I'm just now making the move from using my phone for my gazillion photos, to getting a serious camera and diving more into photography, and this was super helpful!
This is the first video of yours I've seen. It really came through at the right time. I'm 26 and have worked trade jobs and was enlisted ever since I started working. Even as a kid, my summer jobs were washing semis or doing loading and unloading for a trucking company. I was raised basically being told men do hard, labor-intensive trade jobs. I fell in love with photography about a year ago. I've recently started classes at my local community College and am hoping to make a career out of not only photography but digital art but even with that I've felt weirdly lost with it and have felt like quitting but this video really helped for some reason.
A5100. 24.2MP sensor, touch-focus, great AF, easier on the battery. 1080p60 only, but easy to upscale and easy on the memory vards. when it comes to lenses maybe you choose the Sony 18-135mm lens which is AF, and some excellent manual lenses like the TTArtisan 10mm F2 and the 7Artisans 60mm F2.8 Macro. that covers pretty much everything and you learn how to orchestrate aperture and shutter speed. for the lowest price possible. another recommendation for portraits is the Brightin Star 35mm F0.95 for 150 bucks. yes, the manuals are that cheap now and are metal/glass builds with excellent coatings. sharpness, bokeh, aberrations, vignetting, flaring - you will be blown away at this price point.
Love your channel and energy. I've been shooting professionally since the mid 1990's, and your advice here is rock solid and should be required watching for anyone looking at getting into professional photography. I wasted a lot of time and money learning through trial and error on what you have shared here in a short 9:41... Listen to this 15x if you're starting out, and do not deviate from the advice. Especially about learning how to creat masterpieces by replicating existing work. Once you learn the hows and whys an established artist or work of art "works," you're 90% of the way there. But that unfortunately can honestly take some time.
I just retired and decided to try photography. I bought a Sony a7rv, Sony GM 2 85mm f1.4 and a GM 35mm f1.4 (thinking about the GM 24-70 f2.8) I haven't turned it on yet until I learn as much as I can first
I teach production at a university. Not photo only, but more multimedia, photo, video, graphics, web. Love your advice because it's real. This is what I tell my students, too. I am going to use your video to back up my lesson on "going pro."
Definitely buy used gear from a place like KEH. They thoroughly inspect the gear before selling it and have a return for any reason period. Since they specialize in photography they know the gear and what to check when someone sells to them. Of course when it’s time to upgrade you can also sell the gear back to them.
Great Video, thanks for giving these tips. Another thing that helped me up the photography is join the local photography community and go out shoot together with them..
And never forget - 100% of the pictures you miss are those that you did not take. And the most useless camera on the market today - mirrorless or not- is the one you left at home.
I bought all my gear either user or demo products from photography shops, saved me so much money and I never got disappointed. A lot of this gear is hardly ever used at all.
UCR campus is amazing. Used to live down the road from it on Cranford Ave. I fell in love with Riverside/Moreno Valley and it's proximity to LA, San Diego, Joshua Tree, etc. I miss it more than I could describe here...
@@JasonVong I’m so far away from home that getting to see that aerial actually moved me to tears. Working hard to get back there, but I can’t tell you enough what seeing it again did to motivate me. Thank you, so much.
On your first PRO gigs, make sure do overs are an option. Imagine the nightmare of messing up a wedding shoot due to lack of experience. No do-overs on a wedding shoot.
I think photography is a journey. If you start over, you should still make all the mistakes, as this is the real way to learn. And to learn that a mistake might be good idea in certain circumstances. Having to do photography 'right' is an idea created by content creators and teachers, and of course certain pros. Why should I study 1 or 2 styles only? In order to replicate those quickly?
7:43 pick up a pro gig - or ask for a test session wherever you can. All other opportunities basically depend on people skills. Sure, you may work in a (geographic) area where you'd get gigs anyway, typically events and weddings, but for anything worthwhile that brings real development it's personal. It's my eyes, my presence, my behavior, my creative decisions or lack thereof.
Great tips for beginners! A friend just started out so this video is perfect for him! Great timing. I would love a video on little side hussles or money makers with photography! 🙏

I'm planning on getting a camera as soon as i see a good deal on a used one. I'm hopinh to get into wildlife/nature or space photography one day as a hobby. Gonna come back here when i need to learn more. Thanks!
