  • It has often been speculated particularly within the Italian press that there was foul play involved with their elimination from the 2002 FIFA World Cup at the hands of the co-hosts South Korea.
Weighing up a very disreputable referee against the typical home overachievement that we are used to seeing at major international football tournaments, in another mini-documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look back at South Korea's success at the 2002 World Cup and evaluates the evidence in both directions.

Byron Moreno was not given a heroe's welcome, Ecuador despites him because of the horrible performances on the 2002 World cup. As a matter of fact, the ecuadorian football culture still hates him. He left a bad reputation for ecuadorian referees. And, as of this moment, Conmebol (the intitution of football in latinamerica) still prefers other nations to represent them in official tournaments. I'm Irish & in my opinion the Ireland v Spain last 16 game was also fixed but Ireland was too incompetent to win.
In that game Ireland was awarded 2 penalties. We scored the 2nd to take the game to ET.
Spain also had 3 or 4 goals disallowed in 90mins. IIRC the 1st goal was disallowed goal was offside. The 2nd goal disallowed for offside was not offside. I think there was a 3rd goal disallowed for offside that was not offside.
At the start of the 2nd half another Spainish goal was dissllowed. Even the Irish tv commentary team couldn't understand why that goal was disallowed.
I think FIFA wanted Ireland to progress to play S. Korea as they would need less help v Ireland than they needed against Spain.

You’re both right, I think. Germany is Germany, always a tough team to beat, but they were definitely a team greater than the sum of their parts, and it showed against Brazil. Meanwhile, Spain always seemed to be the opposite in the pre-2010 era, a team with so many talented players that always seemed to underperform at the critical moment. It’s hard to say who would win but I think Spain would have a chance, just by reaching the semis, they would have a massive confidence boost, doing something no Spanish side had ever done before.

Spain wasn't as brutal but they just got goal after goal denied and one offside decision was a gg opportunity. I couldn't believe what was going on in this joke of a word cup. Spain and Italy had the ability to go all the way and Italy were hounded by the refs for the whole tournament.

I know home nations get a few decisions but South Korea got so many it was pretty obvious they were being pushed to keep the atmosphere going on home soil to promote the game in Asia. That's the problem with people who were either not born or were too young to remember, they don't see what others saw it was about an investment in the game to grow it so FIFA could develop these continents and create more wealth.

Italy couldn't cope with South Korea's pressing and like a lot of Italian national teams when it's not going their way they started diving, whining and playing with the air of victimization. Although the team looked good on paper only it's defence was effective. Totti and Del Piero were too similar so Del Piero was pushed forward where he was ineffective the midfield had zero creativity leaving it all to Totti and the Koreans knew that and acted accordingly.
      Look at this line up:
      www.transfermarkt.com/south-korea_italy/index/spielbericht/987570
Only Totti, Del Piero and Vieri are attacking players. Two defensive midfielders and everyone else is a defender by trade, They got everything they deserved in that game. And but for Materazzi getting Zidane sent off they wouldn't have won the competition 4 year later either.

My first WC was 98. But as a German, and being a little older, 02 was the one that really stuck to me. Brazil really deserved it, with this legendary team: Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Cafú, Rivaldo and even young Kaká, just to name a few. The final although was close and with Ballack not being banned and Kahn _(still the winner of the Golden Ball/best player)_ without his slips, if, if , if...
Along 06 there was probably no WC I followed that close. Even though of the weird kick-on time's. Our game against Paraguay, for example, started at 8:00 AM, if I remember correctly.
It also made the foundation of our WC successes. 02=2nd, 06=3rd, 10=3rd and finally the title in 2014! 2018 came as a little shock to me _(remember the Confederation Cup and the European Under-21 Championship one year before)_ but I can live with it because in 2014 I could finally experience the great feeling of being the champions of the world!
I also just missed one of Klose's 16 WC goals, against Cameroon _(don't know why)._

I am an Italy fan and the manner of the elimination left me incredibly embittered. A few days later I was even more incensed when yet again the referee sided with South Korea against Spain. As soon as the referees stopped doing their "job", South Korea were easily set aside by Germany and Turkey.
That said, it is unhelpful to focus solely on South Korea/Italy/Spain. The whole tournament was riddled with ridiculous officiating mistakes, below just some which I can recall.
-Turkey v/s Brazil: Rivaldo's drama to get opponents sent off.
-Argentina v/s England: Owen dives for a penalty, Collina pretends not to see the dive and gives it. To be fair Batistuta should probably have received a second yellow earlier in that game.
-Italy v/s Croatia: two valid goals by Italy (Vieri and Inzaghi) disallowed by the lord of bad referees, Graham Poll.
-South Korea v/s Portugal: some pretty contentious decisions there, all directed against the Portuguese. Joao Pinto sent off after just 27 minutes in a must-win game for the Portuguese.
-Italy v/s Mexico: another non-existent offside found against Italy as they scored.
-Belgium v/s Brazil: the Belgians take the lead with a superb acrobatic goal, only for it to be disallowed for a foul nobody had seen. Brazil go on to win 2-0.
-South Korea v/s Italy: Moreno messed up this game so badly that his most glaring error went unnoticed. Gattuso scored what should have been a winner, only for a non-existent offside to be given yet again.
-Germany v/s USA: USA almost score on a corner as one of their players heads the ball. A German on the line saves with his hand... officials rule there's nothing to see!

