- This is a quick look at the very excellent Daniel Smith - Alvaro Castagnet Master watercolor set featuring ten brilliant colors. Alvaro Castagnet is a master watercolor painter whose devoted his life to the craft. He got together with he good people at Daniel Smith and put together this spectacular set. That bit at the end about learning art is great. I took a painting class once and the teacher summed it up as "allow for failure, but dont stand for it". Art and fear are two sides of a coin and if you let fear - fear of "messing up" or failure - stop you, you wont get anywhere. And that kind of thing is easy to say, but hard to swallow.

Great. Thanks for sharing. Alvaro is a legend. Love his style. Neutral tint is awesome, as you say, you can add to get more punch in shadows, for example. DS are great paint.
I have to say that what you said in the video about investing in learning/doing art everyday is so very true. I'm seeing proof of that in my art work from the stuff I did months ago to now, there is a difference as I learn more and better and from my mistakes (I don't see failures the same as others do) I improve. Failures are our way of learning that's why they're not really failures, it's growing from what was to the possibilities of what can be!

For sure, you should try out the neutral, it's pretty cool as way to mix for toned shadows or just to get darker colors without going too dark.

The first fine tube paint set purchased. I still have the colors on my main palette. I use the viridian green to mix other greens. I did add a hansa yellow light and a magenta red to aid in mixing. I use DS Neutral tint, but I also love M Graham neutral tint which has a violet hint.
The M Graham neutral tint is also a nice one.

+Eric Sareyka I use an Isabey natural squirrel hair brush (mop brush) and I love it. Although it is very, very expensive. Then again, so are cheap brushes in the long run. - Marty

I loved this review, especially the final talk about becoming a better artist :) I just saw this set on Jackson's Art and they are offering the 238 dot chart as a bonus. I was thinking of getting myself that dot chart for Christmas. Now I have to look up this

You are so right. What a great review of this dynamic set.
Practice and failure is the only way to succeed in watercolor or life. You can learn about the tools such as paper quality, pigment quality, mastering the wetness of your paper, washes, composition, value and tone, THEN you see an artist like Alvaro find his own path to perfection.
I recently snagged this set for $30 and am using it for a trip to Alaska this fall. I'll be balancing out the colors (since I have room for 15 colors in my palette).
I'm adding a cool yellow (Hansa Yellow Light), a cooler blue (Phthalo Blue GS), a cool red (Quin Magenta, since it also is the color of fireweed which I love to paint), Deep Sap Green & Serpentine Genuine. I'm thinking of switching out the Varidian (which isn't a favorite green of mine).
What would you suggest I replace that last color with???? Inquiring minds, and all that. LOL
It's totally your preference, but I like ochre.

Oh Thank-you so much! I was practicing today, I did a little better but I don't feel confident enough to color in the drawing I did for my niece, it took me a while to get the drawing right so I don't want to ruin it by not being ready to color it properly. ***I think you may have mislabeled the reds @3 mins. The color next to the Maya Red may be Pyrrole Red and the Pyrrole Red at the bottom left would be Deep Scarlet. If that's the case, you might wanna make a note of it somewhere.

Would you recommend these over hydrus? And are Daniel smith better than Winsor and Newton artist grade paints?
+halowolf The Hydrus are very different and almost belong in their own category. Daniel Smith are superior to Winsor & Newton Astist grade paints in my opinion. Winsor & Newton are still great though, just not as good as Daniel Smith. - Marty

Which ones do you like more: Schmincke (Horadam) or Daniel Smith watercolors?
+Art Nya Schmincke and DS are both VERY awesome and I love them for different reasons. The colors in Schmincke are spectacular and I use them even day. The colors in DS are also outstanding and I use them a lot for finished work. If you forced me to pick I might say Schmincke one day and Daniel Smith the next. :-) - Marty

Truth!! There are no ways to learn stuff faster. LOTS OF PRACTICE. So many people always saying that I'm so clever when they see my art. I'm not clever, I always tell them, I just like doing it enough to put in almost two decades drawing. Lol.

I currently have most of Sennellier & QOR... Would you recommend getting Daniel Smith? I know they have 2 to 3 tines the colors as the other two companies... I do get major discounts so that's not what's important; I do want the best options for my journey... If there were shortcuts the goal would not be the gift that it is now!! These days there are no true watercolor artists like Turner.. today we have quantity, but 0 quality. Where the spirit doesn't lead the hand there is no art.
Does the burnt sienna light compare to a raw sienna?
Hi Lori - They are bit different. As the "light" would indicate you will get a bit lighter color. I wouldn't spend money on the "Light" though, instead, just add a little more water and you'll get the same effect in my experience. Thanks for the question! ~marty

Hey Marty!I'm a young artist and I particularly enjoy watching your videos about watercolor reviews. They're quite informative and I like how you compare the product to all the other brands you've tried out before.
I have a question regarding watercolors. I've been thinking of investing on an artist quality set, but the brands available in my country
(the Philippines) are Daniel Smith, Sennelier, Winsor and Newton, Rembrandt, Mission Mijello, and QoR. I have tried a couple of Holbein tubes but I didn't enjoy them mainly because they aren't as active whenever I do wet-on-wet.
Since you have tried most of the paints I've mentioned, I would like your opinion on the selection. I want something that is very vibrant, but I also don't want it to look too artificial. (If that makes sense) I'm quite young so I don't have the money to go out and try all the brands I've mentioned. Plus most of these are only available online here. I really look forward to hearing from you and your thoughts about this.

+Nicole J Thank you very much for the kind comments and the great question. Of the paints you mentioned, I would first go with Daniel Smith, they are both vibrant, but not over the top vibrant. Second choice would be Sennelier. Sean's are made with honey and they're luminous and beautiful. I think you'll love either of those. And both work well wet on wet. I hope this helps. Thank you! Cool fun fact. If you go to the Seattle store, I was lucky enough to visit when my sister was living in seattle, the people in the factory and store can answer any question you have. I got to meet dinnertime from the factory and have S picture of the store and factory. The factory is right next to the store.

Ok thanks, I'm still looking! My FC Polychromos came today, I tried them out right away and they lay down very smooth like butter, but I had a difficult time trying to blend and build the colors, I bought the 60 count. Would you consider doing a tutorial on how to do this? I've been looking for any good ones on YT and they are not really how-to videos, just the fast speed through kind. Try to keep in mind that your base pallete will be different than someone else's based on your style and how you perceive color and the colors that appeal to you
If Alvaro is in his 50s now it took him well over 10-20 years of WORK. I am an aspiring PAINTER not "artist", I have talent etc but even for me it can take days to "get" inspiration and the truth is you dont get inspiration you create it. I am not a plen air painter like Alvaro I dont draw or paint stuff from reality most often but it takes WORK to get inspiration too. It doesnt come with talent...

I can't remember where I heard it, but some study was done that determined that you need to practice for at least 10,000 hours to gain some mastery over a skill.
