As a 'Newboy' to FS down in Cornwall, UK, I am impressed by the quality of this video. The clear and unhurried instruction by this Scot is first class. Just what I need at my age.
First, nomenclature: the V-bar FD is called a “single cue” FD, while the two perpendicular command bar type is a “dual cue” flight director. I’ve flown with both on a variety of commercial aircraft and some people prefer one or the other. Most manufacturers give airlines the option what format they want (it’s just software in an EFIS cockpit) and train pilots accordingly. I have only seen dual cue on Airbus, but they have yet another format for being in Track/Flight Path Angle that we don’t want to get into here. I personally prefer the single cue when everything is working. The FD and autopilot in modern planes can be used independently of each other, and we hand fly all the time with the FD on and the AP off. The point to be made is (again, modern airliners here, I don’t want to talk about something like an FD-109 on a DC-9) that when you have the FD on and are hand flying, then turn the AP on, the AP will be in the same modes as the FD was prior to engagement. Likewise, if you had the AP on and the FD off, when you turn the FD on it will be providing guidance to match what the AP was doing before you turned the FD on (this would be extremely uncommon). I hope that helps from a line pilot’s perspective.
Doofer is taking off! You deserve the views and the subs mate, you always have cared a lot about your subscribers, more than many big channels, glad to see you do more and more really useful and informative content. Keep it up! Greets
The strange sound while climbing to altitude, is an Altitude Alert Horn. In general, it sounds when the aircraft is approximately 1000 ft above or below the set altitude.
Could you do a short video on reading different charts? Such as Departures, Arrivals, ILS, DME, RNAV stuff? Weather charts could be a bonus! Love your videos!
Hey Joshua, I've already covered those in previous videos. If you have a quick look through my video list, you should be able to find them.... ruclips.net/user/Doofer911videos
The Flight Director's heading line in the 737 has a glitch where it wouldn't move on the ground. It should work when you're in the air and show a noticeable change. :)
ScienceRedstoneGaming it’s not a glitch, its most likely mimicking the real airplane. On most fms systems the FD logic won’t let the airplane turn until 400ft agl
Hi Doofer911, as skysac already said: a video on fuel pumps and perhaps engine startup procedure in the default boeing/airbus would be great! As for now I'm a bit confused on how to go from cold and dark to engines running in a default b737/a321.
Did you have the video enlarged on RUclips or was it the smallest player size? Also, the graphics quality of the default cockpits is really poor so it might have been difficult to see what exactly was going on.
we would need a more in depth tutorial for holds which are not that easy to grasp. e.g. similar to what capt- joe put on youtube - maybe it can be done more clearly. i dont know yet iof a hold calculator or similar is available. of course, an autopilot that does it for you and displays the holding path in the nd is ideal.
I had a go at explaining Holding Patterns in these three videos if you're interested? Holding Patterns: ruclips.net/video/qmRkz0JJl40/видео.html Entry Techniques: ruclips.net/video/_JQFsd7fN5k/видео.html Entry Demonstrations: ruclips.net/video/OVsrq2AnQyE/видео.html
I never understood why people pay so much money for FDs. It basically makes you the arm of the autopilot. The basic idea is that you use the computer outputs from the AP to tell you how to aim the aircraft to achieve a given altitude or heading. Recall the AP does not just GO to a given heading or altitude, but rather chooses a rate of turn or pitch to get there. Now why would anyone use an FD vs just switching the AP on? Most light aircraft don't have FDs, that is a feature of high end APs. It used to be a completely analog function.
Because it is a huge safety feature and greatly increases efficiency. On something like a Beech 1900, where most don't have an autopilot to save weight and cost, the flight director is a huge help for anticipating level offs (our company doesn't require a 100 below/above call when using an FD) and nailing a reference attitude. We set ten degrees up for takeoff... which really helps at night when even if you have AP you can't engage it below 400 feet.
Oh.... and unless you're talking a really basic autopilot that does heading and altitude hold only... a flight director is required for altitude capture, approach mode, etc. It won't even turn on until the FD is turned on... because that is where it is getting its 'rate' information from.:. a combination of the ADI and DG as well as barometric information.
Doofer911 no problem. I have worked my way though the entire series now... Just need to wait til I fix my PC and I can put this new knowledge to the test. I've always hated relying on the auto pilot so knowing how to navigate without makes me happier.
Nah it was an alert to let me know I was 1,000ft away from my selected Altitude. You often hear it when climbing or descending with an Altitude selected in the Autopilot.
Hey buddy, thanks for the informative video, really enjoyed it. btw I'm using xpplane 10 but im finiding it very difficult to maintain avionics in a plane, maybe cause am using different planes, do you have any recommendations for this issue I know some people are saying " buy the JARdesign A320" cause it has everything in it, but i would like to hear your comment :) many thanks keep up the good work.
I haven't spent enough time in X Plane 10 to get comfortable with the avionics I'm afraid. I've struggled myself to get the autopilot in the default Cessna 172 because it seems to function different to the one in FSX so I'll need to allocate some time to that soon.

Every video I see, I learn something new. You are an amazing guy. Thanks a billion.

Thanks for the information. Could this be related to the b777 FD recent incident?
Not a pilot but a maintainer, this was more in depth than what I learned in school.Thxs
That buzz you got at 17:30 was a speed warning. 250 kts max speed below 10,000 ft. Look at the airspeed indicator.
Wrong. That sound tones when approaching selected altitude. The airplane doesn't care if you exceed traffic rules.
It's quite a good explanation to understand how the system works. Thank a lot.
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the very kind comment Jolly :) certainly will keep going!

