Meg, I am an old retired construction worker. I love watching young people learning by doing. Great work so far for a newbie. A note about the hole saw, in case you are not aware. There are special bits ( pilot bit ) to fit the mandrel. A proper pilot bit will have a flat section, some have multiple flats so it sort of looks like teeth. This done to hold the bit more stable as the set screw should rest on the flat. You should think about getting an 8 foot or taller ladder. Those little ones are going to get you hurt.

I love all your adventures Meg and you are doing a great job. But if nobody has mentioned it the drill bit in your hole saw is your pilot bit so you don't have to pre drill it. That will save you a step. Also caulk the screws you put through the ceiling so water won't get into the shop. Your shop is amazing too. I love your doorway into the shop.

Hi Meg So I tend to comment before I finish watching the entire Video. On My 40 foot high cube I drilled through the wooden floor and ran my 1" schedule 40 underground 18 inches over to my power breaker box. I know you don't have a "Power Breaker box" to run to . But that information might be for later on. Maybe you can use a 30 amp water proof RV plug Metal box mounted outside the connex and drill a 3/4 " hole to the outside and use waterproof conduit with waterproof fitting to go through the wall.
Inside the Connex I use the rigid 1" to go to the plugs. I also bought a 12 plug power bar and metal cutting screws used on metal roof installation to help seal the holes, ( I also mastic the outside where I cut thought the Connex) I was drilling to mount the 12 plug heavy duty power bar to the wall above the work bench.

I found that filling a small container with dish soap and dipping your finger in it and running it over your caulk bead is a good way to smooth out the caulk and it makes it nice and smooth. It also helps keep the caulk off your fingers and makes it easier to clean your hands.

Great job, Meg. The table for the A/C unit and the hanging of the light fixtures: If your methods work for you and you are happy with them, then those are the right methods. Here is how I might have done those two projects: When building tables or shelves or anything that I expect to bear weight, I have never been a fan of screwing or nailing the legs to the side of the top. By doing this, one is counting on the shear strength of the fasteners to hold up the table top and anything on it (in your case, the A/C unit). A safer way (in my opinion) is to place the table top on top of the legs. Fasten the top to the legs by driving screws through the top into the tops of the legs. This way, all weight rests upon the legs and is transferred to the ground. No chance of fasteners failing and allowing the A/C unit to crash to the ground. Hanging the light fixtures: A metal container is the perfect place for the use of rare earth magnets. I recently got some rare earth magnet hooks from Amazon and I love them. The LED light fixtures are very light and can easily hang from rare earth magnet hooks. The best part is that if you don't like the placement of the fixture, simply move the magnets to a new spot. Again, your method seemed to work for you. So, don't fix what isn't broke. Just a few suggestions. Great video! I am looking forward to the next one. Peace!!

The weight of the table she made is directly on the legs. The table top was right on top of the legs, the screws are just holding the legs horizontally to the side boards. She could have added a couple braces between the legs under the table top, but I think that's overkill to hold a small ac unit when the legs already had braces on the bottom. That's a good idea about the magnets for the lights.

As a dude who takes on projects and helps my friends/ family, I can truly say that your attention to many details has me talking out loud to my screen, "it's fine!!" "close enough!!" "nobody'll notice that!!" lol! But on the other hand, my fiancee pays the same amount of attention to those little things as you, so I definitely appreciate and admire the subtleties between how "men and women approach things!" How you haven't been picked up by a network for a show of your own boggles my mind, but your channel certainly feels like you're well on your way!! I'm new to your content, but I'm anxious to show your stuff to my fiancee because she has the desire but lacks the time and fearlessness to go into it! Wanted to make sure nobody else mentioned it before commenting if you had already seen it, but don't forget to caulk up the holes on the roof where the screws from the light brackets are placed. Especially since they are in the valleys from the outside, just that much easier for water to get in. I really like the color choice for the siding, definitely easy on the eyes - not one of those bright vivid colors that hurts to look at in the sun haha. The inside is looking great too. Nice work! Great attitude!
Tips: 1) Temporarily screw scrap wood to the sheathing so the door frame or window can't fall out through the rough opening. 2) For blocking on the vent louvers, cut a piece of siding a little wider than the vent and turn it upside down. Match the thickness to your trim, cut out the hole, pre drill the screw holes. 3) For easier caulking cut the tip off square, chamfer and round off the outer edge of the cut tip with sandpaper, aim the nozzle 45 degrees towards the direction of travel so you are pushing a little round bead ahead of the tip. The tip does the smoothing. 4) Magnets!

