only for back up if the grid goes down . You can’t tell I even have grid power because I trenched it in underground across 60 acres . My second Rocky Mountain property was meant for off grid but I’m much happier with grid power and solar backup.

Many years ago , due to some abuse issues I was forced to live in a Ford Pinto station wagon for several weeks until I could afford an apartment. I worked in a grocery store as a butcher's assistant or butcher in training. All day the butcher would trim fat off of all the ribeyes and roasts he sold and these bits were thrown away. Since these bits and pieces of scraps that were to be thrown away the grocery store allowed me to have them. So I began taking a bag of scraps home every night and cooking them in a cast iron skillet over an open flame. Not only are these scraps just as good as a ribeye steak it also changed my body. This is no lie, being broke, and having a bag of free meat scraps every day I quit spending money on groceries and starting eating meat scraps only and this lasted for nearly 2 years straight even after getting an apartment. This is what I learned from it all. When you eat a meat only diet you do not stink, your underarms and crotcheral regions do not spawn the bacteria that causes stink. The same goes for your gas, and your number 2 becomes small, doesn't stink, and requires very little paper afterwards. Not only that but eating lots of fatty red meat kept me full all day so I only needed to eat once a day. This is handy information to have if you are a couple living in tight quarters. Another thing I noticed, when a new mom breast feeds her baby the diaper never stinks for months until solid food is added to their diet. The exact thing happens to you when you eat a carnivore diet. I promise you, eat a diet of beef, butter, bacon, and eggs for just a week and you will see a difference in your odors. Go the full 90 days and you will never go back to a standard American diet, I promise. I know I'm just a nobody on the internet but try eating a carnivore diet for 1 week and see how your "smells" improve. Then come back and thank me properly for this advice later.

At age 78, we will never be off-grid, however, based on multi month camping trips, I think I know how we would live. With 39 acres, and based on other RUclipsrs who have been off grid much longer and further north, I believe I would do everything with wood and have enough dead trees to do it year round with your land, however, we would have a covered deck (and I did build one the summer I retired) and cook our evening meals on wood outdoors most all summer when below 95°. We have a gas burner for indoor cooking when needed. We use a fireplace insert for supplementary heat and cook on wood and charcoal in spring and fall, even with a 2400 sq ft home.

Even though we miss the Florida Keys lifestyle, we don't miss the overpriced homeowners insurance, the high real estate taxes, and the forever changing HOA fees. We lived in a condo community in Key Largo, Florida and really enjoyed it, but it just got to a point it wasn't worth keeping, so we now call southern Alabama home. Were off-grid and absolutely love it. We did some major upgrades, installing a well and septic system, and 6000 watts of solar. The lake we live on always has a nice breeze on it so I recently built 2 wind generators using car alternators as the power source, they are both putting out about 1200 watts of power each and helps keep our battery banks charged, especially at night because we installed a mini-split AC unit in our camper. The AC units uses about 700 watts of power on start up and then drops down to 150 watts. The only time I have to run the generator is to transfer water from the well to our storage tanks. If we want to go to Florida, we are only 3 hours from Panama City, Florida.....

Hey, neighbor, welcome to TN. I am an nss caver ham operator bc general contractor ret. and science nut guitar player.
Don't take this wrong. But, I see this on most all panel installs on treated lumber.
Bolting the panels as done by many is a huge mistake. Wood and particularly treated warps and shrinks with age. When you attach them in rigidly they will eventually break the panel. Oh you may not see it visually but the output will. Use the brackets. And don't run the screws or bolts down hard. Leave slack in the bolt so the wood can warp and not flex the panel. You can use some flex material under the panel frame or on the bolt so as the wood moves with age allowing the panel to retain its rigidity. Using the mounting clips and leaving the bolts with some slack rather than tightening them down is a must. Again, I hope this is beneficial to you.
    Industrial BC, GC. R&D
If I knew where you were I might look at the topo and geo. Maps and see if you might have a karst area and proper elevation for cave potential. Great Show. Oh, your building can certainly be attached and anchored. BUT, to use it for a Commercial Venture or Rental is a whole different area.
Good luck and I will continue to watch your progress. Thanks for all your hard work and the key to success is making the effort. If I can assist you with drawings or proper construction design and techniques in Carpentry or any of the construction trade fields let me know. Ron

I live in a 28ft trailer with extra insulation, I survive to -30 with a 350w heater 8.6kw a day, 6kw for everything else, 15kw total a day 100% electric + no chores except compost oh and clean the panels every Sept. Vertical panels don't get dirty, or snow covered.
The past year I did this with 8.4kw array but adding to 12kw total, my set up should produce over 2.5kw in overcast. Last Nov 4 hours of direct sunlight, less than 1% is why I need a lot of solar.
If you double your PV, you could cut your wood and propane usage drastically. I haven't used a mouthful of propane since March. Long story but that tank might stay full for years.

Even before off-grid became a thing, reliable solar panels, batteries, and inverters probably helped a lot of people living remotely.

People should definitely be educated some on living Off-Grid and take an "ease in approach" so that rather than having to learn everything at once, they can do so over time. The dangers of it are also very dependent on how "far out" one lives and if you have an income to support yourself if things don't go as planned.
