    We just went to DC for the first time last fall and it was amazing. We didn’t get to do everything on this list but we did the majority of them! Seeing the monuments at night, Ford’s Theatre, and the African-American History + Culture Museum were my favorites!

    Next time you go to DC spend time in The Library of Congress. It's more than books! They have many different programs and live performances. They have the largest collection of ancient maps in the world. They have a huge collection of films and music. Once inside, you'll find you're in the most beautiful interior you've ever seen -- even more so in the reading room. The building is a marvel. Have lunch in the Madison Building cafeteria (it's the best in the city) and check out the elevated view of the city and Mall.

    This has been a fantastic video to watch. I will be visiting the U.S for the first time in November and will be starting my trip in Washington D.C before going to Pennsylvania and then on to NYC. This video has given me ideas on how to tackle D.C. Thank you.

    Great video! 👍 We are planning on going to Washington D.C. and Gettysburg in a couple of years. Our boys will be 11 and 10 years old. We are going to Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons this September (I purchased your itineraries last night). How many days would you recommend for D.C. and how many days for Gettysburg to be able to soak most of it in? Also, what time of the year would you recommend? We homeschool our boys so it doesn't necessarily have to be in the summer. But, we are however, traveling with our RV. I look forward to your response. You both keep up the good work! Love, love, love your videos!

      Thanks so much! I am leading an actual tour for Washington DC this October. I think four days is a great amount of time to see the city and do a few side trips. Gettysburg is a one-day side trip from DC. Spring time cherry blossoms is a popular time to visit. Summer is boiling hot and you'll do a lot of walking. I'm leading my tour in October because I think the weather is great and it's not as crowded. I once visited in December and believe it or not, it was amazing because there were no crowds!

    It felt like you were at a funeral when you stepped into the actual theatre area at Fords Theatre. So somber 😔 the Lincoln’s Waffle Shop across the street was good!

    Contraband and Freedman's Cemetery, Pentagon 9/11 Memorial - Two powerful places that most don't know about or go to. We were the only ones at both when we visited last summer. Or, try the Signers of the Declaration of Independence memorial. We were only joined by two other people because they were curious about what we were looking at.

    My 9 yr old son really wants to go to DC so I’m thinking taking him for his birthday week in mid august. How’s the weather there in august? I’m dreading walking everywhere in the heat.

    How many days you recommend for my first visit to W.D.C.?

    • @WereintheRockies
      @WereintheRockies  7 месяцев назад

      It really depends on how thoroughly you want to see everything, but I'd recommend at least 4 days. That's the amount of time we allotted for a tour group we lead last year.

      BEWARE! Washington is a WALKING city, you can walk yourself to death! Learn the metro and bus system to get around for a reasonable rate. Do not try to be cute, wear good WALKING shoes!!! If money is no object, take a "get on, get off" tour. Save as many steps as possible, everything you get to see will be worth the muscle soreness but fit in plenty of rest and ice cream!

    Rule 8: the elevators don't work, the escalators don't work and your station is closed on the Metro.

      LOL! Whatcha talking about Willis!
      What Metro does when *escalators/elevators at a station aren't working, is for passengers to ride subway to the nearest metro station with in-service escalators/elevators that work, where Metro will have free shuttle buses to the surface area of the metro station with non-working escalators/elevators.
      NOTE: Shuttle buses are wheelchair accessible.
      *Also, metro (throughout the whole system) has audio and passenger information display screens (PIDS) so folks can be informed and or to plan accordingly.
