- The JX2 Jessmuk (designed by me, built by LT Wright) is now shipping to those who bought the first run. I haven't touched it since I had the prototype, so I'm out getting reacquainted.

Great review on the Jessmuk. The only comment I would make is that I think you are diverting from the original intent of your channel. L T Wright knives are awesome and pathfinder gear is unmatched, but these brands are not for the guy just starting out in bush crafting. I have been following your channel for a couple of years now and to be honest your beginning to lose me when you review $150.00 to $200.00 gear which I have no use for and can't afford.

finally got one...been using the hell out of it since I got it. prepping wood, food, cutting down boxes, starting ferro fires....man, I'm stopping at surgery on living things....I love this knife!!!
Congrats Chris. Always liked how you don't follow the herd and, if anything, fight it. The world needs more free thinking people. This design really looks effective. You are getting more actual cutting edge for a given blade length for one and the belly naturally penetrates due to less immediate surface area. I liked how you showed how effective the rocking otion is.
The way it sticks out below the handle makes it a better food processor also.
This is a design that will take off. I would be pretty proud of it.
It's 5"of cutting edge in a 4.5" long blade.
Wow Chris you did not skimp on anything in design or materials eg. 01 steel and a Scandi grind .... the sheath also matches the quality of the knife . Bravo !
Hi youtubeur, I just ordered one that should arrive next week. I find this tool incredibly beautiful. I do not intend to use it, it will join my collection and will be a superb jewel in my exhibition cabinet. Just got my Jessmuk today, and I wanted to let you know how great of a design you made! The grip is like my GNS, which is super comfy. Everything about this knife is effective, and I love how it handles. Thanks Chris, you rock!
Again... Great review. I love big belly knives. Always have. They just feel right and slice better in my hands. For me the ergonomics leaves my hands less tired and worked. thanks again for your reviews. RUclips has saved me a lot of trial and error money. Your channel is one of my goto channels especially for knives.
Craig Hudson I'm waiting for someone to twist my words at the end and say that I said everyone is going to copy my knife. I'm saying I believe knives with more belly than straight edge are going to make a resurgence for utilitarian bushcraft knives. Can you imagine a Mora with a belly?? It would be insane. CRKT has a bush crafter with a belly I want to try. I just think it works better.
But I stop with the belly-knives at about this size. Beyond that, I'm more traditional. I have a custom from LT that will be done soon that is a 7" blade like what I try to mod my BK7s into and without the combat knife stuff like a upper false edge.
I love this design Chris. I will more than likely be getting one. I make my own knives for a living so I don't say that much. Great job.
Its worth mentioning that though Mors Kochanski did say the belly of the blade looked more suited for skinning than working wood when I showed him the pictures, he DID have positive things to say about the Jessmuk.
Mors requires a continuously curved blade on a good bushcraft knife, which the Jessmuk has to the max, so he loved that. He also loved the scandi grind, which is a must have for him. Being able to strike a ferro rod? Check!.
Without me actually having the knife there to give him to hold and use, there's no way he could comment on handle comfort, which reviewers of the knife have been very positive about.
I'm currently tracking my Jessmuk in the mail. Can't wait to get it.
Bushcraft Canuck I wanted to get one in his hand. He's not easy to contact directly. Not even for a video, I'd just like to hear his option using it. Thanks for showing him the pics! That's about as close as I could expect. Of course...you are Mors-trained, and you'll have yours in a week and a half.

Nice design Chris. Its great to see something different in a bushcraft design. I was getting a little tired of the classic design. I know they work but its nice to have some variety and innovation. I look forward to getting a JX2 of my own. Best of luck with it and keep up the great Vids !

Chris, you finally talked me into it, received mine in 3v last week. You designed a great fixed blade knife. Right on......works and does what it has to do, fantastically. ..
Ray Mears uses both these techniques at the same time (as in for the same stick) and throws in a third one. I try to emulate it in my video called 'feather sticks explained' and it works very well when you combine the tip-up, straight and tip-down methods.
I'll look it up when I get home.

LT has made the handle look nice. My allrounder is the Bk5, it has nearly twice the cutting edge of a 4-5 inch blade knife, slices, dices and carves like a bushcraft knife and can do light chopping. It's a kitchen knife raised by survival knives- or wolves.
Yo Adrian I could maybe go for the BK15, but the 5 just seems too big for me for that style. Hell of a slicer.

looks good I like 1/8 to 5/32 the best for carving tasks they have much more gooder dexterity than the thicker knives! that was a bushcraft term you can use it if you want lol! I was trying to carve a wood cork for fishing while I was deerhunting last year just to pass the time and I found out real quick that my schf38 had half the dexterity that my bk9 had that extra 1/16 made a huge difference in the knifes ability to get the job done
The JX2 Jessmuk looks to be a good knife, Chris Tanner. I like the design especially with its large belly. Seeing it now for the second time what comes to mind is the Canadian knife I've seen offered by Bark River; or, rather, elements of the Canadian knife. I enjoyed the video.

That's a whole lot of belly on that blade to keep sharp in the field!
This blade seems to be similar to my Chris Caine companion knife. I love mine.
So far so good, looks promising. Would like to see you do some camp crafting with it ala Dave Canterbury style as well as fishing/hunting chores. Also interested in how it fares in wet environments where handling is more crucial. Wouldn't mind testing it out myself.

George Washington Sears or Nessmuk, was the original designer of a Knife using the huge Roach belly, Yours is a deeper roach belly than his, I like that Deep sweep myself, I think it will be a great all around woods knife. Great Design Idea Chris.
that's because the belly is from an ULU knife. Mine is almost kinda be considered a double-belly, since there are two sides to it.

