- Bryan Hitch has had a long career and one interesting aspect of it was how he made some adjustments to his work and became incredibly popular. Hitch is known for an incredible amount of detail, closeups of his characters, and widescreen action panels.
This episode breaks down his history, techniques, and focuses on his approach to costume design. A lot of his work on the comic The Ultimates was adapted into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

"OH, HI! You caught me...." Those intros are always gold.
I'm waiting for the "Oh, Hi... you caught me playing… with myself…" :D
I hope you can eventually do a video that highlights Bruce Timm.
I have no doubt that's on a list he has, but that's such a huge one to tackle.
Also Norm Breyfogle who's Batman designs influenced the Batman Animated series Timm worked on.
Bruce timm deserves this
He was an inker on the He-Man mini comics (another important entry point into the comic hobby for me I forget to mention). Usagi Yojimbo's Stan Sakai was their letterer.
"You caught me bein real with today's youth" XD
Putting on a mask is as real as it gets.
Some may even say, giving them the straight dick.
this style was Marvel's house style for a while. Photo realistic artists like Hitch, David Finch, Alex Maleev, John Cassaday defined the Marvel look from 2000-2008ish
Was it really a house style? I mean everybody was trying to be Jim Lee then right?
I don't recall Spider-Man from the early 2000's being realistic...they were John Romita lol.
@@Clay3613 whoever was drawing Spider-Man during civil war and back in black was using the cinematic style.
I did hate how he drew Peter Parker thought. His Spider-Man and Villains was great. But Peter Parker looked like an entirely different person. He looked way to old IMO. And too bulky.
@@mattsom3915 that was in the 90s. this is in like 2000s to 2010s, when marvel basically made the photo realistic art their representative style. I felt like, unlike DC, marvel has always followed the comic trends (which were hit or miss). in the 90s, when Image comics boomed into popularity, they literally hired every single free lance artists from Image, including Jim Lee and Liefeld and gave them their household stuff like Captain America or Fantastic Four to reboot them
@@themoofs6925during Civil War it was Ron Garney, but prior to that it was Mike Deodato in the main book.
Don't forget that Hitch works with Paul Neary the inker.
He is also very important to Hitch's artwork.
Credit must also be given to Paul Neary, Hitch’s long time inker, and comic vet
Alan Davis, a monster artist, has had a much larger influence than I ever thought he would when I was enjoying his artwork back in the day on Excalibur. You can see his fingerprints in a lot of artwork out there.
Love Hitch’s art. The Ultimates was my first introduction to the Avengers characters and I still prefer Ultimate version Iron Man suit and Ultimate Thor’s hammer. If only the Ultimate Universe wouldn’t have gone to hell...
Personally while I liked ultimates I still gotta admit this series had one small problem and that’s well all of the characters acted like complete and utter jerks.
They were trying to do Watchmen, but sometimes I would think that 1610 Universe was flipped one where heroes were villains and villains were heroes...
Ultron will always be my hero🤖🤖🤖
@@bobisconsumed520 yeah that's sort of true to a certain extent because not all of the heroes in the ultimate universe were jerks.
I feel like you have to see it as a W. Bush era book. When both parties are marching you to an unjust war on the back of "justice" and "democracy" it's hard to believe in hero's like Captain America.
Tevya Smolka guess ur right but Ultimate universe was place were all hope die. First even the heroes u think would be “nice” became warlords (kitty and Jean). Then their universe ended🤡🤡🤡. But with it back, hopefully we’ll get new stories. Oh and I forgot a consistently good character Miles. Mabey that’s why people grew on him, in a universe where Reed Richards becomes a mad man and a seemingly innocent girl named kitty becomes a secessionist warlord, Miles tried to hold on to what it met to be a “good person”
Bob is True also not to mentioned ultimate peter Parker aka ultimate Spider-Man ultimate Mary Jane ultimate aunt may and finally ultimate Gwen Stacy were good people too also so was ultimate spider woman Jessica drew who I really do miss so much :(
Holy shit...these intros are too magnificent lmao
I love this show. Been subbed for 2 years I think, your videos help me through my day. Thanks a lot!
I'm glad you liked my Cartoon! Now I gotta go read up on Death's Head!
Hitch’s art is the only reason I read The Ultimates. In fact, I think Millar owes a lot of his financial success to Hitch. It wasn’t the writing that did it.
Millar to Marvel editorial: "ok, so here's my idea for ultimate captain america. There's really only 1 thing that makes cap interesting. That is the fact that he's basically the exact opposite of what you'd expect him to be. If you told someone who has never read a comic before, "there is this superhero called captain america, who is a super soldier from ww2 and wears an american flag as his costume." That person would expect that character to think and act a certain way. What makes 616 cap interesting is that the way he actually thinks and acts is the exact opposite of what that person expects. My idea for ultimate cap... is to basically not do any of that. Instead of subverting those expectations like 616 cap does, we're gonna meet those expectations. We'll turn him into a nationalistic, jingoistic, right-wing guy who hates immigrants, is sorta kinda probably racist and says things like "america! Love it or leave it!" And calls french fries, freedom fries. I never understood why 616 cap was so liberal anyway. He's old, and to me, old means right-wing. I'm not gonna take the time to look up pre ww2 labor movements or the rise in very liberal almost dare I say socialist beliefs amongst working class americans during the depression. It's so much easier to just make him right-wing because I'm too lazy to learn what an FDR social democrat actually is."
