Congratulations on your achievements! When it comes to remote id, I plan on going with the cheapest one I can, even if the module only broadcasts 100 ft, bare minimum for compliance.
Nice video. I’m a fixed wing flyer and even though I have an e-flite remote ID I just got one of these. Plugging the e-flight one into the receiver works fine but sometimes I like to bring more than one model to the field, and some airplanes don’t have easy access once assembled. This little thing with its own battery should be quite handy. Not sure about the whole remote ID thing. Might make casual drone buyers think twice, but someone intent on doing bad things is going to home build and not comply with the remote ID law either.
You're right, it will likely deter some people, in addition to the new "DJI ban" going through Congress right now. I'm honestly not sure how the FAA can/will enforce RID though. It's no big deal to me as most of my drones already have RID built in, but I'm glad to have this module for when I'm flying something that doesn't.
Hopefully some sensibility will prevail on the DJI thing. I’m in the opposite situation in that I mainly have giant gas airplanes that do not have rfid, but I mainly fly in FRIA areas where remote ID is not required. But I want a module for those times I fly outdid if an approved RC field. Yeah, I’d also guess it unlikely a person would get caught, but I am also a follow the law kinda guy.
Man, save me!! Could you please indicate me specifically in which part of the Mavic Air 1 (the original) did you attach it? I own a Mavic Air 1 and i am about to buy one module too. But i am not sure where to put it in order not to block Gps and other parts so the drone can work correctly. I would appreciate your help, please!!! I cannot buy a new drone so i want to revive my legendary Mavic Air!! Thank you very much in advance!!
My friend could you please indicate me in which part of the Spark did you attach it? I own a Mavic Air 1 (which was a bit similar in terms if body with Spark) and i am about to buy one module too. But i am not sure where to put in order not to block Gps and other parts. I would appreciate your help!!
I'm sitting here with my brand new HolyStone ID module with phone in non-airplane mode, on bluetooth is on, and app open. 2 lights on the module lit up. App sees nothing. Tried multiple times. What am I missing? Thanks!
Thanks for the review, wish I saw this ealier, bought two from E-flite for $99. This is all self contained and no extra soldering for power plug like the E-flite modules require. Gonna use this on my Potensic Atom.
You bet. You really don't need one for the Atom unless you're flying part 107 since it's sub-250 grams. If you're flying recreationally, you don't need it.
Remote ID is looming here in the UK. Probably won't be quite the same as the US but thanks for showing us what we may end up with. I will be going with the cheapest thing available once we go down that route !
Interesting video. I appreciate it and have an experiment suggestion. From anywhere power on the holystone with app forced closed on your phone. Drive somewhere else. Launch the app and see if the app knows where you first powered on the hardware.
To get your FAA ID you will need to take and pass a 4 part test. I am building a large quad and in addition to everything else I need to get a Ham Technician license because my video transmitter can out 1 watt of power.
Great video! Thank you for the clear explanation! It's funny that the Drone Scanner App can only track an SUAS to 500 feet. I guess the Official (FAA or local Law enforcement) will pretty much have to be right near you to track your drone? I am a 107 Pilot and will be fully compliant with Remote ID.
I just wouldn't be surprised if there's tech available to the gov't that exceeds what's available to consumers. Not a stretch by any means. But....I tend to believe that the FAA has some much bigger fish to fry right now considering their shortage of air traffic controllers and huge swath of impending retirements, the airline maintenance concerns, etc.
New tosay to you channel. Very interesting info on the RID. I fly back of my house, the field i go to is FAA approved, but the members hate helicopters, only 3 of 75 people have them. So ill be leaving the membership in July. Ill check out the RID, but really like dronetag one you showed. Whats you thought on the money end of each????😊
I think the Holystone is the one to get if you’re trying to be economical. It works fine and actually FAA approved. Dronetag has a cool app and smaller form factor, but not sure that’s worth the extra money.
Thanks, easy to follow. QUESTION - I forgot to write down the remote ID number. I need it to go into the FAA Drone Zone website to update my registration information with the remote ID number. Is there a way to see this in the Drone Go2 app?
Yep, when you connect the device to the app when it recognizes it you'll see the remote ID. Click on the number and you'll see all of the information you entered when you first setup the device.
Thank you for your value insight on the Holy Stone unit. As you suggested you were going to do, I entered my drone registration number as the operator ID. It shows on drone scanner as invalid data. Only way I have gotten rid of the invalid data is by using my full name. Was wondering how that worked out for you?
When I add this to the FAA site I listed it as for my Mavic drone. However, I fly RC planes as well. Once this is registered and I switch the module from my drone to me RC plane do I need to change a setting to do that, and do I have to add all of my planes to the FAA site? Thanks for the video.
My understanding is that only one module is required for hobbyists. For part 107 they want a unique module for each aircraft. Every drone over 249 grams has to be registered. I believe it’s only $5 for every drone of for recreational use. $5 per drone for part 107.
The serial number is the Remote ID and that auto-populates. If you want to add your registration number you can put that on the Operator ID line, but I don't think it's required based on what I've read: www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/remote_id.
The higher you fly the greater the range of the Remote ID transmitter. Tech specifications for Remote ID range # Broadcasting Direct Remote ID data through one of the mandatory technologies (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) is sufficient to comply with the regulations, even though both channels can be combined. Regarding general ranges, Wi-Fi offers a greater range, thanks to 10 times higher transmission power than Bluetooth (100mW vs. 10mW). The Wi-Fi Remote ID transmission can reach kilometers, but it also comes with some downsides; for example, Wi-Fi add-on modules are known for common issues with the interference of drones' internal hardware, which can use the same frequency channel Bluetooth technology used in Direct / Broadcast Remote ID is different than the one we all know from smartphones, headphones and speakers. Remote ID devices are equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which provides one-way communication only through broadcasting from the aircraft. Due to that, Bluetooth BLE is capable of transmitting a signal over a much greater distance than Standard Bluetooth, which reaches hundreds of meters range. Bluetooth BLE can reach up to 3 km (1.86 miles) in unobstructed outdoor conditions, as confirmed by multiple field tests.
Thanks for the great info. I'll do some more testing to find out why I was getting such limited range. I believe my iphone picks up BLE but maybe it's a setting I need to turn on.
Yea you'd have to change the specs each time, that's the only downside. There's no way to add multiple profiles. I'll send that as a suggestion to Holystone. Maybe they can make that a feature in a firmware update.
Just confirmed that you can only use the module with one drone at a time, so you will have to change the drone every time in the app. Doesn't sound like they plan on changing that.
It's kind of confusing, but I don't think it's the range of the signal from the module that's short, but rather the range of my phone to track it. I'll reach out to Holystone to find out though, I'm curious myself.
Welp, I just confirmed with Holystone that the broadcast range is actually 600-feet. But keep in mind, this is an FAA approved module so that must be all we need to comply.

