Just for feed back, I agree with your interpretation of the remote ID regulations: Sub 250g (or 0.55lbs or less) drones flown recreationally don't require registration or RID while any drone less than 55lbs flown under Part 107 must be registered and have RID. Unregistered recreational drones still need to follow general safety guidelines of the sponsoring recreational organization that the particular recreational flyer has identified as their source of safety guidance.
Thanks Chris, the more info the better. I cover all that in the Remote ID video I referenced as well so I didn't go into everything again here. Keep the comments coming though, I love it!
Thanks for sharing your information with us. What’s interesting to me, is that DJI and Autel’s sub250g drones have built-in RID with no option to disable it in the app, so it broadcasts a signal whether one likes it or not. If the 250g weight limit falls under an “exemption” in the rules for recreational use (unless your flying under Part 107) then all of these drone companies MUST add an option for users to disable the RID function, this way recreational and professional pilots can easily choose to turn it On or Off depending on their flight operation scenario. If one wants to leave it on that’s fine but there needs to be some flexibility here.
I agree. The more I think about it though, this could just be a sort of loophole in the verbiage that the FAA will close. Time will tell, but adding the ability to turn RID off could be done through a firmware update.
@@GadgetInspector Yes, that’s what they (DJI and others) need to do. The future however doesn’t look good for both recreational or commercial pilots. A lot of things are happening behind closed doors that many people are not aware of or talking about when it comes to drones. It’s indeed very sad for the hobby.
FYI that 250 gram limit is “take off weight.” Anything added to the drone putting it over the weight limit, will then require drone registration. I think this was discussed in one of the Alien Drones FAA videos.
Great point. Kinda moot for this one though right since its 245 grams? Folks that own this one and only fly recreationally don't need to attach an RID module and therefore......right?
@@GadgetInspector potensic is releasing something to combat the remote id rule going in place. My guess is it’s their own module. Their email said “the remote id I need is expected to go on sale at the end of the month”
Probably not a bad idea to keep that on you until it arrives. Not sure how their org is structured, but seems like the FAA should have their hands full with this Boeing debacle. Not to mention the major shortage in air traffic controllers.
VERY INFORMATIVE and well done video -- THANKS! Question please: Is that a good location on the Potensic Atom, where it will not block any GPS reception? I know it may be a silly question, but I do not know where the GPS is located. Hopefully that is a good location for perfect balance, too (so front motors aren't effected much different than rear motors). I have just ordered the ATOM 3-Axis for occational 107 real estate use, so .... I know I need the remote ID (Grrrr not too happy about that - Oh well). Thanks again - Subscribed!
Hey there. That's actually a really good question. Holystone recommends mounting on top of the Potensic logo, so near the rear of the drone. I was looking to keep the center of gravity which is why I mounted mine where I did. I didn't have any issues, but it may be best to follow their recommendation.
@@GadgetInspectorThanks. That makes perfect sense. I'm guessing the GPS antenna is within the larger octagonal-shaped area of the body Top View. So, over the battery compartment would be good for the ID module.
All good points my friend. No need to say how I feel about RID, so I'll move on to tell you how well you wear those COWBOYS colors! GO COWBOYS! "HERE WE GO!" 🌟 🤩
So I have the mini 4 pro and was flying over a NC lake and dam, using the extended battery. I was in the middle of nowhere and a sheriff pulled up about 3 minutes after I landed and packed up. Nothing he could do, BUT, is there a way to avoid this exact type of attention? Or can I only avoid the Karens....
I bet that was just a coincidence to be honest. Sometimes they're more interested in the drone than anything. But I'm like you, I try to be as inconspicuous as possible. Otherwise, there's not much else you can do other than follow the FAA rules.
ONE more question, please. WHERE does the Atom App -- Potensic Pro -- get its Map? Talking about the one showing on the display -- it displays from some source other than Potensic I'm sure. I'm asking for VERY important reasons, but no one seems to know. That is, does the map displayed in the Potensic Pro App pair with Google Maps, or ... have its own data source, like a car dashboard GPS map???? In fairness, I have asked others and no one seems to know. The IMPORTANT reasons such curiosity are (1) Can you PRELOAD the map area the day before a planned flight (as my old DJI drone Litchi app allows, two different ways), and (2) must you be connected to data services when you are flying, or ONLY need to have your GPS turned on in your phone or tablet to see the map area? Thanks again!
@@GadgetInspectorGood news... Spoiler: It DOES seem to cache the map. Sorry, Long explanation coming up... Yesterday, I went onto the Potensic Pro app in my dining room. My phone was ONLY on the our home WiFi connection, no Data, while the aircraft was NOT energized (indeed, battery not even installed). I loaded the app -- which of course said "disconnected" but requested to obtain my location via the phone's GPS (older Pixel 4a with Andro 13). Did that -- which really couldn't acquire any satelites indoors -- then selected the Map of the World shown on the App display, and then zoomed in to my immediate area. Zoomed in-and-out and all around where the little scale bar showed anywhere from 200 feet to about 3000 feet. That's what I used to do in Litchi. I had it on the satellite view, not just streets. Okay. Then, I closed the app and turned off the phone's WiFi and GPS. THEN (the good part) went to a nearby field as normal with my new Atom (had already calibrated everything) and proceded as normal with the phone in Airplane mode and data off. App requested GPS location, so I did that. On the app display, BOOM - THERE WAS THE MAP in all its glory! Yea!!!! Hope it wasn't some kind of good glitch, but can't see how that could have happened. As to the source of the map overlay, now it doesn't matter. GAME CHANGER if not just a happy mistake. ======================= EDIT (a couple days later): More good news, and details. Just came back from outside and opening the App with only the phone's GPS On (Atom disconnected from battery and off/idle put away in the house, and no wifi or data connected on the phone), and it works -- Map is there in the App! I checked the App storage under phone Settings>Apps>Potensic Pro and read the following: Potensic Pro V5.6.0; App size 220 MB; User data 441 MB; Cache 6.49 MB; Total 668 MB. My particular phone has option to clear Storage and clear Cache. It is my guess that the 6.49 MB is the map? Bottom Line: It appears You CAN store your planned map area a day ahead of the flight. No doubt you must clear/replace your cache occassionally if you travel alot.

Great information! Thank you so much for showing this!
You got it Scotty, glad it was helpful.
Good video. Very helpful. Where would you mount it on your Anafi with limited, mostly curved surfaces?
Weight distribution is mostly in the back, so I mount it right above the Parrot logo because you're right, really nowhere else to put it.
That's what I'm thinking too. Now where do we mount a strobe for night flying -- on top of the Beacon???
