- The Great War: Western Front reviewed by Leana Hafer on PC.
World War One rarely gets to shine so authentically in a strategy game, but portraying it with accuracy doesn't always translate into a good time. It's easy to feel bogged down when you might go several turns without any significant changes in the overall situation, with a successful offensive in one area completely offset by enemy momentum somewhere else. Still, it wouldn't really be World War I without these elements, and Western Front can still be a good time.
#IGN #Gamign
"Fighting over the same stretch of land with the same tactics is boring" wow you described ww1 accurately congratulate
It's probably why we don't see many WWI games as it was so static.
That's basically the entire thesis of the review, yeah
then don't make such boring games
It depends on the front and battles .
That's exactly what he's saying. So, uh, "congratulate" to you.
A few people seem pissed at the reviewer for no reason. He justified his points and said why some things work and don’t work, and overall he still gave a decent score. What’s there to be mad about?
New to the IGN comment section? These people don't know what they want, they just think it's cool to hate on IGN and their staff.
Most people who follow IGN just seem to enjoy clicking on any review they made already knowing they will hate on the reviewer and spit on the whole ign network no matter what is said. It's a way of life to these people.
why does criticism of a review seem like being mad to you? maybe its just your perspective?
It's actually a she.The reviewer is a woman.I found out through her profile page.
Stranger Man.That's okay though. It's because of the voice, right?
Let me put it this way, if you enjoy the ultimate general games, you like historic warfare games, and your keen on WWI you will thoroughly enjoy this game
Having Pause and Unpause not only be two separate buttons, but to make it that you can't bind them to the same key to toggle it is weird. There's literally a pause key on the keyboard that has been assigned to work this way for decades, that or the P key.
It sounds like most of these complaints are just about WW1 in general - but solid review
@4:18 The reason that you can't bind pause and unpause to the same button is explained in the tutorial. As the historically flavorful military person describes, "sometimes it is wise to step back, pause and take a look at the battlefield. However, right now, time is of the essence!" Splitting up the key bindings for pause and unpause allows us to really reflect on the dichotomy between these two very important situations.
My favourite review of this game was from another platform where the reviewer said the game isn't enjoyable because most battles ended in a frustrating stalemate and nothing more than a huge loss of supplies and men. Well... yeah!
Thanks for the review, Len. Always enjoy your take on strategy games. Looking forward to a 3MA podcast on this one 👍🏻
That's funny. You spent the whole review saying that it doesn't work as a game. But then at the end you say that you think you'd rather play it this way then sped up and gamified. So your simultaneously saying it doesn't work, but you wouldn't have it any other way.
This is an excellent review, echoes a lot of my thoughts on the game.
As a history buff I have always disdained WW1 generals for not being able to think outside the box and outmaneuver this whole stalemate shit or look for ways to reduce the number of casualties.
After two hours of gameplay, in which I became careless with casualties and pushed every fucking frontal assault I could and even ordered artillery drop on my own troops to supress a fucking machine gun. I had won a complete victory twice in the same region tile. I felt good with myself and thought I had solved WW1
Only then I realized It had took me over a year to advance some 50 miles at most and at the cost of 300,000 lives 😂
In that moment I understood WW1 generals. God this game is good, if you like history
RTS game developers need to learn from Grand Tactician Civil War now that's how you make an RTS game. They got everything from extensive logistical options, to being able to plan your own battles and campaigns.
Have this game and having completed it, its lacking many things. It definitely not repayable. Very repetitive Its so close to being awesome but many things drag it back. Many reviews are saying unit deaths to fast, time limit, xp for units, campaign very basic, no workshop or mods yet, the list goes on.
You're the type of people that posts bad reviews on a game on steam a few days after its release with 479 hours played...
@@fastsnake em not really, get your facts right
@@DameWhoGames623 You don't "complete" this game. There's no such thing. Maybe you've finished one grand campaign, but you didn't "complete" the game, old chap.
@@fastsnake Why are you so pissed off? Calm down. All the guy did was legitimately give his opinion on the game, there’s no reason to attack them like that.
Meh.... this game slaps 10/10 for a actually ww1 rts!
What did you expect! I’m enjoying it
Any RTS is worth a shot today.
Its fun but not fancy. Basically a tower defense with sprites.
Great review thank you
It's easy to tell the reviewer is not a historical simulation gamer. He should stick to Legend of Zelda.
It really makes you feel like you are a ‘Great War’
Is it 7?
7/10
this game looks sick
Slow grindy game
Sold me! 😊
Look, if you want to make a WWI game, make it a 4x game.
Ww1 is not boring they made a boring game 🎯
this is one of the most obnoxious reviewers... It's not just the fact that he thinks the game is mediocre but holy crap, the unenthusiastic blabber, the bitterness .. I couldn't watch past the first 3 minutes. I've seen people review games they absolutely hated in a much must better way. Watching these 3 minutes felt like eating raw eggs with the shells but instead of yolk you have broken glass.
it irritated me so much that I had to comment. and I almost never comment
this dude is pissed off that the game is like the real war and that he can't properly use units but blames the game instead of admitting this
Kalergi Plan 🤔
Western front only? Boring, hard pass
Tja! Missed opportunity! If they had built in an option that you could zoom in the fights via first person shooting.Would this have been a cool game. And were you more involved with your units/solders! Now it's going to be a long boring winden click fest. And finally look at an anthill! During the battles!
its a strategy game
If you want a WW1 FPS just play Tannenberg or BF1.
Can't watch this review because this dude's voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I made it 25 seconds
IGN hates real time strategies
😮
EYYYYY
Sloppy 2nds!!!
So what you are saying about the " stall or shuffle around a bit" you mean accurate AF lol
awful review
reviewer review: 7/10
Be productive rather than hateful. What was wrong with the review? How can it be better? Do you have specifics? Be a person, not a nasty keyboard troll.
@@HistoryTeacherSteve dude chill, he is just playing around.
@@dennisthemenace4288 Is he though? Sounds more like he’s hating IGN for the sake of hating IGN rather than being constructive
@@ChadwickMann people poke ign all the time, relax. This is one of those times (assumption).
@@dennisthemenace4288 But it's tiresome. It's just not funny. It's the easy, obvious joke to make.
Got here early😊
Congrats. You came early. Story of your life.
@@Immariolopez you finished his whole career.
is a horrible game
normie reviewer
does anyone understand what those French people talking about in 3:04?🥲thanks a lot
One of them says "what is your favorite cheese?" and the other says "the only significant decision is this: to kill oneself or have a cup of coffee? All other philosophy is secondary to this primary confrontation."