Don’t diss the canon rebel - it’s what I had back in film days, and now have the digital version. I did a lot of professional shots with it. Great results. When I was a pastry chef, and people expected I had all the expensive gear in the kitchen, I would say “Technique is more important than tools - just keep your tools in shape, know how to use them, and keep your elbows in.” 😊
Wow, my background is in music videography back like 20 years ago but more run and gun with no planning required. But now I'm flipping all that around and really stoked about telling stories and using better quality gear now that it's more accessible. So I started upgrading gear and this video was a nice compliment too where I'm at and how I'm thinking about things and needing to be thinking more like a photographer and less like an event videographer. Holy shi, I didn't expect to see Dir en grey in this video. Such a great and unique band that I love sooo much. They are just incredible. Lovely photos btw! You doing well, man
@Ms-tk2tn well, it's not perfect and I would guess it's the same with other models, but mine at least cannot get lcd screen opened to 180 degrees straight. It's 3° off, so when I shoot with lcd bended upwards, it's hard to guess if I hold camera straight. Interestingly, my old a5100 got no such a problem, even tho it's totally different performer. Big miss on Sony part. Also joke doesn't end there, there is this function - covering sensor inside, and when turned on(so it cover sensor against a dust etc) it warns you to not let the sun shine on it - but it will be covered, not open - lol. Well, eye af, sensor hw cover and high iso with higher resolution are the most important points for me. Didn't go for R since max iso in video takes a hit as well as burst limit is bad. Compact line is missing even more of things. But I was afraid of it being bulky like a crt tv, but most bulky are lens, rofl... Camera feels pretty small now... just that apsc one feels even smaller...performance matters after all...💪
This dude with the clutch videos I started photography again cuz of Jason & professor Hines love there videos. We need more iPhone 15 pro max photography
Great video! I love the advice to really look around your own area. There are locations I've found locally that I love photographing that people are often asking me, "Hey, where's THAT?", as if to say, "There's something THAT cool near BUFFALO?" (Yes, I'm in Buffalo. This week guess what I'm practicing photographing! Hint: it's snow.)
That’s awesome to hear! I’m a homebody growing up but photography has forced me out more and I think that’s where my passion for cityscape and landscape definitely spawned from!
Thank you for making this video! I just started street walking and I'm amazed at what I've seen. The advice you gave was exactly what I needed to hear so that I can practice the right way. Stay creative bro
I'm past the beginning in my photography but starting new in videography. I missed out on these tips earlier but I can sure use them for video making. Thank you.
Since I’m a hybrid shooter, a lot of my concepts here definitely apply to videography and filmmaking as well! Including mood board, used gear, etc. Good luck!
Just stepped up from a Canon 1300D to a Canon R7 with Tamron 18-400 lens (the Tamron 55-300 broke inside the camera somehow and took out both so insurance paid 2/3 the cost of the new setup and I'd about outgrew the 1300D. What a change .... wow. My preferred theme is lightning photography and it's been damn hard on the 1300D with native included 18-55 lens to get crisp shots but I have a few good ones. Unfortunately there was no way to run in bulb mode AND control the aperture on that camera meaning YMMV. Looking forward to playing with the new setup, it's got some superb photos of rose buds etc already. My current learning phase is focal point (I noticed some of my rose flower photos with the new r7 was super crisp on the flower but it had blurred the background and by pure accident made an average photo an excellent photo. So I need to work on that and use it. Then I need to go back to aperture again as I've forgotten my little work I'd done there and didn't have enough control before of it where now with the better camera I do. In saying all this, I've had some DAMN GOOD shots just from my Samsung Note10+ 5G in a clamp mount on the tripod with a 20second open setting and using the Samsung watch to tap every 23ish seconds to start again. It's limited a little in control options but is unbelievable for the size and package still. I understand why most don't bother buying extra cameras now unless they want that little more like I do. I've gone from point and click crappy Kodak film cameras worth like $20 from Kmart at the time, to a crappy 4.3mp digicam just so I don't have development costs, to a meh 10mp digicam (now the wife's because it's really point and shoot no pro type modes), to a 13mp DSLR of ok stature to now the R7 and I've learned a little along the way on each step. I think if I were to step from film straight up to an R7 I'd be completely lost where now I've at least only got a few "yeah better learn more about that" points. The used market here in Australia is a little meh now I think because 95%+ of the pop just use phones.