When a "quick look" takes 20 minutes. Lol. Great videos man! Keep it up
Another great video mate, well-done :)
Cheers, glad you liked it!

Doofer911 I apparently missed them! Thanks!
Thank you again Doofer for this interesting thing. Simple, clear, well explained with examples. love it ;-)

Simple and clear to understand. Good job.
I think the "course" knob is the one that controll horizontal bar in base fsx plane
It would be the Vertical bar, the horizontal bar gives Pitch guidance, tells the plane whether to climb or descend.
Man. You the man. Your vid. are so clear, organize and so neat....I cant tell you how i love all your videos. Thanks.so much.
+Yonas Abebe Thank you for the kind comment. I'm glad the time and effort that went into making the video was worth it :)
Both Flight Director switches must be on. Thanks, nice vid.

I finally understand the flight director!!
Classic Doofer Quality! Keep those tutorials coming and thanks for doing this.
Thanks for the kind comment! Will keep doing what I can!
Another excellent tutorial video Doofer911.
Thumbs up !
Thanks Contigo, glad you liked it! :)
very well explained...i like the hands on also
Glad you liked it! I always try to include a practical demonstration of something where possible.
I could only just see on a 40" screen! Perhaps use the disabled facility built in to Windows to magnify part of the screen to show more clearly?
Did you have the video enlarged on RUclips or was it the smallest player size? Also, the graphics quality of the default cockpits is really poor so it might have been difficult to see what exactly was going on.
11:30 Actually the horizontal bar shouldn't move either. It should start moving up only after when you get to Vr.
well done ...simple and precise..!!!!
Very helpful. Thanks mate.
Glad you liked it :)
Great explanation! Very good! Thanks a lot for your video.
Thank you for the kind comment, glad you liked the video :)
Great Video. Thanks
amazing video, thanks a lot 💪🏻
the warning was for overspeeding as below 10k feet you are limited to 250knots indicated
Thank you for this video!
Very well done!! As always.
Excellent video, thank you.
+Pops 272 Thank you for watching and for the kind comment :)
Thanks man...
You're welcome, thanks for watching! :)
Interested to know what stick/controller you use please? Thanks for your very clear explanatory vids.
Logitech Extreme 3D Pro
Thanks, I use Thrustmaster now, Logitech don't last long I found.
Seeing the default 737 gave me a lot of nostalgia lol
Yeah was really weird to fly it again for this video!
Personally gave me a lot of cringe :p
Very informative video thank you!
Glad you liked it :)
Most ATPL videos have been taken down from RUclips sadly
Thank you
very good tutorial
pffft just another expert youtube pilot lol
pft, just another moron hiding behind their keyboard.
i guess the disadvantage of the flight director hdg is that its not a bearing to a specific point.
great, thanks.but in my FSX its working normally in all aircraft
Perfect Explanation !!!
Thank you..

cheers for that Captain👌👍
No problemo! :)
I always tought those meters tell whatbare you doing or whats happening instead of what you should do.
it's a lot of condensed information.
Very good video :)
I'm glad you liked it :)

hey doofer.... cool video dude.... i want a video in which i can add a scenery to fsx and even airport.... in fsx se
Scenery usually comes with an installer so it should add everything to FSX automatically for you.
Can u reccomend me the site from which u get scenary with installer???
well done.
Does the flight director work properly on the default 747-400?
Could you add to your FSX tutorial series playlist?
Done, thanks for pointing that out!
Doofer911 no problem. I have worked my way though the entire series now... Just need to wait til I fix my PC and I can put this new knowledge to the test. I've always hated relying on the auto pilot so knowing how to navigate without makes me happier.
this was the best video so far in your tutorials mate youre fucking awesome ! thank you. thank you. thank you keep this up !!
I believe that warning was for going over 250 knots under 10,000 feet. Could someone please confirm that? Great video!
Nah it was an alert to let me know I was 1,000ft away from my selected Altitude. You often hear it when climbing or descending with an Altitude selected in the Autopilot.
What about the pin FD on small Cessnas?
First! Very good video!
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Can you make a video in ILS landings?
Already got one here :) ruclips.net/video/UXuEI5JQDBc/видео.html

Great video Doofer
There is a fix available for the default 737 FD just google fsx738pfdfix to find it
10:17 Was that "Default Boring 737"? lol
I might have pronounced it wrong. But since I got that add-on airbus, I've never flown one of the default jets for a longer flight.
Question: Is there going to be a stream today and if so, when?
No stream planned this weekend.
Ah well. Guess Ima have to be the first to fly from Iran to Israel over Syria.
Thanks
You're welcome :)
COOL!
You didn't link the cockpit instruments video
Thanks for pointing that out!
No problem :)
How do you get does clouds
I use an addon called REX Essentials Plus Overdrive.
dosit cost?
Yeah, I'm not sure how much it is at the moment but you do have to pay for it.
Doofer911 ok thanks :)
Doofer911 do you know any good cloud textures that's are free?
Zoom in !!
not once did you say the word "stall";
Good, I didn't plan to :) should I have said it?
Or you could just fly the plane. Either way, great explanation
Try to fly the plane for 7 hours without autopilot and stay on course
it's a nice video great information and tutorial but as usual the British always take a hundred words to say what can be said in 20.
Would you care to make a tutorial video then so we can all see how it should be done?
stop torturing us with "basically"
