      Isn't that because transport in the US has been hijacked by the oil-lobby in the beginning of the 20th century?
      There was a lot of propaganda for other kinds of transport just after the steam train was developing to electric drive.

    My parents and I took a train trip from Milan to Geneva, then TGV from Geneva to Paris-Gare du Lyon way back in 1987. The Milan to Geneva section went through the Alps near Domodossola, skirted close to the Matterhorn, went along Lake Geneva, and was truly the most impressive rail trips I have ever been on. The TGV to Paris was an experience - the French did high speed very well even back then! - but it is almost too fast and sterile to truly be enjoyed. I was a kid but I remember the whole trip very clearly! It sure beats Amtrak's Northeast corridor for the sheer variety of scenery!

I tried to speak French but was treated poorly by the haughty waiter. He even refused to bring me the (French) menu, which I would've had no problem reading, I was forced to choose from only three items on an English menu.The waiter's surly attitude and the limited menu made the experience truly disappointing. I love TGV journeys. I have covered Paris to Strasbourg a couple of weeks after the LGV Est opened in 2007, I lived in Pau as an exchange student and did Paris to Pau and vice versa on numerous occasions. That journey is about an hour less than what it was in the late 90s when I lived there. The Eurostar of course, I have done in the late 90s between London and Paris Nord. I have done Paris Bordeaux, Paris To Lyon and Paris to Lille, Nantes to Paris. Superb trains. I like the duplexes.

    Keep up the good work Paul. I travelled by bullet train in China last year and compared to their first class TGV first class looks like Chinese economy class. First class trains in China has fully lie flat bed, distance between 2 seats are about 2 meters, free food & drink and at 300Kms per hour you wont even hear the outside noise or train noise. It feels like you are floating in the air thats how smooth it is. Fast trains and special trains in Europe but in China its almost everywhere - you will see a bullet train passing your bullet train once every few minutes.
    It would be good if you can do a review of a bullet trains in China once the corona virus issue is over.

    "InOui" is not a budget TGV service as you said but a premium service, with two classes. It's the new SNCF's name for TGV services. "InOui" is the name for the premium service (with a black, grey and red livery) and the low-cost service is named "Ouigo", with a single class (light blue livery).

So you also need nearly 6 hours to fly.

    • @petera7403
      @petera7403 3 года назад +3

      @@scotttild Scott- Our trains ARE slow, by modern standards. Amtrak's typical top speed is about 85 mph. That's slow, in this day and age, compared to Europe, regardless of the distances involved. There are several corridors in the United States that would benefit greatly from true high speed rail. High speed rail is not something that works if it's only done halfway. An example of halfway is the current Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington. Amtrak has spent decades making incremental improvements at huge expense that have yielded only slightly faster schedules, overall. In large part, halfway is because we have not been willing to step up to the plate and really revise things. If the NE Corridor were on a par with the European approach, there'd be grass growing at some of the airports. So, San Fransisco to LA? If it's done properly people will use it, and many more than you may imagine. And those passengers would go from downtown to downtown, without driving to the airport, parking, going to the terminal and going through security. Do you still think a one hour flight is one hour....?

      TGV Lyria is much like Thalys or Eurostar, daughter companies of SNCF and one or more other railway carriers which are distinct from SNCF proper, own management and policies included. The TGV to Italy was similar, I believe, until Trenitalia got out of the cooperation. It's since rum by SNCF alone.
