Respect to Phillip Norris. The ease with which he's slipped into Emmet's groove is a testament to his musicianship.

Sounds like they are playing the song for the sake of the changes with no respect for the song. If you want to play an uptempo song then play Cherokee. Maybe they should listen to Nancy or Roy more often.

You can play a song however you feel it right. You'd be surprised how many ballads i've started to like by playing an uptempo version of it (specially live)

When you play a ballad you should memorize the words. If you don’t memorize the words your only playing half the song. The End Of A Love Affair has beautifully sad words that are heartbreaking if you want to play it fast that’s fine but the words don’t make sense when played fast.I will never forget one night near Boston in Cambridge , a long time ago Chet Baker was playing at the Rise Club on Mass. Ave. Alan Dawson was the drummer, they were playing a ballad and the rhythm section went into double time and Chet got up from the bandstand and walked away.Chet didn’t come back until the song was over.He told the audience that when he calls a fucken ballad he wants to play a ballad if he wanted an uptempo tune he would have called for one. This situation they started uptempo so it’s a little different. The song was done beautifully and these are the best musicians alive today but to me and this is only my opinion it was only a half of a song because at this joyous tempo the words of the song don’t make sense.

No respect for the song? This is nothing but respect for the song. There’s even a lyric that states “… I go at a maddening pace.”
So many cats play the tune uptempo it seems to be de rigueur.
Maybe you should listen to Dex, Wes, Jazz Messengers with Horace Silver, Kenny Dorham or Doug Raney all of whom play the tune at a spritely gallop.

Not up tempo at all, very medium (maybe slighly medium up) and there are some wonderful classic recordings of this tune at a similar pace--Dexter Gordon's version on Dexter Calling (which was even faster) and also Art Blakey w/Hank Mobley and Donald Byrd comes to mind. These cats sounded wonderful--and I can guarantee Jeremy Pelt has the upmost respect for the song!!!!!!!!
