  • Volkswagen Tiguan Gets a Plug-in Hybrid Makeover for 2025
The compact SUV segment is about to get a jolt of European flair with the arrival of the all-new 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan. This third-generation model, set to hit US shores soon, promises to shake things up with its sleek redesign and electrified powertrain options.
Growing in size from its predecessor, the 2025 Tiguan offers increased rear cargo space without sacrificing its nimble handling. Built on VW's MQB Evo platform - shared with the sporty GTI hatchback - the new Tiguan could be one of the most engaging crossovers in its class.
The biggest headline is the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. While full details are still under wraps, VW claims an impressive all-electric range of up to 62 miles. This PHEV variant will likely top the Tiguan range, with an estimated starting price around $40,000.
For those not ready to plug in, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is expected to serve as the base engine. An eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will likely handle shifting duties across the lineup. Front-wheel drive should come standard, with all-wheel drive available for those craving extra traction.
Step inside, and you'll find a thoroughly modern cabin. A massive 15-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, controlling most vehicle functions. Volkswagen has relocated the gear selector to the steering column, freeing up valuable center console space.
Available luxuries include power-adjustable massaging seats, adding a touch of premium comfort to this mainstream crossover.
Practicality remains a strong suit, with the Tiguan potentially retaining its unique-in-class available third row. The 60/40 split-folding second row offers flexible cargo and passenger configurations.
While official pricing hasn't been announced, we expect the 2025 Tiguan to start around $29,000 for the base S trim, climbing to about $45,000 for a fully-loaded SEL R-Line PHEV model.
The new Tiguan faces stiff competition from recently updated rivals like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-50, and Kia Sportage. However, its blend of European driving dynamics, advanced technology, and electrified powertrain options could make it a compelling choice for buyers seeking something different in the crowded compact SUV segment.
Volkswagen plans to release more specific details about the US-market Tiguan later in 2024. We're eagerly anticipating our first drive to see if this redesigned crossover lives up to its sporting heritage and eco-friendly ambitions.
