I turned to my 51 year-old husband and asked how often does he think of Rome and I got a five minute lecture of how they built the roads and the new discoveries just made concerning the roads so…this sh*t is real people. (Then he gave a short list of other things about Rome one could meditate upon and stopped so he could continue watching tv. I love this man.) 🍻🤘🏼💕
Hasn't that already been bebunked twice now? The Roman empire comparison was an idea in a couple books YEARS ago. Then the idea got reignited in trump era, but it got debunked multiple times by now. It's fear-mongering that uses false information and narratives. Sometimes you have to come to terms one day that the far right is also as disgusting as the far left. Albeit, Ben is more center right than anything. Still, he perpetuates that very false Roman empire comparison.
And this is why men are the leaders of society. We find it genuinely fascinating how an entire civilization can be ran with such strength AND morality.

I’m a woman who has been thinking about the Roman Empire all my life on a regular basis. Many times a week if not daily. The fact they just recently figured out the reason for the longevity and strength of their phenomenal concrete has had me going for the past couple of months. I completely understand why men think on this. The many vast subjects to consider and reflect upon are a gold mine. Ben is correct however, there are so many other Empires to salt and pepper your Roman with.

OMG! ME TOO! Once I heard about their amazing concrete and how they have not been able to replicate it, I thought about it a lot! I read a recent study though and it looks like they may have figured it out! Cool as hell, concrete that self-repairs when it gets wet? 😳😳😳 Roman concrete cracks as frequently as modern concrete, but when it gets wet and excretes a bonding agent that repairs to crack and makes that part of the concrete even stronger than the rest! It's amazing and even more so that with only three dry ingredients plus water, combined with heat, and they still couldn't figure out how to replicate it for so long. 😂😂😂

@@jomidiam The original name was the "Sacrum Imperium Romanum", which for one sacred has a different meaning to holy, but we got the name from german where they didn't have the distinction, the german "heiliges" (holy) meant the same as the latin "sacrum", in english there's a lot of french/latin influence so we did have the distinction between or germanic holy and our french/latin sacred. It was Sacred because it was proclaimed by the pope not because it was particularly divine or anything. Secondly it was an empire, whether you go by the definition of it being many states under one supreme rule (an emperor) or a country that rules over many cultures, which it did as the germans back then were no where near as unified culturally as they are today, plus it also had french and italian populations and czech, polish and other slavic populations. As for the "Roman" part, it was as roman as anywhere else that claimed to be Roman, because it wasn't about culture, the culture had long since been dead. No one could claim to be truly Roman, except for people still living in the city of Rome, but even then those people were nothing like the Romans from just a few hundred years back. As a woman I think about the Roman Empire frequently. During my teaching years I used the Roman Arch in perspective drawing lessons and used it as a springboard to pepper that week with Roman Empire history, architecture and technological advancements. I don't always think about the Roman Empire. But when I do, it's in the context of how long it takes to build something, how much blood and gold it takes to build it and maintain, how it's always under pressure from forces both internal and external, how it can splinter under that pressure and collapse far more quickly than it was built.

The pope actually crowned Charlemagne as emperor of the romans and many historians believe it was a total surprise (though this is debated).
Even though the Roman Empire was still around and outlasted Charlemagne's Empire.

I go through phases of spending a lot of time thinking about the fall of the Roman Empire. I'm British and we had a very bad time after the Romans left. It took a long time to get back to Roman Empire levels of civilization after they left. For years as a kid I couldn't get my head around how advanced the Romans were.
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
@@teebob21 yes apart from all of those things it was the not being continuously raided and invaded by barbarians that probably also made life in Britain better during the Roman period compared to the centuries that followed.

I don't always think about the Roman Empire. But when I do, it's in the context of how long it takes to build something, how much blood and gold it takes to build it and maintain, how it's always under pressure from forces both internal and external, how it can splinter under that pressure and collapse far more quickly than it was built.