Jared’s channel may be mostly about the newest high-end pro gear but that exact same gig photography video you featured helped get me off auto & I’d also recommend anyone to take a look :) 🇬🇧
Interesting video! I've seen some of your videos here and there when searching for photography tips. Keep up the good work :). I definitely agree with mostly buying used gear. I've had no problems purchasing from reputable stores, local sellers, or on platforms with purchase protection. Think about it this way; you'll be able to purchase more gear. 👀
Great video as always 💯💯💯 you mentioned to keep an updated portfolio, that would be a great idea for a next content for you to show how to create a portfolio. As i struggle with that so maybe you can help.
I did not know anything about my Sony A6300 with the 18-135MM kit that it came included. I took a lot of photos and always wondered why they did not look the best. I watched your video about the best camera lens for beginners is 85MM prime. The details on why that lens is the best to have for all around photography. Currently I only use one lens the G Master 85MM and absolutely love the shots it produces. I want to master that lens first and eventually buy the 24MM G master to use as a blog camera or close shots of Pokemon cards.
Huh I thought I responded to this last night. But it said something like nothing wrong with a lil inspiration but 100% photographing as much as possible and experimenting is a great way to get better!
Let me put a little bit more emphasis on exactly what I mean when I said what I said. I'm a local here based on where I live. We've seen the MOST popular spots being photographed over and over. Its saturated. And thats the problem with Photography now. Even as a beginner I wouldn't try to replicate other peoples work, as people have different shooting styles, of course obviously as a beginner you wouldn't know this. Hence why I said I personally wouldn't recommend this to any new photographer whether that be a friend or family member. The inspiration is not there (you're basically just copying homework). I get what you mean, but in the long term its useless. Just go out and shoot as much as you can. Get hands on experience. FIND what you LIKE and just shoot. Like over and over different things try new things once you get really into photography. Find WHAT YOU THINK looks good and do that. That keeps the hobby interesting and less mundane. @@KC-in9px
Let the gear pass to you as a gift from your grandparents 😃. Somethimes new gear is even cheaper than used gear. Just got a Sony 11 mm f/1.8 for 350 € new for my a6000.
If I had to start over, I would do more research, and rent all the cameras that I was interested in so that I can become more familiar with the brands and their quirks. I would also take a look at what people are saying about the cameras, the good but especially the bad, so that I know what it is I can and can't put up with. Also spend more on learning and lenses with one affordable and versatile camera for what I want to do.
Very useful information here Jason. You mentioned taking on pro gigs. What about if someone reaches out for a pro gig in photography that you haven't shot and its through a client referral. Would you take it? Would you pass? Thoughts?
Jason, the middle of nowhere is not Riverside. Come visit Northern California, and I don’t mean San Francisco. I mean the real north. Redding, Shasta, Crescent City.
How do I do #5? I have (most) of the gear, and I've taken a lot of photos (mostly street and nature photography) that I think are pretty good, but I'd love to try shooting a wedding, or doing fashion photography, or anything really. I have no idea how to get started.
I have three a6600s I might sell that I have only used to do interview videos with. The one camera I want cost twice as much as all three of these when they were new. I still have the packaging even. :) if you're interested leave a comment!
yes! that's an awesome lens....add that to your collection. save you money then get the 85mm 1.8 or 90mm 2.8 after that save up again and get the 20mm 1.8...you'll pretty much have all the range...or you can pick up the Tamron or Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8 which is pretty much all your coverage except on the wide end.
I plan to get A7RV with Sony 14mm F1.8 which can crop 2X to 28mm F1.8 Low Light F3.6 DOF and Tamron 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 which can crop 2X to 800mm, these will mainly use to take photo and pair with Panasonic HC-X1500 25-600mm camcorder mainly for video, it's a good minimal setups right? I know quite a lot already just haven't have dedicated camera gears, I can cover ultrawide to super tele, the A7RV has the unique 4 ways screen and croppable high res sensor, the tele with extension tube and magnification filter can get good ultra macro, travel, everyday and so on covered too, that camcorder can attach macro and even more tele too. But now I have a question, for me Tamron lenses has a golden rendering look and Sony lenses has cooler rendering look, is there profile setting I can set for each lens so the SOOC photos and videos will looks the same if not nearly identical?

Buying used gear is epic, but I would recommend to never buy used batteries, SD cards or external hard drives. Those are the items that are the most subject to wear&tear, limited charge/write cycles and if you're paying for it, you want to use it to its max, and have the best chance to not run into reliability issues soon after purchase. I feel not enough people point this out.
Very good point! I actually do avoid getting used memory cards and batteries!
I agree with you. Buying a used battery? Smh, you have no idea how much life is left.
