Everspace 2 Review

- Everspace 2 reviewed by Jon Bolding on PC, also available on PlayStation and Xbox.
This sequel is pure, distilled video game, all about how its space combat action plays moment to moment rather than whether that makes sense in a game world or fits a complex and nuanced story. The story could be better written, more entertaining, and set in a more original universe, and the missions or enemies could have more variety. But those faults didn't take away from the main reason you're there: To play with cool spaceships, tweak weapons into fun and crazy-powerful new combos, and meet new people to blow up.

love this game, ive played elite dangerous, star citizen, eve and no mans sky and let me say, this is by far my favorite. you dont need to spend hours learning the game, hours learning how to fly, hours learning all the mats. thats not to say that it isnt in depth to an extent but they make it so easy that anyone can play this game. if you are on the fence about buying it, play the demo. the demo is literally the entire system of the game where you can spend 2-6 hours depending if you want to rush missions or explore as well, also your save will carry over to the game seamlessly if you buy it.
Are the planets procedurally generated like no man’s sky?
@@Thetopglazeno
@@Thetopglaze The planets? No. They are handcrafted.
But the some areas in space (usually for encounters) are procedurally generated, just like ES1.
Also, roguelite level (Ancient Rifts) is procedurally generated.
Lol the complexity of elite dangerous controls are precisely why it’s such a great game, arcadey space combat gets boring very fast
Thanks for this insight. It looks like it carried elements of Star Fox, in terms of dog fights.
I've sunk 100 hours in the Early Access, this is the most impactful 6DOF shooter I've played since Freelancer. Really fun stuff.
Freelancer reference is enough for me to buy it
Agreed
Why are you calling Freelancer a shooter? Its genre name is Privateer/Trader and its whole point is you can do whatever and not just shoot.
I'm confused, the steam store says it released in 2021. Did it recently come out of early access? Also a lot of reviews say its around 30 hours long, which in my opinion is not worth the £45 price tag
@@qasderfful Because you shoot stuff in it. Cut the semantics nonsense.
The score is 7
7 out of what?
@@InlandEmpire011 10.
@@InlandEmpire01135
Thanks man it was taken so long… lol
@@InlandEmpire011 out of 5. What do you think?
Brutal scoring. The gameplay is on point. Twin sticks makes it so insanely challenging and fun.
Been playing this since early access on PC, its a great title. Like someone said, its a proper 6DOF title that we haven't seen since Descent or Freelancer, id love to see more developers take a shot a creating more modern titles like the aforementioned. its a solid 8/10.
Actually there's Overload that released a few years ago and does a decent job in modernizing Descent.
Been playing this since the Early Access release, and man, Im never tired of looting more and more OP stuff to obliterate lower level enemies, this game is super fun
Lol.
Got boring within 5 minutes.
Not even kidding.
That intro was enough for anyone to never want to touch the "Galaga / spaceinvaders genre" ever again.
@@Prof.Pwnalot were you a freelancer fan?
Is this game online only?
Everspace 2 = Closest modern equivalent to Freelancer ( my all time favourite game ). Its a 9.5/10 for me.
Ohhh yeah .... that's the comment I was looking for. Thanks 1000 times.
@@Arindam_Gaming seriously, it's everything I wanted Scam Citizen to be. And it didn't take 12 years to release.
@@StriderZessei Totally ! Freelancer would have also not released if Microsoft did not fire Chris Roberts, salvage the dev build & productionalize it. Freelancer's awesome music is again thanks to MS & not Roberts who wanted a more orchestral tone.
If you're looking for that nostalgia - you found it, that is the closest to freelancer 2 we can get.
* Video Game Exists *
IGN: Great Game, Awesome game. Then gives it 7/10
"Great game, awesome game - for space combat. Story is nearly non-existent with drudging dialog and the mission formula comes in two variations."
7/10 matches the reviewers comments perfectly. You don't get a 10/10 by perfecting just one aspect of a genre.
he trashed the game for 5 min straight have you even watched the video. He was positive only in the last part
@@jacobunderwood4957 IGN gives walking simulators that barely have any gameplay 10/10s left and right.
@@rowingaway FACTS 👏
Seems like it might have some Freelancer vibes which I'm all for as it's my all time favorite space game
Yes, this is something for you!
Kinda freelancer in a shallow pizza of box with lots of loading.
"Everspace 2 is a game" - Ign
Yes it's a game
Its a space game..with spaceships!
"It has missions"
@@Wolf.moon23 "its industrial genre"
Review is based of early access. A lot of the things discussed were already changed and added upon in 1.0. I'd say this is a false review as a whole but given IGN's track record, not surprised.
What was changed/added that isn't mentioned in the review? Genuinely interested
While listening to the video, it sounded like an 8 but received a safe 7 in the end... weird.
