Now retired and decided to learn to fly in the FSX Sim, found this video so helpful, going to find previous ones and start from the first one. So pleased to have found your channel. Your production and instructions are first class. My sincere thanks 🛩
It's been almost a decade since your videos were made, yet I still refer to them from time to time. Someone should give you a medal for creating such a fine series.
FINALLY, Finally, someone is doing an awesome job, to explain in great detail, how to land the Cessna 172. It's a real good addition to the tutorials lessons of FSX! Both thumps up!!
I really enjoy the way you present the instructions. No yelling, no excitement. Just a calm attitude and easy to listen to. It's really hard for me to believe you don't have a pilot license, just a lot of time in the sim. This should be something everyone viewing it should see.
Thank you for your kind comments. I don't have the money for a license sadly so I've been using flight simulation as a way to study so that when I do have the money, I shouldn't have to spend as much time on Ground School work so I can focus more on time in the air.
Perfect! So I am not stupid after all. Your very good. You should be a teacher because you know what is perfect to say and what should not be said to avoid confusion. You have a perfect balance!
FSX has not only made me a fair simulator pilot with the help of videos like yours but to be quite honest it is sometimes difficult enough I also need to give it credit for my improved drinking skills as well. It has only taken slightly more then 300 hours of practice just learning how to take off and land the Boeing 747-400 the correct and safe way and do it pretty much consecutively each time but now when I get into the Cessna it's like going from a Tractor Trailer to a Volkswagen bug and having the much faster reaction scares the hell out of me some times. I guess The biggest mistake I or anyone else could make with FSX is starting out big instead of working your way up from the smaller planes first. It will sure save you money on buying alcohol anyway..LOL!
I'm learning to fly and land a Cessna 172P using Flightgear and I find your instructional videos using FSX to be clear, concise and educational. Keep up the sterling good work !!
I was getting very frustrated with the lack of clarity of some of the tutorial lessons in FSX, but you have made things clear by "talking through" everything in real time. Thank you.
I just watched your first 3 tutorials and I successfully landed my first plane properly...I think Thanks man, it's really clear and easy to follow, you've helped me learn the basics.
I fly the C172 pretty often in FSX but my latest landing was a bloody disaster. I needed three attempts as the first and second try ended in crashing the aeroplane. On my third attempt, however, I managed to finally land but had a tail strike. A FSX-flying session to forget! :D
I hope i'm not late. Just recently trying to learn how to land and have to admit this is the best tutorial. Been trying to understand what the numbers mean on the landing strip. Thanks a lot. i'll subscribe because of this video.
Welcome to the channel, glad this video could help :) if you want a more in-depth video about runway markings, I've done another tutorial at this link: ruclips.net/video/lzx5j1C984M/видео.html
i know for a long time fsx was used in ground schools. i subscribed. these videos show both a seasoned simmer as well as a beginner ( im kinda between the two) the proper way of doing this. thank you
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!! Now look what you've done!!! You've inspired me to take up flight simulator again!! 😜 Very nice and informative videos. Thanks a lot
Thank you so much for these videos. I'm taking pilot lessons right now in the US. I was having problems comprehending the AFD and VOR/ILS systems. But after watching your videos, its becoming clearer to me as to how/why they work. I've been getting my knowledge from a book and some of it is clear as mud! So, thank you very much, not only are these awesome for FSX, but very useful in real world flying as well!
+Marvin Radtke Wow, I'm glad my videos can help with real world application! I'm not certified in anyway though so trust what your CFI says over anything I say! haha
Thanks. Your 'tubes are some of the best i've been able to find. i'm one of the 'visual' learning type and find your presentation style casual and very informative. Please continue.
I'm really loving this series! I've no previous knowledge in flying, but like to study it as a hobby, so this series is gold for me. Thanks for sharing and congratulations for your teaching skills, very clear and direct to the point explanations :)
"It is difficult," Yes. I got the readings wrong on the altimeter and so busy looking at the instruments I forgot to look at the runway markings. I played again at 0.75 speed and gained more sense. Good video. Liked.
Hi Doofer921 I have just come a cross your channel .as a newbie am glad that I did I have watched a lot of other vids about flying but I must say yours is by far the best I've seen obviously I will be watching all your videos .and I appreciate what you are doing it's certainly helping me especially the way you were on the GPS.ill keep watching and saving your vids as you make them because they are most constructed than any other.thanks again.
I have watched a few of these short "lessons" that you produce, they are concise and well explained, very clear to understand so I imagine that anyone who comes into flight simming from new will find these very helpful. An asset to newbies mate, Shame is this sort of thing could not be found when I first jumped into FSX ;) it would have been so much easier to get used to Flight simulation. Great stuff and I like the way you break things down to individual components per vid. :D
I've been playing FSX lately. I was not really that good, mainly because of landing (all sorts of issues, overrunning, falling short, not lining up, not flaring). I just played the Hawaiian Checkout mission and passed. The funny part was as I was entering the pattern, the glideslope indicators were behind trees, and I don't like not seeing my instruments during landing. I stuck to the basics taught in this video of throttle for vertical airspeed and stick for horizontal airspeed. I still managed to hit the runway on the target and was actually able to stop. Excellent explanation of how to land a plane.