The most effective I've ever been with a hole saw on my drill is to run it as fast as possible on middling torque and barely put any pressure on what I'm cutting, just let it chip away at the material. The speed helps keep me straight and keeps my touch light .

Great to see you tackling these projects and succeeding. One tip for hole saws: When I use a hole saw I predrill the hole to 1/4" (pilot size) and fit a 1/4" piece of steel rod to the hole saw to centre it. Should the saw skip the shaft is much less likely to fail and should it bend is far more easily replaced.

Great vid again meg! My favorite so far. I do hate to be a downer but that sure looks like a 5k btu ac unit. Sadly those in the room units are woefully inefficient in the worst way for your install location. In order to cool they have to expel air from the space they are in. This causes negative pressure that gets balanced with air infiltrating the space from every nook and crack it has available. So in short order they are expelling conditioned air and replacing it with the same volume of unconditioned air from outside. In a home or larger building they are bringing slightly less conditioned air in from adjacent rooms and they can keep up well enough even if very inefficient. In your installation the only air to replace whats expellled is completely unconditioned. And also, even if you had a standard window unit (which would be far far better) it would struggle to do much in that volume of space without some insulation. Again, hate to be a downer but like ya too much to not be honest. 😊 A solar roof ventilator would probably keep the container at ambient temp as well or better than that setup.

That's so great to hear @mrpbright!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Lol this air conditioning unit is definitely not the most powerful out there, but it does the trick! I actually got it during a heat wave a few years ago and it was the very last a/c unit they had anywhere in my home town haha! It's the first A/C unit i've ever had - never grew up with A/C because we never needed it! Wasn't until a few years ago we started getting heat waves every year, now it's a summer essential! For the main house/shop I'll be doing a proper heat pump/a/c set up and this unit can get retired lol! I would also love to do solar but it's currently not in the budget - but hopefully one day!! Hope you have an amazing week!

Good job. Although you may want to increase the vent outlet for the AC. By using a smaller outlet you can create some extra backpressure in the AC, reducing its cooling ability and efficiency. For lifting the can, you can use a small bottle jack, like 5-10ton and lift the low side and shim it pretty easy.

What I did for lights in my container is used those tie down hooks already welded inside the top of the walls. You can see them on the wall when you drilled into the roof. I ran a ratchet strap from wall loop across to opposite wall, then hooked my shop light to the strap. This way the cord is already close to the wall and easy to hook to an extension cord.

Just a little tip ,if you put a air tool fitting on your drill and the aposing handle you can quickly connect and disconnect the handle as needed 😉

  • @KevCampbell
    @KevCampbell Месяц назад +1

Given what Forest fires are like in BC in the summer I think you’re right to be super careful about sparks.
The side grip for the drill is a good choice - I damaged the nerves in my wrist last summer because I put too much torque on it using a power driver at a bad angle.
If it was me, I might be tempted to run cross beams to carry the lights rather than puncturing the “roof” in a valley, where water will sit. You could fasten them to the square tube in the can corners. At the end of the day it’s a sea can, so it’s all good 😊
Lubricating the hole saw is a good practice, I should be more diligent with that.
Even though I’ve been making mistakes much longer than you have, I find your positive energy really inspiring, and hope to bring it to my upcoming projects myself!

@@Meg.August He is correct, I had a small 1500 watt space heater plugged into a good surge protector because the cord on the heater couldn't reach the outlet. I thought it could handle it and it worked fine. The other day I was relocating all my networking equipment into a closet by that surge protector and found the surge protector outlet the heater was plugged into was fried black and the power plug on the surge protector was starting to fry. If you're going to plug an AC unit or heater or any high amp appliance into a surge protector or power strip you need to make sure it can handle 2-3 times the amps of the rating on your appliance. When your AC unit compressor kicks on it draws a lot more amps than it's normal amp rating.

A good rule of thumb is if it has a motor or a heating element in it then it should get it's own socket, if it's an electronic device it can go in a power bar. Or you can think of it like this; if it's for the kitchen, the workshop or outdoors it gets it's own socket and if it's for the bedroom, the front room or a study then it can go in a power bar, except for heaters and A/C.

Lucky you can use those for building. Here we get cold weather. And then mold builds up if the structure isn't breathable. That's why modern roofs use a breathable cloth like Tyvek for insulation and also have roof vents.