As a Korean, Korea should absolutely have lost to Spain, no question.
Korea vs Italy was a toss up if you look at the statistics of the game, but Italy should have edged Korea. Even with bad refereeing, Italy could have won but the goal was disallowed.
Korea got to the round of 16 FAIR and SQUARE and the campaign should have ended there. Portugal was poor, even lost to the USA, who got demolished by Poland and should have lost 4-1 to korea (19 shots to 5-6).
Germany and Turkey did not set aside Korea. The loss was a margin of one goal for each match.

Roy Jones Jr. could give you a few tips about South Korean host nation "influence"

  • @lkjs-si2sr
    @lkjs-si2sr 3 года назад +3

Wait a sec.. about the host nation always performing better, it is true. Valid point. But lets not forget this WC was co-hosted. Take a look at the other host's performance in 2002, it was much more realistic. In a group against Belgium, Russia and Tunisia, at that time, it was clearly very even and being a host could make a significant difference, which it did. Japan topped the group, but were then knocked out by Turkey on round of 16. Similar to USA (who then had a semi-professional team) in 94.
But South Korea's case was simply scandalous. Of course, I am not a detective assigned to investigate into that, and I think this was NEVER investigated at all, hence we don't have any substantial proof. But in this case the lack of proof only adds to the suspiciousness. It is pretty clear these results were fixed. I don't even think SK had a good team that year, they were clearly outplayed, especially against Portugal and Spain. And Sepp Blatter blames it on Italy's mistakes? Come on..
Also, I'm from Brazil, and I think this scandal benefited Brazil more than even South Korea. There was ref. help against Belgium and Turkey. Also, Italy was likely the strongest team on paper that WC, and that "loss" to SK opened the way to one of the weakest Germany team's ever to make it to the final against Brazil. It is like the manipulation went beyond guaranteeing a spectacular run for SK, but also wanted a Brazil x Big European match at the final.

    • @oldskoolmusicnostalgia
      @oldskoolmusicnostalgia 3 года назад +1

Oh yes. Argentina and France were the favourites heading into the tournament, out at the group stage.
Of the teams remaining, Germany are in a bad period, England are... well, England. Brazil toyed with England even after going 1-0 down and one man down later. Realistically only Italy and Spain could hope to prevent Brazil's dominance. I still believe Brazil were better than them that year, Scolari built a solid team, got his selection and tactics spot on. It's just a shame we couldn't watch them take on Spain or Italy.

2002 is still the poorest WC knockout stage of my lifetime by a considerable distance. When you compare Italy vs Germany in 2006 or Holland vs Uruguay in 2010, then 2002 was shockingly bad. 2002 never had even one classic. The closest game Brazil had in 2002 was a 2-1 win vs a very average England team. Just awful.

I could just imagine the hype of Italy vs Brazil III. What a final that would’ve been. Star studded lineups on both sides, a rematch of 1970 and 1994. Of course, Spain had a great team too, and they could’ve just as easily advanced to the final. Germany was very lucky that both Italy and Spain were taken out ahead of them.

    • @Revenant2010

Trap was not playing with a great formation. Italy had talent, defense and forward and GK were loaded but the midfield lacked creativity (Zambro, Doni, di Livio, Tomassi and Gattuso I think got most of the playing time). Zambro had not yet been converted to a FB yet. Pirlo hadn’t broken into the squad yet.
Italy was really reliant on Totti being the “link” and was struggling (arguably had one good goal disallowed against Croatia). They were scraping by. The squad was just missing something.
Disagree the 2002 squad was stronger than 2006 squad. 2002 squad had bite in midfield. 2006 squad had creativity and bite in midfield.

Wow. I admire the attempt at objectivity. However, Moreno is a criminal, and hardly decided to referee against Italy out of his own volition. He was banned from international refereeing which leads to at the very least suspicions of corruption. But more to the football point: half of the fouls shown in these "misleading" videos were awarded a foul, but not the yellow or even red cards they deserved. SK would never have won given by the end of half time there would have been 5 of them left on the pitch. This sitting on the fence is annoying given the standard of yellow cards displayed was Totti's "simulation". You'd have saved everyone 16 minutes of their time by saying "I can't find proof of corruption, but by god it looked fixed."