Great video. I'm practicing landing at the moment and this video helps illustrate practicing my sim the techniques required to take to the sky and transfer those instincts to the real thing. Great job Doofer!!
No doubt. Although I will tell you that your approach to landing is similar to that of a CFI instructor, so great job my friend. Your vids are a great illustration and refresher course. I think a CFI would agree. Best-
I'm the same as the Mature Simulator, I've already retired, and I'm learning to fly, even in the Fly Simulator, and your videos are really fine, there are things I did not know, I was following the FS in Tutorial & Beginner, but It does not bring any real explanation of the instruments and I felt that I was not learning, but with your videos and the details you give this very well and very interesting, thank you Doofer911
@Doofer911, Excellent video, very helpful and informative in many different points I've struggled to figure out during FSX landing attempts, all answered here in this one video. Glad i found your video and channel. Thank You!
Keep in mind that you are making a very slow approach. Ideally in the 172, you put out your first stage of flap at 110kts, then at 3nm final stage 2 at 85, and reduce speed to 75. Final approach at 500 feet you reduce your speed to 70kts with third stage of flap. The slowest you should be going is 65kts which is final approach speed for short field landings.
Umm I'm sure you've gained more aviation knowledge by now, but you never deploy flaps past 80kts; it is out of the safety white arc. That would damage the flaps severely
Nice job for not being a pilot. You're very close to what my CFI taught me. For landings, my CFI taught me to say a little rhyme to myself; "Hi or Low, Fast or Slow". This focused my eyes on whether the runway sight picture was high or low [and make the adjustment, if necessary], and if my airspeed was fast or slow [and make the pitch adjustment, if necessary. The other teaching was simple rudder inputs to keep aligned. Once I taught my brain this little rhyme, it changed my landing habits greatly. With so many possible things to think about during the landing, this little rhyme made me focus on the 3 basic inputs to master. Continue with the FSX. Hopefully soon, you can get into the real thing. Kudos! -joe
Hi Joe, thanks for your kind comment. I'll definitely try that rhyme next time I'm practicing landings, sounds perfect for keeping your eyes out of the instruments which is what VFR flying is all about. Cheers!
Wow! Very informative video I have watched so far! Thanks for sharing :). I am flying planes since long on FSX, but most of the times, I have used online literature for it, and some youtube videos. But this is the best video, I ever found.
I was having a lot of trouble on my landing approaches, but they're looking way better now that I actually understand the glide scope! Thanks! +1 Sub, and I liked :)
Doofer911 Just a question, I started using the same ultra realistic settings that you use, and I encountered a problem in flight that I am not sure how to fix. When flying the Cessna 172, when I extend the first stage of flaps and begin slowing, the plane starts rapidly ascending despite me desperately trying to decrease the throttle and descend. It ascends roughly 50 feet per 10 seconds, even when the throttle is idle. After roughly 30 seconds to 1 minute, the plane starts to descend as normal. I suspect the issue may be with the trim that I use for landing, with the wheel being pushed a few centimetres forward, but after some testing, altering the trim did not help. Do you have any idea on how to fix this? Thanks. EDIT: The issue may also be associated with my airspeed, usually I try to begin descending at between 70 and 80 Nauts.
+wayland woolsey Hey Wayland, welcome to the world of flight simming! I know my videos are based on FSX but I hope you can still learn something from them :)
It is helpful to know the runway heading which you can commonly find on the map. That way you can know whether you're flying directly down towards and along the centerline. If you notice that you are being pushed, apply rudder in that direction. For example, if you find that you are being pushed right of the runway, apply right rudder. You can learn more on Doofer's video about crosswind landings.
I learned to fly (the "real thing") decades ago, and in those days we didn't have much "electronic assistance". I can certainly state that if you had been doing these videos in the 1970's it would have made my learning experience far, FAR more enjoyable. I know you are a "Simulator" pilot, but have you ever thought of doing "The Real Thing"?? Expensive I'll admit, but there is nothing like "being up there", even in a small 'plane such as the ubiquitous Skyhawk!
Doofer911 Well my PPL has lapsed owing to (significant!) old age and lack of regular flight hours! The problem was funds (check!) and the added issue of annual flight hours and continual education, especially since, my "real" job was pretty demanding time-wise. I would very much like to continue flying, but the cost of aircraft hire (VERY high in Australia) just to get the annual hours in is just too much. Don't even think of buying your own 'plane - our "entry-level" Jabiru's are bloody expensive (for what they are - no glass cockpit for you), and the added recurrent costs (insurance / maintenance / parking / runway fees) are very high. Joint or club ownership is a problem since there's not much fairness where the attraction of "getting up there on someone else's dime" is concerned (been there!), so unless you are of substantial "independent means" it can be a VERY costly hobby.
When u put the flaps down and nose goes up. It's called ballooning, as a pilot u should stop the nose from rising with forward push on the control column.
Excellent tutorial. What controllers were you using and what were the settings in FSX? On my Saitek Pro Cessna, the FSX default settings are hopelessly unresponsive

Popping in to let you know these are still being put to very useful use! Useful, I say! Thanks.
