I suggest naming the new queen Destiny, as she sought out AntsCanada all on her own. And for slender ants, I recommend a cut and hollowed branch with limbs, set with its hollowed side facing the glass so you can film the nest.
Perfect. Antscanada needs to see this NOW!!!
That's perfect!
@Antscanada see this comment!
Hi
this is perfect for this queen antcanada see this NOW!!!
Try splitting some old twigs down the middle and hollow them out so you can attach the twigs to the glass so you can still see the ants while keeping them comfortable.
I was thinking this!
@@AntsCanada Don't forget to acquire some ant cows for them to herd :)
@@Ernoskij Plus live woody plants for the "cows" to feed on.
Similar to this species, in my country we have "pseudomyrmex simplex", local to a bunch of countries from central and south america, aswell as in the caribbean, like in my case, DR. i have spotted it also near dead twigs and branches. according to my research, it has been found in queenless nests, (indicating high polydomy) and also in nests with more than one functional dealate queen, but apparently is still casified as monogynous, i still struggle to wrap my head around that. They are also monomorphic.
There are other species sharing this bodyshape, but i have never seen other species, only this one
It would be awesome to see an habitat with those mealy bugs! They actually farm like a bug cattle that’s fascinating!
So long time watcher but I think this is the first time I've ever commented. I really don't have a good idea for the name but honestly I think the habitat needs to be as natural as possible. Being that this species is already noted to be very hard to rear an entire colony in captivity I think the best choice is to find some slightly hollow branches stretched over the rest of the terrarium to make it seem more natural with melebugs placed in there so it can mimick their natural state as much as possible. I understand the desire to be able to see them but we have a responsibility to keep them in a way that provides the best possibility to thrive so we can see them in as natural way as possible and they can feel at their best. Lol just my thoughts.
I completely agree with your statement, I like being able to see ants but I also enjoy to have them not stressed out and feel completely as If they were in their natural habitat. Just my opinion tho.
That's why prisons needs to mimic the natural human city life. So prisoners can feel naturally at ease and stress free since they committed crimes.
True I mean
*mealbugs
@@vincentlee7359 I don't agree the prisons should mimic that. But what crime did the ants commit?!😂
I have many name suggestions:
1. Nemy (African Origin) meaning “sweet”
2. Anwen (Welsh Origin) meaning “Sweet and most beautiful”
3. Vevina (Scottish Origin) “Sweet lady”
4. Amla (Arabic Origin) meaning “Sweet by nature”
5. Soma (Sanskrit Origin) meaning “Lunar nectar”
I picked these 5 because they all correlate around their species craving for sweets, and I thought it was only fitting to name her Royal Highness after her sweet tooth.
I love the name Soma
love the lunar nectar the best
Aw, your ideas a cute. I myself thought of calling the queen the Slenderwoman.

She seems awfully active for a queen
She’s super cool and kinda funny, a lot more personality than most ants seem to have.
Also her name could be Joan, like Joan of ark but instead she’d be Joan of bark.
And in terms of their habitat you could make a large network of tubes with the red tape over them, you would be able to see the entire nest and it would be like being inside of branches.

I did not expect this video to solve a mystery for me. A few years back I was helping clear out dead branches off of a farm when I felt a sharp stinging sensation on my forearm. What I saw on my arm looked just like this slender ant queen you caught. I brushed it off of me and looked closer at it and recognized it must be an ant, but I had never seen an ant that looked like that before. Black, quite big, but skinny and had a weird shaped butt with a stinger. I live in North America, in the Pacific Northwest, and I've seen plenty of ants, but nothing like the one that stung me. Initially I thought it was a fire ant that had got me, but when I saw it, I realized that was not the case. When I looked it up online, the internet showed all the usual native ant species, but none that matched. I just assumed maybe I misidentified a weird insect that mimics the form of an ant, but when I saw the queen that landed on you, my jaw dropped. I was stunned to see it again, but also confused on how it ended up here in America. My heart sunk in my chest when you showed the seized ants, it finally clicked in my head what happened. In my area, ant keeping and bee keeping have become quite popular, and I suspect that perhaps the ant that stung me was a victim of being imported, then discarded by a careless owner. This is all speculation though, but given what you said in this video, all the signs point to that ant being imported and dumped somewhere locally. By the way, for those curious, the sting felt a bit less aggressive than a fire ant, but still burned and throbbed for a bit.
I found this ant one day in my backyard and decided to catch it because it looked like a queen but a hour later it drowned herself
It is so heart warming, at least for me, when the queen accepts the food offering and eats it! When that did not happen to my queens, I was worrying. Thank you for this amazing video!
I also love when they accept our peace offering! Thank you for watching! Ant love forever!
The queens not accepting the food may be because they're a caustral species, you should look into that just in case. Good luck with your colonies!