Marvel editorial: "Uh, OK. Sure. Whatever."
Really want you to get up to 100k soon. You honestly make really really great content. I really appreciate your input from a bit more on an "industry" perspective. That is to say, talking more about the complexities of the art style, the writers, and highlighting some of the great creators, not just talking as much about specific characters. I kinda feel like your channel goes a lot more in-depth than similar channels on RUclips.
Could you talk about some forgotten artists like Tony De Zúñiga, Gerry Talaoc, Gil Kane, Sal Buscema, Irv Novick...?
Both Buscema brothers!
@@edfoster792 BOTH AMAZING God I miss them.
At long last The Ultimates Thanks Chris
I love how you used "ultimate" a lot of times in this video.
Have you done one of these on Kevin Knowlan? He's been one of my favorites and inspirations as an artist since the 80s. I think you can see a lot of his influence in the shading styles of Hughes and Hitch and especially Yanick Paquette. Anyways, love the channel!
Love the videos 🙌 have you ever thought about making a video on alex Ross artwork ?
him or even Travis Charest
Yesss Chris you gotta cover Alex Ross
He should use that to also analyze the excellent comic Marvels, which had Alex Ross as the artist.
About two days ago I made a tweet saying "The holy trilogy of RUclips comic book channels", and that day I didn't know you
But now I do, so I gotta say
You earned a spot there. Congratulations, and keep up the amazing work
Thanks for staying up late to edit this! This was also my favorite opening gag yet!
Another great video! The delays on Ultimates used to kill me but Bryan’s art made that series
Having read a lot of these books, I had been exposed to Hitch, but never paid attention to it---and I think that is to his credit. His work is great but doesn't call attention to itself. It simply immerses you in the story. A true illustrator. I am definitely going back to look at this work more closely. Thanks for the episode

Captain ComicTropes throws his mighty shield!
All those who oppose his shield must yield!
Frontbutt88 You think this “C” stands for Canada!?!
I had COMPLETELY forgotten about Hitch on Death's Head and She Hulk! Thanks, man!
I hadn't seen the connection between Hitch and Dsvis, but in context now and looking at art from The Authority (Ah! What a book!) it's staring me in the face.
He's truly a comic god.
His Fantastic Four run is second in my heart behind John Byrne's (Not Kirby? It's a calumny, but it's true!)
Jim Yeung's Young Justice work reminds me of what I like about Hitch's work. Nice balance between comicy & realism
I’ve been away from comics for about 20 years now until very recently, and I have to say I love Hitch’s art. It seems to me to be a huge step forward from the 90’s stuff that was my last exposure to comics. I’m just learning about him here and I’m now motivated to check out more of his stuff.
The MCU: Combining the look of the Ultimates with the heart of the 616 Avengers. Best of both worlds, really.
Totally expected today's intro to be "Oh hi! You caught me rising from the dead."
Great 👍🏾 videos as always. Would love to see you do a video on Arthur Adams.
Thank you for continuing the series with such well thought out examinations of the creative minds behind some of my favorite works. I greatly appreciate all of the hard work.
Awesome work Comic Tropes. Your videos are awesome, makes every Sunday something to look forward to.
One of the best episodes you've done. Love these artist critiques and hearing their career history.
Best intro yet! Great job as always.
One of your best episodes yet. Good job, my dude 👍
Great video as always! Every episode I learn something new about the books and artists.
This is your best episode yet! I love your focus on the people who actually make the comics
Congratulations, and thank you very much, Chris! Bryan Hitch blew my mind with his work in "The Authority", and then he did it again, in a bigger way, with The Ultimates Vols. 1 and 2. Your analysis on his techniques, and your commentaries on the development of his style, was top notch. Excelsior!!
Best regards from Chile
Great video Chris. Speaking of Hitch, I can't recommend enough the series he's been working on with writer Robert Venditti: Hawkman. The book is easily one of the best you'll find these days, with stellar art and an amazing story that cuts most of the confusion surrounding the character. I don't think it sells amazingly, even if it absolutely deserves it, so I really recommend to check it out to anyone who didn't.
I haven't even watched the whole video, but this is my favourite video you have done.
Thanks for the information of this great artist.
Wish you could do Jason fabok work that would be great?????
Love your videos Chris. Keep up the great work!
Even though I prefer simpler art styles, those expressions are amazing.
So are the action scenes.
I've only recently discovered you but considering you hit 50k around this video, it's awesome to see that your subscriber count has more than tripled. I hope everything is working out better financially.
Very well done and informative. I like Hitch as well and have his book that you mentioned. Thanks again.