But sometimes people do sell unopened battery or sealed sd card just because they bought the wrong model etc etc etc. And that is pretty good bargain
@@jijingebob well, that's not "used" now, is it?
The fear with buying new gear for a noob (speaking for myself) is that I don’t know what defects to look out for. Would sometimes rather pay full price with warranty for the piece of mind. That said, buying preowned gear definitely saves you money if you know what to look out for.

My whole camera is used, and honestly one of the better decisions I’ve made. Basically got the lens for the price I paid if if I had purchased it new.
Great video with very helpful information in getting started. Love the photos of Riverside! Some of us actually enjoy the area. lol.
strong title got me here kudos, I hope to learn a lot
Jared’s channel may be mostly about the newest high-end pro gear but that exact same gig photography video you featured helped get me off auto & I’d also recommend anyone to take a look :) 🇬🇧
Lmfao, I laughed at 4:21 cause of that cut to Jared hahahahaha I started learning photography because of him as well.
this has helped me so much thank you i'm just new to your you tube
Great tips! Thanks Jason!
Very nice tips, thanks a lot!😎
Some of those concert photos are smashing! ❤
I love everything you do man
Learning is part of the fun, don't jump in at 80%. Start at zero and enjoy the journey.
at 4:10 he said the photos were crap.... when i thought they were good. : (
Interesting video!
This channel is so amazing 😊
Wait! You took pictures for Hyde and his band? OMG Though it does not look like L'arc but probably his solo band VAMP but this is huge if it were me.
next week I have my first shoot at a party but I can't really practice and I'm not sure or a bit unsure about which settings to use
Any updates? How did the shoot go?
Wise advice! And agree what you say on used gear!
Awesome tips. I wouldn’t personally do the first tip though! I would actually just go out as much as possible just to shoot and experiment
The first tip is awesome. By trying to replicate existing photos you'll quickly learn what settings are needed to capture good images.
Huh I thought I responded to this last night. But it said something like nothing wrong with a lil inspiration but 100% photographing as much as possible and experimenting is a great way to get better!
Or you could just find inspiration from books or online. imo. @@KC-in9px
@@KC-in9px
You shot wagakki band 🤯🤯🤯🔥🔥🔥 5:02
I think I perseverated a lot on the idea of Riverside California being in the middle of nowhere...but, yeah.
Let the gear pass to you as a gift from your grandparents 😃. Somethimes new gear is even cheaper than used gear. Just got a Sony 11 mm f/1.8 for 350 € new for my a6000.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Used Lumix lx100II.and some 43mm filters.
All in one under 550 Bugs... Job done! 🙂
Thoughts?
Keep pushing your content
Bro I went to USC and even I didn't explore beyond a few miles from campus 💀. I think everyone has regrets when we look back!
Jason, the middle of nowhere is not Riverside.
Come visit Northern California, and I don’t mean San Francisco. I mean the real north.
Redding, Shasta, Crescent City.
LOL at Riverside being the "not exciting hometown" 🤣🤣🤣
Is that the sony experia phone or w.e phone you were using as a monitor? great video btw
Yes XPERIA PRO allows me to record my camera screen for all my tutorials 😁
I appreciate everything you do, Jason ☺️
how did you read my mind??...subscribed!!
Quite inspiring!❤❤
I got my first camera a7cii , IS THE sony 24-70 gm i , is this good because I wont have money to buy anything else any time soon. Good video
yes! that's an awesome lens....add that to your collection. save you money then get the 85mm 1.8 or 90mm 2.8 after that save up again and get the 20mm 1.8...you'll pretty much have all the range...or you can pick up the Tamron or Samyang 35-150mm f2-2.8 which is pretty much all your coverage except on the wide end.
Wait a minute, IM from Riverside. Nice to meet a fellow riversidian
The journey is part of the interest, mistakes included.
Love your video !
Het the T3i is what I use 😂
Yes $500 is about all I am willing to spend on a camera and I do wish I bought 2nd hand to be honest.
STORY TIME: I remember starting my journey three years ago thinking no one would hire me - fast forward and I have a full-time content creation job and have worked with tv networks, sports leagues, and big influencers! If I can do it, you can too! I share tips and tricks on my youtube channel to! Hope you all the best and I'm here to help answer any questions you may have as well! ❤📸🎥
@JasonVong Why are you hating on Micro Four Thirds? 😢😉
I need to have your drive and energy when I'm out in the in the parks asking people if they would like a photo 😂
Great advice!