This was so beautifully done, and your voice is relaxing. Thank you!
That's very kind of you to say :)

Woah this really helped me with landings. And just in time; a day before fs2020 :D
Thank you for these Tutorials. Great Teaching Skills. Cheers for helping ; Learning to fly in MSF sim 2020.
Nice landing Mr Doofer. Thanks a lot for the time and effort put in to make theses tutorials they have been so helpful to me as a noob :)
Another excellent video. Learned a lot from you. Thank you mate
You're welcome, glad my videos could help :)
Now navigation ILS, great video really helped me for dcs world.
Cette vidéo est très intéressante merci beaucoup
Liked your videos! Please make more of them. Thanks.
Clear explanation! You're a good teacher :) Nice landing BTW, despite that Caravan taking off! :D
Daan Meere Thanks for the compliment :) Yeah got a bit hairy at the end there! Quickly learned to do future videos without AI! lol
Why? It was a nice addition
Hey thanks doofer , good to watch.
Great video, good graphics and correct procedures being used. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Richard, I'm glad you liked it and that what I was talking about is accurate!
your video is so much helpful for a newbie like me ... keep up the good job
Fantastic, that was my focus when making the video :)
Very nice tutorial.
Absolutely brilliant have added all to favorites
Great work. So appreciated.
very educational men. I'm so thankful i find your chanel

very good videos, thanks for these. very informative and a great pace.
Great Vids man, very instructional, entertaining and accurate. Keep it up!
Will do, thanks for the kind comment :)
Great tutorial, man. Can you also explain how to line up with the runway? Thanks
hey, thanks great stuff.. u make me proud to be a descended Scot!
thumbs up..
Thank you! this tutorial helped me make my first runway landing!
Woohoo! Congrats! :D Glad I could help
happy new year doofer911
Belated Happy New Year to you too!
Wow! Very informative video I have watched so far! Thanks for sharing :). I am flying planes since long on FSX, but most of the times, I have used online literature for it, and some youtube videos. But this is the best video, I ever found.
Thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching, I'm glad it could help :)
Think the videos are fantastic, keep them coming.
Fascinating! Palms became sweaty as we descended below 500' , felt so life-like!
Thanks a lot, that was beautiful!
Love watching your videos Doofer. Thank you :)
You're welcome, thanks very much for watching :)
A good video my friend .i can now improve the technique of landing a small aircraft. Thanks a lot,Blessing!
I'm glad my video could help, thanks for watching :)
Thanks doofer really helpd me out all of it :)
Glad my video could help :)
I was having a lot of trouble on my landing approaches, but they're looking way better now that I actually understand the glide scope! Thanks! +1 Sub, and I liked :)
That's fantastic, congrats on your newfound skills! :D
Doofer911 Just a question, I started using the same ultra realistic settings that you use, and I encountered a problem in flight that I am not sure how to fix. More flaps = More Lift. Try descending between 60-70 knots.
Doofer911 OK, I'll try it out, thanks!
great work
literally going through all your videos to learn for fs 2020
Excellent video
Thanks, glad you liked it :)
Doofer911 I'm struggling with getting in line with the runway on initial approach any suggestions
Practice by doing circuits.
Doofer911 ok like touch and Gos?
Yep
Exactly what 'Stewart Wilkinson Snr' said. Thank you :)
Very well done !
Thanks very much, glad you liked it :)
Thanks for that very well explained
HI im 11 years old and when i am big, i want to become a pilot. So, your tutorials are helping me in fsx to learn. Thank you.
You're welcome, glad my videos can help :) I'm certain that you'll become a pilot one day!
Amazing tutorials even though I have over 100 hours on flight Sim I still learnt things I didn't know, thanks!
I'm glad this video could help you learn some new things :)
Thank you so much for this one🤝🏻
Very good, thanks
Excellent!
good information. I have just purchased x-plane 10, and am starting to try and fly it.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH LONG TIME NO PRACTICE FS-X
I'm glad my video could help, thanks for watching :)
You are a very good teacher! I will pratice my landings. Thank you for the informations. Guy
your videos have helped me alot when i am trying to land. I have always to much speed :P :D Thanks!!!
Great thanks very helpfull
very good
How do get yourself into the initial to commence this landing procedure? Excellent lessons.
+Ever Onward VFR flying + local landscape knowledge ;)
Enjoyed your video. I am having problems maintaining runway center-line (alignment). Do you use rudder at all or just ailerons?
It is helpful to know the runway heading which you can commonly find on the map. That way you can know whether you're flying directly down towards and along the centerline. If you notice that you are being pushed, apply rudder in that direction. For example, if you find that you are being pushed right of the runway, apply right rudder. You can learn more on Doofer's video about crosswind landings.
Thanks for the reply. Appreciate the guidance.

Yeah it's always great to return to GA every now and then and hand fly some of these aircraft, helps keep your skills sharp!
Beautiful landing :) Just curious, this was VFR landing right? Or did you use ILS? Thank you.
Yeah this is VFR flying :)
