When I was in middle school we had a KC royals scout come talk to us as part of a boys program. He was talking about Bo Jackson in the weight room. At the time the strongest KC Royals player was Steve Balboni. Bo Jackson was so strong they were doing leg presses and couldn't fit enough weights onto the press so trainers were leaning on them to give extra resistance. He said the training staff was just in awe of what he could do.

Bo Jackson made the most incredible fielding play I have ever witnessed in-person or have seen on TV. I attended a spring training game in 1989 (when I was a young teen) at Boardwalk & Baseball in Haines City, home to the Royals. Bo was playing RF that day. A ball was hit sharply to the RF corner, Bo sprinted like lightening to the ball, snatched up the ball and launched a rocket never going 20 ft above the grass, directly to the catchers mit without a bounce to get the runner who was trying to score. It was truly amazing.

Pity his baseball career was cut short playing pro football (at a superior level) and hurting his hip. He has said in interviews that if he had the chance for a do-over, he would stick to baseball after college. I would have traded every highlight of him on the pro gridiron for a 'complete' career full of dumbfounding highlights (so many as it was) as a sure HofFamer (though no guarantee of avoiding a major injury in baseball, much less likely than in football). The most remarkable athlete ever, to be sure.

Bo Jackson should be in the NFL Hall of Fame. It's a bit like Shohei Ohtani in MLB. Ohtani has already earned a room in the HOF. Longevity may be a factor for most professional players to be considered HOF worthy. But there are a select few players who achieve that level without regard to length of playing time. Bo deserves it for what he did in such a short time, a legend among legends.

I swear he teleported himself 10 or 15 yards in an instant. I've never seen a human being move that fast. A pro-bowl corner with an angle missed him by 3 yards. It makes sense because the Era matters and context matters……As good as Jim Thorpe was, his times today would make him a D3 level college player.
Also people need to be discerning with this conversation…….Bo is certainly the best MLB/NFL athlete I’ve ever seen…..Does that mean he’s the greatest athlete ever, no……But when you’re talking about Baseball/Football, Bo was the best and it’s not even close.
Even more to it, Greatest and Best aren’t the same thing. Tom Brady is the greatest QB all time, does that mean he’s the best to do it, nope. Greatest is a legacy title, Best isn’t.
Thorpe might be the greatest, but the best….sadly no.

    • @sydboski

@@Silver_79 1. You cannot directly compare Thope's times, heights and distances to today's athletes times. Today's athletes do not have to hold down a regular job in the off seasons or during the season like they did in Thorpe's time. They did not have the advantage of almost 100 years of evolution. No only are people bigger and stronger, equipment, running surfaces, training, and nutrition all have evolved. Thorpe was High jumping and pole vaulting into sawdust or sand. The landing pits themselves allows athletes to jump and vault higher just in the fact that they can land without killing themselves. The Fosbury Flop would not be possible without the soft pits. The new flexible poles for the vault, Thorpe did not have. He did not run on mondo rubber tracks and did not have starting blocks. There is more, but I think you get the point.
      2. The comment does not say football/baseball, it says greatest athlete. So no, it doesn't make sense.
      3. Greatest and best are different, but in this situation the only would be the greatest AND the best. Thorpe is the ONLY athlete who competed in 4 sports at the highest level. Sooo....Yes, that makes Thorpe the best and the greatest.

So no, it doesn't make sense." - Well it does make sense because again context and Era matters. Saying Thorpe would essentially dog walk todays athletes is pure speculation. Yes in his day he was a phenom, and its not outside the realm of possibility that he would be just as dominant today. However that is just pure speculation. We can only go with what we have.
Bo on the other hand would still be just as dominant today as he was then, we don't have to speculate at all. His times, abilities, size are just too much.
If you want to make the case that Thorpe was a better 4 sport athlete against Bo specifically, that would technically be possible but only because Bo didn't play 4 sports....................However as a MLB/NFL athlete, Bo was the best and its not even close. Second there are athletes walking the streets that could be even better and for whatever reason never played or washed out of sports. I’ve been alive long enough to have seen all of them but Thorpe, Owens and some of the athletes deemed great from those early days.
