Chaka Khan “My Funny Valentine” Montreux Jazz Festival

- To tell the truth I don’t recall the year or if I’m correct in the Festival in which she sang this; what I do know is that she sang the hell out of it!! One thing I love about Chaka is that she never sings a song the same way. Each time you hear her live it’s a new experience. Just incredible!! Compare this version to my previously posted “My Funny Valentine” at the Apollo Theater by Chaka; both versions are incredible; but totally different. I loves me some Chaka!!
Be on the look out for Season 1 Episode 1 of SIX DEGREES OF... Chaka Khan when we will highlight Chaka’s influences!!!
Just beautiful. You can tell she is a jazz artist at heart.
Talent is something you work hard at until you hone your craft -- and this is to be applauded. But being gifted requires no effort; it's just something you're born with...it flows easy; naturally. Chaka's voice is definitely a gift from God. Try hard as you may but you can neither teach nor learn the unique nuances and variances implanted in Chaka's voice. With each note, she exquisitely and flawlessly sings this Rogers and Hart classic as if they had written and composed it just for her. And although this great composition have stood the test of time and have been sung by countless artists, I feel that Chaka's rendition fused so perfectly with the music/lyrics that this piece was catapulted to a musical work of art.
Agree❤️👍👍👍
💯👌🏾
pure magic man....wow
A Quintessential Jazz Singer!!!! A great band of jazz musicians behind her too!!!
My Queen!!!
Sure Sweet thing, she sang this song organically with EASE as if it were written especially for her, so tender, precious, and POWERFUL 💗
When you learn the meanings of the words , the song never gets old!
How utterly beautiful is this?
Chaka, you've gotta come back to NJPAC here in Newark, NJ! Please!
Wow....💋
I first heard the song sung by Chaka Khan when I bought the 1995 record ,,Waiting to Exhale ,, by Babyface . With this song Chaka Khan proves once again what a wonderful and very good singer she is. Greetings from Heidelberg / Germany
Thank you for your comment!!! Greetings!!!!
I'd heard her sing this and was a amazed at her presentation. A gifted songstress.
This one of my favorite.🥰🥰🥰
This I enjoyed. Thank you for this content. A shoutout to Chaka Khan. Beautiful 😊
A Hauntingly Beautiful.... Classic Song✨✨
Ms.Chaka ....What a Gift she has....accompanied by excellent musicians✨✨✨✨
Also loved the late great Sarah" Sassy" Vaughn's ,version as well....( May she Rest in Glory)🙏🏿🕊️
Brillant!!!
90s Chaka, my most favorite period of her vocals performed live. Imo, her instrument was at its peak, the flexibility, clarity, power, sultriness, and range executed so effortlessly.
I totally agree with you. I went to countless Chaka performances and nothing compares to her 1990's shows!! She was on point every time throughout that decade!!
@@BAASEntertainment You too! One year I attended at least 5 live shows in one year during the 90s when I was living in NY...😄
@@Mike-gc9fb I’m sure we ran into one another. I was living in New York at the time also. I used to have a website called “Chaka’s House”; we started the campaign to get Chaka a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So I was at all the Chaka shows.
@@BAASEntertainment Absolutely! More than likely at one of her stints at the Blue Note, Tramps, or the Pier. Ah, yes, I remember the campaign with the late Ms Dee and her daughter, right?
@@Mike-gc9fb Yep, Dee, Bryce and I (Troy) started the campaign. When Dee passed, her daughter Renee, stepped in for her.
Absolute magic! Just exquisite. Thanks so very much for sharing this!🌞
Great performance of this cut … just when I thought iv seen her best on this cut . then comes another that tops the other!! Master Vocalist 🎉Chaka spans and drops skill range and emotion into all across the board of the American song book.
I just love her to pieces! God bless her always!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Exitantemente bellaaaaaa!!👏💋
👶💌👄💓💯.....!!
black foxy, what a voice and omg what a women, you can fall in love with her voice alone, I remember the med 70s, I had her tapes, the old 8 tracks, Barry white, the Isley brothers, the commodores, the Ojays, oh ya, the good old 8 track days, earth wind and fire, met women at the clubs and they loved my van, listening to my music, it worked every time, the good old days

Yes, there is no one like Chaka!! Thank you for sharing your memories! I think the 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s produced the best music.
