- If ever there was a song that deserved the title "saloon song", it's this 1950 masterpiece of lyrics and melody by Edward C. Redding. The song has been covered by great singers like Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Nat "King" Cole. All of their versions are treasures and I recommend them to anyone interested in hearing examples of great singers singing great songs. In my humble opinion, here Chaka Khan produces what I believe is the definitive version. The lyrics and the music and her voice are a perfect marriage. This clip is from her 2000 performance at BET Jazz Channel.

When she released it on the CK album I, too, said (IMHO) this is THE definitive version! The gods intended for it to be sung by Chaka, as with so many other classic pieces. Thaddeus, nice treatment by Chaka of this song. She is a very talented singer. However, to say that this is the "definitive version" is indeed a stretch!
@@enjoy7024I don't think it's a stretch whatsoever. Her cover version of "My Funny Valentine" is also probably the definitive version although more R&B oriented. From all the cover versions that exist hers is the most accurate regarding the melody and what is supposed to be taken out of the song.

This is a live version...you should listen to Chaka's original 1988 "CK" album version or her "Epiphany - The Best Of" album version...
Nora Johnson, you cant compare Julie London to Chaka Khan, Chaka Version sound much better than Julie London, Billy Holiday and all the other I have seen trying to sang this song, Chaka did an amazing at singing this song.
London's version is the sterile and monotone version
This woman can sing any song. She is never trying to do a song better. She is doing it in her own style. She doesn't compete that's why she is such a good singer.

I am really shocked to this disappointing version of a song wich I really love (for decades!) in it's studio version
( ruclips.net/video/WaIMQGDrbdE/видео.html ). But here: every second note is far away from acceptable pitch (and it wasn't the band's fault)... Also her insufficient attempt to get George Bensons solo - neither in terms of groove nor in expression -
just a caricature of a great solo.
Chaka Kahn is really a great singer - but here it sounds like one of these unbearable recordings f.ex. of Charlie Parker, when he was too drunk to play (-> lover man etc.).
Chaka - I am so inconsolable, but because of this performance you lost a piece of untouchability as one of the greatest singers of the last decades. Now I can not bann from my ears what I've heard here. It is like memorizing a car accident which you saw involuntarily... Dismantling of an icon. Not more or less.

I was so caught off guard by your comment that I had to play this clip over again to see if I could hear any of the things that you complain about here. Upon further review, I find NOTHING of what you're talking about in this performance. I know that music criticism is purely subjective. But things like inappropriate pitch isn't a subjective matter. Either the pitch is correct, or it isn't. I heard nothing here that warranted your response.

Wow! I just played and listened to "YOUR" version of the exact same song and I was blown away by your approach as far as the technicalities. I mean you nailed the song and I'm sure that "Lady Day" herself would be beaming with happiness at your attempt.
Okay now that I've gotten that bullchit out the way, ROFKMSL! From the way you attacked Chaka Khan's performance you'd have to be Pavarotti himself in reincarnation. How much money did you make or alcolades did you receive when you placed your recorded version of this song on your ALBUM/CD/MP3? I imagine not a got-damned penny since no one has ever heard of you. I'm more than sure that Ms. Khan sounds better than you after she has awaken in the middle of the night to take a well deserved chit. It is always you people that spent 20 minutes in a music appreciation class where you've barely learn the correct musical term for sheet music!
If you watched any live performance and didn't like how the artist interpreted the lyrics to any song just refrain from viewing it and move on with your life. But don't sit anywhere and attempt to rip them to shreds on social media as if you can or could do any better. On another and final note; I am positively sure that Chaka Khan wouldn't give-a-chit about what an absolute arrogant no body has to say about her years of outstanding work!!!!