To me, this game sounds like super fun! It only has one downside, the console version (Xbox in my case) is not available yet. And by the time it's scheduled to be released, Diablo 4 is probably available already which will "demand" all my time :-) .
waiting for xbox release here too, for me, new zelda will "demand" my time on switch :D
Oof, the D4 beta has been really rough. They won't be able to fix it in time. Probably gonna be a D3 scenario where it releases as a poor game and then gets slowly improved over the next 2 years.
Can't wait for D4 already got my pre order in
@@XFreeStyleZXit wasn't rough
@Oliver Yeah, you're right. Rough was the wrong word to use. "Barely holding together", "poorly planned" and "worse than Diablo 3 in literally every way including graphic design" are more accurate.
Been playing this on series x and thoroughly enjoying it, a 7 seems harsh
Well it’s official. Modern gaming is not dead. 2023 proves it.
Totk is still coming

And Remnant 2 👍
And Over The Hedge 2
7 is really off, especially while the whole video sounds like an 8. And 7 is not doing the game justice....did you play it thoroughly? The side missions are really cool, like Ghost Ships AI going rouge or the Scrap-Yard with an abandoned droid. The game never aimed to be a SIM, but an ARPG in space like Diablo - it should be measured as that. Maybe check out my Preview for way more details about the game.
This is the same team that made the GALAXY ON FIRE GAMES. I’m so excited for this game tbh!!!!!
This game deserves a 9/10!! Its much better than mentioned in this video review.
You sold me at Necromancer Spaceship.
What made Chorus so great to play was the drift mechanic where you can straif and change direction really quickly, I'm not seeing this here, has anyone played the beeta to comment between how it compares?
It's much easier to navigate ships in ES2 than in Chorus, IMO. Chorus not having the 6 degrees of freedom feels really limiting to me.
@@ponderingfox please elaborate on 6 degrees of freedom?
@@lancealex382 up/down left/right forward/back. Chorus’ lack of a hover functionality up and down made it feel hard to position the ship sometimes. Though the games are meant to do ship control in different ways. ES2 has a way to toggle Newtonian physics if you want to initiate a slide, though it’s not the same thing as Chorus.
This is my Starfield
Anyone who played Galaxy on Fire 2 will appreciate this game.
Its GOF2 with Everspace story-line, love it
Easy to play and throughly enjoying it. It was a little tedious at first but it's been really fun exploring and collecting weapons/ resources
After chorus I'm not sure any space sim will control as well😢
broooo this. that drift mechanic was so fun to play with. imagine they make a sequel with more handmade tunnel exploration and a better story. chorus was a captivating narrative away from a masterpiece.
Reminds me of Chorus (which was solid) but without the super powers. Even looks the same in most respects
How does it play with a fligh stick / HOTAS?
Man time flies. I was searching for this game for months after it was announced, now I come back & it's been on PS5 for a year already? Time to give Helldivers a rest.
I’m not familiar with the genre but this sounds really cool, with different ships that have a necromancer or assassin archetypes etc. And a 50hr main story sounds huge. I’m surprised it only got a 7. I might have to check it out.
The Necromancer ship gameplay is crazy fun too - I've probably sunk more time on that particular ship in the early access than any of the other ones
Thank you for acknowledging that looter shooters are essentially just combining the mechanics of both RPGs and shooters into one genre, but not all RPG shooters have random loot, up until far cry 6 the far cry series never really had much RPG mechanics, some ppl complain about developers just throwing in RPG mechanics in no matter what the genre, but that has been the trend for a long time, if these types of games didnt sell well then nobody would make them, but RPGs are more popular now than they've ever been
Can someone compare to Freelancer? Freelancer was one of the best games I ever played. The atmosphere of this game was awesome. I loved sitting in the dark room flying through space following a story line.
it gets repetitive really fast, jumping from container to container get boring fast. And picking up leftovers from ships
"Those who prefer Nutonian space flight experience will be disappointed" - so reviewer didn't even found that it is possible to disable "inertia dampeners"...
The comments are a little bit suspicious. A lot of people saying they played early access and it's perfect. Seems like bots.
The art style from the ships to the characters seems miles away. Really disjointed.
Love the first one and can’t wait to get my hands on this
Game pass
crushed the story in 30 or so hours it was a great 4 day romp. worth picking up for sure.
Is it better that Chorus? That game was amazing on the hardest difficulty it was like knight rider in space.🎉
That dude reviewing basically doesn't like the concept of the game. Its just a very fun no nonsense arcady space shooter, the story is a fine background, and even the puzzles are a fun distraction, obviously if youre grindin this for ages every day to reach your review deadline you're gonna have a different perspective. It is not a 7/10 game cause it does what it wants to do very well, and people readin 7 will translate that to "a bit janky/annoying". Its just an 8
Didn't realize this was a new game...Just played it and is VERY fun. Addicting!
Loved the first game and can't wait to play this one. As soon as it's available on PS5, I'm playing day one!
7/10?! Thus proving IGN is a 0/10. Game is at least a 9/10.
IGN is still a bad joke.