That's the way I like to feather stick to your not alone, my favorite feathersticken blade is the Schf42 that thing is amazing.
This is awesome. Looks like something I would make. Good choice of steel and handle, but I'm surprised you don't have a choil in the blade but it looks like you can still get a good choke on it. Nice knife, Chris.

ive always liked a belly in my knives. been looking at making something like this but looks like i'll be buying one of these too.
Yeah im liking the curves on this thing for sure. I noticed some people talkin a little smack, who cares. Im actually building some knives myself, and i really enjoy my Rat 3. But one of my builds is (for me) an improved upon version of the Rat3. And ive made the blade taller from spine to edge, and i didnt make it any longer. So, obviously its ending up with a much more drastic curve up to the tip. Not even fully completed with the fine touches yet, but everyone who lays eyes on this thing has quite a reaction, and theyr even more blown away when i tell them i made it from scratch. So all you jealous people out there, grow up would ya, go get yourself a JX2 Jessmuk and be merry
I will be ordering this knife within two months, awesome friggin knife.
Personally, not the biggest fan of PM101....so why am I starting by saying such? Because I have several LT Wright knives, including Genesis Scandi, Genesis Sabre, Bushcrafter, and NOW the Jessmuk by Mr Tanner. I absolutely love the knife. It's an ugly work horse that simply gets the job done. So I've not based my personal opinion of the knife because I am an avid PM101 fan, but rather because the knife is a win. There is a slight learning curve to using it, but very quickly has become my primary carry knife, with a Mora Classic #1 as my smaller backup. Great job Chris on thinking outside the predictable knife box. Two thumbs up from this guy.

I've seen that. I want to try it. The blade on it is the closest I've seen to mine. If it's good, it might be a good alternative for people on a stricter budget.

Lukes Bushcraft Watch the videos I referenced in the beginning. None of those guys were sold before either. One ended up saying he liked it more than his Skookum Bush Tool, another said he liked it just as much.

$195 wo sheath, $235 with. About two weeks (-ish) another pre order will be about ready. After that, it should be a regularly offered knife.

Some people say it is not good trying to reinvent the knife and that this blade form doesn't work as fine as the usual blade form for bushcraft. What do you tell those guys?
I ask, cause i am gonna buy my first bushcraft knife and doesn't really know if i should get this one. i like the look, but i am not that experienced.

Chris...I was browsing the below comments quickly and some crazy dude named James Pablos, who appears to be married to a small white dog, brings up an accidentally interesting point. The Condor Nessmuk does have obvious similarities and is surely one of the closest knives out there to this new Jessmuk. The Jessmuk's belly is even more radical though, the spine is very different of course, and the Jessmuk's handle is more rounded & far more sophisticated. With that said, if you look at the two knives side by side, the similarity is obvious if not striking. Chris designed his blade off of another knife all together anyhow...so ya, interesting point raised by the crazy guy in a loving relationship with a small white dog, but phrased in a dickish manner...as one might expect from a crazy guy in a loving relationship with a small white dog. I love this knife Chris - great design!
+scott sherman I don't think so at all. There are dozens and dozens of variations on a Nessmuk. I think the CRKT Bushcrafter looks even closer. But when you are a knife designer and someone that handles a LOT of knives, general similarities don't account for much. There are blades with sweeping edges. There are blades with Nessmuk humps. The Nessmuk and CBK are such old designs that there are hundreds and hundreds of knives that resemble them. Same with other bushcraft staples, like the Kephart and French Trade Knife. Every time detail counts as a difference. That's why a knife has to be like 6% different or less before another company can sue. All knives resemble other knives in some way.
Aside some the VERY specific blade sweep, another key feature of the Jessmuk is the sharp drop point is specific in order to give a straight, sharp point exactly centerline to the knife body...something I haven't seen.
It's been brought up countless times in the past week, especially regarding the TOPS SXB and the Tom Brown Tracker. A lot of people look at the SXB and they just see a big Tracker. Doesn't matter how different they are, that's what they see. Hell, anytime Schrade releases ANYTHING, people say "That looks like ______". There are only so many ways to make a knife. They are all going to somewhat resemble another. But the Condor Nessmuk and the LT Jessmuk?? Not even close in my world.
+PREPAREDMIND101 I think this is a case of us agreeing and not realizing it. I get that you're hyper sensitive about people saying the Jessmuk is "just like" this or that knife, I would be too...it's tough to come up with an original idea in the knife world, and you've done just that, and it's going to require you battling the ill-informed who claim that it's a copy of their favorite knife....that's why I specifically called out some of the biggest differences and just tried to convey a general "similarity" between the two, because when you put the two knives together, they undeniably look more alike than the vast majority of other knives out there....that's all I was saying....and that point was only worth making at all because I got to point out the insane picture that James P. uses! So ya, I'm in total agreement with your defense of the Jessmuk as an original and quite different design than anything out there....or at least anything I've seen, and obviously anything you've seen, as you've stated multiple times. Songs are the same way...experts get together before and during a lawsuit to decide if song A is enough like song B for some old has-been to get some cash from a new artist....and again, I completely agree with you that the Jessmuk would stand up to the legal or otherwise scrutiny of originality. I'm with you bro....but I'm not with James, not until he can explain that picture to me.

I've never heard of O1 tool steel. Is it a carbon steel or stainless steel? And how does it compare to steels like 1095, 5160 or L6? We all know L6 is a super tough steel.
carbon. some say better than 1095. been used in bushcraft knives a long time.