Congratulations on your achievements! When it comes to remote id, I plan on going with the cheapest one I can, even if the module only broadcasts 100 ft, bare minimum for compliance.
Thanks Tommy, you watched until the end! This module is on the FAA approved list, so no issues there.
Thanks so much for the informational video on the Holystone RID device as I have one myself! Ohio Drone Pilot.
Thanks! I'm originally from Cleveland and will be visiting family soon. I'll definitely be doing some flying while I'm there.
Nice video. I’m a fixed wing flyer and even though I have an e-flite remote ID I just got one of these. Excellent video. Love the way you explain things clearly. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback, I definitely try to be thorough.
Thanks Gadget Inspector! I'm still flying the original Air and Mavic pro.
Wow, now that's impressive and I don't blame you. Still really good drones.
Man, save me!! Could you please indicate me specifically in which part of the Mavic Air 1 (the original) did you attach it? I own a Mavic Air 1 and i am about to buy one module too. I put one of those on my Spark a couple of weeks ago.
My man! Still flying the Spark! I like it. They don't build drones like that anymore. That thing is a little tank.
My friend could you please indicate me in which part of the Spark did you attach it? I own a Mavic Air 1 (which was a bit similar in terms if body with Spark) and i am about to buy one module too. @@alxkarabos I put it on top of the Spark, centered between the propellers so they wouldn't hit it.
Thank you very very much!!
Thank you for sharing this with us all. I'm glad there is a cheaper alternative out there finally.
You bet!

