Fun fact: In the original game you could not actually see which gun the marine was holding. He was simply holding some kind of rifle the entire time no matter what gun you had selected. What you are seeing here is simply a mod where someone added the sprites for each gun.

Thanks. I did not do all of them. It was the first four (fists, chainsaw, pistol, and shotgun) that I made. The shotgun marine was first. I made it in 1998 for the TC I was working on at the time, DeiM, where the roles were switched, and the player was a demon fighting against the space marines. In 2000 I spoke to one of the programmers of the DooM source port, DooM Legacy, about adding visual weapon support (VWEPs) to Legacy, which would have allowed players to see which weapons their opponents were carrying, instead of just the default DooM marine sprites. He seemed to be interested, so I created the chainsaw marine, the pistol marine, and the fists marine. Unfortunately, the DooM Legacy development team didn't show much interest in VWEP support after that, so I stopped working on the sprites for the other weapons. Anthony Cole created the chaingun marine in 2001. I do not know who created the sprites for the other three weapons. While the DooM Legacy team did not add VWEP support, I am told that another DooM source port, Skulltag, did add it, using the ssprites I made. It is my guess the views of the DooM marine in this video were taken in Skulltag.

It's funny, the ones by you (and the one by Anthony Cole) clearly had a lot of effort put in. The SSG, Plasma and Rocket sprites we see here were clearly just slapped onto the original Doomguy sprite with little effort. The care that went into the 4 you made as well as the chaingun sprite and BFG sprite really show, in my opinion.

It's actually very reminiscent of a boxer's jig. I found it to be quite pleasing. He actually looks like he's not only ready to punch something to death, but like he's thrilled by the thought.
Crucillus Thorn I get the idea, but it looks too random, like they animated both his arms seperately. It should look more like he's limbering up for a fight, not like he's on coke, and almost every game has done that animation better.
It's a first person game. It's really cool that his entire body is well animated like that considering that we're not even supposed to see the animation.

I like how with the minigun, you can see the effects of video games cutting a few corners when it comes to weapons. In the original, Slayer actually has the ammo belt in his hand- wrapped around his arm for better feeding, I think- and in 2016 the gun just has the common drum mag that’s found on a lot of miniguns in games today.

My second question wasn't really criticism, as this applies to many games, not just doom. It didn't bother me in Serious Sam, and it didn't bother me in Doom either. It's just funny. The pistol holding was obviously an omission though.

It's really cool how despite there being no way to really see the doomslayer's character model outside of free camera mode they felt the need to put a little bit of unique detail into the weapon specific idle animations for each one. I'm especially suprised to see him carry the chaingun less like serious sam and more like how an actual person would considering how he can heft around the BFG 9000 at around chest level no problem

Dunno if it's brutal doom or something you used to make doomguy look like that, but originally in third person doomguy only had a rifle in his hand no matter what weapon he was carrying. (TRIVIA: Although the assault rifle was removed after the alpha versions of Doom and was replaced with the pistol instead, the rifle was still on the player sprite in the full release and stuck in Doom II as well.)

It's a Metallica "No Remorse" midi though, so it makes it great. The actual song (non-midi) is way better than Doom2016's Djent, in my opinion. But, the djent soundtrack is still pretty good. The original Doom sampled Metallica, Slayer, and Pantera. If they weren't midis, it would've been legendary.
GhostyTheHunter it isn't any specific song, it was a common riff. There's about 6 other songs with the same sound. It's even in "Beyond the Crooked Cross", which is where the E3M3 music is from as well.

Most people seem all surprised the newer one can't seem to stand still. I'd say two things on this subject, first he's been stuck immobile for centuries which makes some sense then. Need to limber up if you're going to fight demons hand to hand. Second, speed is his biggest defensive weapon. Armor, health? That's nothing compared to just not getting hit with the glow balls of flesh and metal melting plasma.
The fact that the character models even in first person viewed in a 3rd person perspective is still there is actually Amazing unlike other games that characters don't even have heads.

I like how with the minigun, you can see the effects of video games cutting a few corners when it comes to weapons. In the original, Slayer actually has the ammo belt in his hand- wrapped around his arm for better feeding, I think- and in 2016 the gun just has the common drum mag that’s found on a lot of miniguns in games today.

My second question wasn't really criticism, as this applies to many games, not just doom. It didn't bother me in Serious Sam, and it didn't bother me in Doom either. It's just funny. The pistol holding was obviously an omission though.

It's really cool how despite there being no way to really see the doomslayer's character model outside of free camera mode they felt the need to put a little bit of unique detail into the weapon specific idle animations for each one. I'm especially suprised to see him carry the chaingun less like serious sam and more like how an actual person would considering how he can heft around the BFG 9000 at around chest level no problem

Dunno if it's brutal doom or something you used to make doomguy look like that, but originally in third person doomguy only had a rifle in his hand no matter what weapon he was carrying.
(TRIVIA: Although the assault rifle was removed after the alpha versions of Doom and was replaced with the pistol instead, the rifle was still on the player sprite in the full release and stuck in Doom II as well.)

It's a Metallica "No Remorse" midi though, so it makes it great. The actual song (non-midi) is way better than Doom2016's Djent, in my opinion. But, the djent soundtrack is still pretty good. The original Doom sampled Metallica, Slayer, and Pantera. If they weren't midis, it would've been legendary.

Most people seem all surprised the newer one can't seem to stand still. I'd say two things on this subject, first he's been stuck immobile for centuries which makes some sense then. Need to limber up if you're going to fight demons hand to hand.
Second, speed is his biggest defensive weapon. Armor, health? That's nothing compared to just not getting hit with the glow balls of flesh and metal melting plasma.
The fact that the character models even in first person viewed in a 3rd person perspective is still there is actually Amazing unlike other games that characters don't even have heads.