"South Korea had a very good squad in 2002, their strongest ever..." - I'm not well acquainted with korean football, maybe it was their strongest ever, but I don't agree with "had a very good squad". A quick research and I found that they had just two players in Europe at the time, one at Anderlecht and one in Serie B (he got his contract terminated after the 2002 WC). Any footballing nation with some results, has at least a handful of players in major leagues acting as the backbone of the team (look at the greek squad for Euro 2004, with players at Werder Bremen, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milano, AS Roma; same for danish squad of 1992), not the case for S Korea team in 2002.

Yeah, the idea that any 2002 Korean players could compare to say... Son Heung-Min is just blatant nonsense. I'm sure Korea now/recently is stronger than they were back in the early 2000s and they still couldn't get past the Round of 16 since the 2002 World Cup, only getting out of the groups stage once in 2010.
People only have the impression that the 2002 Korean team is very good because of their deep run in that tournament. A run that is suspect, to say the least.

While i don't agree with that statement either. The one guy that was in an Italian league was getting death threats after the WC. That's why the contract was terminated. Cos he couldn't go back to Italy for his safety. After that he could have gotten a contract in an Epl team i forgot the name, but his greedy former korean team got in the way with their BS and fined the player for breach of contract and other bs. Affectively making him too expensive for most teams to sign. He eventually found a deal with a japanese team that would sign him but he was playing for them for like half the pay for years. So long story short he was robbed of a great career after the WC.

You ignore a key factor that should have been considered: South Korea had a track record here. They hosted a big sporting even before: the 1988 Olympics. Even though they earned well deserved praise for their excellent staging and organisation of the event, the 12 gold medals they won raised serious issues of corruption. Two sports stood out - both of them infamous for the disproportionate influence of referees or other officials. One is handball. In the women's tournament, South Korea won the gold pretty much coming from nowhere. They later had notable success for a while, but at the time, it could not have happened without serious help from referees. The other sport was boxing. They won two golds there, and it was genuine scandal in the arena. In particular, Park Si-hun's inexplicable win over American Roy Jones was called into question. So, for many people in 2002, it felt like the South Korean's were up to their old tricks.

That's because Portugal's 2 red cards in their group game against South Korea were not controversial. I don't know if you remember that, but the koreans played violently throughout the whole tournament. They KNEW that they - and only they - could get away with it. Other teams obviously reacted to the constant aggressive, unsanctioned fouls, but with the only consequence of seeing their own players thrown out of the pitch by means of red cards. Portugal might therefore have deserved 2 red cards, but Korea deserved at least 2 or 3 every match and they didn't get a single one

The 2002 World Cup was dodgy and controversial, but i can say with 99% certainty that South Korea didn't do anything to fix it. I know this by a documentary shown on the Dutch television of Guus Hiddink and his time as National Team coach at South Korea. Hiddink fought with the own freaking government to get the players out of military service. That's one of the main reasons they performed so good.
It could however, still be possible that there was maffia stuff going on, and that the referee(s) was (were) bought by someone outside of football

Sepp Blatter saying Italy should have performed better neglected the fact that they performed well enough, should have won the golden goal, and that to have THAT many egregious calls against you in a match will understandably cause the players to have their morale and levelheadedness plummet.

Spain, I could understand the frustration because they did have a call where a goal was ruled offside. But Italy has no excuse.
Italians complain even to this day and honestly, they have no one to blame but themselves. If you rewatch the game, the whole game was a physical war between the two nations. It was two teams hacking each other. Many people comment on this game as if they saw the whole match when all they saw was a biased highlight favoring Italians. It shows Francesco Coco bleeding from his head and make it seem like Koreans did it when the truth is it was Tommasi accidently hitting his teammate splitting his head open. Lot of times, it doesn't even include Vieri elbowing Korean player and breaking his nose (no card btw). It is so biased on favor of one side. The officiating was not great I get it but don't make it seem like it was only Koreans who were favored. Italian got away with many fouls and a penalty as well. If you can, watch the full game again and judge for yourself.
In my opinion, Guus Hiddink did a phenomenal job creating a team and the players were willing to die for him (and yes there were favorable decision as home advantage). They out ran the opponents every game and the preparation for the WC was something unseen. I believe Hiddink arranged friendlies against nations like England, Scotland, France and other powerhouses to get his players know the atmosphere of going against great teams (I was in elementary at the time so I might have missed couple nations) and he discovered many young players who went onto play in Europe (Ji Sung Park, YP Lee, etc). Their victory against Portugal was a prime example of how prepared they were.
There's actually a guy on youtube who recently rewatched the 2002 Spain vs South Korea with his Spainard friend. Here is the link.

In the other editions the home teams perhaps had home advantage in terms of having more supporters, but for instance Spain, Mexico, Italy, France and Germany were great teams in the editions they hosted between 1986 and 2006 and, apart from Mexico in 86, they all had the quality for even winning the editions they were hosting and France actually did