Love your vids, Chris! Keep it up
Thanks for the Easter treat.
Love this show don't ever stop
Those introductions! I laugh eveytime and then you get all analytical and I learn stuff. Good vid, as usual.
Fan art was epic on this one nicely done
Chris you should talk about Travis Charest. Awesome video man
I have alot of Hitch covers.
Gotta go back to those Ultimates.
Thanks again for another great video!
You got my support from Puerto Rico🇵🇷
Great vid as usual . Thank you
I love the insane details of, Mr. Hitch and I love his epic storytelling skills! Every time I read his comics I feel like I need a bag of popcorn to go with it. If I were a comic book artist that would be the level of storytelling I would love to tell!
Excellent work!
Great video chris!!! I love it!!!
I love ultimates since I had a copy of it laying around the house when I was young and I read it over and over and over again
I really like ur vids man! I love how you really sounds passionate about thing you talk about.
- Love from Brazil!
Thanks for the video.
This next to the Greg Land video is a good case study of the dos and don'ts of photorealistic comic book art. Hitch's ability to look realistic and have a great panel-to-panel flow to his storytelling is really impressive.
Such impressive talent.
I loved the Ultimate line. I didn't read much ultimates admittedly but read the entireties ult x-men and spider-man and a good bit of f4. I was in elementary school when they launched it so it was awesome getting to see the beginning and end of a continuity while growing up. Bendis and Millar can produce some less than stellar and weird writing / narrative choices... but the art and action was always on point.
It's honestly one of my favorite art designs.
So good!
Yo, just wanted to say that as a reader of 40+ years, I really appreciate your enthusiasm and analysis. Have you any thoughts on colourists? Maybe a good video in that
I like this video on account of it being a quality, entertaining production
I just made my first fan art! Can't wait to see it on your wonderful channel.
I love your intros lol. my fav so far is when we caught you mourning a loved one.
those intro's are amazing
I love your videos dude!
one of the best artist out there !
it took me several views to finally subscribe to your channel.
You are doing god's work, sir.
Congrats on 50k subs
Hitch is amazing. Astro City #1 is a masterwork that has stayed with me and his stint on The Authority is one of my all time favorites. I was a big fan of Stormwatch when Ellis and Hitch took over and was blown away when they murdered that book and started up The Authority, but the journey was absolutely amazing. It's some of the best work Image ever published.
I wasn't aware of his older work even though I own some of it. He sure has matured and improved his style over the years. Amazing.
Agreed. Same can't be said about Mark Millar, unfortunately. 😕
Haha that start was great man
Love to see a video on Travis Charest!
I didn’t know about his work on Who and Trek!
Great video! A Frank Quitely review would be awesome.
I remember reading Hitch saying that his run on Stormwatch was his last go at making comics as he wanted to transition as a storyboard artist and he was planning on using those issues as portfolio pieces. Donno just how serious he was when saying that, but it makes a lot of sense in terms of his developing style.
your hoody reminds me of my fan art I made of you as captain america, that jack kirby homage
Your intros are great
Bryan currently working on a Batman project (rumoured to be with Warren) accidentally announced on Jonathan Ross's Chat Show (his collaborator on America's Got Powers) when he had Bryan present Samuel L Jackson with a Fury piece of art . . .
I believe for artwork for film/tv productions was for Doctor Who. Being British I’ve always loved British artists like Bryan Hitch and Alan Davies.
Chris in a captain America hood that's fairly accurate;
Is miles above levels of camp its amazing and I love it. Great vid btw.
Verisimilitude is an excellent word!
Hey, I'm a real fan cause I made it to the end!
Would love to see an episode on Cary Nord
The writing might be a little weird but the art in the Ultimates is like a gift from God.
he's in my top 10 all time fave comics artists along with
Kevin Maguire
John Romita Sr.
John Buscema
George Perez
Brian Bolland
Don Newton
Alan Davis
Travis Charest
&
Frank Cho
Amazing video, just one thing that come to mind. If he makes sure to emphasize his work to naturally have your eyes read from left to right; who hard is it to translate to markets that read right to left?
Hey man, I’d love it if you did a real in-depth Neal Adams episode. He’s my favourite!
Dude, your powers of observation and knowledge of art and comics is amazing. You should be a college professor teaching comic art and history (for real).
Hard agree about Hitch's influence on the MCU.
The widescreen aspect ratio should be used more because it mimics how the human eyes see. Our eyes are next to each other, not one above the other. That's the only reason why movies are arranged that way.
He used to live at the bottom of my street in Carlisle. He let me sit in with him whilst he worked, as we both had the same art teacher. A very friendly bloke.
Well Ultimate Spider-Man was what Insomniac Spider-Man Homecoming
Intro-inception!!!
Sorry to hear about Bill. :( Hope things work out.
Hey! Awesome vid as usual but the Action Force samples were of Geoff Senior's work, not Bryan Hitch, but I guess you were just showing examples of the comic itself right?
Really would love to see a video about Alex Maleev
