Take it from an M5 owner The S62 is not Reliable, The double Vanos and Timing chain guides are prone to failure. Also the S62 sounds like an old diesel at Idle….

The M Division did put an S62 in an E46 as a skunkworks project. A total one off, but it's possible. Just like the E46 M3 estate prototype. Don't know if you knew about those two cars. But now, you do.
I am going to say. I’m pretty happy with the E39 V8 because I know in Germany during the early 2000s as they were trying to produce a CSL successor. Originally they were going to go with a V8 since it was meant to be a road going car that you could take to the track, they stuck with the in-line six, because of weight I think. But still pretty cool to see an E 39 V8 and a beautiful car like this. And by the way, that E39 V8 CSL is in the museum check it out.
Good job guys, defo an achievement getting the V8 sitting on it's mounts. The crossmember should unbolt pretty easy. I'd suggest you remove it and have the tabs professionally welded now you have them where you need. Also gives you a chance to get it powder coated and looking pretty. This engine/car is a huge investment, you don't want it falling apart. You'll end up hating (fixing) it. lol I'm debating doing a (possibly a B38 1.5 & 8hp45 gearbox) swap to make my Non-m3 e46 Compact a little bit special.. but it's a lot of effort just doing the research, not to mention picking up the tools and melting the cash card. 😂😂 Good luck with the Non-M3 NFS-MW Coupe Theo 👍🏾

Hey guys great choice of engine. If I had the money I would've installed a S62 over my M62 4.4 when I converted my E46 coupe. The hardest part really is making the oil pump work, even welding the engine mounts was easier!

E46 nut here, there's many types of prop/diff differences unfortunately. 320d/330d are their own, avoid these as they won't fit the S62/S54 motor or diff you will need. For 4cyl and 6cyl up to 2.8 is a smaller and different diff flange, prop and gearbox length. They don't all perfectly go together. For 6cyl 3.0 the diff flange is different, there are 2 types manual box prop and diff, and auto box prop and diff. These aren't interchangeable. Additionally then you have the M3 3.2, this has again a different gearbox, prop and diff. Most importantly for you, the diff will be an LSD, all other e46 diffs are open. Hope this helps!
The reason your swapping to the m60 oil pump is to delete the pickup tune solenoid system built into the s62 pump. It will allow the pan to be thinner so it fits better. The s62 has a very cool multi pickup system based on the accelerometer sensor ftom the anti lock brakes. If you were swapping this into an actual m3 it would be even easier, the s54 and s62 share the same family of Siemens ecus and they use a lot of the same protocols so it works with most of the factory modules including the factory abs.
I know I'm a bit late, but I'm glad his videos helps me to cope to the retirement of Mattpat. And his BMW M3 is quite good even though it still unfinished.