This game is a lot of fun. Played in early access. Definitely worth the money
*gives a 90% glowing review* "yeah 7/10"
7/10? WTF is that score? This is one of the best games I've played in years, and I'm not a sci-fi guy at all. It deserves 9/10 or 8.5 at least.
Can we please have more actual competition to IGN? The people doing reviews are only half awake 😂
You're joking right? There are countless independent reviewers of much higher quality than IGN.
IGN is bottom of the pile when it come to competition. Search around there is much better and popular reviewers out there
This review missed the absolutely gorgeous surroundings in this game. Deserved more than a 7 in my opinion
IGN keeping the horrible review streak alive.....this game is 9/10. If not better.
impressive, but can we FISH?
Imagine if Avorion had this level of production value.
Great review, definetly getting it.
As a complainet, but not really, would have increased immersion by like x10 if you could walk inside your ship, maybe in a tiny room that is the same regardless of the ship. Or if you could have a controllable character to move maybe during missions.
But a great game nonetheless. It gave me Cosmoteer vibes despite the latter being a 2d ship building game
Is it all ship based gameplay? And does it have any management elements or strategy mechanics
30 enemy types... You say that like most looter shooters don't have like 3
Been itching for this to finally release. The first was a blast
Does this game get any better? I'm just going around looking for scraps...
Chorus is 8/10, this is 7. interesting
Stingy bastards giving 7/10 , most critics giving 85 for ES2 .
protip: if you feel combat is too "arcadey", disable the inertial dampeners to pull off those cool combat maneuvers
wooahh Galaxy On Fire sequel looks lit
everspace 2 does not look like a space sim on the outside, tf you talking about? it screams arcade style the moment you see it.
This is a very odd IGN review. Clearly reviewer was passionate about the game and enjoyed it. Review sounds like an indie. Not some big outlet like IGN
It is great. Try it. 9/10 IMHO
IGN’s reviews have been HORRIBLE lately they need to find new people to review games
Ive never heard a reviewer sound so pumped about a game and then give it a 7... sounds like a bad reviewer
Anyone played Chorus, that was amazing and being able to drift in battles was amazing
Does this have an open world like Freelancer?
if only they brought this gameplay to galaxy on fire series and follow the galaxy on fire 2 HD formula
Insanely enjoyable for such simplistic game
This game is great! We gave it a 7…
Its basically freelancer without the RPG Space trader element. A hard pass. HEY MICROSOFT!! GIVE US FREELANCER 2!!!
So is it accurate to say ES2 is Diablo in space? simlite, RPG lite, looter shooter?
A revisited ms-dos Descent game.
Even this game can fly starship in planet.. shame starfield
This and Spacebourne 2 gives hope for future space games
The original Galaxy on Fire 2 on mobile
Devs.
7gn you know the score
Roadhouse
This is way more than a 7/10 game ........
IGN just gets worse and worse as the years go by. What happened to your writers who actually enjoyed playing the games they review?
When does this come out on Xbox
Not gona lie, im enticed to play, but really, REALLY wish it had multiplayer
Is it 7?
This is for people who play space shooters. What are they gonna do? Not play it? How many such (recent) games are out there
This game definitely needs more updates so it can play well on low spec consoles like the steam deck!
Where is my starship velociraptor!!
30 enemy types is "stale"?
It's a fun game. Ngl. I'm playing Starfield now, but I'm going back asap.
Terrible outdated cut scenes. Hope it’s not listed as full price on console?
Combat, and then prepare for more combat...... wtf else do we do in space games? I'll wait.
spaceship building games have been revolutionising the technology in the industry, adding things like ingame programming, trading, mining, building literal cities, literal racing dedicated servers etc. for example x4 foundations is another example of a space game where combat is just a drop on the ocean, industry tycoon, rpg like missions, trade, fleet management, crew management etc
@@jh5kl yah thats more of a real time strategy space game... this is an arcade style space game... big difference
This is Outlaw Star the video game. finally !
Wow this guy would love Diablo. That entire game is go here and kill something.
but guys...where's chorus 2?
It's April 6, in the afternoon.
Don't see Everspace 2 on PC gamepass yet. Sigh
High No Man's Sky vibes here, love it :)
This game is better than this review is giving it credit for!!!!!!
This is the space game I’ve been waiting for!
Been looking for something like Freelancer for ages... is this the one?
So is it the one? Im about to buy it
Yup,Def the one
looks like Chorvs with more bells and whistles
souds like an actually informed review
Maybe this is a worthy replacement for Descent Freespace... been waiting on one for ages :).
It isn’t
ES2 is closer to Freelancer than Freespace in gameplay. It's a great game, might be the best space shooter I've played in a while, but comparing it to something as *_legendary_* as Freespace is a little unfair :D
EDIT: Everspace 2 has a free demo on Steam if you're interested.
Kind of bad timing considering the NMS update yesterday.
this game looks awesome, been waiting for a Freelancer-like game like this
