I recently travelled in Trenitalia from Paris to Lyon and return, and it was by faaar the best train I've ever been on. Comfortable, spacious, clean, fast, cheap and reliable. It was great after a terrible experience with Cross Country in the UK. I wish the UK had similar trains.
You have to admit this journey has a certain class and poetry. The contrast between the ultimate speed on most of the route and the slower but majestic ride through the Alps make it very remarkable. It's almost like you don't want the new tunnel to be built as it will probably kill the simple pleasure of watching the mountains.
Great video! I've travelled on the TGV in the reverse direction and it definitely looks like the red arrow is a good step up. Frecciarossa is probably one of the best operators in Europe, as you're suggesting. Will be interesting to see when/if they establish further services branching out of Italy. Cheers from Norway (generally great train service, though not in 300km/h)
I done Milan - Paris in June in standard class when I decided to travel back from Italy to London by train after my flight was cancelled and decent alternatives were available. Was a nice journey with great views and I much preferred it over flying. Only paid €39 and got about €10 back due to our hour delay arriving in Paris as we had to wait in Modane for just over an hour due to a fire further along the route. I could think of much worse places to be stuck. Just more time to admire the fantastic views.
The tgv is not able to operate on the Italian high speed railway because in Italy we have a different types of current on the railways and the tgv train isn’t able to use the Italian high speed version while the freccia rossa is design to be able to operate on most of the EU countries while the tgv only on French soil
Italy used to try with tooth and nail to prevent any foreign operater crossing into Italy, using regulatory tools to shoot anything and everything down. This got so bad that for some years there were barely any eurocity cross border services by train from Austria to Italy. Pretty outrageous in our day and age. I take it that things have gotten a lot better in recent years. Probably because ongoing obstructionism increasingly was liable to legal procedures against Italy due to violation of EU laws. It took the ÖBB a ridiculous long time to get permission to run Railjet sets on Italian tracks even though they have been perfectly capable of doing so from a technical perspective for a long time. I am not saying that France is any better, indeed it is probably worse. But as this video shows even they are on retreat in their obstructionism as this Italian service in France shows. There really is no other way long term if they don't wont to be sued into oblivion.
The issue is not current, it is the same 25K on the high speed line of both countries but the the ETCS. SNCF had the same issue in Switzerland until they used the EuroDuplex trains.
Chambery is the 5th largest city in Auvergne-Rhone Alpes, the region is massive and Lyon, Grenoble, St Etienne and Clermont Ferrand are all in it and are bigger than Chambery. Chambery is though the biggest city in the Savoie Department, so maybe thats what you meant?
Great video as usual :) One thing, the city of Lyon is the 3rd largest city in France like you said. However, we should recall that with its suburbs it is much bigger than Marseille and therefore is second ;)
Great train but these view blocking ads are nothing short of appaling and deal breaking. Borderline crazy if ou consider that they are blocking the view for the most expensive class. I hope Tren Italia is getting its act together and those ads are just temporary.
I was looking forward to my trip to Rome via this route and Milan this month (September 2023) but the landslide near the border with France has put paid to that with all services cancelled for at least two months! I need to adhere to my timetable so must now join the sardine can of a claustrophobic aircraft! The travel insurance company didn’t seem to understand that journeys can actually be made by train instead of flying!
How can they change the voltage they use at the station surely would be 1500v they use to arrive into the station. Shows how simple and still behind the times the UK railway is
Hi. Very informative. How about a return trip from milan to paris incorporating the Bernina train? Guessing that would include an overnight stop in Zurich? Cheers from New Zealand.
What the ETR1000 needs on the list seen at 4:20 is 15000v AC that way it can compete with Austrian 145 mph 230 kmh capable ÖBB Baureihe 1216 locomotive used on Germany Austria Italy services via Schnellfahrstrecke Innsbruck Rosenheim. Germany and Austria use the same PZB90 LZB & Sifa with the European Union standard Postive Train control ETCS which is on ETR1000. Only ETR610 also known as Schweizer Bundesbahn SBB Rabe 503 has the German & Austrian Punktförmige Zugbeeinflussung Linienzugbeeinflussung Sifa equipped. For 15kv 16.7hz Germany Austria operation the French 1.5kv DC Pantograph 1.95m strip Metalized Carbon boost be used to feed off that for the train voice power lock since the Swiss Italian French 25kv 50hz AC 1.45m Cooper Strip will lose contact on German and Austrian 15kv 16.7hz OHLE
The train has the capacity to use the system, it's just not included in current trains because there is no need, however it is included in the design and can be built in/activated if needed.
Good video, just one point, I wish you’d stop saying food and drinks are complimentary , which would mean supplied free of charge, which isn’t the case, they are included in the price….
That’s not how it works on French railways - almost all stations, especially big ones like Gare de Lyon, require pre-departure ticket checks on high speed services regardless of the operator. One of their biggest flaws!
Thank you for this beautiful video. The only disappointment, as an Italian, is to see a human being on a plate of pasta drinking coca cola, because the taste of coca cola mathematically kills the taste of the pasta dish! Other than that the video is really nice and interesting :)
I see this and think why can't we do this. It appears that too many are too negative all the time. When suggesting journey's much shorter you still get hit by the argument that people would just fly. But Why though. People will happily travel on the train but the service is seen as poor and expensive
Collective stupidity and gullibility will lead to decades of consequences and an expensive but much needed lesson for the English on the history of Europe the EEC and the EU.
Paris to Lyon and Turin to Milan you will find that most of this route is actually 300kph. It only the Lyon to Turin stretch that is slower, due to well, mountains. There is a new base tunnel under construction with a new high speed line that will mean much higher speeds between Lyon and Turin.
In Italy, once the Frecciarossa and Italo train sets enter the high speed line between Turin and Milan, they rarely dip below 250kph, It's when they are on the classic lines where they are restricted to 150kph and slower depending on the section. The high speed line parallels the A4 autostrada for most of the route and only changes to the classic lines just east of Settimo Torinese (Turin suburb on the west end) and Rho (Milan suburb on the east end).
What's the point of the second check after the entrance gate ? Just to make sure ?? That's ridiculous. If your QR code was good enough to enter the platform, it has to be the right train for you. I don't get where a quid pro quo could possibly even happen. I mean, those e-gates are already bad enough, they make train stations go down the route of airports, you know....
Because the gates are there to stop "undesirable" people, not to check your ticket. You could enter with a ticket for Milan suburban services or, better still, sometimes just wave a ticket-shaped object at the staff.

