    Picks - I drill holes in my picks so they won't get away on stage. I drill three along the top and two in the center. Metronome - recommend a real free standing metronome so if you are looking at song lists/lyrics/etc on your phone, you still have your click beat. Straps - If you have anything but a cheap guitar, I recommend strap locks. Nothing like dropping a $4,500 guitar on stage (I learned the hard way) because the strap button hole is worn out.

      How do the holes help ?

    • @bartmitcham9697
      @bartmitcham9697 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@3521rob It makes the surface rough and when your hands get sweaty the pick is not so slick that it will turn or pop out of your hand. It is particularly important under hot stage lights or busking outside in the summer.

      Practice Journal- I wouldn’t be a guitar player without my notebooks, my lesson notes. & ALL of the songs I’ve learned if my house were burning down (again 😅) I would literally grab my journal & my axes and be outta there. 😂 honest. My journal (I’m an 80’s baby but still need to take notes! No way we will remember EVERYTHING unless it’s written down or recorded in some way. It’s easier than video. I tried that method. It’s too time consuming than jotting down a few notes on paper. Love ya LB!!!!! 💯

      If you’re looking to play electric, don’t buy a guitar w no amp. Cant hear yourself like you NEED to hear yourself. I started on electric, and I still play it, but AFTER learning to play the acoustic guitar as well, bc THEN I could really HEAR MYSELF and how I sounded. @ the very least invest in the headphones & wireless pickup (which costs more than a portable amp) you’ve GOTTA be able to hear yourself and clearly. It’s impossible on electric without an amp. For a reason. 😅 it’s electric!?! lol so please let me learning “the hard way” HELP someone out there learning or thinking of trying it without a plug? Don’t do it. You’ll regret it. I learned ALL my chords silently like that, but I didn’t actually learn how to PLAY them (& it hurt my strumming abilities as well not being able to hear the chords and the strum at once) they literally sell “packs” with a fender electric, the small baby amp, a “gig bag” which’s a soft case (book bag for your guitar basically) picks, cords EVERYTHING you need including a DVD and a book of tablature for 250$ on Amazon. It’s genuine fender. With a genuine fender amp and comes with a year of free lessons on the fender app. I myself don’t own a fender, my kid does tho, and they’re GR8 little guitars. The Gretsch I own is not a hollow body that mug must be 20 pounds or real close to it. 😂 It’s the newer Broadtron/Humbucker edition and it’s a great investment for those looking for something that’s going to have more “sound options” and just beautiful guitar. It’s definitely a “meat & potatoes” kinda axe. Which’s what I LOVE about it. I also have the Gibson “Flying V” and that’s always going to be my favorite guitar. So EZ to weild (move around, and move around w it on your body) again not a hollow body but sound is phenomenal. Lastly my acoustic guitar is a Washburn and it’s literally changed my whole outlook on acoustic guitars. It’s a winner for SURE!?! (& LBs right you’re going to pop strings and you’re going to loose picks find em in washing machine, on the patio?? 😂 literally EVERY where but when you need one. I keep several “spares” IN my practice journal. You can find those notebooks with the little hidden “pocket” inside? That’s where my picks go so IF I drop one (which’s happened like maybe twice) I can just grab another one out of my book that’s already in front of me. ❤hope this helps someone out there who wants to begin learning! I use the EXACT same brand of strings. They’re better for the planet made from recycled materials and recycled when sent in you accrew reward points for FREE STRINGS and other gear. I love that company! Rock and Roll 🤘

    Although Ive been on this journey for 3 years now i always enjoy dipping in to your beginner videos. Very good point about the Les Paul, i had an Epiphone LP, as soon as I started trying to play standing up I realised the LP wasn't an option, it was so heavy. I traded it in for a Telecaster, still heavier than a semi hollow but nothing like the Epi. Even the shop owner i part exchanged the LP with commented on how heavy it was. I also got a great padded strap from Amazon. I was 70 last November and played 3 songs with the band at my party (hence learning to play standing). Always find something of use whenever I watch you. Keep putting it out there. Oh yeah how about a tutorial for Jon Secada's Just another day 👍

    Great advice about the picks. I only use Dunlop Tortex 0,5mm, 0,6mm & 0,7mm, depending upon what song I am playing & which guitar I am playing. 🌹

    My favorite pick is a shark fin. It has a standard picking point but also, if you flip it around, a very tiny picking point.
    As for the tuning tool, be very careful with the lcd screen. I am on my second because I picked up my first one with my thumb on the screen (not much pressure, just normal) and knackered it. It still turns green on the right note but I can no longer see which note.

    Well Lauren, this may seem an out of place comment. But I have been deeply saddened by the sudden demise of my maternal uncle this past Thursday night. 02.01.24.
    Lauren, I so admire you and have a sort of soulful connection with you that this afternoon, Sunday 02.04
    .2024, when we were done with the rituals post the demise, and were off to our respective homes, This pain of the sudden loss started aching me and this video of yours made me feel comfortable enough to grab a quick nap.
    Lauren, your lessons are valuable but the connection that I made a mention of is invaluable.
    Again Lauren, this might feel an out of place comment, some may even make a laugh out of it, but yes, I attest that your mere presence on a cellphone screen made me feel comfortable.
    Thank you for being there, lots of love and regards to you. May Allah bless you. ❤

    Being going for awhile now but still some good tips in there, just pulled out a pad 'cause your tip on a journal, great idea, sometimes I make same mistakes and get frustrated and I see your point. If I have the journal I can look back and see where I am and if I don't forget to enter should have a notes on how I did it before. Also strugglin' a bit with chord changes as things getting faster so going to download a metronome to keep track and as you said, actually see what progress has been made. Luv ya help Kiddo, have a great day❤.

    Lauren do you use different thicknesses or flexible plectrums.
    I was thinking I should use a thin 0.3 mm whilst strumming
    Thoughts please !

    • @LaurenBateman
      @LaurenBateman  5 месяцев назад +1

      I use .77mm for strumming and I like a slightly thicker pick .88mm for picking.

    Just checked the Fender Tuner App I have installed (free version) excellent tuner by the way, doesn't hurt to have a back up on your phone (you know, flat batteries, forgot to charge/grab it etc.). But the cool bit is it also has a very easy and good metronome with an adjustable speedo.

  • @stephenkimball1732

    I am looking for the importance of immediate feedback from others and the tool that shows how quickly I'm playing and then use the metronome to set my optimum tempo.

      Very much so. Heat, cold, humidity, dryness. Because the neck is wood it will expand/contract as it does the strings tighten/ slacken and consequently strings go out of tune

    Beginners shouldn't avoid learning how to adjust their grip by using flimsy picks. It's just a pointless crutch at the start.