The name Willow would definitely fit for this queen. Since the name "Willow" is an unique female name of English origin and means “slender” or “graceful”. The name is also derived from the willow tree which has a slender shape and graceful branches.
Plus: I believe a terrarium would be best suited and make an entertaining video, maybe towards the future you can move that colon into the ant house
oo good suggestion! i’m thinking of lulum
Willow wolf from piggy
I like the name. I will vote for you!
I don’t like it it’s my opinion
Willow would be lovely actually
Keeping local ants responsibly is beneficial in every way, but it is also much cheaper than pretty almost every other pet.
I suggest naming her either: Werifesteria (meaning to wander through forest in search of mystery) or Lissome (meaning thin, supple, and graceful)
This species needs as natural of a habitat as possible. Giving her a terrarium with small trees she can live in. Honestly an opportunity to name her slim shady. Lol. Ant love forever
Edit: Did not think AntsCanada would see this, or anyone really, but I'll take it. lol
After that stellar Superbowl halftime show performance, I second that! SLIM SHADY is a great suggestion!

No... Bamboo style testtube is the key the queen will die if that's what you put them in, now I'm not so much of an expert but I do know that putting them in setups like that guarantees failure
I’m crying now after you told us about the queen’s stoped at custom’s, and because we all know what custom’s will do. We need more people like you that do it the right way for ant farming!
binge watching all your updates since I just found your channel. from the 7 colonies video I just got hooked.
Also she definitely chose you, you take good care of your ants and give them a life of free food without the risk of predators. Those ants are so lucky and she wanted in on that.
I strongly suggest that we name a slender and if she starts a colony we should give her a forest of branches because we want her to feel at home and act natural like she would normally be in the wild
I really think that she should be the queen of the aunt house because you not only found her there during construction but that’s where her home is that big piece you’re planning I really think will be perfect with lots of little branches in it
Props on the conservation pitch.
For a habitat, how about an ant tower with branches stacked in a vertical position around the perimeter like a palisade. Run a grove down each branch piece on the side facing the glass and drill some random holes along the sides to encourage exploration and boring to other branches.
You could name her Milly or Molly, based off the milibugs! It may not be a cool name, but it is a cute name and it could show people that ants who aren't conventionally "cute" can still be adorable!

I suggest naming the queen the "Dark Empress" due to her really dark exoskeleton
As for the enclosure, I recommend some branches that are really hollow, like the satellite branches of a tree.
Dark empress and ember empress
Imagine being such a good ant keeper that ants seek you out.
I found an ant like this, it was the same but had an extra pincer at the end of her gaster where the stinger is. It was a few weeks ago while there was hardly any nuptial flights so I doubt it was a queen but it did have wings so maybe!
i actually thought at first that this was some sort of trapjaw ant because its body shape is so similar, but obviously she doesnt have those jaws
I have ants similar to those in my home in Quebec
So for anyone who wants to know her exact species, from what I can see it's Tetraponera nigra, which is native to the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Some parts of Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Some parts of India. Sri Lanka, Thailand and other countries I didn't include because this message is getting long.
Edit: Nvm, it's T. nitida, I thought it was T. nigra because of her all black body and rectangular head, but I didn't account the color of the legs and the and antennae. Thanks to those guys in the comments for correcting me.

For the second question... I would use branches even if it makes it 'boring' watching them because thats the way they live in the wild life. Pets - no matter the species - are a responsibility and not for someone's entertainment.
When I was a small girl (okay we're talking over half a century ago but bear with me) there was a model who was so skinny nobody could believe it and her name was Twiggy. I think that would be the perfect name for her.

I encourage hollow branches since they are made for the hollow branches.
Her name should be svelte, meaning slim, slender and elegant like her!
And it should be in a double stacked ac outworlds then branches and twigs in them and then rocky/mossy terrain on the ground
The more series I watch. The more interested I am. I had a thought last night after watching a few of your episodes. What if earth is just a terrarium for some advanced extraterrestrial civilization and they watch us in the same way we watch this 😂
Ahhhh yes the Fishbowl Hypthesis!

I choose to believe that the ant in question was terrified at first, and then had a moment of 'Oh it's Mikey' and strolled into the test tube of her own will.