Glad I could help my drone buddies across the pond!

That's a good idea. I'll see if I can remember to try it.

30 bucks on Amazon.. what a steal .. only reason i got it because it was 30 and bot 80 or over
Appreciate the insights. I just got mine in the mail today and will be using with my Anafi.
Nice to hear someone else out there is still flying the Anafi.
Great review & setup video, thanks. Just ordered mine. Have a great day!
Excellent, enjoy! Great day to you as well!
Video was very helpful and convincing. I am ordering that module. Thanks a lot your number 1 on drones. Thanks much 👍

EDIT: Near your drone.
I have a suspicion that they have or will have devices capable of picking up these signals from much farther away.
Do you really believe the Secret Service is using phone apps to find aircraft information?
I just wouldn't be surprised if there's tech available to the gov't that exceeds what's available to consumers. Not a stretch by any means. Roku makes a $49 RID modual. Ordered one early this week.
Cool. I was expecting prices to come down even more.
I have one for my Evo 2 and my Mavic Air 1 great video bro😎👍🥶
So did you buy 2 for each drone or do you just switch one out between each?
Thank you for your value insight on the Holy Stone unit. As you suggested you were going to do, I entered my drone registration number as the operator ID. It shows on drone scanner as invalid data. Is the battery replaceable if it ever goes bad?
Nope.
What is the correct zize of the velcro for the holly stone module??...on amazon are 2 diferent (1"×2") or (2"×4")??
I went with the 1x2 and still needed to trim it a bit. I think 2x4 is too big...you'd be doing a lot of unnecessary trimming.
When setting up the Remote ID,what is it that goes on the ID line, the serial number of the remote?? ,my FAA registration number?
The serial number is the Remote ID and that auto-populates. If you want to add your registration number you can put that on the Operator ID line, but I don't think it's required based on what I've read: www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/remote_id.
Are people getting confused about the remote id scanner app versus the scanning ability of commercial devices? Comments welcome.
Thanks bro.
Hey thanks for watching!
How does it broadcast the pilot location?
It broadcasts takeoff location so maybe it's taking the altitude reading "zero" to determine that. I'm not sure.

When I read the comments all I see is 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑
Is this EASA compliant for Europe?
Sorry, I’m not familiar.
I have 2 drones, so every time i turn on the app i have to change the drone specs or is 1 module for each drone??

I get the reason for remote 🆔 but is too much information being shared with people of questionable intent.
When you comply you open the flood gate for more rules.............................
With all these Karen's and Ken's you have to comply .
Not true. What do you suggest?
When you don’t either can’t fly or you have to pay for not following them.
Ordered it but code didn’t work
Let me check with Holystone. It may have expired.
It’s no big deal ordered it anyway
I guess I'll begrudgingly purchase this one even though it's basically double what the lying ass FAA claimed these damned RID modules would cost.
And sadly this is probably the most inexpensive one available right now.
Range is stupid. Whats the point? This whole charade has been nothing but BS!
It's kind of confusing, but I don't think it's the range of the signal from the module that's short, but rather the range of my phone to track it. I'll reach out to Holystone to find out though, I'm curious myself.

Horizon canceled their remote id.
Oh ok
Anyone wasting money on this is out of their mind. Just ignore it and fly as always.
Whats even cheaper is not bending to dangerous tyrannical executive overreach and not using RID.
It's a pity you weren't confronted with a angry Karen or Darren just to prove how unsafe and stupid this remote ID💩💩 is
It remarkably has not happened to me yet, but I try to move stealthily when I fly lol.
Would have made for great content though! 🤣
You don’t need it. Hey FAA good luck