I had her 8 tracks too. Have seen her 4 or 5 times live, most recently a few years ago. I live Chaka
Love your comment!😊🎹❤
I ❤Chaka K all every Day !!
This was her best live concert. Hope you can upload the entire show.
Yes, Chaka was on fire during this performance!! I wish I had the whole show. If I find it, I will definitely put it up.
@@BAASEntertainment I've actually seen this concert here on YT several years ago. I know I saved it in my fav Chaka live performances playlist but its no longer there. Btw, it was a really good show. Her sister Taka Boom and Penny Ford provided bgvs. The songlist at this particular show was the same on another Montreux gig she did around or near the same time that was recently posted to YT about a month or 2 ago.
I have this on tape
She did an amazing version of Fever and At Midnight . It used to be on RUclips.
@@BAASEntertainment This must have been around the time she ended up releasing her "Epiphany" best of compilation right after "Dare You To Love Me" album was shelved. She was absolutely powerful around this time...
Classic Funny Valentine
the QWEEN
Given that the audio is good, why is the video so poor?
Without exception, the very best cover of 'My Funny Valentine' I have ever heard was that from Alice Fredenham ruclips.net/video/MKS4NyqF6Ik/видео.html
Alice did not have Chaka's experience and vocal range. But for expressing the emotion of this song, and doing so using just one instrument, Alice's cover has no rival. Alice also sang an abbreviated version for an audition on Britain's got talent (86 million views) ruclips.net/video/IChJ6eO3k48/видео.html
Sadly, Alice likely suffered from stage fright and stopped singing after releasing her debut album in early 2017.
i'm happy you heard a version that pleases you so, truly i am... but, that girl couldn't carry Chaka's jock strap... 🤣
@@o.b.v.i.u.s Jock strap?? You select a most unusual allusion.
@@gregparrott / Everyone is entitled to their own opinion....with that said, this young lady is talented!!( I saw/ heard her performance)
However....In my most humble opinion ,There is no comparison,Ms.Sarah( "Sassy" Vaughn one of the "Jazz Greats" and Ms Chaka Khan, knock this Classic song....out of the ...Ball Park.....
Period.
@@lindalyte7307 I'll agree with Sarah Vaughn. And both are certainly more accomplished than Alice. I liked Chaka Khan's music and purchased one of her albums, probably 20 years ago now. No disrespect for her. I have listened to ~20 covers of this, going back to the original, something like ~70 years ago. In my opinion, Alice's cover is tops. And, for singing "At Last", no one will top Etta James.
@@gregparrott
Alice version isn't even in the same conversation when it comes to singing this song. Chaka's soulfulness excludes Alice's cover not to mention Chaka's vocal acrobatics. Chaka has too many vocal weapons with incredible range and power. Don't ever compare this Alice to a vocal GIANT!
❤
The pianist is overplaying
He needs to back it up a bit and let her showcase the song!
Jetzt weiß ich warum das Klavier als Klimperkasten bezeichnet wird
❤❤what yr.?
there is a good deal of static in your sound quality.
chet baker is best..
Hahaha...you wish! Chet can't touch the hem of her dress
The pianist was doing way to much in this rendition OMG
What do you mean exactly...the intro ?
terrible. so overdone.
Agreed.
I don't like vocal acrobatics and perhaps the emotional element wasn't there, and yes she probably used the song to showcase her voice, but there were some blinding bits in it don't you think
Lies and why are u here 😂
@@jacquelinepaul9731
You just jealous and it's okay, you just wish your favorite singer could replicate what Chaka does. Get over it!
@@ronaldw548
I stand by my observation of the facts.
Awesome
God's gift to the world is in the voice of this soulful queen. She's just as beautiful as she could be. I love Chaka Khan. ❤❤❤