If I ever plan on keeping ants, I’m still living in my parents house and they say no to that, I don’t wish to have anything I couldn’t have at least the possibility of catching myself. It’s one of those rules I’ve put onto myself about it. If I couldn’t catch it in Wyoming, I won’t even attempt to buy it or find someone who did catch it and can’t take care of it properly.
Also known as, I’m terrible at catching things and it’s highly likely I’d end up finding a person who caught a queen native to Wyoming that can’t take care of it properly and take her in. If need be, I’ll pay them for her if they don’t wish to let her go but know they can’t properly take care of her. (Aka: I’m not going to keep anything I know could be a massive problem if they got out, like those black market ants. I didn’t even know there was an ant black market, but it’s nice to know what to stay away from and what to notify people of so they know not to buy black market ants.)
It would all start out with one search, “What ant species are native to *insert my county here* Wyoming?”
Edit: I resumed the video, that works too-
I suggest for the Queen, "Selinderella" Since she still has to do her work (hunting/foraging) while she is founding her colony. And for the colony "Selendrix" since they thrive in a matrix of slender branches in trees.
Also, the flat brooding chamber AC sells should be an excellent starter place until you can get an aquarium setting built for them.
I think the name “The Hunter Queen” sounds like a good name because you said that unlike other queens they hunt for food instead of fasting for months
Queen Diana named after a goddess of the hunt because she's a species of ant that still hunts
The Schmidt pain index would most likely tell you how that ant species will sting with you having to experience it.
Hello AntsCanada! I found a queen exactly like this a few weeks ago. It was wandering around my balcony and I thought it must have been a queen. I caught it and followed the normal procedure, but unfortunately she died before she could give birth to any eggs. I think this was because I didn’t feed her, instead thought she was a claustral species.I would love if you would be able to help me get more information on her. Thank you!
PS- I live in Mumbai, India
WoW
Maybe eventually make a terrarium of twigs for them, but I think a cool way to start would be similar to the old Fire Nation set up, where there were tons of tubes going all over to a few different outworlds.
Or at least that's how I remember it, it has been quite a while.
I suggest it might be a bullet ant because those ants can sting and are slender.
Amazing videos by the way you are the one who inspired me to get a ant colony.
Wow I can't belive you still post I still remember the original fire nation and the pitcher plant videos
Maybe name the Queen, Dryad since Dryad is the Greek Goddess of wood and she looks like a beautiful young woman which could relate to the slender bodies of the slender ants.
Dryads would be a good name for the colony.
I like the name Twiggy. It had ties to the model, so it makes sense since it is so slim and it is also a play on where the nests are normally found.
Yes me too
I know it's late for the name but: Queen Vine because of her slender body and how their species nest on branches (Vines wrap trees and branches I am pretty sure), Queen Crow (Or Raven) because of her black exoskeleton, "Nelumbo Empress" Because Nelumbo is a lotus that represents beauty and Queen Snake because of her slender body. I personally liked Queen Phyllostachys Nigra Which is a black bamboo, but like- It looks hard to pronounce lol.
What about you put some branches around it and do it on the need so she can feel just like home and add some leaves?
Something tells me that this colony would be right at home in a tube nest. Smaller tubes than what you use for the connecting of out world setups. And as a name, well since she is royalty, how about Slinderella(Cinderella).
I never found anything meaningful or special about ants until I found your channel. Thanks to you I now value the importance of them in the ecosystem and didn't spray them with bug killers anymore. Keep up the good work!
I would suggest naming her Lightning check because of her slender body it looks like she’s really fast. And her enclosure like a rainforest with plants and rocks and drift wood 😊
I live in Tasmania Australia and our jackjumper ants remind me a little bit like those your showing
I want to name her Ditzi, bc she seems so curious that she's a lil clumsy. But very cute!
I also wanted to ask some things regarding the illegal importing of foreign ants. While I agree 100% with everything you’ve said about WHY bringing in foreign ant species unregulated could be disastrous, I would like to know your opinion on these:
is there a way (in your opinion) that foreign ants could be safely kept within a different territory?
How do you feel about other species, inverts especially, that are imported? I.e. Isopods, mantids, tarantulas, roaches? Do you feel that keeping these species is different, and safer? I know it would be a lot easier for an ant colony to potentially become invasive than say a species of tarantula, but I would like your thoughts, especially now when the LACEY act may be permanently affecting how us Americans keep exotics!
For most creatures I would say I'd love to be able to own in any country or region responsibly. However, with ants, the main reason they are hard to keep in other countries other than their own is that they are escape artists. You could have as many precautions as you can in place to make sure they don't, but even antscanada has had full colonies escape from their enclosures. If there was a way to *guarantee* that they can't escape, then I'd be fine seeing them outside of their own countries.
Ants are just so small, have massive colonies, and can easily overpower native species that it's just a huge risk if a colony escapes. Same with any small species of bug really that isn't kept alone. In the US, if I remember right, the honeybee that everyone knows about is actually invasive and out competes native bee populations, but most bee keepers use the invasive species to produce honey or help their own farms/gardens. You just have to be careful when you have insects that could do damage to your area if not housed properly.
I had an idea for the nest if you get a colony started, could you make them an area make out of small diameter cpvc pipe, with parts cut in half and up against the glass so you can still see in. Cpvc is used for drinking water so it should be ant safe and easy to work with
I would suggest naming her Lightning check because of her slender body it looks like she’s really fast. And her enclosurelike a rainforest with plants and rocks and drift wood 😊

This is amazing! I’ve never seen a queen of this species! And to think it just came to you!
Wow! I knew she looked familiar. I've been trying to figure out what kind of ants the ones in my garden are for so long. I live in North America and the twig ants I've come across are incredibly curious and seemingly friendly. I've never had a problem with them, they like crawling on me when I'm outside and never bite or sting. I quite enjoy their endearing personalities.
I am new here. The queen ant is very beautiful. She looks smart too. I have made friends with ants before. I gave a colony food and they stayed away from my apartment because I redirected them away from the area. The queen of the colony got her first bites of food from me before she went underground to lay her eggs. I use to keep ants as pets and I learned a lot about them when I was younger. Ant's are very important to the environment and it's easy to damage their ecosystem. It's important to keep a balance in their ecosystem to help the environment be balanced. 👍

I used to be one of those kids who crushed ants just for fun when I whas little then I just got bored of it but now I know just how important ants are to the ecosystem and how interesting they are.