There could be direct trains from St Pancras to Milan or Nice via Lyon, but Brexit. Lyon is the second city in France.
Oh, how nice to get this in little England. Birmingham to Milan ………
2:41 always love to the hear SNCF "bum bum ba-dum" jingle
The most iconic railway jingle in the world 😁
This is the whole jingle here ruclips.net/video/8OSfOTsXYNY/видео.html
@@budapestkeletistationvoices hahah amazing thank you - never knew there was such a long dance music version!
@@genuinepetermorgan well, yes. RENFE also have a long version of its jingle
Judging by the quality of this train you can see why it took Arafer two years to agree to Trenitalia running Milan-Paris in competition with SNCF.
what do you mean?
@@rickycis4399 Hello Ricky. Check the RUclips videos comparing both trains.
Nice to see more videos in mainline Europe
Amazing! Thanks for the great video
Great job. Wish we could have trains like this in Australia
Intercity passenger rail in the U.S. Canada and Australia is pathetic especially considering these are First World countries.
I' ve seen beautiful trains in some documentaries from 🇳🇿

In realtà è per l'ETCS ... loro hanno da tanti anni il 25kV 50Hz

This dude literally wrote the same thing i posted before him and he get all the glory
Tgv can arrive until bcn
Good video end i miss my italy ❤
Please post a trip from Barcelona to Milan.
Seeing galaxy express in that station artwork made me smile
Great video of a beautiful route. 👌
This trip looked amazing! I hope that I can try it one day myself.
By the 2023 thank to the new tunnel it will take only 4 h instead of 6

Very nice station

I hate wraps that spoil the view. There oughta be a law
Considering the fact that a one way ticket Rome to Milan in second class is 95 euros, pretty sure this would cost at least 600 one way
Great review! Is there good storage for big luggage cases on board?
Yes, big luggage can be stored near the exit doors on both sides of the carriage, with enough space for everyone
Even the overhead racks can accomodate medium sized luggage.

I appload the French pronouciation.😂
Excellent video 👏
I learnt from the best 😉 Merci mon ami!
I’m sorry to say that Italian pronunciation wasn’t as great. Bardonecchia should be pronounced as Bardonekkya. In Italian ch=k and thus cch=kk
SNCF should make more effort to eradicate graffiti.
Same Italian companies need doing that
I've never understood why they put exterior advertising wrap over windows on trains and buses. A window is designed to allow for a clear view.
Why did Britain turn it's back on Europe? It was a stupid thing to do.
Collective stupidity and gullibility will lead to decades of consequences and an expensive but much needed lesson for the English on the history of Europe the EEC and the EU.
How much of this route is actually "high speed"?
From Paris to Lyon and from Turin to Milan, they are building a high speed tunnel between Lyon and Turin
have you stopped making videos ?
What about passport control 🤔
No need for passport control as both Italy and France are in the Schengen visa-free area.
300km/h is on rare occasions, the overall average speed is lower than 200km/h.
