    Just an additional note: We, the AntsCanada Team, do not collect a single penny from the GAN Farmers on their sales. The GAN Farmer chooses their own prices and keep their entire payments. The AntsCanada team also manages all the GAN Project emails that come in on a daily basis, and offers GAN Farmers discounts on our products to encourage more GAN Farmers to sign up. We do all of this without getting paid from the GAN Project because we truly believe in the advocacy. #TeamNativeAnts

      AntsCanada If you got the drive to do it and the work ethic too then it's not too hard. That's not to say it isn't hard but here in the US where I'm at you have to put in a good bit of effort with your swarm prevention. In fact Spring is when you spend most of your time in the hives as the colonies come out of winter and start building back up as well as bringing in nectar and pollen. If really want to go for it then my first suggestions would be to try to find someone around you that keeps bees to try and be an apprentice of some kind and research the hobby in your area. Biggest thing you may have to worry about is the Africanised bees if you have them there.

    AC question of the week answer:
    According to this video, catching local queen ants is better for the environment because exotic queens could be shipped illegaly, they maybe don't survive to new and different conditions and diet. Also because they can spread diseases, outcome native ants, become pests and the other exotic ants could destabilize one entire ecosystem after being released intentionally or accidentally.

    One factor that many don't think about is that If people don't agree with your ethics, they will deny you their business. Why would I want to support people who don't care about our planet or actually care about the lives of the ants? I love your outlook on actually being empathetic and keeping ants in their native areas. Thank you, AC father. I love your channel and the way you do business. Es existiert auch ein legaler Markt: ruclips.net/video/ZBf-JHYYl_I/видео.html. Vieles ist dann einfach nur noch Bürokratie und hat mit dem einheimischen Artenschutz nicht mehr viel zu tun. Noch vor der EU Zeit musste ich beispielsweise eine Einfuhrgenehmigung beantragen für den Import von Ameisen aus Deutschland in die Schweiz. Mit den EU Abkommen ist das plötzlich nicht mehr nötig. Es macht natürlich Sinn, dass beispielsweise der Import von Feuerameisen (Pest) verboten und somit geregelt ist.

      I have a similar question to this. I live in North America and I'd want to get a honeypot ant queen. However, I don't live in the arid states in America, I live in Ohio bordering Indiana (aka probably one of the most biologically-boring areas I've ever seen). Would it still be alright to get them because they're still native to the country?

    • @gabewright5571
      @gabewright5571 7 лет назад +1

      Theodore Hodbor I would avoid getting them due to the great differences in ecosystems, but if you can work out an ethical and fool proof way of keeping them, then try your best. I personally don't recommend that you get them because most methods of obtaining them are unethical, but as long as you can mimic their natural habitat, you should be ok.

    Wanting to get started into raising ants next year.
    Something I'm happy about is that I live in a place where the temperatures get below freezing so anything tropical will definitely not hurt the ecosystem since they will be dead within a year if they get out. Still wouldn't import from anywhere like Europe with similar temperatures where non-native ants could survive.

    I was offered a queen Lasius neoniger after talking to people about eventually getting a flavus colony. We talked about care, needs and such, and I decided the neoniger would be a wonderful start. Now- they aren't originally from New York State, but NY is absolutely full of them. I very intentionally didn't want any species not from the area since this is my first colony (asides from an ant farm I had as a kid in the 80s that didn't have a queen that I wished did at the time), I wanted the added that if anything happened and say- I didn't connect something correctly and I had a big escape on my hands- I wouldn't cause issues.
    So getting 1 queen, maybe a few workers- they're being nice in giving her to me so I'm not asking too many questions there- but what I have to the side for the flavus queen I was going to get in a few months, will work for this gal. I would absolutely love the weaver ants, I have a great pic of 2 ants touching antennae in an enclosure when I was visiting Sydney Australia- but I was a bio major, I switched to marine bio, not risking my surrounding ecosystem is important to me, esp since accidents can happen.
    I won't think badly about anyone who keeps alien species responsibly- buuuuuut I think I'm very happy with the guys I could catch in my backyard, even if in this case I'm not actually going out and getting her from my own backyard.
